The Siberian condition is an exaggerated one with many layers: its history of settlement created unconventional spatial conditions that are emphasized by extreme geography and climate. Observations from a visit describe the urban space as monotonous and depressing, the landscape as an endlessly montaged one, the Siberian habitat as limited and so on. These observations refer to conventional themes from the architectural field as extreme or particular to the Siberian condition. For a deeper reading of this spatial condition, this project deconstructs Siberian space into five elements that, through applying a metaphoric reading of each, explain the exaggerated condition on multiple levels. The five elements are chosen so that together they represent Siberia's geography in a broad spatial sense. Landscape, production of urban space, dwelling, act of demolition and infrastructure are the pure spatial objects and processes that are taken as the constituents that, on multiple scales and by their ideological insert, inform the Siberian condition. With respect to how meaning and space are strongly connected, deconstructing Siberian space into these elements requires the deconstruction of the ideologies that stand behind them. Thus, a conventional theme is paired with a theoretical theme: within this theoretical framework an interpretation of each object or process is allowed that reveals its ideological insert, historic context and actual condition. These interpretations are generated by both text and graphics supporting each other. Collected materials are used from field research such as interviews and photographs as well as academic research. This thesis uses the power of a visual anthropology to go beyond a formal description of a place: a method that collages the Siberian geography. Through commenting on existing trends and making the aggregated systems of operation legible, a dialogue for negotiating the post-Soviet urban condition in Siberia is offered.

Review of current literature indicates the minimum requirements of the instruction are insufficient. Methods of improvements are discussed. Using the Systems Development Life Cycle as a framework, three methods of implementing CD-ROM technology are proposed. Management concerns are addressed, specifically, resistance to change when implementing a new technology. An economic analysis is also included. Commanding Officers of surface ships are surveyed to determine the extent of CD usage on ships, the types of training involved with their usage, concerns over the systems and the desire to participate in a pilot program should one be funded.

This thesis explores new ways to communicate sensor data by combining spatialized sonification with data visualiation in a 3D virtual environment. A system for sonifying a space using spatialized recorded audio streams is designed, implemented, and integrated into an existing 3D graphical interface. Exploration of both real-time and archived data is enabled. In particular, algorithms for obfuscating audio to protect privacy, and for time-compressing audio to allow for exploration on diverse time scales are implemented. Synthesized data sonification in this context is also explored.

Full textFission gases (Xe, Kr) produced during irradiation in a nuclear fuel can contribute to significant effects such as swelling and fission gas release which may affect the overall performance of the fuel. The effective diffusion theory, which is generally used in the modelling of base-irradiation of nuclear fuel, cannot predict the intra-granular fission gas release during post-irradiation annealing tests. From the several scenarios proposed, we discuss and analyze three such mechanisms: the directed movement of pressurized intra-granular gas bubbles in a vacancy concentration gradient towards the grain surface, the Brownian movement of these intra-granular bubbles via volume and surface diffusion mechanisms, a scenario of gas bubble movement along with the dislocations via the mechanism of dislocation climb. A new spatially resolved model, BEEP Model, has been developed for gas bubble migration and its interaction with point defects. Analyses done using the BEEP model show that neither of the directed or random movement, nor their combination, could explain the large fission gas release obtained during post-irradiation annealing in our reference experiment. The dislocation climb mechanism has been demonstrated as a prominent gas release mechanism, however, the values for diffusion of vacancies on the dislocations are not known and were chosen to allow gas release. The work carried out in this thesis has provided a better insight to the transport of intra-granular gas bubbles and its impact on fission gas release. This work also emphasized the questions that need to be answered at the lower scales

Full textThis thesis, studying the social relationships linked to hunting, is contributing to a sociology of the lifestyles that shows how social relationships are linked to space, and how social classes are built through interactions. The first part recounts the constitution of the different hunting worlds on a national level, using historical and socio-demographical perspectives. Special attention is laid on the transformation of the conditions of hunting due to recent evolution of the rural and periurban spaces. The second and third parts are mainly based upon the analysis of data, which were collected using ethnographical methods on two contrasted spaces: the Germanois (Côte-d'Or) and around Bellifontain (Seine-et-Marne). On each field, different hunting groups have been observed: district (“commune”) shooting groups, private shooting groups, hunting with hounds crews. The members of these groups belong to different classes and fractions of these classes. This thesis studies the differentiated ways they cope with what is nowadays at stake in their activity, essentially the deterioration of the image of hunting and the “environmentalization” of their practices. The analysis focuses then on how some of them, representing different social classes and fractions of classes, organize and involve themselves into hunting. It allows to present the meanings of their commitment in keeping with their lifestyles

Full textSoil is a highly heterogeneous environment in which many processes interact to provide ecosystem services. Model coupling approaches propose to define such system by using a modular architecture in which various processes, represented by models, communicate to reproduce different aspects of a phenomenon such as soil functioning. In this thesis project, we develop such an approach for the purpose of modelling soil functioning. The challenges of such a scheme lie in solving representation problems of soil processes. These representation problems originate from the fact that models from various disciplines are reused to describe the processes. By representations problems, we mean model description which can be (individual or equation based), the temporal execution settings and data resolution. These coupling constraints are addressed by a number of approaches in the literature. All of them propose satisfactory solutions to these constraints in their respective application fields. In our approach, we use the agent paradigm to encapsulate the various soil processes. Then processes will communicate through the space by using resources inside it. The behaviour of the processes then depends on the availability of resources. A coordination problem can arise from this type of coupling, as processes may consume the resource simultaneously while the resource may not support this demand. To overcome that matter, we use an action-theoretic technique called Influence-Reaction to define strategies to manage this type of situation. We used algorithms suggested by the abbundant litterature to manage any processes temporality issues. This coupling approach was applied to a model of organic matter decomposition in which several processes (earthworms, microbes and roots) compete for soil ressources. The results suggest that the use of our approach is suitable for modelling soil functioning, but also gives more accurate indications of resource availability
Vignolles, Benjamin. "Three empirical essays on spatialiazed housing policies." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0153.
Full textThis thesis evaluates the local effects of several spatialized housing policies. It is composed of three chapters, each focusing on a specific French public policy. The two first chapters apply public policy evaluation method in a quasi-experimental framework to study the impact of two spatialized housing policies – the Solidarité et Renouvellement Urbain (SRU) law, aiming to stimulate housing construction, and the Scellier Tax Credit (STC), which is a subsidy to private housing supply for law and intermediate income households - on housing construction, housing markets and spatial income segregation ; the third chapter uses microsimulation methods to assess the income profile of a French housing tax called taxe d’habitation, and how it would evolve if its fiscal basis – aiming to translate housing values of taxed dwellings at 1970 market prices – were actualized. These papers use exhaustive data set produced by the French fiscal administration and notaries, which were not extensively used until now. The first two papers exploit spatial or municipality size discontinuities according to the enforcement of considered public policies. We show that fiscal local incentives are efficient to increase the construction of public housing or of private housing targeted on low-income households. We also show that the additional construction of social housing leads to a reduction of income segregation and housing prices in targeted municipalities. The STC triggered the construction of new dwelling that remain more often vacant and leads to housing prices increases in treated areas, due to crowding-out effect capitalized in land prices. Finally, we show that if the TH fiscal basis were revised in order to reflect actual housing market prices, the income profile of the tax weight in households income would be dramatically modified, from a bell-shaped one attaining its maximum for median income levels to a more regularly increasing one

Full textIn the field of computerized tools dedicated to architectural design, the effects of BIM on the drawings used by architects to represent their architectural projects raise questions. We are particularly studying the effect of BIM software on sketch drawing and ideation tasks in the early stages of creative design. Now standard, CAD-BIM software is based on a modeling principle that overturns the tradition of architecture representation. Would they lead to the latent exclusion of drawing practices? Are they suitable for creative design? By proposing a critique of BIM modeling for its too consensual and adialectic character for the projectual approach, we question the supposed antinomy between CAD-BIM and sketch drawing. We form the hypothesis of a possible "bimable" modality of sketch drawing. In her study entitled The Dialectics of sketching, Gabriela Goldschmidt (1991) revealed the reflexivity of the dialectic working in sketch drawing, described as an alternation between points of view - see As and see That, translating the actions of conjecturing and analyzing by graphic and linguistic means. We tried to observe this dialectic of the sketch by adapting this method to evaluate and reproduce transitions "by hand" and compare them to three computerized modalities, in computerized drawing and BIM, the last being spatialized drawing in virtual reality (VR) using a headset. Called "DialecBIM", this method of evaluating dialecticism from one sketch modality to another has produced interesting results and could be extended to other modalities. As expected, the computerized drawing and BIM modalities have a lower level of dialectic compared to the Hand, which is the reference. The surprising scores obtained by the RV mode and spatialized sketch drawing are close to those of the Hand despite the required learning and constraints (vertical station, visual fatigue, manual controller imprecision). The VR modality has particularly useful qualities for creative design based on a 3D model, BIM or other, and can be improved. Our work also leads us to discuss the method of evaluating dialecticism: the criterion of point of view changes, commutability, appearing consolidable compared to the more "robust" criterion of the quantity of arguments. Are we right to want to measure architectural qualities such as dialectic? We argue that this is useful to resist the performative, optimizing trends of BIM modeling that threaten the creative part of the architectural field

Full textSince 2006, cessation of dewatering in Lorraine Coal Basin (France) led to the flooding of abandoned mines, resulting in a new hydrodynamical balance in the area. Recent researches concerning geothermal exploitation of flooded reservoirs raised new questions, which we propose to answer. Our work aimed to understand the thermo-hydrodynamical behaviour of mine water in a flooding or flooded system. Firstly, we synthetized the geographical, geological and hydrogeological contexts of the Lorraine Coal Basin, and we chose a specific area for our studies. Secondly, temperature and electric conductivity log profiles were measured in old pits of the Lorraine Coal Basin, giving a better understanding of the water behaviour at a deep mineshaft scale. We were able to build a thermo-hydrodynamical model and simulate water behaviour at this scale. Flow regime stability is also studied. Thirdly, a hydrodynamical spatialized meshed model was realized to study the hydrodynamical behaviour of a mine reservoir as a whole. Observed water-table rise was correctly reproduced : moreover, the model can be used in a predictive way after the flooding. Several tools were tested, improved or developed to ease the study of flooded reservoirs, as three-dimensional upscaling of hydraulic conductivities and a coupled spatialized meshed model with a pipe network

Full textThe heavy downpours that have struck Malmö has put climate adaptive planning higher up on the agenda. The neoliberal currents have simultaneously made cities more entrepreneurial where a lot of focus has been put on city branding in the hope of increasing the tax base. Climate adaptive planning has in turn been integrated in this method. The characteristics of climate adaptive planning are frequently described as solely positive for all where social and health values have been combined with ecological values. On the other hand, research has shown that green implementations can expedite gentrification processes and segregation patterns by increasing attractiveness whereas economic access intensifies. Malmö’s development project södra Hyllie is planned with motives of creating a record green environment. As this project is neighbouring areas of lesser economic means in a city with large class divides, we acknowledged an insufficient attention to aspects of socio-spatial justice. In this study, we therefore analysed the city of Malmö’s central planning documents and interviewed one planning officer, one landscape architect and the team leader of Hyllie in order to gain a deeper understanding, regarding the role of socio-spatiality in climate adaptive planning. The results showed that access was mainly regarded as physical access rather than mental access and that attractivity is largely used as the main tool for approaching socio-spatial challenges. We established that climate adaptive planning is conducted in several cases to form and influence socio-spatial conditions but that their positive effects for everyone is assumed. Therefore, our notion is that socio-spatial justice must be made a greater part of climate adaptive planning in order to obtain a more just distribution and access in regard to its positive effects.

Full textThis thesis studies the theatre and its transformations in the socio-political context of Tehran between 2009 and 2019 through the question of spatiality (Lussault, 2007). This period is characterized, on the one hand, by the blossoming of new performance spaces of various architectural, urban and institutional natures throughout the city and, on the other hand, by the appearance of new forms of appropriation of urban spaces for theatrical purposes by artists and spectators. To question these mutations, this study analyses the three case studies – representative of private theatre, off stage theatre and underground theatre - from a theoretical approach that combines social production of space and social construction of space (Low, 2017). In doing so, the present thesis demonstrates that beyond the aesthetic and dramaturgical dimensions, the evolution of the theatre scene in Tehran results from a more significant change in the urban spatiality of the theatre. This materializes, on the one hand, in the transformation of the spatial organization of the theatre within the urban context and, on the other hand, in the ways in which the social and political relations and dynamics of the city are spatialized in the theatre. As a result of this double process, and in the tense and changing socio-political conjunctures of Tehran in 2010s, the theatre space, hitherto an almost compartmentalized space excluded from the public sphere, is manifesting itself as a new public space. Not only it becomes the political field where different political and social forces meet (Balme,2014), it also turns into one of the principal elements in the power dynamics among them. Its production as an architectural and urban entity, its occupation, its appropriation and even its social, symbolic and discursive characteristics and boundaries are then the object of struggles, debates, negotiations and interventions - among the most tense and even virulent ones that the Iranian capital has experienced in the last decade - on the part of the three main forces :the authoritarian and ideological power in place, the economic and financial operators and the citizens, in this case artists and spectators. On the one hand, the dominant political, ideological and financial forces are establishing the privatization of theatre, which is conceptualized here as a spatial strategy. (De Certeau, 1990). They regulate theatre space, its production and use through multiple processes of political, ideological and economic exclusion, homogenization and domination. On the other hand, citizens deploy tactics (De Certeau) that is, new forms of appropriation of space within the breaches, inconsistencies and interstices of the dominant strategy. As a result, urban spaces produced, regulated and monitored for political, ideological or even capitalist purposes immediately become the fields for new forms of artists and spectators’ agencies. Sometimes these forms take the form of acts of resistance, struggle, contestation (the Underground theatre), sometimes of negotiation, compromise (the private theatres) or even circumvention and counter-experiences (the Off Stage theatre). However, whatever the form and consequences of these interactions, they open up breaches and fractures in the political, ideological and economic order that dominates the city and its space. They thus make possible the emergence and survival of forms of otherness in the public sphere and the public space.

Full textReducing environmental exposure inequalities has become a major focus of public health efforts in France, as evidenced by the French action plans for health and the environment. The aim of this thesis is to develop an integrated approach to characterize environmental inequalities and evaluate the spatialized exposure to PAH in France. The data produced as part of the monitoring quality networks of environmental media reflect the actual contamination of the environment and the overall exposure of the populations. However they do not always provide an adequate spatial resolution to characterize environmental exposures as they are usually not assembled for this specific purpose. Statistical methods are employed to process input databases (environmental concentrations in water, air and soil) in the objective of characterizing the exposure. A multimedia model interfaced with a GIS, allows the integration of environmental variables in order to yield exposure doses related to ingestion of food, water and soil as well as atmospheric contaminants' inhalation. The methodology was applied to three Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon substances, (benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene), in France. The results obtained, allowed to map exposure indicators and to identify areas of overexposure and characterize environmental determinants. In the context of exposure characterization, the direct spatialization of available data from environmental measurement datasets poses a certain number of methodological questions which lead to uncertainties related to the sampling and the spatial and temporal representativeness of data. These could be reduced by acquiring additional data or by constructing predictive variables for the spatial and temporal phenomena considered.Data processing algorithms and calculation of exposure carried out in this work, will be integrated in the French coordinated integrated environment and health platform-PLAINE in order to be applied on other pollutants and prioritize preventative actions

Full textThe importance of the groundwater of the alsace plain and the important role which it represents from an economic and environmental standpoint, caused the development of several research programs concerning protection of the water resource against the pollution of agrarian or industrial origin. In this context, it was thus interesting to undertake a regional study to concretely evaluate the refill of the groundwater by the rains and to appreciate the effect of the conditions of surface on the transfer of meteoric water towards the aquifer. In this context, it appeared essential to conduct scientific work making it possible to tackle these questions on the basis of better knowledge of the hydrous functioning of the system soil-vegetation-atmosphere. We develop an approach based on an in situ experimentation, followed by a spatialized modeling, applied to a zone between strasbourg and colmar (1700 km2). The step used is more conceptual than those which were followed hither to for the study of the refill of the groundwater by precipitation. The three models were validated to respect to two variables at least. A second validation was carried out by inter comparison of the results of three models. A cartography of the physical soil characteristics (texture classification, useful reserve in particular) was carried out by digitalization of the maps of the arable lands. The cartography of the farming occupation was carried out starting from image processing of american satellite landstat-tm with high resolution. The model used for spatialization was modified so as to carry out the water balance calculation in each node of a regular grid on the entire studies zone. The procedure makes it possible to calculate, in each node of the grid (according to a variable unit of space), the subsoil drain (clear refill), as well as the aet. It provides moreover all the terms of the assessment of energy as well as the temperature in the soil at depths of 0. 1 m, 0. 5 m and 1 m of deep. Analysis of simulating results with 100m and 1km meshes resolution have allowed quantification of groundwater recharge and displayed a strong spatial variability of thesis on the studies area

Full textIn France, emergency rescue for victims is an integral part of the fire brigade missions. This is what we called the secours à personne (SAP). These last years, the number of volunteer firemen is in decline, particularly in the peri-urban and rural areas, which is not without consequence on the coverage of operational resources, especially since these sectors are already experiencing a decline in medical demography. At the same time, the number of SAP type of interventions is increasing. In this context, tensions between supply and demand for SAP tend to increase. One of the solutions envisaged to solve this situation is to optimize the location of existing resources. However, the methods implemented to this, by professionals, don’t prove to be sufficiently integrated, and those developed by researchers, not sufficiently operational. The main objective of this research is to propose an optimization method for localized SAP resources, both integrated and operational. The choice fell on the location-allocation models, because they take into account, overall, the set of parameters that come into play in the location of the emergency, and the consequences chain as location choices can result. The approach consists of three steps. The first is to make a diagnosis of SAP. The second is to select and prepare input data and configure the model. The third is to carry out various great scenarios optimization possible. This approach allowed, on one hand, to highlight the needs and methods of operational optimization tools, and on the other hand, to demonstrate the interest of the location-allocation models as an aid to reflection for optimizing localization of SAP resources

Full textThis work explores the dead body as it is represented in a number of contemporary Latin American cuentos in order to establish a typology of the different reactions of human beings in general when faced with death. I suggest that literature reproduces a limited number of universal behaviours in this situation and thus it gives readers a fairly reliable inventory of the attitudes that they, like the characters, are likely to adopt. The corpse as a protagonist of the short stories discussed here has been selected because it is the only concrete and palpable image of death and that, by its repulsive appearance, it represents a terrible source of fear which conditions and alters any intention of peacefully trying to come to terms with it. The theoretical framework of the literary possible worlds whereby fiction is seen as a potential experience, and the formal characteristics of the cuento, such as its reduced, self-contained nature, allow the text to be read as a funerary space where all these fictional dead bodies lie. The reader is thus brought into close contact to the dying/dead, cold, putrid, stinking, dismembered or embalmed body and the literary experiences he/she goes through help him/her to come to grips with the frightening reality of death

Being a practicer of artistic creations, I focus on digging the nature of the creation, and referring to sequence of ideas about images in the current trend while making my artistic creation statement. Through scanning what I have done, along the way of my tracks, it became a systematic language to present my pieces. Hopefully I can maintain certain openness and use it to be the model of my works, as well as accomplishment of the goal of writing. In this thesis, I will bring out two important ideas in my art works: one is the secretive spaces, the other one is so called image-archaeology in the space, in which we may learn that why the concepts of spaces and images are repeatedly shown in my works. Roughly speaking, the secretive spaces is opposite to the spaces could generally be seen. With this idea, I found a cleft to nail and address the unseen spaces and recreate a narrative image to reverse the way of observing places. As for the image-archaeology, it could be regarded with two parts, destroying and digging; which mainly discusses the reason that why I choose those places to shoot , also specify its relationships in my works. In short, the whole thesis, I will try to describe and analyze the turning point of my way to look on the images, especially in my practices, also the selection of spaces, the events in the images, and the layout of the devices in my recent works along with its each chapter.

Full textThe immersive sound experience is often associated with sound spatialization. But the immersive phenomenon is rather complex and reducing it to the sole usage of a technical device does a disservice to our appreciation of its multiple causes in terms of a work’s reception. This memoir presents a research-creation project, entitled Cathédrales, that aims to better understand the reception of an intentionally immersive 3Dspatialized acousmatic music. This work focuses on the adopted compositional strategies and their effects, with regard to initial intentions and the analysis of comments made by listener participants. The first three chapters present the concepts underlying the creative process for the works Ville Aux Cent Clochers ("City of a hundred bell towers") and Réverbérence ("Reverberence"). The first chapter clarifies the meaning of sound immersion from the outset, from its more general understanding to its more specific meanings; the second chapter then presents immersion under the scope of a natural narratology of music; while the third chapter integrates such narrative approach within the language of a "cinema for the ear", while adapting it to the multidirectional context of the sound diffusion medium. In the fourth chapter are presented the two parts composing Cathédrales ("Cathedrals") : I. Ville Aux Cent Clochers and II. Réverbérence. After introducing the concept of the work as a whole, the intentions and strategies that are more specific to each part of the work are then exposed. Finally, the fifth chapter presents the results of two case studies on the reception behaviors of multiple participants listening to spatialized music over a loudspeakers dome. Aesthesic analysis arising from these surveys allows to provide different conceptual categories of the immersive sound experience. Such categorization may eventually serve to schematize the effects of certain compositional strategies, in combination with the usage of a particular technological device, on the reception of 3D spatialized music.
