Abstract:
Performance characteristics were evaluated for two lateral-flow test kits, Reveal for Ruminant in Feed (Neogen Corporation) and FeedChek (Strategic Diagnostics Inc.), designed to detect ruminant or terrestrial animal proteins in feeds. The stringent acceptance criteria used were developed by the Center for Veterinary Medicine Office of Research to identify test kits with comparable selectivity and sensitivity to microscopy and PCR assay, the analytical methods used by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Guidelines were developed for evaluating the selectivity, sensitivity, ruggedness, and spec-ificity of these kits. These guidelines further stated that ruggedness and specificity testing would be performed only after a test passed both the selectivity and sensitivity assessments. Acceptance criteria for determining success were developed using a statistical approach requiring 90% probability of achieving the correct response, within a 95% confidence interval. A minimum detection level of 0.1% bovine meat and bone meal, consistent with the sensitivity of the methods used by the FDA, was required. Selectivity was assessed by testing 60 dairy feed samples that contained no added animal proteins; sensitivity was determined by evaluating 60 samples (per level of fortification) of the same feed that contained 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, or 2% bovine meat and bone meal. The Reveal test passed the selectivity assessment but failed the sensitivity assessment, detecting only samples fortified at the 2% level and then only 17 to 33% of those samples, when read according to the label directions. The FeedChek test passed the sensitivity assessment but failed the selectivity assessment, with rates for false-positive results ranging from 34 to 38%, depending on the user. The sensitivity of the Reveal test was affected by the concentration of trace minerals present in the feed; concentrations toward the high end of the normal range prevented the detection of true positive feed samples containing bovine meat and bone meal. Better sensitivity assessments were obtained when lamb meal was used either alone or in combination with bovine meat and bone meal. The FeedChek test was not affected by the concentration of trace minerals or by the type of animal meal used. These results indicate that neither of the two tests is adequate for routine regulatory use.

Abstract:
The ability of the Bactigen® Salmonella Shigella (BSST), the Microscreen® (MS), and the Spectate® (SPECT) latex agglutination kits to detect Salmonella in pure cultures and in naturally contaminated foods was examined. Of 190 Salmonella strains tested, the MS, BSST, and SPECT systems correctly identified 89.5, 81.6, and 66.3% of the test cultures, respectively. The sensitivity of SPECT increased to 92.7% when only strains belonging to the targeted serogroups (somatic A to E plus G) and strains harboring the Vi antigen were considered. The lack of specificity of the MS (3.4%), SPECT (17.0%), and BSST (33.9%) systems with 59 cultures of nonsalmonellae varied widely, with Citrobacter freundii and Escherichia coli accounting for many of the false-positive reactions. Examination of foods according to the prescribed MS and SPECT analytical test protocols identified respectively, 18 (75%) and 19 (79.2%) of the 24 food samples found to contain Salmonella spp. by a standard cultural method. Although instructions with the BSST kit indicate that the product is intended for the analysis of clinical samples, the system nevertheless identified 21 (87.5%) contaminated food samples under homologous MS and SPECT test conditions. The concurrent use of TBG43 with enrichment media recommended by kit manufactures enhanced the sensitivities of MS (83.3%), SPECT (91.7%), and BSST (91.7%). Attempts to effect greater method brevity through the application of latex kits at various stages of the standard cultural procedure were counterproductive.

Abstract:
In this paper I show that there is an elliptical construction in Brazilian Portuguese involving nunca ('never') restricted to locally moved wh-subjects and provide an account of this peculiar restriction. The construction in question corresponds to the sequence Quem nunca? ('Who never?'), which is used as a follow-up comment to a declarative sentence such as Pedro beijou João ('Pedro kissed João'), meaning 'Who did never kiss João?'. Curiously, the wh-element in such cases must correspond to the locally moved subject. I argue that the construction in question provides evidence for Bošković's (2023) proposal regarding two different positions for wh-movement, in which local wh-subjects move to a position below CP and above TP, whereas other wh-elements all move to Spec,CP. I also show this approach provides evidence for the view in which a Spec-head relation is needed for ellipsis licensing.

Abstract:
This study is part of the research program beyond the sea® aiming to develop kites as auxiliary propulsion devices for ships. The goal is to use the energy of the wind to save fuel and reduce harmful emissions. Such a project needs numerous developments and scientific actions, particularly to model the behavior of giant kites and associated ships. However these models must be compared to measurements to assess their validity. This study is then focus on the measurements of the interaction between kites and ships, at a limited scale in comparison to the real scope of the project. Thus measurement campaigns were carried out on a 13-meter long trawler, and on a 6-meter long experimental platform specifically designed. Another experimental campaign was also carried out onshore to assess the aerodynamic specs of the kite. Each of these three campaigns was based on a complex experimental set-up, including an automatic kite control system. In addition to provide a valuable data set for further scientific analyses, this study provided also tools which can be used by the industrial partners of the beyond the sea project®

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the differences of programming with the Unreal Engine 3’s visual scripting tool Kismet versus traditional programming. A simple action adventure game was developed with the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) in order to gain experience with the tool. UDK is the free version of Epic Games’ game engine Unreal Engine 3. The resulting game has a mixture of a third person behind the character default camera and fixed camera angles. The gameplay is simple; the playable character can run, investigate the level, shoot and lift and push objects. The game focused on exploration and puzzle solving. The writer found programming with Kismet to be easy to get into and highly useful. It was preferred over traditional programming for beginners. The same principles of planning ahead before writing code applied even to visual programming. It was concluded that good structure to the code was very important for larger sequences in order to have readable code. For complex gameplay classes the Unreal Engine 3’s own programming language UnrealScript was preferred. The resulting opinions of programming with a visual language are of highly subjective nature and suggestions for further studies were given.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to examine if users of digital music games may acquire skills from the games that may be of use in learning to play a real instrument, that is a non-digitally simulated instrument like an acoustic piano. We have used Gee’s theory regarding a possible interconnection between different semiotic domains, and how this connection may enable a transfer of skills between related domains. In this thesis we examine possible skill transfer between the domains “digital games” and “non-digital instruments”. To examine our question formulation we chose to conduct a pilot study from which we collected both quantitative and qualitative data. The study was conducted on two groups of children, 6-9 years old, and consisted of the children accepting a musical challenge. The children in one of the groups got access to a digital piano application during a preparatory week, whilst the children in the second group lived their lives as usual. The results, and the time it took for the children to perform the assignment, was documented by the parents of the children in a questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire was then analyzed and used to draw conclusions regarding the possible effect of the piano application on the children. The analysis of the collected data showed that all children that had used the application passed the challenge. The analysis also showed that the child that had the fastest passing time on the challenge had used the application, and that the group of children that had used the application showed a faster average time for passing the challenge than the children who had not used the application. Even though some indicative patterns did emerge through our analysis of the collected data no definitive conclusions could be drawn regarding transfer of skills between the semiotic domains “digital games” and “non-digital instruments”.

Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to analyze what went wrong with the adventure game project called Fairytale, I started together with 4 of my fellow university students at Gotland University, spring 2007. My ambition with this report is to enlighten problems in game design that arose during the game development process in order to prevent others from making the same mistakes. The problems are analyzed according to game design patterns defined by Björk, S. and Holopainen, J. (2005). Patterns in Game Design. Boston, Massachusetts. Jenifer Niles. The game was exhibited to the public at Gotland Game Awards 2007, Leipzig Game Developers Conference 2007, Tekniska Museet 2007, Almedalsveckan 2008 and Gotland Game Awards 2008. The results of the report show that redesigning already finished game features means a lot of troubles in relation to its dependency on other game elements. The key abilities of the main character were vaguely defined since the beginning of the project which caused problems with earlier designed levels whenever a new item was introduced. The terrain of the prior levels didn’t match the abilities of the new items, which forced changes to be made. The biggest mistake with this project was that finished game elements never were considered final. My role in the project was the solo game programmer and co-designer. I shared the designing tasks together with Annika Fogelgren who also was the producer of our team. Albertina Sparrhult, Emma Johansson and Marie Viberg were our core graphic artists. Together, we created the Fairytale game.

Abstract:
Abstract The advancement of technology has brought about ease of life with the help of technology automation which can be applied virtually in all aspects of living. With the emergence of internet of things, prototyping real state systems has become less expensive and easy to embark on thus creating platforms for development in the oil & gas sector. This research aims to analyze, design, and develop an effortless system powered via solar energy for the control of a sprinkler system and liquid flow void of human intervention. The system was programmed using an Arduino board and other hardware at an adjustable set time with Arduino software. The research is geared at reducing human efforts in irrigation systems, to save cost and time in sprinkling liquid on any system. The use of some weather parameters like humidity, temperature, and moisture sensors; Arduino kits and GSM module constitutes the smart irrigation system setup. The system is automated to feed the necessary quantity of liquid to any given surface based on design parameters with the moisture sensor programmed within 0 to 1023 (0-100%) range. The system adapted a method of pump-start at 40% moisture reading. Various analysis of the research findings has been presented in the work with applicability in remote areas and oil fields void of human intervention.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess the subsea well intervention capabilities in Brazil from an operator point of view and how it compares to other regions in the world, in terms of equipment availability, technology and readiness. The object of this assessment will be restricted to the well access systems, given the numerous scenarios that can drive a subsea well intervention. The intent is to identify the main challenges an International Oil Company (IOC) and/or Local Oil Company (LOC) operating in Brazil must overcome in order to keep a robust and realistic contingency plan in case of any well integrity issue. Also, similar challenges are experienced whenever production restoration is needed and/or even opportunities for production enhancement are economically assessed to viable, or not. Last but not least, well access during the last phase of a well lifecycle (plug and abandonment) is also a key element. This will be discussed further in. Until the late 90's, the subsea oil industry in Brazil was restricted to the state-run operator and the supply chain to the business had developed itself around the mindset to maidenly supply a single state-run operator demand. After the market opening and consolidation of the IOC's and LOC's in the subsea market, a lack of local supply of several goods and services started to present itself. Since well access systems are expensive and the base case is that you won't use it unless you have a problem, there's a strong unconscious desire not to worry about it until you really need it. Sharing the same view, service companies tend to enforce the sale of these kits to the operator, rather than focus on a rental solution. Moreover, when service companies provide rental solutions, they are not kept in country and mobilization fees and lead time become a showstopper on many cases. In view of the scenario described above and ways of operation of the Brazilian market IOC's and LOC's a solution will be proposed to mitigate the risk of unavailability and reduce costs based on the sharing economy principles.
