Abstract:
Thermal induced errors are significant factors that affect machine tool accuracy. The deformation of spindle is the main contributor to thermal error. In this paper, the thermal characteristics of the spindle system are investigated. Taking into account the coupling of elastic deformation and temperature, the heat conduction of the spindle system is modeled. The heat of bearings and heat transfer coefficient, and boundary conditions of the spindle are determined. Based on the numerical results, an iterative model of spindle's temperature and thermal deformation are acquired under the actions of thermal loads using the finite element method. Taking the spindle of precision boring machine with some reasonable assumptions and simplicities as an example, the finite element analysis model of spindle thermal characteristics is analyzed with virtual prototyping, and the static/transient temperature field and thermal-structure field are calculated using ABAQUS software. The characteristics of heat flow and thermal deformation within the spindle are analyzed according to the simulation results. The research results provide a theoretical foundation for reasonable arrangement and optimal design to reduce radial and axial deformation of the spindle head, temperature controlling, and the error compensation to the precision machining tool.

Abstract:
This paper describes on the influence of thermal behavior of spindle on machining accuracy in micro-endmilling. In order to make clear the reasons why the depth of slot varies during slotting repeated, temperatures around the spindle head and the thermal expansion of spindle axis were investigated. The machine tool used for experiment was a small type of vertical machining center. The spindle used for experiment was a ball bearing spindle which rotated at 10000-40000 min-1. The spindle head made of aluminum alloy had various cooling systems for spindle motor and ball bearings, and the temperature of spindle head changed only a few degrees C. Therefore it seems difficult to assume that the primary cause was thermal deformation of spindle head structure, even though the coefficient of thermal expansion of aluminum alloy is approximately twice of that of steel. Finally the thermal expansion of spindle axis was partly measured and relation between the thermal expansion and the variation of depth of slots was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows, (1) Slotting after a long period warming-up of spindle resulted in a small change of depth of slot, but slotting without any warming-up caused an initial rapid increase and then saturation of depth of slot, (2) Temperature rise of spindle head and adjacent structure seemed out of relation to the variation of depth of slot, (3) The partially measured thermal expansion of spindle as well as temperature of lower flange of spindle showed qualitatively similar change corresponding to depth of slot.

Abstract:
The spindle shaft of heavy load deflection angle milling head is an important functional component of 5-axis CNC machine tool, which has characteristics of high torque and high power, used for large and complex free-form surface processing. The spindle shaft is modeled as Timoshenko’s beam by including the centrifugal force and gyroscopic effects. The effects on inherent characteristic of the spindle shaft of heavy load deflection angle milling head are analyzed owing to axial force and spindle shaft speed. Simultaneously, numerical solution of spindle shaft is gotten. And, the numerical results are well agree with the exact modeling, which illustrates that the theoretical modeling of spindle shaft is correct and the exact dynamic characteristics of spindle shaft is obtained. The analytical modeling results of spindle shaft are effective and helpful for design and improvement of spindle shaft of heavy load deflection angle milling head.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the problem of optimal configuration of a type of transfer lines which are equipped with transfer machines. Such machines perform operations with standard modular spindle heads which are activated sequentially. All operations assigned to the same spindle head (block of operations) are executed simultaneously by a set of tools fixed at the spindle head. The quantity of machines and spindle heads used to produce a part with the given productivity rate defines the final cost of the transfer line which must be minimized. To minimize this cost, a combinatorial problem of operations assignment to blocks and machines must be solved. The solution must provide a desired productivity (cycle time), it must also satisfy precedence and compatibility constraints. In this paper, we suggest improved versions of FSIC heuristic algorithm in order to help line designers to solve real-scale industrial problems. Results of computational experiments obtained for industrial cases are presented.

Abstract A systematic methodology for automatic gang spindle head design through parallelism-based operation clustering is an important component in Reconfigurable Machining System (RmS)1 design. Such parallelism-based operation clusters as we refer to them, must satisfy a set of constraints in order to be processed simultaneously on a gang spindle head. A group of operations should be decomposed if any constraint is violated. In doing this, the identification of clusters with identical patterns can potentially lead to savings in machine design and reconfiguration costs. To identify these patterns manually is time consuming and prone to error. This paper presents a pattern identification algorithm that will recognize identical pattern clusters by first searching for translational vectors (or rotational vectors) and then extracting the appropriate sets of end-points. The algorithm automatically obtains all alternative solutions so that finding identical patterns on different faces of the part or on different parts within a part family can be implemented. This strategy maximizes the usage of identical spindles and/or machines. The cost associated with redesigning, testing, and reconfiguration is significantly reduced. Such a tool can be used by the system designer for gang spindle head design in the RmS domain.

Abstract:
Abstract The key task for the spindle motor in a hard disk drive is to provide stable, reliable and consistent turning power for many years to allow the hard drive to function properly. As hard disks become more advanced, virtually every component in them is required to do more & perform better, and the spindle motor is no exception. Increasing the rotational speed at which the platters spin means that the data can be read off the disk faster, and also reduces rotational latency, the time that the heads must wait for the correct sector number to come under the head. For this reason, there has been a push to increase the speed of the spindle motor. Since the launching of hydro-dynamic bearing spindle technology for high speed application will not be in due course, current ball bearing technology will still be around for a couple of years provided the spindle speed does not exceed around 15 Krpm. Therefore optimizing the steel balls in the spindle system is an alternative to deal with the ever-increasing performance requirements of the hard disk drive. To accomplish this, we have to understand the failure phenomenon in the spindle, thereby set test requirements to overcome the failure mechanism. These test requirements will help us to understand the performance characteristic and robustness of the spindle motor. In this paper, the test requirements is set according to modal, load and vibration methods to quantify the hard disk drive ball bearing spindle motor.

Abstract:
The drilling of deep holes with small diameters remains an unsatisfactory technology, since its productivity is rather limited. The main limit to an increase in productivity is directly related to the poor chip evacuation, which induces frequent tool breakage and poor surface quality. Retreat cycles and lubrication are common industrial solutions, but they induce productivity and environmental drawbacks. An alternative response to the chip evacuation problem is the use of a vibratory drilling head, which enables the chips to be fragmented thanks to the axial self-excited vibration. Contrary to conventional machining processes, axial drilling instability is sought, thanks to an adjustment of head design parameters and appropriate conditions of use. In this paper, self-vibratory cutting conditions are established through a specific stability lobes diagram. A dynamic high-speed spindle / drilling head / tool system model is elaborated on the basis of rotor dynamics predictions. The model-based tool tip FRF is integrated into an analytical stability approach. The torsional-axial coupling of the twist drill is investigated and consequences on drilling instability are established. Specific stability lobes are established and indicate modifications of self-excited operating zones. This approach allows refining the stability prediction of the global system during a drilling operation.

Abstract:
In this paper, two different simulataneous five-axis control motions were newly proposed to identify the ten inherent deviations in universal spindle head type multi-axis machines. The ball bar was used as a measuring device. Both of the two motions were carried out bu using a single setup which was a simple extension bar. This leads to reduce non-productive time of the operator within the machine work space. Three measurments were used to estimate the ten deviations in which two measurements were extracted by means of axial direction motion and the other by tangential direction motion. By using the axial direction motion, seven deviations were estiamted in which four deviations were estiamted by means of the observation equation and simple geometric relations were used for other three. Remaining three of the ten deviations was estimated by using tangential direction motion. The validity of the proposed methodology for identifying the ten deviations inherent to universal spindle head type five-axis machining centers is confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:
The contact potential across the head-disk interface is investigated. AC voltage was applied to the disk surface using a mercury connector located at the top of the spindle, keeping the recording head grounded. The acoustic emission (AE) and touchdown sensor (TDS) amplitude was measured as a function of the DC offset voltage to determine the contact potential across the head-disk interface at which the AE and TDS signals, respectively, becomes a minimum. The contact potential across the head-disk interface is studied as a function of temperature, relative humidity, and wear of the head-disk interface.

Abstract:
In this paper, a novel radial loading topology is proposed for various spindle test application where the space in the tool head is limited or the performance to the length is sensitive. The stator of the loading device grows in the lateral direction, allowing for a compact axial length design. Finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out and the device design is optimized for the specifications of a radial loading device for high speed spindle. Finally, the designed device were manufactured and tested. By using this magnet loader, measurement results are given and the effectiveness of the designed prototype has been verified.

Abstract:
Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness and comparative effectiveness of opioid, nonopioid pharmacologic, and nonpharmacologic therapy in patients with specific types of acute pain, including effects on pain, function, quality of life, adverse events, and long-term use of opioids. Data sources. Electronic databases (Ovid® MEDLINE®, PsycINFO®, Embase®, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) to August 2020, reference lists, and a Federal Register notice. Review methods. Using predefined criteria and dual review, we selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of outpatient therapies for eight acute pain conditions: low back pain, neck pain, other musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, postoperative pain following discharge, dental pain (surgical or nonsurgical), pain due to kidney stones, and pain due to sickle cell disease. Meta-analyses were conducted on pharmacologic therapy for dental pain and kidney stone pain, and likelihood of repeat or rescue medication use and adverse events. The magnitude of effects was classified as small, moderate, or large using previously defined criteria, and strength of evidence was assessed. Results. One hundred eighty-three RCTs on the comparative effectiveness of therapies for acute pain were included. Opioid therapy was probably less effective than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for surgical dental pain and kidney stones, and might be similarly effective as NSAIDs for low back pain. Opioids and NSAIDs were more effective than acetaminophen for surgical dental pain, but opioids were less effective than acetaminophen for kidney stone pain. For postoperative pain, opioids were associated with increased likelihood of repeat or rescue analgesic use, but effects on pain intensity were inconsistent. Being prescribed an opioid for acute low back pain or postoperative pain was associated with increased likelihood of use of opioids at long-term followup versus not being prescribed, based on observational studies. Heat therapy was probably effective for acute low back pain, spinal manipulation might be effective for acute back pain with radiculopathy, acupressure might be effective for acute musculoskeletal pain, an opioid might be effective for acute neuropathic pain, massage might be effective for some types of postoperative pain, and a cervical collar or exercise might be effective for acute neck pain with radiculopathy. Most studies had methodological limitations. Effect sizes were primarily small to moderate for pain, the most commonly evaluated outcome. Opioids were associated with increased risk of short-term adverse events versus NSAIDs or acetaminophen, including any adverse event, nausea, dizziness, and somnolence. Serious adverse events were uncommon for all interventions, but studies were not designed to assess risk of overdose, opioid use disorder, or long-term harms. Evidence on how benefits or harms varied in subgroups was lacking. Conclusions. Opioid therapy was associated with decreased or similar effectiveness as an NSAID for some acute pain conditions, but with increased risk of short-term adverse events. Evidence on nonpharmacological therapies was limited, but heat therapy, spinal manipulation, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, a cervical collar, and exercise were effective for specific acute pain conditions. Research is needed to determine the comparative effectiveness of therapies for sickle cell pain, acute neuropathic pain, neck pain, and management of postoperative pain following discharge; effects of therapies for acute pain on non-pain outcomes; effects of therapies on long-term outcomes, including long-term opioid use; and how benefits and harms of therapies vary in subgroups.
