Full textBy focussing primarily on the precolonial vision of India, this research offers an alternative perspective on colonial representations, as well as new contributions to the concept of otherness. It is argued that the 17th century european perception of India differs from colonial constructions, which is partly due to new power relations and the assertion of modernity. Representations are thus placed into several broad categories reflecting europe's quest for a political, social and religious identity. As a result, india is, either perceived as Europe's alter ego or its radical Other. There is nevertheless a third way which is seen to disrupt the rigid binarism of representations, as a new paradigm emerges to subsume otherness. With the East India Company's accession to the diwani of Bengal, the english attemppted to redefine their imperial identity and their power relations. Yet, the distinction between the reformist's ideals of assimilation and the orientalists' respect for indian culture was often very slight. The drive towards conciliation and the tension between differences and similitarities would eventually open up an area of hybridity, in which both the indian and english elite borrowed from each other's symbols and values. After the rebellion of 1857, the british were to adopt a radical approach to alterity, which would offer systematic and manageable representations of colonial subjects. Indo-English hybridity remains visible in post-colonial icons, however, whereas music and literature keep reinventing its complex architecture

Full textThe focus of contemporary media (radio and television) on scientific knowledge is a relatively recent phenomenon. Most importantly, media exploitation of expert opinion and the modes of transmission of scientific knowledge within the public domain of the media have been the object of very few empirical studies up to now. This research examines the use of television by the scientific community, and more specifically, specialists in social sciences, from the previously unexplored standpoint of researchers currently in the spotlight. This work is based on interviews with ‘visible scientists’ from France, Germany and USA. An analysis of the perceptions of popularising science on television is complemented by systematic quantitative research into the media appearances. The thesis also examines thoroughly the political exploitation of scientific research in the media and how it wavers between ideology and expertise, generating confusion between the authoritative role of science and that of politics. On the other hand, feedback from researchers' peers allowed to examine the state of the relation between academic and media credentials. Finally, in order not to neglect the effects of media notoriety on many researchers who up till now have worked in a closed academic environment, we also take stock of existing dialectic relationships between the opening up to new markets, to new powers and symbolic and financial rewards, and the nature of the scientific opinions broadcast in the media

Full textAt the crossroads of research on development conditions, development aid and comparative policies, this dissertation explores the comparative dimension of development aid policies towards West Africa taking the case of China, India and Japan between 1997 and 2010. Indeed, although these three countries belong to the same geographical zone, they are very different as regards to economic resources, political situation, national concerns and historical context. Based on the forty-eight reports of ministries and governmental agencies of China, India and Japan, almost eight hundred literatures, 73 interviews with researchers, experts in administrations and industries in five countries, the dissertation analyzes the observable differences in development aid policies carried out by these countries. The research seeks to understand whether each country’ specificities determine their development aid strategy. Beyond the technical issues (organisational system, delivery system, aid destination) specific to the three policies, the research compares motivations which encourage to offer development assistance to West Africa. The research marks the very first comparison of Asian aid policies

Full textIn this thesis, we pursue two main objectives: compare the use of mathematics by engineers in their workplace with the mathematics training they receive in France, and propose innovative teaching that could bring training closer together to the needs revealed. We use the framework of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and we begin by defining the notion of "mathematical praxeology" to analyse the mathematical activity of engineers in the institutions they attend. We classify in two categories the six types of praxeologies identified in the workplace: "proper" praxeologies (basics, statistics, specific) and "transversal" (modelling, reasoning, communication). In initial training in France, it seems that the bases and the reasoning are mainly taught in the preparatory cycle. In the engineering cycle, statistics and specific courses are most often offered, but the training seems to lack of applications and connections with the everyday reality of engineers.Faced with these observations, we propose the establishment, in the engineering cycle, of a Study and Research Path in statistics and chemistry. We observe that the generative question allows students to advance on a signed route while allowing them to develop exchanges along with their autonomy. This device seems to place future engineers in situations where mathematics play a leading role, offering a good approach to professional praxeologies

Full textThe thesis is divided into three parties which focuse on the French-Polish relationships between the social sciences in their material. Political and intelectual dimension. The first part describes the number of Polish researchers arriving to France and the number of French scientists going to Poland. As well as the institutions involved in the coopération, its organisation and the material obstacles of the relationships. The second part starts with a description of Polish-French scientifical relationships between 1944 and 1993, focusing on the contacts between the Polish researchers and 6th Section of EPHE. Moreover. The author analyses the political and ideological obstacles and the limits of coopération. The third part shows the points of understanding and misunderstanding between the Polish historians and l'école des Annales. Then, the author decribes the factors which intensified the relations and shows the numerous manifestations of the coopération
