Abstract:
Biological matters have been in continuous encounter with extreme environmental conditions leading to their evolution over millions of years. The fittest have survived through continuous evolution, an ongoing process. Biological surfaces are the important active interfaces between biological matters and the environment, and have been evolving over time to a higher state of intelligent functionality. Bioinspired surfaces with special functionalities have grabbed attention in materials research in the recent times. The microstructures and mechanisms behind these functional biological surfaces with interesting properties have inspired scientists to create artificial materials and surfaces which possess the properties equivalent to their counterparts. In this review, we have described the interplay between unique multiscale (micro- and nano-scale) structures of biological surfaces with intrinsic material properties which have inspired researchers to achieve the desired wettability and functionalities. Inspired by naturally occurring surfaces, researchers have designed and fabricated novel interfacial materials with versatile functionalities and wettability, such as superantiwetting surfaces (superhydrophobic and superoleophobic), omniphobic, switching wettability and water collecting surfaces. These strategies collectively enable functional surfaces to be utilized in different applications such as fog harvesting, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), catalysis, sensing and biological applications. This paper delivers a critical review of such inspiring biological surfaces and artificial bioinspired surfaces utilized in different applications, where material science and engineering have merged by taking inspiration from the natural systems.

Abstract:
In recent years road construction is a subject of dynamic changes. The main challenge for designers and technologists is to develop durable and environmental friendly road technologies that can be successfully applied on natural valuable areas. The paper presents selected modern material and technological solutions used for road pavements on areas under special protection (eg Natura 2000). An example of modern environmentally friendly solutions in road construction are: asphalt pavements with the addition of rubber from used car tires, asphalt mixtures with reduced emissions of volatile substances, “quiet” pavements, pavements from recycled materials and from local materials, “biologically active” pavements (permeable mineral layers). Modern and ecological pavements are the important part of science activity of Warsaw University of Technology. New ongoing project is designed to identify the main directions of technological development of road construction in the next 30 years, with a particular emphasis on the sustainable development and environmental protection. As a part of the two ongoing projects, test sections of pavement have been completed. One of test sections with the addition of crumb rubber and the second one as a “quiet” pavement. For the next years, the sections will be monitored. The proper selection of materials and technologies on natural valuable areas does not deteriorate the durability of road pavement, comfort and safety on the roads and at the same time it can improve environmental safety without interfering with the functioning of valuable ecosystems.

Abstract:
As a novel material, Mg-based foam material not only has fantastic physical characteristics, such as low density, high specific surface area, high specific strength and stiffness, and good biocompatibility, but also has special functional properties, for example, electromagnetic wave shielding, vibration reduction, sound absorption, and so on. It can be widely applied to aeronautical and aerospace, military, shipbuilding, transportation, automotive and medical industries. Mg-based foam material was prepared by direct foaming in magnesium alloy liquid in this study, and the effect of technological parameters on the products, such as addition amount of and granularity of SiC particles and MgCO3 particles, stirring temperature, stirring time, stirring velocity, foaming temperature and foaming time, was investigated. The aim of this research was to develop a new technology which could fabricate large scale Mg-based foam material in air condition. The results showed that variations of technological parameters may affect preparation of the foam materials in some extent and resulted in the changes of the products in apparent density, porosity and structural uniformity. The light weight Mg-based foam with homogeneous pores could be obtained by suitable combination of the technological parameters.

Abstract:
The study of the economic institutions of the diffusion of convergent technologies in the modern economy has a direct connection with sustainable development. The expansion of ultra-modern industries in the course of the "tertialization" of the economy (the growth of the sector of high-tech material and non-material production) makes it possible to significantly reduce resource consumption and the burden on the environment, while maintaining and increasing traditional economic values (income, well-being, employment, quality of life). The expansion of convergent technologies in technologically advanced countries is taking place in parallel with the formation of a "green" economy, which forms an independent technological platform for sustainable development, and may become the main one in the coming decades. The innovative upgrade of the extractive industries up to the Industry 4.0 level, based on this platform, requires special support from the state, primarily in the extractive countries. A special role in this process is assigned to the institutional support for the diffusion of convergent technologies, which is especially in demand in the Russian economy.

Abstract:
The paper presents some questions of designing and testing for modern ballistic protecting screens and applied materials especially such as ceramics. Continuous development of present ballistic composite materials enforces the optimisation of existing solutions for ballistic protections in respect to the mass, thickness and costs of material. In times of technological arm race a reduction of armour weight by 5% is a success. It may be achieved by development of new solutions of armour systems applying the newest materials. Ballistic ceramics both enhances the resistance of the armour against armour piercing projectiles and reduces its areal dencity in relation to traditional steel armours due to high mechanical properties, low density, high hardness and dissipation of energy at the mechanism of breaking. The paper illustrates the development of ceramic based armours and the structure of a multilayer ballistic protection, and finally the meaning of its particular layers in fighting the projectile. Moreover the impact of mechanical properties of some ceramic materials used for designing a protection system into its ballistic resistance is discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Metropolis displays a deeply conflicting attitude toward industrial modernity. Conceived and marketed as a marvel of film technology, the film pursued the techno-romantic project of transcending material reality through technological means. What is more, the goal was to capture the unfathomability of technology itself. Metropolis simultaneously portrays technology as an agent of tyranny and dehumanization and flaunts it as spectacle. Special effects facilitate encounters with overpowering technological environments and omnipotent machines, which give rise to sentiments that are best described in terms of a “technological sublime.” The sublime characterizes experiences that go beyond the earthly and finite, to attain a spiritual dimension. In attributing transcendent qualities to mechanical objects, the technological sublime embodies the technoromantic paradigm.

Abstract:
As a form of popular mass entertainment and an apparatus for the automatic reproduction of material reality, cinema’s artistic aspirations seemed futile. Some early commentators nonetheless asserted that the new medium could be a legitimate object of aesthetic scrutiny. In an attempt to fathom cinema’s immaterial values, early film theorists including Herbert Tannenbaum and Georg Lukács explored cinema’s kinship with folk art, mental processes and the fantastic. They argued that film technology, specifically special effects, could articulate ideas in a sensual form and thus provide a pathway to a spiritual dimension. As this chapter shows, their techno-romantic lines of argument conceptualized the medium within established aesthetics and set the stage for the recognition of cinema as the first technological art.

Abstract:
German silent cinema is famous for its unconventional aesthetics and film-technological innovations. These characteristics were the result of efforts to reconcile the new medium’s automatic reproductions of physical reality with idealist conceptions of art. Special effects played a crucial role in this endeavour. They afforded creative experiments with the cinematic apparatus and inspired filmmakers to convey ideas and emotions. Special effects embodied the “techno-romantic” project of construing technology as a means for transcending material reality. This common response to industrial modernity profoundly shaped German silent film culture. The techno-romantic paradigm formed the basis of one of the most creative periods in film history and proved instrumental in the evolution of cinematic expressivity and film art.

Abstract:
The majority of municipal (urban) solid waste (MSW) is disposed of in landfills (anaerobic composting). However, this disposal system is reported to produce hazardous environmental impacts, and new policies are initiated to protect the environment from such impacts by discouraging the practice of disposal of solid waste in landfills. Eco-friendly disposal alternatives to landfills need to be explored. One of the technological options for treatment and disposal of organic solid wastes is vermicomposting. Instead of using conventional composting methods, the vermicomposting method can be used for the disposal of the waste. The enzymatic and microbial activities that occur during vermicomposting process by worms gives a better end product than using the conventional composting. Food waste will be recovered for vermicomposting, and the end products can be organic fertilizer, soil improver, and an alternative source of potential energy. Vermicomposting or vermiculture is an eco-friendly process whereby worms are used to breakdown the organic waste into soil and humus known as vermicast, vermicompost, or earthworm compost. The objective is to process the organic material as quickly and efficiently as possible. During the breakdown of organic matter by the earthworm, humus, which is a complicated material, is formed. The material formed is high in content of nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus, which are the main elements required by plants for their growth, health, and freshness.

How do digital communication technologies mobilize the enactment of family celebrations in a transnational setting? This chapter unwraps the bittersweet moments of digital media use by migrants and their left-behind family members to enact intimate interactions during special family occasions. In the first instance, it showcases the joyful, creative, and customized moments embodied by transnational family members through the circulation of personalized messages and material gifts. However, it also exposes the frustrating experiences encountered by dispersed family members, as shaped by asymmetrical familial dynamics, economic status, uneven access, digital literacy, and technological parameters. Ultimately, this chapter opens a critical conversation on the paradoxical outcomes of the reliance of transnational family members on smartphones, social media, and mobile applications to reclaim and revive traditional and household celebrations in their efforts to sustain ties at a distance.

Abstract:
During the antebellum decades, the patterns of map production and consumption were profoundly altered by technological innovations. The inventions of machine-made paper, lithographic printing, steam-powered presses, and an expanded transportation network altered the faces of the American map industry and the map themselves. Adapting the business models explored by Carey and Melish, a new generation of Philadelphia map publishers, in particular Henry S. Tanner and Samuel A. Mitchell, experimented with a new form of map authorship based on production teams and modern business practices. By pooling the knowledge of map designers as well as engravers and colorists familiar with different printing techniques, and by controlling the construction of special map paper and sales networks, they introduced new designs that changed the look of maps and their materiality. Finally, this chapter shows how the art of mapmaking became increasingly tied to the art of map selling; bolstered by a decline in production costs, a single map design would support multiple material formats, from erasable pasteboards and atlas maps to multicolored wall maps and handkerchief maps.

Abstract:
Our time is openly nostalgic because the idea of progress for a better future has been in a systemic crisis for several decades. Despite constant technological innovations in communication, digitization and automation, our values, civil institutions and governance systems are progressively losing all credibility. This situation produces a slippery nostalgia without ideology of an ephemeral, consumerist and objectified nature, which contrasts with other moments in history in which nostalgia had clear disruptive purposes aimed to the renewal of social praxis. Architecture has experienced this phenomenon in a special way since, being a material discipline, architecture has great capacities for transforming the scenarios of social life. This chapter proposes a narration of this phenomenon in reverse, from today-to-yesterday, to conclude with a proposal for the practice of memory without nostalgia. In this story, we will give preponderance to three very specific historical moments of epistemological rupture rather than a panorama of continuity: the present historicist postmodernism, 19th century eclecticism, and the Renaissance as key moments in the problematic relationship between architecture and nostalgia.

Abstract:
Not for the first time, in my works, I emphasize that the true value of any state is its citizens, but everyone must remember that children are future citizens, who today are formed by all structures of our lives: parents, teachers, peers and society as a whole. However, Ukrainian society, having undergone significant changes compared to Soviet times, still retains many of its features. Thus, for a significant transformation of society, it is necessary to systematically transform the institutions of property and power, which will last for many years. Under these conditions, we are not only observers, but also direct participants in changes in Ukrainian education in particular. The Reform of the New Ukrainian School, which was developed by a community of specialists since 2012, aimed to change the lives of children in school – to make education useful for their successful self-realization in the world of the XXI century. In addition, the current stage of the transformations in education in Ukraine considers the health of citizens (especially mental) as a powerful component of national development. However, the entry of young people into the third millennium was marked by ecological, economic, political, and social deformation of the structure of society. That is why the relevance of the study of aggression and behavioral styles in conflict situations of children is due to the need to study the internal, subjective, psychological factors that determine their mental development and further adaptive strategies to respond to interpersonal relationships in the team, particularly among middle school students, because the age barrier for children is a transition to adulthood. Special attention in the section is paid to the diagnosis and analysis of the behavior of students who are also in the process of changing the system of institutional (boarding) care in Ukraine. The main consequences of treatment of children from the institution by parents deprived of parental rights are considered, as well as the consequences for the mental health of such children are determined, which is confirmed by analytical materials of health (conclusions of qualified specialists) at the time of enrollment. As a result, the study revealed the concept and causes of «bullying» in a particular educational institution, in particular, which was a trigger for negative interpersonal relationships in the team in accordance with the social experience of certain children. The article conducts research between the pupils of institutional care and students who have full-fledged families. In addition, despite its exceptional significance, the problem of bullying in the domestic psychological literature is practically not covered, which is why it needs further research. In the process of elaboration of the section, in addition, the results of psychological diagnostics of children of institutional care according to the projective method of detecting symptom complexes of the emotional sphere and their violation due to the facts of treatment by parents are provided. With the help of didactic material the characteristics and researches carried out according to the methods of Bass-Darki and K. Thomas for groups of middle class children who are in different social statuses are carried out. The research results are processed and presented in the form of histograms. Conclusions from this study are presented and further actions are proposed to eliminate negative phenomena in the student environment, create a psychologically comfortable atmosphere of the educational environment, humanize the educational process, the formation of a mentally balanced, confident personality.

Abstract:
The composition and content of fluid inclusions in the main structural and technological types of vein quartz of the Fenkina-Lampi deposit were studied by gas chromatography. It is shown that H2O dominates (90–99%) in the gases composition released from quartz under heating to 1000°C, CO2, CO, N2 and hydrocarbon compounds contents are much less. Quartz is characterized by high gassing in the high-temperature region (600–1000°C) comparable to gassing in the low-temperature interval (100–600°C), which is a negative indicator of the quality of quartz as a raw material for high-quality glass melting. It is necessary to develop a special purification technology for this quartz, which will take into account the features of its saturation with gas-liquid inclusions.

Abstract:
Hyper-compressors operating in plants with both vessel and tubular reactors are subject to very high pressures. Many cylinder components are exposed to pressures fluctuating between suction and discharge and therefore to high fatigue loads. To reach high endurance capabilities, the cylinder components have to be pre-compressed in order to keep them operating under compressive stress whenever possible. Special materials and shrink fitting procedures are usually required. In other cases or for complex shapes, other technological processes, like autofrettage, are also applied to further improve the pre-stress level. The application of autofrettage requires special rigs to withstand the severe processing conditions and an intensifier to reach final pressures up to 1.4 GPa. Suitable sealing elements, identified through extensive experience, allow to reach very high pressures required to adequately strain the material. The pressure transmitting fluid must also have specific characteristics to avoid solidification. The autofrettage process requires special conditions to increase, maintain and remove the pressure on the system in order to achieve the desired deformation when the plastic strain region is reached. This produces an optimum autofrettage result for enhanced reliability and safe operation of the components.

Small Punch (SP) test technique enables measurement of the realistic material properties at the critical locations in the component both prior and after long-term operation. The paper shows the examples of the sampling of testing material from the critical components of the industrial plants and the procedures for determination of tensile and fracture characteristics by SP tests at ambient and low temperatures. The special attention is devoted to the test specimen orientation for determination of SP fracture energy ESP.

Abstract:
The clay brick is one of the oldest building materials, and as the use of waste in the bricks can reduce clay consummation and the environmental burden due to the accumulation of waste, the present study was chosen, the addition of mineral and organic waste to the clay brick. The added value of this work, which was carried out within the Institute of Building Materials at VGTU, is that the mixture studied is very special, because the raw materials used are: − Yellow Clay (C) from Fez which is used only in the field of pottery; − Pyrrhotite Ash (PA) which is a mineral waste produced during the manufacture of sulphuric acid from the roasting of pyrrhotite ore. This waste is stored in the open air since 1982 and until now it doesn't have any specific use; − Cedar Sawdust (S) is an organic waste regenerate by the artisanal sector from Fez. The bricks’ technological properties depended on the amount of ashes used. So, adding 5% S to the mixture (20% PA – 80% C) gives rise to a new material that is light, porous with a natural brick red colour. Most importantly, this material exhibits mechanical strength according to the standards of a terracotta brick.

Abstract:
Russia has significant reserves of low-value soft deciduous wood (birch, aspen, alder, poplar), which are practically not processed, the wood rots in the forest and in the lower warehouses. Wood is a good and widespread building material. Due to the significant strength, low volume weight, ease of processing, ease of manufacturing and assembly of structures, wood has long been used for the construction of bridges. At present, despite the widespread use of reinforced concrete bridges, in the forest-rich northern and eastern regions of Russia, wooden bridges can be very useful on logging roads. But wooden bridges have a number of significant drawbacks: they have a short service life, are subject to rot, are not fire-resistant, and do not meet the requirements for passing modern loads. In order to ensure the safe and uninterrupted transport of timber on logging roads, special attention should be paid to the construction material for the construction of bridges. The proposed construction material is based on low-value soft hardwood, has high performance characteristics. To improve the performance of the wood, it is necessary to impregnate it-giving it the desired properties and compress it-thereby increasing the density, hardness and strength. We have developed a technology that combines three main technological operations of wood modification: impregnation, pressing and drying, while allowing us to obtain a structural material with increased performance characteristics, suitable for the manufacture of load-bearing supports, as well as beams of wooden bridges on logging roads.

Abstract:
Due to its excellent material properties, titanium is an important structural material for several application fields in the aerospace industry, the chemical industry, medical engineering or marine technologies. Especially its excellent weight-strength ratio, high-temperature strength corrosion resistance and not least its biocompatibility enables a wide field of special applications. These properties can be improved by alloying of other chemical elements. Despite good availability of resources and moderate world market prices, there is only a limited application range for titanium. Main reasons comprise technological problems in manufacturing processes, particularly related to establish forming technologies such as deep drawing or hydroforming. The forming tool is of significant importance in forming technologies. Beside the function of shape storage the tool must provide the essential forming parameters such as mechanical functions (e.g. blank holder, sealing etc.), but also temperature and tribology. Especially the tribology, also related to forming temperatures, is very critical during titanium forming due to a distinctive tendency of adhesion. For this reason, a high number of titanium components are manufactured by milling. Parts made by forming of basically thin blank, show only low complexity. More complex components are made by welding of simple shaped parts. Thus, large-series manufacturing of titanium components is limited due to the extensive production cost. By describing three examples, this paper shows possibilities and challenges in manufacturing of titanium components based on sheet metals. Beside the process parameters, a special focus of the investigations lies on the coating of forming tools. Example one is cold forming of thin titanium blanks to speaker cones. The second example demonstrates superplastic forming of a medical application, and finally the third example consists of hot gas forming of a titanium exhaust manifold. The investigations have shown that based on optimized technological parameters in combination with new tool coatings, the manufacturing of complex sheet metal based titanium applications is applicable for large-series production.

Abstract:
The ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) is relatively new and promising process for fatigue life improvement of welded elements and structures. In most industrial applications this process is known as ultrasonic peening (UP). The beneficial effect of UIT/UP is achieved mainly by relieving of harmful tensile residual stresses and introducing of compressive residual stresses into surface layers of a material, decreasing of stress concentration in weld toe zones and enhancement of mechanical properties of the surface layers of the material. The UP technique is based on the combined effect of high frequency impacts of special strikers and ultrasonic oscillations in treated material. Fatigue testing of welded specimens showed that UP is the most efficient improvement treatment as compared with traditional techniques such as grinding, TIG-dressing, heat treatment, hammer peening and application of LTT electrodes. The developed computerized complex for UP was successfully applied for increasing the fatigue life and corrosion resistance of welded elements, elimination of distortions caused by welding and other technological processes, residual stress relieving, increasing of the hardness of the surface of materials. The UP could be effectively applied for fatigue life improvement during manufacturing, rehabilitation and repair of welded elements and structures. The areas/industries where the UP process was applied successfully include: Shipbuilding, Railway and Highway Bridges, Construction Equipment, Mining, Automotive, Aerospace. The results of fatigue testing of welded elements in as-welded condition and after application of UP are considered in this paper. It is shown that UP is the most effective and economic technique for increasing of fatigue strength of welded elements in materials of different strength. These results also show a strong tendency of increasing of fatigue strength of welded elements after application of UP with the increase in mechanical properties of the material used.

Abstract:
During the last decades, the importance of machining in manufacturing industry has required rigorous scientific studies concerning the chip formation process in order to determine optimal speeds, feeds or other technological parameters. For all types of machining including turning, milling, grinding, honing or lapping, the phenomenon of chip formation is similar in terms of the local interaction between the tool and the work piece. Because of the intensive use of CNC machine tools producing parts at ever-faster rates, it has become important to provide analysis of high speed cutting where complex loading conditions occur during the fabrication process: high gradients of the thermo-mechanical variables, strong nonlinearities of the thermo-mechanical coupling, large plastic strains, extremely high strain rates compared to that of other forming processes, important influence of the contact friction and of the microstructure evolution. Today many scientific researches are focalized on finite element analyses of the chip formation and of its morphology evolution during a high speed metals cutting process. To improve the quality of the numerical predictions, a better description of the local shear band formation is needed, using adequate rheological models. On this point of view this paper deals with the influence of the rheological behavior formulation on the morphology and geometry of the chip formation during a finite element simulation of a high speed metal cutting process. Numerical simulations of a high speed orthogonal cutting of special steels are employed to analysis the sensitivity of the numerical results describing the local cutting area with respect to different rheological laws: Norton-Hoff or Cowper-Symonds model, Johnson-Cook one or Zerilli-Armstrong formulation. To obtain a better description of the local material loadings and to take into account the important gradient of the strain rate, plastic strain and temperature values, a more adequate constitutive model is proposed by the author.

The development of technological progress makes increased demands on the strength properties of structural elements of buildings and structures, machines and mechanisms, and a decrease in their material consumption. This leads to the need for effective use of existing and creation of new methods of solid mechanics and the training of new highly qualified specialists. Additionally, having control over the objects` sizes will allow potential users (designers, engineers etc.) to consider the desired properties in the optimization problem. Otherwise, it would be both quite difficult and inefficient to utilize. This article describes a system for CAD modelling. Its implementation is based on open-source software, such as Python programming language, Jupyterlab and FEniCS library. The system also supports topological optimization and allows its user to integrate the desired numerical methods, which is currently not supported in the existing solutions. The execution time of solving the example problem was measured and presented together with the result. Special attention was paid to the comparison of the described solution with the currently existing ones.
