Tognon, Alessandro <1970>. "Rudolf Schwarz. La costruzione dello spazio sacro." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/8857/1/tognon_alessandro_tesi.pdf.
Full textThe purpose of this research is to bring out the project range architect Rudolf Schwarz has developed from the end of the XIX century to 1961, while defining his own design theory about liturgical sacred space. He is a man of broad vision, his thought is the emblem of a man living the space of reality, which discreetly pushes himself to the intelligible boundaries. The selected Schwarz’s sixty churches, projects and buildings, can be classified in different “architectural types” : “Basilica” type; “Cruciform” type and “Hall” type. It is necessary to specify that this approach considers the several and complex modification and influences that are present in each project too. With these types that Schwarz names “prototypes”, as formal simplifications that need a typological choice while they are implemented, starting from the 20s, Rudolf Schwarz lays the groundwork for a general modern spatial and collective idea of the liturgical Christian rite celebration. Purpose of the research is understanding how much the architecture and the sacred, the project and the liturgy coincide from an ideological and a formal point of view. Understanding how much the architecture, that is permeated by historically inherited shapes, is independent form the liturgical rite and how much at the same time it can suggest new liturgical possibilities, in a period when modernism and constant improvement of building technologies ensures new construction possibilities but also takes the risk of loss of values of the architectural space and of the relation between the meaning of architecture and its building.

Full textThe excavation of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore allowed us to gain important information on the history of the city of Trento during the Late Antiquity and the process of Christianization. The first church, of the second half of Vth century AD, stands on a previous thermal structure built around the IInd century AD and is characterized by a strong monumental character. The church, with three naves, presented a raised presbytery, decorated (during the first phase) with an opus sectile then replaced in the VIth century by a polychrome mosaic. Were also found major parts of the architectural decoration of late VIIIth century, belonging to this same system, which won't be significantly modified until the completion of the subsequent medieval religious building, much less extensive and with less monumental aspect, characterized by the presence of an extensive cemetery found at north of the church. The third structural phase, organized in two naves, had rich fresco decorations, and was demolished in the Late Renaissance to build the present church.

Full textWhich are the issues posed for the construction of a church in the urban fabric of the third millennium? Which are, currently, the places of worship -more or less visible- capable of attracting the faithful, the inhabitants but also migrants or visitors in transit? What kind of conflicts can the construction of a church, or more generally of a sacred space, create in a neighborhood and which could be the conditions to avoid it?In some cases, places of worship contribute to reinforce the feeling of belonging and/or identity, they are also points of orientation in the cities, which exceeds the scale of their communities, opening up to other confessions, also. They participate in urban life through many events that we can qualify within culture. This paper interrogates the notion of sacred space from the spatial point of view, through the analysis of the churches built in Rome and Paris, after the Great Jubilee, but also from the standpoint of individual and collective representations.Between tradition and future, attractiveness and repulsion, beyond the symbolic dimension (brand) of the sacred building, the thesis places the question of methodological processes that lead to the construction of a space both real and virtual.Final argument, the comparison between the Italian and French experiences can help to identify the differences between the two systems, the issues of a technical and sociological nature,in order to identify the manner in which we can overcome the monofunctional and restrictive use of the worship site,in favor of multi-functional uses, both internal and aggregated, which allow a wider ownership of these spaces,in an era where the churches are, gradually, more and more empty
