Abstract:
AbstractObjective:To compare different statistical methods for assessing the relative validity of a self-administered, 150-item, semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) with 4-day weighed diet records (WR).Design:Subjects completed the Scottish Collaborative Group FFQ and carried out a 4-day WR. Relative agreement between the FFQ and WR for energy-adjusted nutrient intakes was assessed by Pearson and Spearman rank correlation coefficients, the percentages of subjects classified into the same and opposite thirds of intake, and Cohen's weighted kappa.Subjects:Forty-one men, mean age 36 (range 21-56) years, and 40 women, mean age 33 (range 19-58) years, recruited from different locations in Aberdeen, Scotland. Results:Spearman correlation coefficients tended to be lower than Pearson correlation coefficients, and were above 0.5 for 10 of the 27 nutrients in men and 17 of the 27 nutrients in women. For nutrients with Spearman correlation coefficients above 0.5, the percentage of subjects correctly classified into thirds ranged from 39 to 78%, and weighted kappa values ranged from 0.23 to 0.66.Conclusions:Both Spearman correlation coefficients and weighted kappa values are useful in assessing the relative validity of estimates of nutrient intake by FFQs. Spearman correlation coefficients above 0.5, more than 50% of subjects correctly classified and less than 10% of subjects grossly misclassified into thirds, and weighted kappa values above 0.4 are recommended for nutrients of interest in epidemiological studies.

Abstract:
Correlation methods are indispensable in the study of the linear relationship between two variables. However, many researchers often adopt inappropriate correlation methods in the study of linear relationships which usually leads to unreliable results. Recurrently, most researchers ignorantly employ the Pearson method in a dataset that contained outliers, instead of more appropriate correlation methods such as Spearman, Kendall Tau, Median and Quadrant which might be suitable in the calculation of correlation coefficient in the presence of influential outliers. It is noted that the accuracy of estimation of correlation coefficients under outliers has been a long-standing problem for methodological researchers. This is due to low knowledge of correlation methods and their assumptions which have led to inappropriate application of correlation methods in research analysis. Five different methods of estimating correlation coefficients in the presence of influential outlier (contaminated data) were considered: Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Spearman Correlation Coefficient, Kendall Tau Correlation Coefficient, Median Correlation Coefficient and Quadrant Correlation Coefficient.

Abstract:
Comparison of Values of Pearson's and Spearman's Correlation Coefficients on the Same Sets of Data Spearman's rank correlation coefficient is a nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Charles Spearman as a measure of the strength of an association between two variables. It is a measure of a monotone association that is used when the distribution of data makes Pearson's correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading. Spearman's coefficient is not a measure of the linear relationship between two variables, as some "statisticians" declare. It assesses how well an arbitrary monotonic function can describe a relationship between two variables, without making any assumptions about the frequency distribution of the variables. Unlike Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient, it does not require the assumption that the relationship between the variables is linear, nor does it require the variables to be measured on interval scales; it can be used for variables measured at the ordinal level. The idea of the paper is to compare the values of Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient as well as their statistical significance for different sets of data (original - for Pearson's coefficient, and ranked data for Spearman's coefficient) describing regional indices of socio-economic development.

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Vulnerable Elders Survey-13 (VES-13). Interviews were carried out with individuals aged 60 years and over receiving care at an ambulatory cancer centre. Test-retest reliability was assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient, intraclass correlation coefficients and Cohen's kappa coefficient. Construct validity was assessed by testing convergent and discriminant validity using principal component analysis and Varimax rotation. The Spearman correlation coefficient value of the comparison between test and retest scores was 0.98 (p < 0.001). All intraclass correlation coefficient values were higher than 0.60 and kappa coefficients varied between 0.33 and 0.94. Three identified factors explained 72.6% of overall sample variance. VES-13 presented good convergent validity and reasonable discriminant validity. The psychometric properties of the adapted version of the VES-13 are consistent and adequate for use with the Brazilian population.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the level of agreement between children and their parents when reporting a child’s food consumption.DesignCross-sectional study in which children and parents independently completed 7 d food diaries describing the foods and drinks the child consumed at every meal and snack. The association between child and parent reporting was assessed for nineteen food groups using Kendall’s tau-b non-parametric correlations, Spearman’s rank correlations, kappa coefficients and Lin’s concordance measure of agreement. Results were also stratified by gender of the child and his/her grade at school.SettingHouseholds in Ticino, Switzerland, April–June 2014.SubjectsTwo hundred and ninety-nine children aged 6–12 years and one of their parents participated, with 264 providing complete data (35 % completion rate).ResultsResults showed a high level of agreement between child and parent reporting. Spearman correlations ranged from 0·55 (sauces) and 0·57 (fatty meat) to 0·80 (fruit), 0·83 (starchy foods) and 0·84 (pastries). All nineteen Spearman correlations were significant at the 0·001 level. Kendall’s tau-b correlations ranged from 0·44 (fat meat) to 0·81 (puff pastry). Kappa values showed low to high levels of agreement, ranging from 0·15 (sweets) to 0·77 (puff pastry). Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients ranged from 0·39 (whole grains) to 0·86 (puff pastry).ConclusionsWhen assessing the eating behaviour of children using a 7 d food diary, children’s reports might be as reliable as their parents’.

Abstract:
Objectives: Most of the tests regarding parent-child interaction have dealt with this issue from the emotional-behavioral point of view; however, studying these interactions from a combined verbal-behavioral aspect requires a tool consistent with Iranian culture. Parent-Child interaction coding system–3rd edition (DPICS-III, 2009) is allotted to evaluate parent-child interaction. This study was conducted on mothers of 3- to 6-year-old children to translate, adapt to the Persian language, and determine the validity and reliability of the parent section of this test. Methods: This research was descriptive-analytic with a non-experimental design. This test was adapted to the Persian language, and its face validity was examined to clarify the items. Moreover, the correlation between live and video observations of 10 mothers and children was evaluated to determine the validity of observations. Later on, the same rater reviewed the videos of 10 mothers—recorded for the correlation between live and video observations—again within a week for intra-rater reliability and verify the credibility of the rater. Moreover, the Spearman and interclass correlation coefficients were used to determine inter-rater reliability. Data analysis was done by calculating ICC, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and the Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: The translation process led to an appropriate version of the test in Persian language. The Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were used for analysis. The correlation between live observation and video was significant (P<0.05, 1-0.74=spearman and P>0.05, 0.99-0.83=Pearson). The reliability of intra-rater was also high (P<0.05, 1-0.89=spearman and P>0.05, 0.99-0.87=Pearson). Furthermore, inter-rater reliability was also high (P<0.05, 0.99-0.81=spearman and P<0.05, 1-0.79=ICC). Discussion: According to the study results, the parent section of DPICS is applicable in the Persian language with appropriate validity and reliability. This applicable test is either as live observation or video recording, with no differences.

Abstract:
In this thesis, an analysis of Bitcoin, Monero price and volatility is conducted with respect to S&P500 and the VIX index. Moreover using Python, we computed correlation coefficients of nine cryptocurrencies with two different approaches: Pearson and Spearman from July 2016 -July 2018. Moreover the Pearson correlation coefficient was computed for each year from July2016 - July 2017 - July 2018. It has been concluded that in 2016 the correlation between the selected cryptocurrencies was very weak - almost none, but in 2017 the correlation increased and became moderate positive. In 2018, almost all of the cryptocurrencies were highly correlated. For example, from January until July of 2018, the Bitcoin - Monero correlation was 0.86 and Bitcoin - Ethereum was 0.82.

In this honors thesis, I attempted to develop an investment strategy to analyze the U.S. stock market by studying the correlations between nine sectors defined by the Select Sector Standard & Poor’s Depository Receipts (SPDR). These funds are a group of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) which are traded worldwide and can adequately represent the performance of the sectors. Through my method, I hope to identify the sector trends in the future by evaluating the sector ETF’s most recent short-term period data. This analysis will provide an alternate investment method for investors to avoid short-term investment risk as well as explanations of why I think the approach may not be valid.

Ivanovic, Milena. "Exploring the authenticity of the tourist experience in culture heritage tourism in South Africa / Milena Ivanovic." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7606.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question addressed by this dissertation is: How is the tourist experience formed and what constitutes the authenticity of the tourist experience for two market segments (motivated and not motivated by learning) of tourists visiting (political) cultural heritage sites in South Africa. The study explores the correlation between three types of authenticity, namely objective, constructed and existential on two independent tourist samples, motivated and not motivated by learning. This research was initiated for three reasons. The first reason forms part of the research problem; South African cultural experiences received the lowest ratings from the international tourists despite the fact that culture and heritage play a role in reimaging South Africa from Big 5 destination into ‘It’s possible’ and ‘Leave ordinary behind’. It was suspected that not all types of cultural heritage products justify such a low ratings, especially not the political cultural heritage sites South Africa is famous for. The second reason emerged from the academic literature on authenticity theories and calls from the influential group of postmodernist scholars to declare the objective authenticity obsolete and replace it with the existential authenticity. The argument that; the hyperreal nature of the postmodern experience and its detachment from reality makes the authenticity of the site redundant, seemed inapt for cultural heritage sites exclusively dependent on their historical and authentic values. The third reason was the inability of the postmodern paradigm to explain the new tourism phenomenon driven by the tourists search for selfdevelopment through authentic experiences. The new emerging paradigm, transmodernity seemed to offer better theoretical framework in explaining the omnivorouessness of tourists’ consumption and the authentic nature of tourist experiences. The correlational character of the research question required a descriptive correlational design and quantitative methodology. The selected research instrument for primary data collection is a self–administered questionnaire. The sampling strategy is a non–probability sampling, and the sampling method is a convenience or accidental sample. The data was collected from November 2010 to February 2011 at the Constitutional Hill National Heritage Site in Johannesburg. The final sample (436) consists of 254 foreign and 182 domestic tourists. The questionnaire was designed to identify the variables pertinent to each type of authenticity of tourists experience and of the resultant tourist experience. The data analysis provided very interesting results. Firstly, the results of crosstabulation proved that more than half (56%) of the tourists expressed strong agreement that the Constitution Hill provided them with authentic experience, hence a proof that political heritage sites are not responsible for the overall low experiential ratings of the country’s culture and heritage. Secondly, the results of the Spearman’s correlation coefficient proved that objective authenticity as an independent variable have strong positive correlation with constructed and existential authenticity hence a proof that objective authenticity cannot be declared obsolete and replaced with existential authenticity. Finally, the results of the t–test proved that motivation for learning and place of birth do not play an important role in how tourist evaluate and experience the authenticity of the site pointing to the omnivorous nature of tourist consumption. In line with the transmodern paradigm, motivation for learning plays a critical role in triggering the transformative, authentic experience distinctive of the existential authenticity. The results of the study also showed that 32% of tourists are in fact the purposeful, New Age, transmodern Cultural Creatives. Proposed theoretical model of authenticity of tourists experience presents a theoretical platform for future research studies.

This thesis deals with choises of using mathematical statistics when optimising the compression casting process of high-voltage device transformer. There is a theoretical consideration to be found in the introduction which concerns the compression casting itself and all necessary information connected with it. Then there is a key numerical analysis part following. In the first instance there are variability problems of individual casting device discussed and then a regression analysis made to demonstrate and prove a link between the partial discharge and the key parameters of casting process. Finally an “optimal” casting sequence is suggested and alternative attitude problems with the assistance of Design of Experiments (DOE) are discussed.

Abstract:
Trade plays a vitally important role in the provision of livelihoods for farmers and people employed in the spheres connected with the food supply chain. It also contributes to the insurance of food security across the globe and provides greater choice in goods for consumers. The data under analysis are the food, drinks and tobacco (SITC 0+1) exports amounts of Ukraine to the EU and of the EU to China. The timeframe under research is nine years – from 2011 till 2019 included. The purpose of the research is to analyse whether the agricultural products exports of Ukraine to the EU are correlated with the said exports of the EU to China and if they are, how strong the correlation is. The research is conducted using such statistic tools as the univariate analysis, the normality distribution analysis, the comparative analysis, the Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation coefficients, judging by the data scales and distributions. According to the research results, the agricultural products exports of the EU to China are approximately three times bigger than those of Ukraine to the EU. Judging by the calculated Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients of the agricultural products exports from Ukraine to the EU and from the EU to China and their p-values, the H0 hypothesis of zero correlation between the said exports can be rejected.

Abstract:
Abstract The surface of a real-world turbine blade differs from the geometry of its model. Manufacturing tolerances, wear, and regeneration during the turbine’s lifetime impact the aerodynamic behaviour, stage efficiency, and parameters as previous probabilistic studies have shown. Aerodynamic changes lead to aeroelastic variances in downstream rows that can have a significant impact on high-cycle fatigue due to a possible increase of a blade’s vibration amplitude. The present study expands an existing tool chain to uni-directional aeroelastic full three dimensional simulations. The test object is the last stage of a low-pressure five-stage axial turbine; the geometric variances are applied to characteristic airfoil parameters of the vane by Latin hypercube sampling. A required sample size for an accurate sensitivity analysis is estimated a-priori and verified by computational simulations. The aerodynamic analysis identified the stagger angle, trailing-edge thickness, maximum thickness, and maximum camber as the most important parameters among the characteristic blade parameters. For large deviation in the stagger angle a non-monotonous influence on isentropic efficiency was found, which shows limitations of a sensitivity analysis based on the Spearman rank correlation coefficients. A variance-based sensitivity analysis was used for a more detailed analysis, which is capable to detect such non-monotonous relationships. In the aeroelastic simulations, the chord length, maximum camber, and the trailing-edge angle have the highest influence on aerodynamic forcing and damping on a downstream rotor blade of the changed stator blade. Furthermore, direct correlations between aerodynamic stage parameters and aerodynamic damping are shown, which allows reduced order modelling. The correlation between work coefficient and vibration amplitude was overlooked by the Spearman’s coefficient but identified by the variance-based approach. A maximum vibration amplitude is identified, indicating a potential of using probabilistic studies for adjusting the safety factors for high-cycle fatigue during the design process of blades.

Abstract:
Based on appraisal reports, obtained from the City Office of Krakow, there were formulated base of real estate properties on which is situated the building of transformer station or which are intended for such purpose. The base consists of 90 properties located in the administrative boundaries of the city of Krakow. Most of these properties are the plots of very small areas, mainly in the range from 30 to 70 square meters. Based on the completed database, there were conducted a statistical analysis of the relevant market the property. In order to determine the relationship between the attributes and the price of real estate, there were calculated coefficients of the Pearson complete correlation and coefficients of the Spearman correlation. The analysis showed significant differences between quantitative and qualitative correlation coefficients for some variables. In order to improve the consistency of the database, using statistical methods eliminated property turned out. Finally, the analysis considered two bases, numbering respectively 90 and 77 real estates. In the following values, there were defined standardized regression coefficients (scale 9), the partial correlation coefficients for the dependent variable (price) relative to the rest of variables and coefficients of determination. On the basis of calculations and analysis, there have been drawn conclusions on the impact of each attribute on the market prices of these unusual properties.

Abstract:
International trade helps reduce food insecurity by connecting the regions with limited agricultural potential and large populations to the regions with comparative advantages in agriculture. The international trade of agricultural products appeared to be vitally important in times of such challenges of nowadays as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate changes, turbulences on the political scene, etc., which the whole humanity has to face and overcome. The purpose of the article is to assess if the exports of the agricultural products from Ukraine to the EU and from Canada to the EU are correlated and, if they are, how strong the correlation is. The data under analysis are the export amount of goods from the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) groups 0, which comprises food and live animals, and 1, which contains beverages and tobacco. The timeframe under analysis is 10 years – from 2011 to 2020 included. Such simple statistics of the data sets under analysis as mean, standard deviation, sum as well as minimum and maximum values were calculated and compared. The dynamics, yearly changes and general trend lines of the data sets under research were analysed and compared. The general trend lines of the data under analysis were built and the projections for the following two periods were made in the article using the appropriate functions, having chosen from the exponential, linear, logarithmic, polynomial and power ones, taking into consideration the values of R² coefficients. The analyses for the data normality distributions were conducted. The Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients as well as their p-values of the data researched were calculated and analysed. The research itself as well as its results would be interesting and useful for the public administration officials, business people, decision-makers as well as beginners and experienced specialists in data analysis and statistics.

Abstract:
We have studied the influence of activated coagulation on antithrombotic defence mechanisms in vivo. Conventional coagulation variables, platelets (Tcy), plasminogen (Pig), α2-antiplasmin (AP) , protein C (PC), factor VIII C, factor XII and Cl-inhibitor have been measured before and during reversible tissue thromboplastin-induced DIC in the dog. Free thrombin action as derived from fibrinogen (Fbg) decrease has been expressed as integral of active thrombin concentration over time (φ). Protection by heparin H, pentosan polysulfate PPS or dermatan sulfate DS was studied. DIC had no consistent effect on the behaviour of factor XII and Cl-inhibitor, but led to the consumption (Δ) of the following variables:The Spearman correlation coefficients between and φ in the Δ whole group were all statistically significant and ranged from rs=0.51 (ΔPlg) to rs =0.94 (ΔFbg). The response of major defense mechanisms in vivo quantitatively depends on active thrombin.

Abstract:
The global crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic among the population and at the level of companies, state institutions, etc., underlined the importance of analysing its impact at different levels (intern, national and international level). The concepts of sustainability, development and growth must be aware, adapted and implemented more and more frequently, even constantly, in order to cope with the current evolution of the economy (and not only). The paper is an empirical research conducted in the North-East Region of Romania, aiming to analyse the impact of COVID-19 on local companies (especially SME’s), in the context of existing correlation between the COVID-19 impact on resizing, restricting, changing the number of active employees, changing revenue, changing turnover and changing profit, based on the Spearman correlation coefficients. In this sense, it was important to implement sustainability strategies and ensure the activity and resources of companies in the long term, because the effects of an economic crisis (natural resources, human resources, not only financial) are felt in 2021 and will be felt in the future 10 years. The paper concludes with two practical solutions to ensure the sustainability of the companies involved in the study, solutions that can be applied by all companies that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
The paper shows the relation among the number of small, medium and large companies in the leather and footwear industry in Croatia, as well as the relation among the number of their employees by means of the Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficient. The data were collected during 21 years. The warning zone and the risk zone were determined by means of the Statistical Process Control (SPC) for a certain number of small, medium and large companies in the leather and footwear industry in Croatia. Growth models, based on externalities, models based on research and development and the AK models were applied for the analysis of the obtained research results. The paper shows using the correlation coefficients that The relation between the number of large companies and their number of employees is the strongest, i.e. large companies have the best structured work places. The relation between the number of medium companies and the number of their employees is a bit weaker, while there is no relation in small companies. This is best described by growth models based on externalities, in which growth generates the increase in human capital, i.e. the growth of the level of knowledge and skills in the entire economy, but also deductively in companies on microeconomic level. These models also recognize the limit of accumulated knowledge after which growth may be expected. The absence of growth in small companies results from an insufficient level of human capital and failure to reach its limit level which could generate growth. According to Statistical Process Control (SPC), control charts, as well as regression models, it is clear that the most cost-effective investment is the investment into medium companies. The paper demonstrates the disadvantages in small, medium and large companies in the leather and footwear industry in Croatia. Small companies often emerge too quickly and disappear too easily owing to the employment of administrative staff instead of professional production staff. As the models emphasize, companies need to invest into their employees and employ good production staff. Investment and support to the medium companies not only strengthens the companies which have a well-arranged technological process and a good systematization of work places, but this also helps large companies, as there is a strong correlation between the number of medium and large companies.
