Full text
Abstract:
The catalogue includes descriptions of 24 iris accessions belonging to seven species of the genus Iris L. from the VIR collection: species characteristics, main ornamental traits and inflorescence structure features, flowering schedule, and reproducibility. These accessions are the most adapted to the climate conditions of the Russian Northwest. Brief descriptions facilitate identification of varieties in the field. As a result of long-term research, accessions have been identified in the iris genepool to serve as sources of valuable agronomic traits, namely high ornamental value, winter hardiness, and resistance to fungal diseases. The catalogue is recommended to plant breeders, landscaping architects, and students majoring in agricultural disciplines.

Abstract:
Species acclimatization--the organized introduction of organisms to a new region--is much maligned in the present day. However, colonization depended on moving people, plants, and animals from place to place, and in centuries past, scientists, landowners, and philanthropists formed acclimatization societies to study local species and conditions, form networks of supporters, and exchange supposedly useful local and exotic organisms across the globe. Pete Minard tells the story of this movement, arguing that the colonies, not the imperial centers, led the movement for species acclimatization. Far from attempting to re-create London or Paris, settlers sought to combine plants and animals to correct earlier environmental damage and to populate forests, farms, and streams to make them healthier and more productive. By focusing particularly on the Australian colony of Victoria, Minard reveals a global network of would-be acclimatizers, from Britain and France to Russia and the United States. Although the movement was short-lived, the long reach of nineteenth-century acclimatization societies continues to be felt today, from choked waterways to the uncontrollable expansion of European pests in former colonies.

Abstract:
The catalogue includes descriptions of 41 daylily accessions belonging to five species of the genus Hemerocallis L. from the VIR collection: main ornamental traits and peculiarities of the inflorescence structure, flowering schedules, and reproduction abilities. These accessions are most adaptable to the climate of the Russian Northwest. Brief descriptions make it possible to identify cultivars under field conditions. As a result of long-term studies, sources of useful agronomic traits have been identified in the preserved genetic diversity, namely: high ornamental value, winter hardiness, and resistance to fungal diseases. The catalogue is recommended to plant breeders, landscaping experts, and students majoring in agricultural practices.

Beehag, Gary, Jyri Kaapro, and Andrew Manners. Pest Management of Turfgrass for Sport and Recreation. CSIRO Publishing, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486305759.

Full text
Abstract:
Vital for a game of cricket or golf and enjoyable when picnicking in the park, turfgrass provides a wide range of aesthetic and recreational benefits. However, managed turfgrass is prone to damaging outbreaks of insects and mites. Pest Management of Turfgrass for Sport and Recreation is the first comprehensive work on the plant-eating insects and mites of the grass and non-grass species currently maintained as ornamental lawns and turfgrass playing surfaces throughout Australia, the South Pacific and South-East Asia. This book provides an industry reference for the identification of pests affecting the roots, stems and leaves of turfgrass and control of these species through integrated pest management. It contains information on the distribution, ecology and biology of pests and how to monitor them. The integrated pest management approach outlined in the book includes natural environmental controls, beneficial and predatory species of arthropods, resistant cultivars and insecticidal and miticidal pesticides. Pest Management of Turfgrass for Sport and Recreation is an essential manual for managers of sportsgrounds, bowling greens, lawn tennis courts, golf courses, racecourses, ornamental landscapes, amenity parklands, public reserves and turfgrass production farms.

Abstract:
Plant Analysis: An Interpretation Manual 2nd Edition is an easily accessible compilation of data summarising the range of nutrient concentration limits for crops, pastures, vegetables, fruit trees, vines, ornamentals and forest species. This information is valuable in assessing the effectiveness of fertiliser programs and for monitoring longer term changes in crop nutritional status. New to this edition: Volume and scope of information accessed from the literature has expanded several-fold. Interpretation criteria for 294 species have been compiled in the tables from more than 1872 published papers. New chapter on nutrient criteria for forest species. Includes guidelines for collecting, handling and analysing plant material. An entire chapter is devoted to the identification of nutrient deficiency and toxicity symptoms.

Lewis, WJ, and DMcE Alexander. Grafting and Budding. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643096240.

Full text
Abstract:
Grafting and Budding is a comprehensive and clearly written, practical guide to all of the grafting and budding techniques any professional or home gardener is likely to need. The book begins with a brief history of the subject, explains how grafting works and shows why it is now the preferred technique for propagating most commercial plants. It then describes the basics of budding, grafting and multi-grafting and presents step-by-step instructions for making the special cuts used in grafting and budding. Advice is also given on the selection of scion wood, the preparation of rootstocks and the after-care of grafted plants. The methods of budding and grafting are explained in fine detail, including T-budding, chip budding and patch budding, the splice graft, wedge graft, whip and tongue graft, side graft, bark graft and approach graft, the grafting of herbaceous plants and machine bench grafting. More than 60 sketches and photographs are included to help illustrate various aspects of the skill of grafting. New to this edition are sections covering the preferred methods of propagation for Australian natives such as eucalypts, banksias, hakeas and grevilleas; cacti; conifers; general deciduous ornamentals; black passionfruit; roses and tomatoes, making it an indispensable addition to any avid gardener’s bookshelf.
