Abstract:
The supplier selection process can be done using multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods in firms. There are many MCDM Methods, but firms must choose the method suitable with the firm condition. Company A has analyzed supplier’s ranking using TOPSIS method. TOPSIS method has a marjor weakness in its subjective weighting. This flaw is overcome using AHP method weighting having undergone a consistency test. In this study, the comparison of supplier’s ranking using TOPSIS and AHP-TOPSIS method used correlation test. The aim of this paper is to determine different result from two methods. Data in suppliers’ ranking is ordinal data, so this process used Spearman’s rank and Kendall’s tau b correlation. If most of the ranked scored are same, Kendall’s tau b correlation should be used. The other way, Spearman rank should be used. The result of this study is that most of the ranked scored are different, so the process used Spearman rank p-value of Spearman’s rank correlation of 0.505. It is greater than 0.05, means there is no statistically significant correlation between two methods. Furthermore, increment or decrement of supplier’s ranking in one method is not significantly related to the increment or decrement of supplier’s ranking in the second method

Abstract:
The small sample properties of a variant of the Spearman rank correlation coefficient applied in the time-series context were investigated through Monte Carlo methods. The rank method ( r1S) has even greater bias than the highly biased conventional parametric procedure; a traditional test of H0: ρ1 = 0 based on ( r1S) yields unacceptable properties. Empirical small sample distributions associated with the rank coefficient differ markedly from the distributions predicted by asymptotic theory. It is concluded that neither rank nor conventional parametric estimators and hypothesis tests are appropriate for very small samples in applications of time-series analysis that have been recommended in the behavioral and social science literature.

Abstract:
In this study, we developed a modified version of the CRiteria Importance Through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) method, namely the Distance Correlation-based CRITIC (D-CRITIC) method. The usage of the method was illustrated by evaluating the weights of five smartphone criteria. The same evaluation was repeated using four other objective weighting methods, including the original CRITIC method. The results from all the methods were further analyzed based on three different tests (i.e., the distance correlation test, the Spearman rank-order correlation test, and the symmetric mean absolute percentage error test) to validate D-CRITIC. The tests revealed that D-CRITIC could produce more valid criteria weights and ranks than the original CRITIC method since D-CRITIC yielded a higher average distance correlation, a higher average Spearman rank-order correlation, and a lower symmetric mean absolute percentage error. Besides, additional sensitivity analysis indicated that D-CRITIC has the tendency to deliver more stable criteria weights and ranks with a larger decision matrix. The research has contributed an alternative objective weighting method to the area of multi-criteria decision-making through a unique extension of distance correlation. This study is also the first to propose the idea of a distance correlation test to compare the performance of different criteria weighting methods.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to analyse theconnection between test results and field claims of ECUs (electronic controlunits) at Scania in order to improve the acceptance criteria and evaluatesoftware testing strategies. The connection is examined through computation ofdifferent measures of dependencies such as the Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’srank correlation and Kendall’s tau. The correlations are computed from testresults in different ECU projects and considered in a predictive model based onlogistic regression. Numerical results indicate a weak connection between testresults and field claims. This is partly due to insufficient number of ECUprojects and the lack of traceability of field claims and test results. Themain conclusion confirms the present software testing strategy. Continuoussoftware release and testing results in a lower field claim and thus a betterproduct.

These funds are a group of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) which are traded worldwide and can adequately represent the performance of the sectors. Through my method, I hope to identify the sector trends in the future by evaluating the sector ETF’s most recent short-term period data. This analysis will provide an alternate investment method for investors to avoid short-term investment risk as well as explanations of why I think the approach may not be valid.

In this thesis, an analysis of Bitcoin, Monero price and volatility is conducted with respect to S&P500 and the VIX index. Moreover using Python, we computed correlation coefficients of nine cryptocurrencies with two different approaches: Pearson and Spearman from July 2016 -July 2018. Moreover the Pearson correlation coefficient was computed for each year from July2016 - July 2017 - July 2018. It has been concluded that in 2016 the correlation between the selected cryptocurrencies was very weak - almost none, but in 2017 the correlation increased and became moderate positive. In 2018, almost all of the cryptocurrencies were highly correlated. For example, from January until July of 2018, the Bitcoin - Monero correlation was 0.86 and Bitcoin - Ethereum was 0.82.

Barnes, Samantha Jones. "Characterization of the Serologic Responses to Plasmodium vivax DBPII Variants Among Inhabitants of Pursat Province, Cambodia." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3970.

Full text
Abstract:
The Plasmodium vivax Duffy Binding Protein (DBP) is the ligand in the major pathway for P. vivax invasion of human reticulocytes, making it an appealing vaccine candidate. Region II of DBP (DBP-RII) is the minimal portion of the ligand that mediates recognition of the Duffy Antigen Receptor for Chemokines (DARC receptor) on the reticulocyte surface and constitutes the primary vaccine target. Analysis of natural variation in the coding sequences of DBP-RII revealed signature evidence for selective pressure driving variation in the residues of the putative receptor-binding site. We hypothesize that anti-DBP immunity in P. vivax infections is strain-specific and hindered by polymorphic residues altering sensitivity to immune antibody inhibition. To comprehend the human IgG response following P. vivax infections we investigated the specificity of IgG in Pursat Province, Western Cambodia. Using ELISAs, we quantified the antibody titer against five variant alleles of DBP-RII. We also sequenced the DBP-RII of the field isolates to determine their relationship to the variant alleles used in the ELISAs. When correlating the IgG titer between the DBP variants a strain-specific immune response was observed in patients with a high antibody titer to DBP-RII_AH as compared to the other variants. This was different from the correlation of high antibody titers between DBP-RII_P and DBP-RII_7.18 (ρ=0.88, p-value<0.0001) and DBP-RII_P and DBP-RII_O (ρ=0.87, p-value<0.0001). There appeared to be little correlation between specific polymorphic residues and IgG titer. Understanding the immune response to the polymorphisms within PvDBP will allow further identification of epitopes to enable the production of a more effective P. vivax vaccine

Ivanovic, Milena. "Exploring the authenticity of the tourist experience in culture heritage tourism in South Africa / Milena Ivanovic." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7606.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question addressed by this dissertation is: How is the tourist experience formed and what constitutes the authenticity of the tourist experience for two market segments (motivated and not motivated by learning) of tourists visiting (political) cultural heritage sites in South Africa. The study explores the correlation between three types of authenticity, namely objective, constructed and existential on two independent tourist samples, motivated and not motivated by learning. This research was initiated for three reasons. The first reason forms part of the research problem; South African cultural experiences received the lowest ratings from the international tourists despite the fact that culture and heritage play a role in reimaging South Africa from Big 5 destination into ‘It’s possible’ and ‘Leave ordinary behind’. It was suspected that not all types of cultural heritage products justify such a low ratings, especially not the political cultural heritage sites South Africa is famous for. The second reason emerged from the academic literature on authenticity theories and calls from the influential group of postmodernist scholars to declare the objective authenticity obsolete and replace it with the existential authenticity. The argument that; the hyperreal nature of the postmodern experience and its detachment from reality makes the authenticity of the site redundant, seemed inapt for cultural heritage sites exclusively dependent on their historical and authentic values. The third reason was the inability of the postmodern paradigm to explain the new tourism phenomenon driven by the tourists search for selfdevelopment through authentic experiences. The new emerging paradigm, transmodernity seemed to offer better theoretical framework in explaining the omnivorouessness of tourists’ consumption and the authentic nature of tourist experiences. The correlational character of the research question required a descriptive correlational design and quantitative methodology. The selected research instrument for primary data collection is a self–administered questionnaire. The sampling strategy is a non–probability sampling, and the sampling method is a convenience or accidental sample. The data was collected from November 2010 to February 2011 at the Constitutional Hill National Heritage Site in Johannesburg. The final sample (436) consists of 254 foreign and 182 domestic tourists. The questionnaire was designed to identify the variables pertinent to each type of authenticity of tourists experience and of the resultant tourist experience. The data analysis provided very interesting results. Firstly, the results of crosstabulation proved that more than half (56%) of the tourists expressed strong agreement that the Constitution Hill provided them with authentic experience, hence a proof that political heritage sites are not responsible for the overall low experiential ratings of the country’s culture and heritage. Secondly, the results of the Spearman’s correlation coefficient proved that objective authenticity as an independent variable have strong positive correlation with constructed and existential authenticity hence a proof that objective authenticity cannot be declared obsolete and replaced with existential authenticity. Finally, the results of the t–test proved that motivation for learning and place of birth do not play an important role in how tourist evaluate and experience the authenticity of the site pointing to the omnivorous nature of tourist consumption. In line with the transmodern paradigm, motivation for learning plays a critical role in triggering the transformative, authentic experience distinctive of the existential authenticity. The results of the study also showed that 32% of tourists are in fact the purposeful, New Age, transmodern Cultural Creatives. Proposed theoretical model of authenticity of tourists experience presents a theoretical platform for future research studies.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with speech analysis of people who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Purpose of this thesis is to obtain statistical sample of speech parameters which helps to determine if examined person is suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Statistical sample is based on hypokinetic dysarthria detection. For speech signal pre-processing DC-offset removal and pre-emphasis are used. The next step is to divide signal into frames. Phonation parameters, MFCC and PLP coefficients are used for characterization of framed speech signal. After parametrization the speech signal can be analyzed by statistical methods. For statistical analysis in this thesis Spearman’s and Pearson’s correlation coefficients, mutual information, Mann-Whitney U test and Student’s t-test are used. The thesis results are the groups of speech parameters for individual long czech vowels which are the best indicator of the difference between healthy person and patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease. These result can be helpful in medical diagnosis of a patient.

The article is a summary of research on the actual and potential integration of environmental insurance and ISO 14001 environmental management systems (EMSs) in Poland. The aim of the research is to analyze the relationship of the above-mentioned instruments of environmental risk management and to identify the factors determining the propensity of enterprises to implement such elements of the system that will increase the usefulness of ISO 14001 standards for insurance purposes in the future. The data for the study were obtained through an asynchronous group interview conducted on the Bulletin Board platform among insurance sector experts and through a survey of organizations that implemented the ISO 14001 system in Poland. Template analysis of qualitative data, supported by narrative techniques and statistical analysis based on the chi-square test of independence, U Mann–Whitney test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient were used to interpret the data. Environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 are not, in their current form, used in the process of providing insurance cover for environmental risk. Organizations managed according to ISO 14001 rarely design and implement solutions useful to insurers. The latter, however, are statistically significantly correlated with the awareness attributes of the organization. Awareness attributes were also strongly related with the variables describing the propensity to implement additional – useful for insurance purposes – EMSs elements. The strongest motivators for the above, however, were of a non-insurance nature (e.g. obtaining tax credit).

Abstract:
Air traffic controllers’ (ATCs) work process can be presented as uninterrupted set of decisions. These decisions occur and are implemented in both clear and stealth forms being influenced a lot. Determined and stochastic risks are especially important in this process. Human factor (HF) effect on flight safety is proven to be better considered through operators’ attitudes toward unsafe acts and conditions. This seamlessly integrates in ICAO safety paradigm. Air traffic controllers’ preferences system (PS) is discussed in regard to typical professional mistakes set. Using paired comparison, normative part of summary hazard and differentiating part of summary hazard, the preferences system of air traffic controllers is received. For the first time, mistakes pair summary hazard is determined on the unique qualimetric 100-point scale. Systems pair has high correlation level according to Spearman coefficient (R = 0.9727). Proposed Kendall rank coefficient outweighs the traditional one twice (Wtraditional = 0.2722, Wproposed = 0.55237). The significance level for all cases is equal to 1%. Multistep procedure of marginal opinions separation is implemented. It increased Kendall rank coefficient value up to Wproposed = 0.7. Survey procedure influenced positively on the ability of mistakes memorization, recognition, and avoidance during simulation training.

Abstract:
Abstract The surface of a real-world turbine blade differs from the geometry of its model. Manufacturing tolerances, wear, and regeneration during the turbine’s lifetime impact the aerodynamic behaviour, stage efficiency, and parameters as previous probabilistic studies have shown. Aerodynamic changes lead to aeroelastic variances in downstream rows that can have a significant impact on high-cycle fatigue due to a possible increase of a blade’s vibration amplitude. The present study expands an existing tool chain to uni-directional aeroelastic full three dimensional simulations. The test object is the last stage of a low-pressure five-stage axial turbine; the geometric variances are applied to characteristic airfoil parameters of the vane by Latin hypercube sampling. A required sample size for an accurate sensitivity analysis is estimated a-priori and verified by computational simulations. The aerodynamic analysis identified the stagger angle, trailing-edge thickness, maximum thickness, and maximum camber as the most important parameters among the characteristic blade parameters. For large deviation in the stagger angle a non-monotonous influence on isentropic efficiency was found, which shows limitations of a sensitivity analysis based on the Spearman rank correlation coefficients. A variance-based sensitivity analysis was used for a more detailed analysis, which is capable to detect such non-monotonous relationships. In the aeroelastic simulations, the chord length, maximum camber, and the trailing-edge angle have the highest influence on aerodynamic forcing and damping on a downstream rotor blade of the changed stator blade. Furthermore, direct correlations between aerodynamic stage parameters and aerodynamic damping are shown, which allows reduced order modelling. The correlation between work coefficient and vibration amplitude was overlooked by the Spearman’s coefficient but identified by the variance-based approach. A maximum vibration amplitude is identified, indicating a potential of using probabilistic studies for adjusting the safety factors for high-cycle fatigue during the design process of blades.

Abstract:
Leukocyte poor platelet concentrates (PC), containing less than 10 leukocytes, prepared from buffycoats can be stored in normal PVC bags for 7 days at 22°C without deterioration of the pH. We assumed that a low number of leukocytes present in the PC, is a critical factor to maintain the pH. To test this hypothesis increasing amounts of leukocytes were added to four groups of three PC with comparable plasma volumes (mean 58.6 ± 0.8 (SD) ml) and platelet concentrations (1.01 ± 0.04×109 /ml). Group I had a leukocyte concentration of 0.14±0.048×106 /ml, group II 1.96±0.09×106 /ml, group III 5.53±0.98×106 /ml, and group IV 13.0±0.93×106 /ml. The PC were stored in normal PVC bags for 7 days at 22°C. Measurements in vitro were performed at day 0, 2, 5 and 7.The initial mean pH value was 7.12±0.02 (SD) for all PC and dropped to 6.89, 6.85, 6.77 and 6.61 for group I to IV respectively, at day 7. A significant correlation (Spearman rank test) between low pH values and high leukocytes was found. The same significant positive correlation was observed between high leukocyte concentrations and high glucose consumption and high lactate production and LDH release during storage. These results show that the amount of leukocytes in PC has a significant contribution to the detrimental effect on pH during platelet storage. It is therefore important to prepare PC with a leukocyte count lower than 10 . Moreover the risk of alloimmunisation against HLA antigens will be diminished.

Abstract:
DIC is a clinical syndrome which is initiated by exces sive thrombin generation, fibrin formation and fibrin deposition in organs, thus resulting in multiple organ failure. It is a frequent, often fatal complication in intensive care patients. We evaluated a recently developed ELISA (Behringwerke) for TAT complexes in 50 healthy volunteers and in 43 consecutive intensive care patients referred by the attending physician on the clinical suspicion of DIC. The ELISA is based upon thrombin-antibody coated test tubes and measurement of bound TAT complexes with peroxidase-conjugated AT III antibody. The method has a detection limit of 0.7 μg TAT/L, a normal range of 0.97-5.4 μg/L, The intra- and inter assay v.c. at 3.3, 11.2 and 42.4 μg/L TAT levels were 5, 7, 8% and 9 , 9 and 12% resp. Patients suspected of DIC were in a clinically septic condition (n=33), confirmed by positive bloodcultures in 18, malignancies (n=5), multiple trauma (n=3) or solutio placentae (n=2). Of the 43 patients 29 had increased TAT levels: mean 21.5, range 5.4-62.5. TAT levels correlated (p <0.05) with concurrently assayed plasma fibrinogen (r=0,543), Factor V (r=0,539), platelet count (r=0,307), AT III (r=0,317), and with plasminogen (r=0,365) (Spearman rank correlation test). The accuracy of the TAT-test for the diagnosis of DIC was assessed in all patients. DIC was assumed if patients fulfilled 3 of the 5 following laboratory criteria, i.e. AT III <0.7 U/ml, factor V <0.6 U/ml, fibrinogen <1.5 g/L, platelet count <100x109/L or a positive fdp/FDP test. The sensitivity and specificity of the TAT-test was 86 and 46% respectively, the positive and negative predictive values were 60 and 77%.

Abstract:
Purpose: Physical activity levels (PA-levels) significantly decline during adolescence, and sport participation during childhood and adolescence is frequently emphasized as protec-tive factors of PA-decline. However, there is a lack of studies which specifically examined sport-related factors and its influence on changes in PA (PA-changes) in adolescence. This study aimed to prospectively observe sport factors as: (i) correlates of PA-levels and (ii) pre-dictors of PA-changes in the period between 16 and 18 years of age among urban adoles-cents from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: The sample of participants comprised 324 adolescents (44% females) who were prospectively observed over two testing waves: (i) baseline, when participants were 16 years old; and (ii) follow-up, 20 months later (18 years of age). The variables were collected by previously validated questionnaires including questions on predictors (sociodemographic variables and various sport factors [current/former/ever participation in individual and team sports, experience in sports, competitive result achieved]), and criteria (PA level obtained at study baseline and follow up, measured by Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents [PAQ-A], and difference between PA-levels at baseline and follow-up). The t-test was used to compare PA-levels. The associations between variables were evidenced by: (i) Spear-man’s rank order correlations (between predictors and PA-levels), and (ii) logistic regression analysis (between predictors, and PA-changes observed as binomial criterion [PA-incline vs. PA-decline] – excluding those participants who reported active sport participation at study baseline). Results: The PA-level significantly declined over the study course (t-test: 6.60, p < 0.01). Sport-related predictors were significantly associated with PA at baseline (Spearman’s R: 0.33–0.45, p < 0.01), and PAat follow-up (Spearman’s R: 0.32-0.45, p < 0.01). Meanwhile, there was no significant correlation between studied predictors and differences in PA-levels between baseline and follow-up. Also, logistic regression did not reveal any significant influ-ence of predictors obtained at study baseline and PA-changes observed as binomial criterion (PA-incline vs PA-decline). Conclusion: While studied sport-related predictors significantly influence the PA-levels in the age of 16 and 18, with the higher level of PA among those adolescents who are actively in-volved in sports, sport-participation do not predict changes in PA-levels over the observed period of life. Knowing the influence of PAon overall health status, future studies should pro-vide additional details on possible predictors of PA-changes in adolescence.

Abstract:
30 Day Hospital Readmission Rates, Frequencies, and Heart Failure Classification for Patients with Heart Failure Background Congestive heart failure (CHF) is the leading cause of mortality, morbidity, and disability worldwide among patients. Both the incidence and the prevalence of heart failure are age dependent and are relatively common in individuals 40 years of age and older. CHF is one of the leading causes of inpatient hospitalization readmission in the United States, with readmission rates remaining above the 20% goal within 30 days. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services imposes a 3% reimbursement penalty for excessive readmissions including those who are readmitted within 30 days from prior hospitalization for heart failure. Hospitals risk losing millions of dollars due to poor performance. A reduction in CHF readmission rates not only improves healthcare system expenditures, but also patients’ mortality, morbidity, and quality of life. Purpose The purpose of this DNP project is to determine the 30-day hospital readmission rates, frequencies, and heart failure classification for patients with heart failure. Specific aims include comparing computed annual re-admission rates with national average, determine the number of multiple 30-day re-admissions, provide descriptive data for demographic variables, and correlate age and heart failure classification with the number of multiple re-admissions. Methods A retrospective chart review was used to collect hospital admission and study data. The setting occurred in an urban hospital in Memphis, TN. The study was reviewed by the UTHSC Internal Review Board and deemed exempt. The electronic medical records were queried from July 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019 for heart failure ICD-10 codes beginning with the prefix 150 and a report was generated. Data was cleaned such that each patient admitted had only one heart failure ICD-10 code. The total number of heart failure admissions was computed and compared to national average. Using age ranges 40-80, the number of patients re-admitted withing 30 days was computed and descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using Microsoft Excel and R. Results A total of 3524 patients were admitted for heart failure within the six-month time frame. Of those, 297 were re-admitted within 30 days for heart failure exacerbation (8.39%). An annual estimate was computed (16.86%), well below the national average (21%). Of those re-admitted within 30 days, 50 were re-admitted on multiple occasions sequentially, ranging from 2-8 re-admissions. The median age was 60 and 60% male. Due to the skewed distribution (most re-admitted twice), nonparametric statistics were used for correlation. While graphic display of charts suggested a trend for most multiple re-admissions due to diastolic dysfunction and least number due to systolic heart failure, there was no statistically significant correlation between age and number or multiple re-admissions (Spearman rank, p = 0.6208) or number of multiple re-admissions and heart failure classification (Kruskal Wallis, p =0.2553).
