Abstract:
The line between hardware and software is shrinking. While programmers and developers desperately try to reach the required performance for applications that require huge computations, they will be forced to use multiprocessing. Not only using a CPU as a main computation unit, but other resources like GPU. In these theses we will review the current situation in multiprocessing using GPU‘s. An investigation of computation of physics will be carried out. While analyzing current products and applying technologies for GPU computation using OpenCL we will execute appropriate experiments. These experiments will show the up and down sides of GPU computing for specific physics tasks.

Abstract:
Today, not only women care about skin care but also men. In addition to this new trend, you can see the rise in preference in products of natural origin that contribute to providing benefits to the skin and reducing the damage caused by chemicals. In this sense, a potential market has been found, men specifically for the sophisticated lifestyle, a part of the population, defined by Arellano Marketing, as concerned about status, fashion and image. Based on the image, it is known that currently the market for men's cosmetic products has been growing for some years, having generated up to S / 1,000 million in 2018. That is why "Spartan Man Care" seeks to address the business of natural products specialized in men who care about their physical appearance. Furthermore, it is important to note that today despite the potential market for men, there is no variety of products for them, so there is a latent business opportunity to work. Currently, the total of men considered sophisticated in Lima within the range of 25 to 39 years is 121, 392. Of this total, 14% purchase hygiene products regularly, represented by 16,995 inhabitants and S / 3,976,830 in soles. Finally, it was determined that the project's profit, calculated through the NPV, will be S / 126, 316 of return on investment.

Full text
Abstract:
Mothers of Sparta is a collection of thirteen personal essays that examine place—knowing one’s place, and finding one’s place in the world. The narrative arc chronicles the narrator’s childhood, young adulthood, marriage and child rearing years, ultimately encompassing the difficulties of raising a child who, due to brain damage, faces an uncertain future. As the narrator grows older, place shifts from a concrete knowledge of the physical world around her, to learning her place within gendered and regional social constructs, and defining her place through roles such as wife, mother, student and writer. These essays are diverse in style. Woven throughout is a theme of violence, weighted with visceral language: the violence of accident and death, the violence that occurs in nature and in domestic spaces, and the violence that often goes unnoticed because we live in a violent world.

Krohn, Jørgen, and Jørgen Linnerud. "MPEG Transcoder for Xilinx Spartan." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-8896.

Full text
Abstract:

In this project the focus has been on developing an MPEG transcoder that can be used as a demonstration module for the AHEAD system, Ambient Hardware: Embedded Architecture on Demand. AHEAD is a collaboration project between NTNU and SINTEF in Trondheim that is aiming to develop a method of doing run-time reconfiguration of hardware. The AHEAD system will in the future use an FPGA in a tag that is able to reconfigure itself with hardware description that it receives from a hand-held device, e.g. a PDA, or downloads from the Internet. The tag will then be able to be operating as a co-processor for hand-held devices in the vicinity of the tag. Consequently, since the hand-held devices avoid doing some of the heavy processing of the video stream, the power consumption in the hand-held device will be decreased. The MPEG transcoder in this report consists of two parts, an MPEG-4 decoder and an MPEG-2 encoder, that are connected and form a complete transcoder. The MPEG-4 decoder was designed in software in the pre-project to this Master thesis and was in this Master thesis designed in hardware. The MPEG-2 encoder was partially designed by the former students Rognerud and Rustad, but was not working as required and had to be modified to a large extent. In this project the MPEG-4 decoder has been designed from scratch, and the MPEG-2 encoder has been modified in such a way that it operates as specified in the MPEG-2 standard. The first part that was designed was the MPEG-4 decoder. This was due to the experience on that part from the pre-project and that it is the first part of the transcoder. Also, it was useful to produce input data to the encoder. Secondly, the MPEG-2 encoder was modified to operate as required. However, the amount of time spent on finding the errors and resolve them in this part was larger than assumed in the beginning of the project. There was found a way to downscale the resolution of a video in the frequency domain and thus, the Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform, IDCT, and Discrete Cosine Transform, DCT, modules were not needed in the design of the MPEG transcoder. However, the resolution scaler has not been designed in this project, but should be a part of the MPEG transcoder in the future. This should be done to further decrease the power consumption in the hand-held device. In other words, the resolution scaler would be a very important module of the MPEG transcoder and should be implemented in the future MPEG transcoder to make it more beneficial for use in the AHEAD system. During testing and verification, both the MPEG-4 decoder and the MPEG-2 encoder were found to be functioning as specified by the MPEG standards. A video was decoded from MPEG-4, transcoded to MPEG-2 and recognized as an MPEG-2 video that could be displayed in several media players showing good video quality. The results from the synthesis show that the complete MPEG transcoder would use 84% of the available resources on the FPGA that is available for experimental purposes in this project. Also, it shows that the designed MPEG transcoder could operate on a clock frequency of 54 MHz. This results in an MPEG transcoder that is capable of transcoding videos of at least full DVD quality, 720 x 576 pixels, at run-time, which is thought to be sufficient for most cases in AHEAD. Additionally, the transcoder would for most cases be able to transcode HD video of 1280 x 720 resolution, however this is depending on the degree of compression and the nature of the incoming MPEG-4 video. It is concluded in this Master thesis that it has been designed, tested and verified an MPEG transcoder that transcodes MPEG-4 video to MPEG-2 video. The MPEG transcoder is capable of handling at least DVD quality video, which should be sufficient for most cases in AHEAD. There has not been focused on incorporating the transcoded video in a transport stream at run-time in this project. However it is recommended to do so in a future transcoder system and the interface of the MPEG transcoder in this project has been described to make this easier. Also, an article explaining a method for doing resolution scaling in the frequency domain has been proposed. It has further been concluded that the MPEG transcoder designed in this project is a huge step toward having an MPEG transcoding system that can operate in the future AHEAD system. Additionally, it has been experienced that reusing other designers modules sometimes can be less convenient since the increased amount of time spent on debugging can exceed the extra time spent on designing it from scratch. This is because the self designed modules tend to be easier to debug.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, I hope to do a small part to bridge the gap that has emerged in this scholarly debate between the historicist and Straussian views of Spartan society. To that end, this paper will analyze the Spartan Constitution according to the Straussian method. That is, I will engage in a close reading of the text, only referencing outside, secondary sources directly when necessary and appropriate. In other cases, their views will simply color this analysis and be referenced as supporting evidence in footnotes. Strauss chose to have only a superficial interaction with the existing scholarship at the time of publishing his essay, and I therefore believe it will be more beneficial to see what this approach would look like from the historicist perspective. When the same approach is taken, the heart of both camps’ arguments will be exposed, allowing them to be more easily compared. The paper will begin with a reading exploring the themes of Xenophon’s work according to a historicist perspective. After a brief aside explaining and motivating the Straussian esoteric argument to a greater extent, the paper will move on to a similar close-reading of the Spartan Constitution, following Strauss’ essay where appropriate and extending his arguments where necessary. Through this process, the paper aims to show that the perceived separation between the historicist and Straussian interpretations appears to be much greater than it, in reality, is.

Heydon, Kendell A. "Constructions of Spartan masculinity in Classical Athenian prose." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/52181/.

Full text
Abstract:
Employing a methodological approach informed by sociological social constructionist theories of gender, I endeavour to explore representations of Spartan masculinity in the works of Xenophon Thucydides and Plato, to gain better understanding of portrayals and usages of ideologies of Spartan masculinity in Classical Athenian philosophical and historical works. I structure my project by focusing on seven categories which constructionists believe to be important to the formation of masculinity. My aim is to demonstrate the utility of this methodological framework for exploring historical masculinities and to contend that there is no singular representation of Spartan masculinity within Classical Athenian prose. Rather, representations of Spartan masculinity are complex and multifaceted, with authors constructing and employing different ideologies of Spartan masculinity situationally and for a variety of purposes, both internal and external to the texts. In chapter one, I examine Xenophon’s Spartan Constitution, demonstrating the role of masculine ideals in the “Lycurgan” system and suggesting Xenophon depicts Spartan masculinity as highly competitive and performative in nature. In chapter two, I examine Plato’s Laws and Republic, to demonstrate that Plato portrays Spartan masculine ideals as playing a prominent role in the imbalanced development of Spartan character. I also analyse Plato’s depiction of the auxiliary guardians to suggest that problematic elements he associates with Spartan men are unresolved, even within his idealised polis. In chapter three, I explore Thucydides’ History. I elucidate the role of masculine ideals in characterisations of Spartan individuals and the Spartan polis and argue that characters’ redefinition of Spartan masculine ideals is portrayed as politically useful in the text. Finally, in chapter four, I examine Xenophon’s historical works, focusing primarily on the Hellenica. I explore a number of episodes to demonstrate characters’ employment of masculine ideals for political purposes, to demonstrate correspondences between masculine ideals identified in the Lac. and Xenophon’s characterisations of Spartan individuals in the Hellenica and argue that hegemonic masculinity is observable in depictions of of Spartan societal processes and mechanisms.

Scarpato, Andrea. "Spartan foreign policy in the third century BC." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/42487.

Full text
Abstract:
Spartan foreign policy in the third century BC is a neglected topic of Spartan history. This work explores this issue and argues for Spartan proactive participation in the interstate interactions of the third century BC. In doing so, it explains the reasons which drove Sparta to interact with other states and the extent of such interaction. It demonstrates that decision-making power was distributed between particular Spartan individuals and institutions, and that the changing distribution of power across these networks (to include ephors, gerousia, and kings) had a crucial impact on the articulation of foreign (military and diplomatic expeditions) and domestic (appointment of the Spartan kings) political decisions. As shown in this work, in the formulation of Spartan foreign policy, important efforts to avoid conflict without recourse to warfare and the presence of cooperation and interstate dialogue, facilitated by tools such as kinship ties and embassies, were central. These were utilised by the Spartan governing bodies to facilitate interactions with smaller (Taras, some Cretan poleis) and larger (Achaean League, Macedonia, Egypt, Rome) Mediterranean states. In adopting its foreign policy, Sparta could cultivate relations with these states and was highly regarded on the international stage. In interstate interactions, certain Spartan individuals were paramount: they were deployed by the Spartan governing bodies (gerousia, ephors) or could act by themselves in important military and diplomatic expeditions. By articulating a proactive foreign policy, Sparta could exercise influence on many locales situated inside and outside the Peloponnese and could even compete for hegemony with superpowers of the century such as Macedonia and Rome. In addressing these issues, it will be shown that the third century was a period characterised by a remarkable Spartan continuity of interest in certain locales inside and outside the Peloponnese.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate and describe the differences between the fifth-century city states of Athens and Sparta. The approach I use is that of altérité (“otherness”). I look in particular at four of the most important social phenomena: women, slaves, the army and the political structures. In these respects there are extensive differences between the two city states: Athens acquired its slaves through buying them or as spoils of war over time and on an individual basis; Sparta conquered and enslaved a whole nation, the Messenians, early on to serve permanently as their slaves. Athenian women enjoyed no social or legal freedom or rights; Spartan women enjoyed all these rights and could own and inherit property and goods. In Athens, since the time of Themistocles the fleet was regarded as much more important than the infantry; Sparta had very early on developed a professional infantry which was regarded as the best right through the Greek-speaking world. Athens started changing its constitution at a relatively late stage, but once started, continued to work on it until they attained an early form of democracy; Sparta never developed beyond the monarchical stage, but did adapt it to suit their needs. The second purpose of this study is to discover and attempt to explain why the above-mentioned differences are so great. The point here is not so much that Athens was the model city state which everybody tried to emulate, but rather that Sparta was the city state which was significantly different from any of the others.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The emergence of low cost airlines (LCAs) has attracted attention from passengers, competitors, the public, and researchers alike. It seems prodigious that LCAs prosper in today's time of economic downturn and are therefore able to counter the industry's trend. lATA's member airlines have accumulated losses of $31 billion since the beginning of the new millennium. Furthermore, industry icons such as American Airlines and British Airways are fighting for survival while some, namely Air Canada, are on the edge of bankruptcy: a fate which others, like Sabena, have not been able to escape. However, the low cost business model has triumphantly entered the aviation market since the deregulation of the markets in the U.S. in 1978. Low cost airlines like Southwest Airlines and Ryanair not only achieve double-digit profit margins, but also have the highest market capitalisation of the industry. This thesis examines the reason for the success of LCAs in the U.S. and EU. LCAs operate with a much lower cost base than most carriers, especially the major hut-and-spoke (H&S) airlines. The low cost business model aims at increasing both aircraft and staff productivity. It also simplifies the sequence of operations workflow and pricing structure. The thesis gives special consideration to the cost structure of LCAs. The advantages of LCAs lie within the areas such as labour, seat density, and distribution. The second objective of this thesis is to evaluate the development of LCAs and consider the implications for the European transport industry. Whereas American LCAs have operated for more than twenty-five years, the boom of their European counterparts did not commence until the end of the 1990s. Ryanair and easyJet have growth rates of more than thirty percent. The author agrees with the expectations of aviation experts that LCAs will grow until they serve approximately a quarter of the market; hence, the business model of low cost is sustainable. However, only three to four low cost airlines will survive the fierce competition in Europe.

Hadley, Travis Stuart. "Thucydides’ Sparta: Law, Piety, and the Regime." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699880/.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation investigates Thucydides’ presentation of Sparta. By viewing the war through Sparta, one is confronted with debates on the moral dimensions of war. Sparta decries the imperialism of Athens as unjust and while the Athenians imply that such claims are merely Spartan ‘hypocrisy’ and therefore that Sparta does not truly take justice seriously, my study contends that the Spartan concern with justice and piety is genuine. While the Athenians present a sophisticated and enlightened view of what they believe guides all political actions (a view most scholars treat as Thucydides’ own) my study argues that Sparta raises problems for key arguments of the ‘Athenian thesis.’ Through a closer study of Thucydides’ Sparta, including his neglected Book 5, I locate details of both Sparta’s prosecution of the war and their regime that must be considered before agreeing with the apparent sobriety and clear-sightedness of the Athenians, thus leading the reader into the heart of Thucydides’ view of morality in both foreign affairs and domestic politics. A portion of this research is currently being prepared as an article-length study on the broad and important issue of hypocrisy in foreign affairs among states.

Abstract:
This thesis explores those processes which led to the creation and definition of social groups among the inhabitants of what was later to become the territory of Classical Lakonia. Its chronological focus is the early period of Spartan state formation (ca. 1200-600 BC, and especially the latter part of this period from 800-600 BC), and emphasis is placed on cult and ritual practice, especially the material record of sanctuaries. Emphasis on the sanctuary record reflects the fact that the extant evidence in the case of Lakonia comes almost exclusively from sanctuaries where one would expect people to make statements about themselves and their community[ies]. The aim is to define the theoretical framework built around the formation and function of the Spartan state in its early stages- a framework delimited by existing theoretical discussions of the different social groups within Lakonia. The relationship between this framework and the way/s in which the extant archaeological evidence has been a assessed to date will then be assessed critically. Both the framework and the material evidence are examined in their own terms. Rather than using established historical notions to interpret the existing literary and archaeological evidence, these notion are themselves tested against the existing data, both literary and archaeological.

This dissertation is a comparative study of the relationship between the sanctuaries and cults of Artemis in Lakonian and Messenia, after the liberation of Messenia from Lakonia (370 BCE). Four hypotheses are explored in order to answer the central question of whether the sanctuaries and cults of Artemis in Messenia after the liberation were mimeses of those in Lakonia: essential religious similarity from the fourth century onwards, post-liberation Messenian revival of pre-conquest religious practices, conscious Messenian determination of religious difference from Lakonia and independent evolution of Messenian sanctuaries and cults of Artemis. From literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic evidence as well as observations made during personal visits to sites and museums in Greece, relevant data on the physical and historical landscape, This dissertation is a comparative study of the relationship between the sanctuaries and cults of Artemis in Lakonia and Messenia, after the liberation of Messenia from Lakonia (370 BCE). From literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic evidence as well as observations made during personal visits to sites and museums in Greece, relevant data on the physical and historical landscape, epicleseis, sanctuary components, relevant myths and cult practices of all Artemisia in the southern Peloponnese are assembled into two comprehensive catalogues, one for each polity. A synthesis and analysis of that data is then conducted to establish patterns for purposes of comparison. The emergent patterns demonstrate that sanctuaries and cults of Artemis in post-liberation Messene are not essentially Lakonian mimeses. This study advances our collective understanding of sanctuaries and cults of Artemis in Lakonia and Messenia. It points to unknowns which could provide fertile avenues for future research into the complexity and diversity of ancient Greek religion in the Peloponnese.

Pavlides, Nicolette A. "Hero-cult in Archaic and Classical Sparta : a study of local religion." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/14212.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the hero-cults in Sparta in the Archaic and Classical periods on the basis of the archaeological and literary sources. The aim is to explore the local idiosyncrasies of a pan-Hellenic phenomenon, which itself can help us understand the place and function of heroes in Greek religion. Although it has long been noted that hero-cult was especially popular in Sparta, there is little known about the cults, both in terms of material evidence and the historical context for their popularity. The first, second and third chapters query the origin and development of herocults and challenge the traditional assumption that Helen, Menelaos and Hyakinthos were 'faded gods‘. They also question the Dorian Spartan adaptation of Achaian heroes for political propaganda. Instead, the evidence at the Menelaion and the worship of Agamemnon and Alexandra/Kassandra, Orestes and others who remain anonymous to us, are viewed as a local phenomenon reflective of the developing communal and social consciousness in Archaic and Classical Sparta. The fourth chapter deals with the heroisation of the recently dead in the context of the possible posthumous heroisation of the Spartan kings and other important communal personalities. Thus, hero-cults are explained and interpreted as a changing phenomenon, which are influenced and shaped by societal dynamics at any given time. It is concluded that in Sparta the boundaries of the divine/heroic/mortal were fluid, which allowed a great variation in the expression of cults. The fifth and sixth chapters study the more intimate relationship of the individual to the hero through a survey of the votive deposits dedicated to heroes and an iconographical analysis of the votives, such as the stone and terracotta reliefs. The study of the archaeological record permits an analysis of the kinds of offerings to hero cults and an evaluation of the architecture that housed such cults. Because of the material and spatial distribution of the votive deposits, I conclude that Sparta had a large number of hero shrines scattered throughout the polis which attests to an enthusiastic and long-lasting local votive practice at a popular level.

Abstract:
What happens when we look at others, and when others look at us? How does the experience of looking at or being seen by others shape our perceptions of ourselves? This thesis addresses these questions with reference to a specific historical and cultural moment; I examine scenes of vision and display in the Athenian writer Xenophon's representations of Spartans, Persians and other non-Greek peoples in Asia as a means of investigating the place of Sparta, Persia and the non-Greek in fourth century Athenian thought. Focusing in particular on the Anabasis, Cyropaedia, Lakedaimonion Politeia and Agesilaus, I analyse the representation of the responses of spectators to foreign sights in order to consider how these texts position their readers in relation to Spartans, Persians and others, and also, therefore, how they articulate and interrogate what it means to be Athenian, and what it means to be Greek. I will argue that sight is involved in the construction of Greek identity; that although some of the ways in which Greek identity is represented imply its cohesion, more often Xenophon's scenes of vision reveal the uncertainties and manipulations involved in attempting to imagine or lay claim to Greekness; and that Xenophon reveals the complexities of Panhellenist thought and of the intellectual and political climate of the fourth century. This thesis contributes towards a history of Greek identity and a history of visuality; it also seeks to reappraise Xenophon as a writer, revealing him as a valuable source for Greek conceptions of political power and conflict, and of ethnic, political and cultural selfconsciousness.

At Saab Dynamics AB there are a number of projects where cameras are an important part of a sensor system. Examples of such projects are monitoring for civil security and 3D mapping, where several cameras are used. The cameras can for example be located in airplanes, helicopters or cars and therefore it is important to have a robust function for recording data. One way to achieve a quick recording with sufficient storage size is to use SATA flash disks. To reduce the size and power consumption of the recording equipment and to enable project-specific adaptations it is desirable to use an FPGA as an interface to SATA devices. This thesis concerns the development of such an interface implemented on an FPGA. The theory behind the SATA interconnect standard is described along with the design work and its challenges.

Abstract:
This study explores how Classical Athens and Sparta created the warrior citizen and continued to motivate citizens to fight throughout their lives. It engages with the issues of the 'hoplite ideal', exploring the extent to which it existed in practice and the implications of hoplite ideology for other types of warrior. This study also considers various methods of training and proliferation of state ideology, both formal modes of training such as the Spartan agoge and also informal modes of training such as hunting. Modern sociological and psychological evidence regarding military training and the fostering of aggression are also considered. The important role of religious beliefs and mythology are examined with both the role of gods in battle (for example, in pre-battle sacrifices) and also the depiction of gods and heroes as military figures are considered as potential motivating factors. The potential for inter-state rivalries as played out during Panhellenic festivals and as displayed in Panhellenic sanctuaries is also explored as a motivating factor for individuals and for the state as a whole.

Abstract:
Can we consider Plutarch's Parallel Lives a historical work? Can we read them as a unitary series? These are the initial questions that this thesis poses and that are investigated in the Introduction, five main Chapters, and the Conclusion. In the Introduction, a preliminary status quaestionis about ancient biography is presented before clarifying the methodology adopted for reading the Parallel Lives as a unitary historical work and the reasons for choosing the Lives of Lycurgus, Lysander, and Agesilaus as the case studies to examine in detail. Chapter 1 discusses the historiographical principles that emerge from the De sera numinis vindicta: for Plutarch history is primarily the history of individuals and cities, based on the interpretation of historical events. Chapter 2 tries to verify the hypothesis that the Parallel Lives correspond to the historical project delineated in the De sera numinis vindicta. This Chapter, moreover, reassesses the literary form of the Parallel Lives by employing the concepts of 'open macrotext' and 'cross-complementarity' between the Lives. Chapter 3 analyses the Life of Lycurgus, focusing on the formation of the cultural identity and the political model of Sparta. In the Life of Lycurgus, Plutarch indicates already the intrinsic weaknesses of Sparta and the probable causes of Spartan decline in the fourth century BC. Chapter 4 is devoted to the Life of Lysander, where Plutarch narrates how after the Peloponnesian War Sparta established its hegemony over the Greeks and, simultaneously, began its rapid moral and political decline into decadence. Plutarch also seems to suggest that in this historical period of extraordinary changes not only Sparta and Lysander but all the Greeks were guilty of distorting moral values. Chapter 5 concentrates on Agesilaus, who could have led Sparta and the Greeks to great success against the Persians, but, instead, had to save Sparta from complete destruction after the Battle of Leuctra. The Conclusion recapitulates the main points of the thesis and proposes possible arguments for future research on Plutarch’s Parallel Lives.

Rodger, Calum. "From Stonypath to Little Sparta : navigating the work of Ian Hamilton Finlay." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6442/.

Full text
Abstract:
The work of Ian Hamilton Finlay spans a fifty-year career, numerous media (many invented by Finlay himself) and thousands of years of Western history. Yet despite its range, it is the product of a singular artistic vision. The object of this thesis is to provide a philosophical and aesthetic framework through which Finlay’s work can be read comprehensively. Centred on the notion of the ‘non-secular’ – a term coined by Finlay in response to bureaucratic, social and artistic antagonisms – it proposes that Finlay’s entire body of work can be read as a project towards realisation of ‘non-secular’ awareness. This comprises, firstly, a longing for an ‘essential’ language and absolute truths, and a respect and reverence for those aspects of culture which strove to, if not discover, then construct and have faith in those truths. It also comprises, secondly and as a consequence, reconciliation with the fact that these absolutes can never be fully realised in the practice of everyday living. This prompts further reconciliation with the limits of our comprehension of the universe and, in the last analysis, our own mortality. This reconciliation is ‘non-secular’ insofar as it does not dispel, but rather emphasises, the notion of a ‘beyond’ inherent to these limits, without defining that ‘beyond’. Using the metaphor of a navigator’s compass, the thesis defines the borders of the ‘non-secular’ through study of Finlay’s work, his correspondence, and his relationship with his contemporaries and critics. It gathers together, develops and responds to previous criticism on Finlay in order to present a unified reading of the poet’s oeuvre which, though it cannot hope to cover every aspect, suggests how his work might best be approached, navigated and read. To this end, the thesis also draws from a number of philosophers working in the continental, hermeneutic tradition, who present ways of thinking the ‘non-secular’ which complement Finlay’s project and, in some cases, directly influence it. As the title would suggest, though the thesis explores Finlay’s work in all media, its locus is Stonypath/Little Sparta, the poet’s family home and magnum opus. Here, the tensions between life and art which give rise to the ‘non-secular’ are at their most palpable. Despite Finlay’s reputation as a visual and plastic artist, this thesis opens with the premise that his work is best approached as poetry, beginning with an extended Introduction which shows how Stonypath/Little Sparta develops from modernist poetry. Coining and defining the term ‘topographical poetics’ to describe Finlay’s site-specific works, it then constructs a formal and methodological approach for reading these ‘poems’. Preliminary discussion of the ‘non-secular’ follows, leading into a four-chapter structure concerned with sketching out the limits of the ‘non-secular compass’. The compass consists of four poles – the Poetic, the Homely, the Modern and the Classical – corresponding to Chapters One through Four respectively. Each pole serves as an absolute point by which to consider the idea of the ‘non-secular’. The exception is the Homely, a pragmatic anchor from which develops the ‘non-secular’ in its reconciliatory aspect and, ultimately, provides the unique foundation for Finlay’s work. This ‘non-secular compass’ is presented as a critical paradigm for reading Finlay. With the work itself, it may also be used as an interpretative tool which opens up to fresh and vital reflections on our comparatively ‘secularised’ existences.

Abstract:
Starting from researching musical documents, most of them unpublished, at the “Mazzinian Archive Institute” in Genoa, my doctoral research will focus on a new, modern and innovative way to digitize music scores. My research is ideally divided into three phases: ▪  Archive research ▪  Examination and evaluation of the possibilities of digitizing ▪  Making a sound archive (“playing the archive”) The first step is completed, with a preliminary digitization of the unpublished scores stored in the archive. About the second phase, I would study and collect information from the academic field, and I was able to establish a dialogue with the National Archival System (SAN) to formalize a digital schedule which is compatible with the ministerial standards and usable on dedicated platforms (music archives http://musica.san.beniculturali.it/). The third and last step will be the realization of the sound archive, through the collaboration with the informatics department (Università degli Studi di Genova). This type of digitization generates a new way of using the scores themselves, which can go out of the purely musical scope to be included in the field of study at large, for example: cultural studies, media studies and anthropological field. In this paper I intend to present some case studies regarding sheet music and their use in a multidisciplinary way by researchers. This will open a new way of thinking and using the archive, and can be an opportunity to export the study of musical materials in other and complex fields.

Nenci, Nicola. "Taking Apollo by the horns : reconsidering the cult(s) of Apollo Karneios in the Mediterranean." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25966.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines Apollo Karneios’ cult(s) in its religious, festive, and political aspects, and investigates the deity’s role in civic and ethnic identities: one of the most striking features of the cult of this deity is the evidence for its presence in many Dorian communities throughout the Mediterranean, particularly in Sparta, where Apollo Karneios’ cult was of central significance. My research endeavours to clarify the cult’s use in political relations between ancient Sparta and its colonies, and interrogates the evidence to determine where and when the cult originated; how we can recognise the deity in visual material; if Karneios was a Spartan god, or if he ‘belonged’ to all Dorians; and the role of his cult in the foundation of Spartan colonies, such as Thera and Cyrene. This work begins with a review of how previous scholarship addressed those issues raised above, and continues with an analysis of the iconography of the deity, combining literary sources with autopsy of the material evidence, which includes sculpted stelai, archaeological sites and monuments, and most numerous of all, inscriptions. Organising the evidence according to geographical areas, my work progresses comparing and contrasting the manifestation and character of the cult in various locations. In addition, my new readings of literary and epigraphical sources, combined with first-hand study of archaeological evidence, result in new reconstructions of monuments related to Karneios’ cult, and offers a new interpretation of Spartan civic and religious topography. As a last step, my research argues that although the cult displays regional variations to reflect local identities, the many similarities established a Dorian network around the Mediterranean, which changed over time. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the formation and modifications of local identities and political relations among the Dorian poleis of the Mediterranean, highlighting the role of religion, and, in particular of Apollo Karneios in this complex historical process.

Disharmony in the Constitution: Aristotle and Plato on the Education of Women and the Spartan Regime by Brenna R. Strauss Dissertation Advisor: Robert C. Bartlett ABSTRACT In their critiques of Sparta in the Politics and the Laws, Aristotle and Plato write that, where women are poorly regulated, the city cannot be happy. Using Sparta as a case study, I argue that Aristotle and Plato agree on crucial points regarding the education and regulation of women in a well-ordered regime. Such a regime recognizes the importance of the expression of love of one's own through stable, private families as well as the erotic character of human nature. Stable families require that men be assured of their paternity and therefore that women not mix freely in public. Because women will therefore have different roles than men, women and girls will not receive an education equal to that of men or boys, or one as consistent with the aim of the regime. As a result, most regimes will be characterized by tension between the public and private spheres, as was the case in Sparta. The erotic character of human beings exacerbates this tension. Men's immoderate desire generally gives women authority over men, undermining the legislator's attempts to educate and regulate women and men alike. Even in the well-ordered regime, most human beings will not be able to attain a moderate disposition, but will merely achieve self-restraint supported by law and custom. Although there is no indication that women are incapable of human excellence, their inferior education will make them less capable of prudence or philosophy. The domestic role and inferior character of women in the well-ordered regime are due, I conclude, to an attempt to reconcile our individual, mortal natures and our need to live together in political community. The consequent disharmony in the constitution reflects the inherent tension between these two aspects of human nature

Abstract:
The studies on Classical Sparta have made significant progress in recent decades, including in the sense of analyzing the effect that historiographical constructions of its contemporary authors have on the way we view it today. However, a recurring characterization of the Spartans has not received the proper attention so far I refer, more specifically, to the description of the Spartan collective as philótimos, \"lover of honor.\" The purpose of this dissertation is precisely to question this characterization, revealing, in the Spartan social system (that observable through the sources), a historical background for this or to identify the reasons why it is described likewise from the fourth century BC onwards. This is done here through a comprehensive analysis of the influence that not only honour, but also all other elements related to it (shame, reputation, dishonour, etc.) had in the social system of fourth century Sparta, from the conceiving to the death of a Spartan. It has been found that, on the one hand, what we know about the Spartan social system indicates that honor and the crave for it were tools used to maintain an unequal status quo (something functional only when associated with a meritocratic façade), but on the other hand the description of the Spartans as philótimoi served specific political goals of the fourth century BC, specifically as a criticism of Spartan hegemony and as a justification for its dismantling. These conclusions, as well as their basing arguments, serve not only to understand a specific discursive tactic of the fourth century BC, but also the pitfalls of the honor system, specially how its meritocratic form uses the individual\'s social value (i.e. honor) to maintain a specific group in the monopoly of certain privileges, this with the full acceptance of the excluded individuals. This system existed in Classical Sparta, with the same discourse often resurrected in several contemporary contexts.
