Abstract:
This book documents the proceedings of the ‘23rd Symposium on Environmental Law’ held on 22nd and 23rd March 2018 in Leipzig, which addressed the current interdisciplinary issues relating to environmental law, while focusing on the areas of legal protection and environmental testing. Consequently, these conference proceedings deal with the developments related to Germany’s Environmental Appeals Act. They consider the coordination of environmental impact assessments with environmental law studies from a legal perspective and highlight legal protection measures against spatial development plans and procedural errors. Finally, they contain contributions on supplementary procedures and on both the demands and reality of strategic environmental testing. As a result, this book will appeal to all those interested or involved in issues relating to the legal protection and environmental assessments stipulated by environmental law and planning regulations and who would like to learn more about new, practice-related developments in this field. Abstract:
Digitalisation is creating new challenges and opportunities for the world of work and labour policy. The contributions in this volume discuss key developments in this field and labour policy strategies for dealing with the digitalisation of work: the shifting of spatial and temporal boundaries in the organisation of work, new initiatives of interest representation to regulate work, organise employees and mobilise workers in transnational contexts, and, finally, the prospects of shaping the design of work in digital working worlds. The book emphasises that the challenges of regulating and shaping work in digital contexts and the opportunities to do so are intertwined with other trends. With contributions by Alexander Bendel, Anja Gerlmaier, Thomas Haipeter, Fabian Hoose, Jennifer Kaczynska, Angelika Kümmerling, Erich Latniak, Sophie Rosenbohm and Christine Üyük.

Jones, Sarah Rees. Public and Private Space and Gender in Medieval Europe. Edited by Judith Bennett and Ruth Karras. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199582174.013.023.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay explores ideas and practices of gender in public and private space in medieval Europe. It considers elite and religious men and women as well as the spaces used by lower-status people, and draws on historical records, literature, and archaeology. From the early Middle Ages, space was planned in order to reinforce social hierarchies, but normative rules about gendered spatial conduct also soon became commonplace. Such rules varied over time and from place to place and were often contradicted by popular behavior. Nevertheless ideals did affect vernacular architecture and the use of space by people of most social classes. Above all attitudes towards space were conditioned by religion. Radical changes in the use of domestic and street spaces often followed radical religious change. Within Christian communities the central cultural focus for the gendered regulation of space was the desire to purify material production, particularly the reproduction of children.

Whitehead, Mark, Rhys Jones, and Martin Jones. The Nature of the State. Oxford University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199271894.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The twin categories of the state and nature collectively embody some of the most fundamental reference points around which our lives and thinking are organized. Despite their combined significance, however, the complex relationships that exist between modern states and nature remain under-theorized and are relatively unexplored. Through a detailed study of different sites, moments, and framing strategies The Nature of the State challenges the ways in which geographers and social scientists approach the study of state-nature relations. The authors analyse different instances of state-nature interaction from all over the world, considering the geo-politics of resource conflicts, the operation of natural history museums, the organizational practices of environmental departments and ministries, the regulation of genetic science, and contemporary forms of state intervention within issues of climate change. Introducing original research into the different institutional, spatial, and temporal strategies used by states to frame the natural world this book provides a critical overview of the latest political and ecological theories and addresses a wide range of pressing socio-environmental debates.

Schotte, Simone, Michael Danquah, Robert Darko Osei, and Kunal Sen. The labour market impact of COVID-19 lockdowns: Evidence from Ghana. 27th ed. UNU-WIDER, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2021/965-5.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we provide causal evidence of the impact of stringent lockdown policies on labour market outcomes at both the extensive and intensive margins, using Ghana as a case study. We take advantage of a specific policy setting, in which strict stay-at-home orders were issued and enforced in two spatially delimited areas, bringing Ghana’s major metropolitan centres to a standstill, while in the rest of the country less stringent regulations were in place. Using a difference-in-differences design, we find that the three-week lockdown had a large and significant immediate negative impact on employment in the treated districts, particularly among workers in informal self-employment. While the gap in employment between the treated and control districts had narrowed four months after the lockdown was lifted, we detect a persistent nationwide impact on labour market outcomes, jeopardizing particularly the livelihoods of small business owners mainly operating in the informal economy.
