Abstract:
Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen: Otto Sperling the younger’s Latin biography of Leonora Christina (ca. 1690) Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen: The Danish antiquarian Otto Sperling the younger (1634‑1715) worked for most of his life on a manuscript titled ‘De foeminis doctis’, now in the collection of the Royal Library, shelfmark GKS 2110 quarto, which containedshort biographies of a total of 1,399 learned women from all ages and nations (cf. Fund og Forskning, 2012, pp. 187‑212). One of these is Leonora Christina (1621‑1698), the daughter of Christian IV and his morganatic wife, Kirsten Munk, and a major figure in Danish literature thanks to her prison narrative Jammers Minde and her so-called ‘French Autobiography’. Sperling’s Latin biography focuses on her literary achievements and contains information not found elsewhere. It has been known to scholarship for generations, and a partial translation from the eighteenth century exists in manuscript, but the text has never been published, probably because it consists of 24 pieces distributed over 18 different pages between pp. 306 and 401 of vol. I of the manuscript. It is here edited and translated into Danish for the first time, and it is argued that Sperling composed it on the basis of a series of interviews with the ageing Leonora Christina after her release from prison in 1685. In other words, Sperling functioned as Leonora Christina’s ghostwriter, and the text should really be considered autobiographical and placed alongside the Jammers Minde and her French Autobiography as an authentic expression of her personality.

Abstract:
Sperling's partial/whole-report methodology (Sperling, 1960) was employed with dimensions from integral and separable stimuli as selection cues. The redundancy of the stimulus combinations presented was varied in correlated, control, and orthogonal conditions, and selective readout performance was measured. In this way, the effects of the noncued dimension on selective readout of the cued dimension could be characterized for integral and separable stimuli. Results support and extend the findings recently presented by Burns and indicate that stimulus structure (e.g., integral, separable) is an important factor in determining the feature integration or feature segregation of dimensional combinations in selective readout from iconic memory.

Abstract:
Using a heuristic linear creep model, this study derives the governing differential equations of motion for the railway vehicle traveling on curved tracks. The railway vehicle is modeled as a car system with 27 degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), taking into account the lateral and vertical displacements, roll and yaw angles of the wheelsets and truck frames, as well as the lateral displacement, roll and yaw angles of the car body. The effects of railway vehicle speeds on the derailment quotients and offload factors related to running safety are evaluated by both the linear and nonlinear creep models for various radii of curved tracks. Using the Sperling and modified Sperling index formulas, the effects of railway vehicle speeds on lateral riding quality and comfort are illustrated for the two models with various radii of curved tracks. Furthermore, the effects of railway vehicle speeds on the lateral Sperling comfort index of the 27-DOF car model are presented and compared for various suspension parameters. Finally, the acceptable region for riding quality and comfort are drawn.

Abstract:
Ride comfort is a reference point in evaluating the dynamic performance in railway vehicles. There are more methods to assess the ride comfort, depending on the traffic details and the specific needs of a railway administration. This paper focuses on the comfort index methods, in accordance with UIC Leaflet 513 R and the standard of railway applications ENV 12299, and the ride Sperling’s method, formulated by Sperling. A correlation is drawn between the comfort indices corresponding to the two methods, based on the link between the comfort and the values of these indices. The comfort indices derived from the two methods by numerical simulations help with validating the fact that, in general, the velocity influences the vertical ride comfort, and, in particular, the position of the carbody critical points, from the perspective of the ride comfort.

Abstract:
The fire robot always bear high impact load due to the abominable fire environment and fatigue stress, this affects a lot on operation reliability and causes serious consequence. The operation quality of fire robot has been discussed in this paper, however, the kinetic energy and acceleration of vibration which have great influence on life cycle were analyzed, and Sperling Value, which definite by the acceleration and frequency, has been found for judging healthy condition of the robot. Furthermore, a set of method for measuring the vibration of robot has been proposed. The signal treated by Fourier Transform (FFT) and Sperling Value was calculated by a new algorithm. Experiments are made and the results demonstrated the practicability of the algorithm.

Abstract:
Abstract. German and Chinese students took part in four experiments. In Experiment 1, which was based on the Sperling paradigm, the participants were asked to report as many digits as possible from a briefly presented matrix. In contrast to previous experiments which had made use of Latin letters, the Chinese clearly outperformed the Germans this time. In Experiment 2, memory span for digits and Latin letters was measured. With Latin letters, the Germans achieved higher scores than the Chinese. The opposite was true for digit memory span. Taken together, the results indicate that performance in the Sperling task is not solely determined by encoding efficiency but also by rehearsal speed. In Experiment 3, the participants had to recognize only one item from briefly exposed stimulus displays. Besides Latin letters, language-specific stimuli were used consisting of combinations of letters for Germans and components of Chinese characters for Chinese. Based on the data from Experiment 3, two language-specific item sets comperable in terms of task difficulty, were chosen for use in the Sperling task in Experiment 4. Under these conditions, there was no significant difference in the overall level of performance between the two language groups. Performance was influenced, however, by the position of the items to be reported and this in a slightly different way in each language group. We discuss to what extent reading habits influenced the allocation of attention and adaptive processes caused differences in item recognition.

Abstract:
In the introduction, Valerie Sperling notes that "Russia's transition from communism toward capitalism and a more democratic political arrangement has been both good and bad for women, presenting both obstacles and opportunities for organizing" (p. 7). She goes on to produce an engaging and thought-provoking analysis aimed at broadening the scope and explanatory power of social movement theory, which, she argues, has been developed by scholars who focus primarily on social movements in the "contemporary core democracies" (pp. 52-3). In contrast Sperling develops "a cross-cultural model of social movement organizing and development that explores five interrelated opportunity structures: socio-cultural or attitudinal, political, economic, political-historical, and international" (p. 53). In each subse- quent chapter she tackles one of these opportunity structures and offers a number of fascinating insights into the world of post-Soviet social movements, based on the experience of her sample of women's organizations.

Abstract:
The body partially disrobed as a visual strategy for self-branding is the theme of this article. During Fascism, photography, in synergy with the communications industry ante-literam, was an essential part of the construction of the cult of the leader that transformed the figure of Mussolini into an icon. Mussolini’s partial nudity is considered here as a powerful political tool. The Duce, in anticipation of our celebrities today, did not hesitate to undress and display his torso in what Valerie Sperling calls ‘iconic public-relations stunts’ that were both exhibitionistic and voyeuristic (Sperling 2014, 21). Deconstructing the visual language of Fascist propaganda that made the man into a myth, this article illustrates the most iconic aspects of Mussolini’s visual strategy, demonstrating his innovative capacity to take advantage of a modern attitude towards self-representation, similar to that adopted by today’s heads of state.

Abstract:
This paper traces the steps taken by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways in the past to improve the metre gauge bogie design, which resulted in crossing the age-old speed barrier of 75 km/h, initially in 1977, when the Pink City Express was introduced at a maximum permissible speed of 100 km/h. The ‘Sperling ride index’ achieved at that time at the 110 km/h test speed was nearing 3.2 in the lateral mode and 3.33 in the vertical mode. Major design modifications are described that were carried out in the conventional metre gauge bogie/body, using indigenous technology, while designing high-tech metre gauge (MG) coaches. These are suitable for running on Indian Railways' track at a maximum permissible speed of 120 km/h and at the same time provide superior riding characteristics (with sperling ride index restricted to 2.75) comparable to those available on the main line coaches of 1000 mm gauge in the developed countries of the world.

AbstractOne can distinguish among perceptual states that have been accessed by working memory, states that are accessible, and states that are inaccessible. Block compellingly argues that phenomenology outstrips access but wrongly implies that phenomenology outstrips accessibility. There is a subjective difference between Sperling cases and inattentional blindness, which suggests that phenomenology occurs under conditions of accessibility, and not inaccessibility.
