Full textNuclear Quadrupolar Resonance (NQR) is a radio frequency spectroscopy technique that is very useful for non-invasive identification and analysis of chemical products. However, it suffers from low sensitivity which makes its instrumentation very challenging. In order to tackle these challenges and enhance the performances, especially sensitivity,we present in this thesis a solution which consists in a SoC-FPGA based compact spectrometer, where all the major digital hardware and software modules are integrated on a single System On Chip, including : a high pulse width resolution pulse programmer, a fully controllable transmitter, an acquisition module with real time digital signal processing, and storage of the acquired signal in an external memory, and a hardware debugger, in addition to embedded Linux applications that drive the spectrometer functionalities. This digital integration and miniaturisation brought noticeable performances of the spectrometers' overall functionality, especially in terms of sensitivity and portability. The designed spectrometer was successfully tested on several representative samples

Full textIn this work we present a home-made experimental device devoted to Nitrogen-14 Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance experiments. In a first chapter we recall the basics of NQR in the case of a spin 1 (as this is the case for Nitrogen-14). The second part is essentially a description of the spectrometer. This part also includes the first experimental results that we obtained. Chapter three is the theoretical framework of this thesis with derivation of equations that express the effect of a radiofrequency pulse. We focus on the nutation curve and we show that there exist different behaviors according to the symmetry of the electric field gradient tensor. Experiments confirm this theoretical finding. In the last part, we present simulation results obtained with a software developed at ISL (Institut de recherche de Saint-Louis), this thesis being achieved within a partnership between the NMR methodologies group and ISL

Full textAfter a review of the theory of NQR and of factors that relate to it, the various kinds of spectrometers used to study Nitrogen-14 and Bromine NQR at 4. 2 K are described. A delayed double resonance experiment in s-triazine, where the relaxation times are long, allowed the ѵ+ and ѵ- in this substance lines to be paired. It was also possible to observe emission signals at the ѵ- lines. Complete NQR spectra of Cyanuric chloride and melamine were obtained by the observation of two new lines and nine new lines, respectively, at 4. 2 K. A Bromine NQR study of ThBr₄ was carried out at 4. 2 K by the use of a half-wavelength transmission line connecting the r. F. Coil in the cryostat to the superregenerative spectrometer. Thus, we were able to observe at this temperature the incommensurate phase which was already known to exist at higher temperature
