Although Spanish is a relatively unified language, in the sense that people from very distant locations manage to understand each other well, there are several phonetic phenomena that distinguish geographically separated varieties. The total number of native speakers of Spanish is above 400 million, and roughly 10% of them live in Argentina (Instituto Cervantes 2014). The accent described below corresponds to formal Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires, and the main allophones are indicated by parentheses in the Consonant Table. The recordings are from a 49-year-old college-educated male speaker, who has lived all his life in either the city of Buenos Aires or the province of Buenos Aires.

Abstract:
In this article we will analyze contemporary newspaper reports as well as criminological and sociological studies concerned with the life of the underworld in Buenos Aires, Argentina from the 1870s to the early 1900s will be analyzed to assess the association of lunfardo with the speech of the criminal as well as the imperfect Spanish spoken by Italian immigrants, and their influence in the development of Argentine Spanish. Linguistic contact, as a significant phenomenon, results in linguistic interferences. Language contact is the result of extra-linguistic phenomena such as cultural, economic, and political relations, as well as the cultural coexistence of mixed populations. The goal of this paper is to communicate language interferences, which can be defined as the transfer of elements from one language to another through changes in lexis, grammar, phonology, or orthography. Social communities, no matter their names, have not existed in isolation throughout history, but have established contacts of the most diverse nature with one another, resulting in mutual influences on various levels of social life. Language, as a social expression, bears witness to intercultural relations. This includes not only relations between official languages, or "main" culture carrier languages, but also relations between official languages and minority languages on a state's territory. These are different civilizations' communication media that end up evolving collaterally. Language interference is the transfer of elements from one language into another at various linguistic levels. Linguistic interferences, for example, are related to foreign aspects such as intonation, pitch, accent, and speech sounds from the first language influencing the second.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the stylistic and linguistic resources used in three songs of musician Max Perlman, written in Argentina in the 20th century. The main focus is code mixing: Yiddish, Castidish, Spanish, and Argentine slang. A close examination of these pieces led to several findings: the use of linguistic and discursive elements like rhyme, mixing language, Jewish traditional names, and references to Jewish life in the local milieu, are facts that can be understood as a continuity of a tradition of artistic production influenced by Yiddish’s contact with other contextual languages. Perlman’s language shift and references to cultural activities emphasize moral criticism about aspects of the daily life of middle and lower class Jews in Buenos Aires in that moment of transition. The incorporation of Spanish into an immigrant’s Yiddish repertoire demonstrates multilingual language competences that were an important resource for his audience’s empowerment within and outside Yiddish theater.

Abstract:
This article attempts to provide a general approach to the exceptional language contact situation that took place in Argentina from the end of the 19thcentury until the first decades of the 20thcentury, in which an enormous immigration flow drastically modified the sociolinguistic landscape. This was most evident in urban environments—and among them especially the Buenos Aires area—and led the local ruling elites to set up a complex and massive apparatus for the nationalisation of the newcomers, which included a language shift in the first stage. Given that the majority of immigrants came from Italy, the most widespread form of contact was that between the local varieties of Spanish and the Italian dialects spoken by the immigrants, which led to the creation of a contact variety called Cocoliche that arose, lived then perished. Although this contact variety did not survive the early years, at least not as a full-fledged variety, the history of its emergence and the ways in which it can be studied today nevertheless make it an object of special interest for research perspectives oriented around the question of the early years of language contact. This article gives an account of this history so as to provide an analysis of a series of documents that, in a highly mediated way, can be used as an unreliable but nonetheless interesting corpus for the study of language and culture contact.

Students have been found to improve their sociolinguistic competence, particularly regarding the acquisition of dialectal features, while studying abroad. Nevertheless, most of the research on learner development of morphosyntactic features in Spanish-speaking immersion contexts has examined that of variants characteristic of Peninsular Spanish in Spain, namely clitics and the informal second-person plural vosotros. Since the informal second-person singular, vos, is more prevalent than its equivalent, tú, in several Latin American countries, learner acquisition of this feature also merits investigation. This article explores second-language learner production of vos among 23 English speakers during a 5-month semester in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a popular study abroad destination. The findings from the multivariate analysis of over 1200 tokens of tú and vos indicate that learners used vos verb forms over 70% of the time by the end of the sojourn. Factors including social networks, proficiency level, mood, and task significantly influenced this use. Most notably, the stronger the learners’ social networks, the more they used vos verb forms and learners with high proficiency levels used these forms more than lower-proficiency learners. This study provides one of the first accounts of the acquisition of a widespread morphosyntactic feature of Latin American Spanish.

Abstract:
In this article I reenact the transitional nature defining the antifascist movement during the 1930s and 1940s, and I do so by using as the scenario for my reflections the novel Contra viento y marea (1941) by the Spanish writer María Teresa León. This novel was launched by the principal publishing imprint of the largest antifascist association in Argentina soon after the arrival in Buenos Aires of its author. Considering the fluid nature of a political movement whose orientations took shape according to the historical evolution and the geographical location of the struggle against fascism, Contra viento y marea illuminates new convergences and divergences in the refraction of this movement across Hispanic cartographies. The novel, written by a communist card-carrier, diverges from the author’s political position during the Spanish Civil War and from the Soviet-encouraged literary model, Socialist Realism. Despite this heterodoxy, the text received attention from Argentinian antifascism, which was dominated at that time by local communism and interested in the testimonial value of a work authored by an intellectual who played a prominent role in the fight against Spanish fascism.

Theoretical and descriptive work on Spanish phonetics and phonology has been largely based on Peninsular varieties. This study uses electropalatography (EPG) to investigate articulatory characteristics of coronal consonant contrasts in Argentine and Cuban Spanish. Simultaneous EPG and acoustic data were collected from five speakers from Buenos Aires (Argentina) and three speakers from Havana (Cuba) reading sentences with various syllable-initial coronal consonants corresponding to the orthographic 〈t, ch, n, ñ, s, z, ll, y, l, r〉. As a control, the same data were collected from a single speaker of Peninsular Spanish from Madrid. As expected, the main distinction in both varieties was made between anterior and posterior coronal consonants ((denti-)alveolars vs. (alveolo-)palatals) and reflected the historical merger of the sounds represented by 〈s–z〉 and 〈ll–y〉. At the same time, the results revealed some consistent differences between the two varieties in the location of the constriction and the amount of linguopalatal contact for most coronal consonants. First, the coronal consonants produced by the Argentine speakers were overall considerably more fronted and more constricted than the corresponding consonants produced by the Cuban speakers. Second, 〈ll, y〉 were produced as a fronted alveolo-palatal fricative by the Argentine speakers, and as an approximant by the Cuban speakers. Inter-speaker variation was observed within the varieties in the articulation of some consonants, namely in the Argentine alveolo-palatal fricative and nasal (〈ll, y〉 and 〈ñ〉), and the Cuban alveolo-palatal affricate 〈ch〉.

Abstract Linguistic landscapes are useful tools to decipher language ideologies that regulate public spaces in society, helping us to decode the semiotic messages that those landscapes transmit. Urban spaces also reveal social practices that organize people’s lives and unveil social discourses that legitimize, approve, erode, or eliminate different linguistic varieties that struggle to survive. This article examines the use of (mock) Lunfardo, a Spanish urban variety spoken in the Rio de la Plata area, Argentina, in a sign posted by the Buenos Aires’ city authorities and the impact this sign had on social media. The results of the analysis show that appealing to Lunfardo as a symbol of identity failed to establish a conversation between parties within a separated, fractured society.

At a time when the concept of auteur cinema is being deeply questioned, the cinematographic work of Spanish director Javier Rebollo (1969-) can be understood as a sample of formal characteristics and experimental narratives leading to a reaffirmation of director as an auteur. In Rebollo’s third film, El muerto y ser feliz (The Dead Man and Being Happy) (2012), Santos, a dying hitman, goes on a journey from Buenos Aires to Northern Argentina that progressively acquires a symbolic meaning, as it is a journey from civilization to nature, from life to death, and, ultimately, from history to myth. The physical decline of Santos and his overcoming of physical death–and of linear time–through his transformation in myth, is parallel to a deconstruction of traditional cinematic language in the movie. Through a meta-reflective articulation of the road movie genre and through the distancing effect caused by the existence of two narrators who, competing with each other, simultaneously construct and deconstruct Santos’ story with their ironic and polysemic words, Rebollo attempts to reaffirm his position as a director-auteur, as the sole creator of an auteur myth (“mito de autor”) versus the traditional myth, oral and collective by nature.

This is a first approach to the application of virtual reconstruction techniques of a colonial house. In Argentina it is still uncommon to perform 3D modeling of archaeological sites and especially in historical archeology. As a first step, we used the Google SketchUp to model the country house located on the banks of the Río de la Plata (Buenos Aires). It has historical significance because it belonged to a Spanish councilman, housed hundreds of slaves and was the place where stayed the troops that carried out the Second British Invasion of Buenos Aires. In this case, the 3D modeling was useful for evaluating the future excavationa and activities of preservation of cultural heritage.

Abstract This investigation examines the use of the pretérito and imperfecto forms in Puerto Rican and Buenos Aires Spanish. These dialects were chosen because the pretérito can express a perfect event in Buenos Aires Spanish while this use has not been documented in Puerto Rican Spanish. This may cause differences in the use of these forms. The main goal of this investigation was to contrast the linguistic predictors in both dialects in order to determine if there are dialectal differences and if they are due to different grammaticalization pathways. The results indicate that there are some differences between the Spanish spoken by Puerto Ricans and that of the Argentines of Buenos Aires. Among the results, it was found that these two dialects had different predictors for the pretérito and imperfecto. These results show preliminary evidence that indicates that these dialects follow different grammaticalization paths.

In this contribution, we present the results of a representative perception study that was carried out to determine how the verbal periphrase hube de + inf. is understood in Cuban and Argentinian Spanish and whether the Galician avertive lead to the presence of this category in those varieties. By means of analyzing interviews conducted in different Spanish cities (Barcelona, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela), Argentinian cities (Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Santiago del Estero, Tucumán, Córdoba and other cities in the province of Córdoba), Uruguay (Montevideo), and Cuba (Havana, Santa Clara), it was possible to show that in the Cuban variety of Spanish and in River Plate Spanish—Uruguay, Buenos Aires, Argentinian Northwest—there is no trace of an influence of the Galician avertive hube de + inf., while it gives proof of the existence of at least a perception of the avertive hube de + inf. in the Cordoban variety of Argentinian Spanish.

As in other countries, the public in Argentina became aware of the existence of something called “the theory of relativity” only after November 1919. Although the news of Arthur Eddington's eclipse expedition, which provided the first confirmation of Einstein's theory, was poorly reported in the newspapers, by the end of 1920 Einstein had become a household name for the educated middle class of Buenos Aires, the capital city of the country. This was in great measure the result of the activity of a few enthusiastic lecturers. Significantly, none of them belonged to the prestigious Institute of Physics of the University of La Plata, which during the decade of the 1910s was considered the most important center of physical research in Latin America. Between July and August 1920 the Spanish physicist Blas Cabrera – perhaps the greatest popularizer of Einstein's theory in Spain – visited Argentina and talked about relativity. In September Georges Duclout, a French engineer who had graduated from the Zurich Polytechnic and by then was professor of applied mechanics at the School of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (FCEFyN) of the University of Buenos Aires, also gave a series of conferences on the subject. That same month José Ubach, a Jesuit astronomer trained at the Ebro Observatory in Spain, and established in Buenos Aires, lectured on relativity at the Colegio del Salvador.

The British involvement with Argentina has a long and, at times, tumultous history. Dating as far back as the 18th century the Rio de la Plata basin held a great attraction for British merchants. England needed Spanish America as a source of bullion and an outlet for individual goods.As early as the 1540s British vessels explored the coastlines, of Argentina. There already existed a considerable amount of trade between Brazil and England throughout the sixteenth century. The buccaneer William Hawkins, along with other Englishmen, was intent on expanding on this clandestine trade to other areas in the New World. Sometimes with the cooperation of the Spanish authorities, certain British merchants were able to maneuver themselves into the commercial life of these new colonies. By the eighteenth century the British had established numerous slave markets in Hispanic America including one in Buenos Aires.

El análisis de los topics de las letras de canciones compuestas por inmigrantes italianos muestra que vehiculizaron estructuras de sensibilidad asociadas a la italianidad. Entonces, el nacionalismo consideró estos textos como ajenos ―no creolizables―. Por ello, para comprender los efectos de este plexo textual de creación inmigrante no habría que indagar en las condiciones intrínsecas del texto artístico sino en su inadecuación al metatexto instructivo hegemónico nacionalista de la cultura.In the late 19th and early 20th Century Buenos Aires was modeled as “Babel”; in response to this model arose the systems of rules of nationalist aesthetics. The analysis of the topics of the lyrics of songs composed by Italian immigrants shows that they conveyed structures of sensitivity associated with Italianity. Consequently, the nationalism considered these texts as foreign ―not syncretizable―. Therefore, in order to understand the effects of this textual plexus of immigrant creation, one should not inquire into the intrinsic conditions of the artistic text, but rather in its inadequacy to the nationalist hegemonic instructive metatext of culture.

Domestic literary studies increasingly pay attention to modern literature in Russian created outside our country. These corpus of texts is often called «Russian-language literature», «literature in Russian» or «Russophone literature». Hence, this paper is based on the work of Oksana Chernyavskaya, an author who lives in Argentina, but writes in Russian. Notably, this author's works are virtually understudied at the moment. The research deals with the image of Buenos Aires, described in the book «What is Argentina, or the Logic of Absurdity» by Oksana Chernyavskaya. The study employs the methods of literary and comparative analysis. Based on the study of works by Russian and foreign scholars devoted to the image of Buenos Aires in the works of Latin American writers, as well as the book by O. Chernyavskaya the conclusion is made that the portrayal of the Argentinean capital in the book in Russian partially coincides with the image of Buenos Aires in the Latin American poetry and prose of the XX century. The text by O. Chernyavskaya also contains the image of Buenos Aires as seen by tourists and immigrants. The image of the capital is created also through the North/South and capital/ provincial dichotomies. Findings of this research can be used by students and teachers in schools, specialized secondary schools and higher educational institutions, where contemporary Russian literature (literature in Russian of the XXI century) is studied.

This article will provide an overview of the changes in household composition in the city of Buenos Aires during the first decades of nation building. The discussion of household structures is based on a detailed analysis of the homes of thirty-five thousand porteños (residents of the city of Buenos Aires). The quantitative data are taken from three relatively complete manuscript census returns for the years 1810, 1827, and 1855. Once certain flaws in these census tracts are taken into account, the tracts represent an ample cross-section of urban Buenos Aires society. The variations found in household structures will be used to advance a theory about an underlying dimension of the durability of caudillo rule in Argentina. The proposed thesis on the relationship between strongman leadership and popular following is also based on interpretations employing classic sociological theory. The tentative conclusions concern the nature of early nineteenth-century political culture and afford opportunities for fresh explanations of the period's caudillismo. The data are thus presented in the hope of broadening the scope of discussion about political leadership in the early stages of nation building in Spanish America.

The article analyzes the image of Buenos Aires in the narrative of Ana María Shua, an Argentine writer of Polish Jewish descent. Urban space plays an important role in her prose described often as apocalyptic or dystopian. Through a historiographical metafiction, the author rewrites the memory of the ancestors in El libro de los recuerdos (2007), a novel that presents the life of Jewish immigrants in the capital of Argentina, divided into neighborhoods marked by their ethnicity. Eroticism and the use of the female body are, on the other hand, the topics that dominate in the author’s collection of micro-stories titled Casa de geishas (2009), where the brothel is described as a singular ghetto, rooted in the city panorama. Finally, the novel La muerte como efecto secundario offers a dystopic description of a future of a ghettoized city, where compulsory geriatric ghettos become a reality. The article, based on the analysis of the aforementioned works, presents a critical look at the use of the concept of “ghetto” or “urban island” in the construction of the narrative structure and space in Ana María Shua’s fiction.

To analyze crossdialectal variation between the use of a Present Perfect form (Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto) and a Perfective Past form (Pretérito Indefinido) in Spanish, we make use of two converging methodologies: (i) parallel corpus research, where we compare different translations of the same text (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) into specific standardized written varieties of Spanish (Peninsular, Mexican, Argentinian), and (ii) an elicitation forced-choice task, where native speakers of each of the cities in which these standardized written norms are produced (Madrid, Mexico City, Buenos Aires) have to choose between the Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto and the Pretérito Indefinido as the most natural filler for a blank in contexts extracted from the novel. Results from these two tasks do not align completely. While the data from our parallel corpus work indicate a wider distribution of Perfect use in the Mexican translation than in the Peninsular and the Argentinian ones, the elicitation task shows that only the choices of the speakers of Madrid (Castilian Spanish) and Buenos Aires (Rioplatense Spanish) converge with their respective translations patterns. Since the distribution observed in the Mexican translation not only goes against the elicitation data, but also contradicts previous findings in the literature, we abandon it in further analyses. In the second part of the paper, through a detailed annotation of the Peninsular and Argentinian corpora, we show that the constraints allowing Perfect use in each of these standardized varieties respond only to some features previously advanced in the literature. While both dialects allow for experiential and resultative readings of the Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto, Castilian Spanish also prefers the use of this marker to locate an event in the hodiernal past. On the other hand, Rioplatense Spanish systematically defaults to the Pretérito Indefinido in these cases, displaying a more restricted distribution for the Perfect form. Both dialects also seem to exhibit a preference for the Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto in continuative contexts. Our work thus provides two crucial take-home messages: (i) understanding crossdialectal variation in written language is crucial for advancing crosslinguistic generalizations about tense-aspect phenomena; and (ii) combining parallel corpus and experimental methodologies can help us understand in a more thorough way the distribution of Perfect and (Perfective) Past forms across dialects.

En el artículo se analizan las oraciones interrogativas absolutas SVO: un SN (núcleos sintácticos paroxítonos, proparoxítonos, oxítonos), un SV (núcleo paroxítono), un SPrep (núcleos paroxítonos, proparoxítonos, oxítonos). También se examinan los pretonemas según el modelo de entonación métrico y autosegmental (AM), y se observa la influencia de la frase fonológica (φ) en la representación fonológica de los acentos tonales. Los resultados de los pretonemas indican diferencias y no un único fraseo prosódico que caracterice a esta modalidad. Los primeros picos (P1) de la primera φ no muestran tonos más altos si se los compara con los P1 de oraciones declarativas. Se descarta un tono de frontera H% inicial. Estos hallazgos confirman otro estudio previo: la información sobre la modalidad interrogativa absoluta se encuentra fuera del pretonema, en el tonema final.

El presente trabajo ofrece un relevamiento de estudios normativos argentinos sobre pruebas cognitivas para adultos. Se efectuó una revisión sistemática (en el período 2000-2020) mediante la búsqueda en las bases Dialnet, Scielo, LILACS, biblioteca electrónica MINCyT de Argentina, Google académico y Pubmed, quedando seleccionados 42 trabajos académicos. Dichos estudios normalizan un total de 26 pruebas de distintos dominios cognitivos, fundamentalmente procesos atencionales, memoria, lenguaje y funciones ejecutivas. Los mismos fueron efectuados mayoritariamente en poblaciones de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires y Provincia de Buenos Aires con educación media-superior. Se recomienda que próximos estudios contribuyan a una cobertura geográfica nacional más amplia, precisen con exactitud el lugar de residencia de la población analizada, e incorporen una muestra representativa de sujetos con baja escolaridad. Asimismo, se sugiere a los profesionales psicólogos y neurólogos tener en consideración esta revisión al confeccionar su propia batería neurocognitiva, siempre atentos a futuras actualizaciones normativas.

Abstract It is well known that Spanish futurizing morphology is frequently used not to express futurity, but instead to formulate a hypothesis, i.e. express epistemic modality. Although this is possible with both synthetic or periphrastic future marking, the synthetic future tense is more likely to express an epistemic reading than the periphrastic future. This paper explores the relationship between futurizing morphology and sentence type on the basis of a quantitative analysis of about n = 2,700 tokens of synthetic and periphrastic ‘future’ constructions in spoken conversations from Madrid, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. On the basis of a bottom-up classification of these tokens regarding their potential to express modal meanings, we demonstrate that polar and partial futurizing interrogatives are more likely to display modal meanings and associated rhetorical effects than futurizing declaratives. This effect is even stronger for synthetic future constructions, due to a conventionalization of specific form-function pairings. Finally, we also document substantial dialectal variation in the use of futurizing morphology.

This article describes public primary English language education in Argentina. I begin with background information about the country and a brief historical overview of education in general, accompanied by a portrait of primary schooling in particular. This overview involves local, political and economic considerations but also international influences that have played a key role in shaping the direction of language policies in primary education at the provincial and national levels in the country. I describe the national curriculum guidelines (Núcleos de aprendizaje prioritario, NAP) for foreign language education, contextualising them within the national education policies for primary school in force since 2003 and the new National Education Act (Ley Nacional de Educación 26.206). These guidelines and policies adopt an intercultural and plurilingual approach in the teaching of foreign languages, including English, at all levels of education and embrace a social justice conceptualisation of education in all cases. This approach has been materialised in ELT curriculum developments and programs in several of the 24 jurisdictions of the country with different degrees of development. I illustrate with the cases of the provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Entre Ríos and Chubut using interview data collected in 2015. Program leaders in these provinces describe their local initiatives. The article closes with a brief account of the affordances observed and the challenges ahead.

AbstractThis paper presents a corpus-based interactional analysis of non-embedded indicative que-clauses (IQCs) in three regional varieties of Spanish (Madrid, Spain; Santiago de Chile, Chile; and Buenos Aires, Argentina), using data from the corpus COLA (Corpus Oral del Lenguaje Adolescente). On the one hand, we show that IQCs exhibit regional variation regarding the discourse contexts in which they appear: not all contexts are equally available for each regional variety. Moreover, we argue that this variation can be placed on a cline that ranges from high discourse dependency to low discourse dependency, which might, in turn, suggest a divergent evolution of IQCs in the dialectal spectrum of Spanish. On the other hand, our analysis complements previous typologies of IQCs in two respects: (i) it describes the discourse contexts in which different types of IQCs are used, and (ii) it shows specific contexts and interpretations that had not been explicitly acknowledged in existing generative studies.

A remarkable example of Spanish-Italian contact is the Spanish variety spoken in Buenos Aires (Porteño), which is said to be prosodically “Italianized” due to migration-induced contact. The change in Porteño prosody has been interpreted as a result of transfer from the first language (L1) that occurred when Italian immigrants learned Spanish as a second language (L2; McMahon, 2004). This article aims to examine if and to what extent prosodic features that are typical of Italian show up in Porteño and in L2 Castilian Spanish produced by Italian native speakers. Specifically, we investigated speech rhythm and the realization of yes-no questions in Porteño and L2 Castilian Spanish in comparison to Italian and L1 Castilian Spanish. We hypothesized that Italian, Porteño, and L2 Castilian Spanish would exhibit similar rhythm patterns, showing high values for the percentage of vocalic material, the variation coefficient of vocalic intervals, and the speech-rate-normalized pairwise variability index for vowels as well as high frequencies of rising prenuclear accents, with the peak located at the end of the syllable (L+H*) and falling final contours in yes-no questions, in contrast to Castilian Spanish. The results confirm our predictions for speech rhythm but not entirely for the intonation of yes-no questions.

This study assessed how many motivational factors were required to explain scores for prosocial behavior, as measured by the Spanish version of the Prosocial Tendencies Measure. A sample of 472 middle class children and adolescents, both sexes, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, completed the Prosocial Tendencies Measure. This instrument presents prosocial behavior in six types: altruistic, compliant, emotional, public, anonymous, and dire. However, there is evidence that there should be a valid four-factor solution. To verify which factor structure better fit the empirical data obtained, two confirmatory analyses were performed. The results suggest that a four-factor structure (altruistic, public, anonymous, and responsive) is a more parsimonious explanation of the prosocial responses, compared to a six-factor solution. Finally the correlations between the four dimensions reinforced the hypothesis that altruism is the only prosocial behaviour that is selflessly motivated.

This article addresses David Lamelas's 1970 work Publication, arguing that it represents a subtle critique of the internationalization of conceptual art by a recent entrant into the West European milieu. Exhibited at Nigel Greenwood Gallery in London after the artist's 1968 relocation from Argentina, Publication consists of thirteen written responses to three statements about the possible use of “language as an Art Form” that were sent by Lamelas to international figures in conceptual art such Daniel Buren, Gilbert and George, Lucy Lippard, and Lawrence Wiener. A close reading of this and others of Lamelas's experiments works leading up to this moment reveals affinities with earlier artistic experiments in Buenos Aires, the artist's original context, that have anything but membership in a preexisting movement or the adoption of an established genre as their goal. Between the years 1965 and 1968, Lamelas was part of a group of artists associated with the Torcuato di Tella Institute and the writer Oscar Masotta, who advocated an analytical and antagonistic “dematerialization,” in which prevailing tendencies were to be systematically examined, voided from within, and superseded. In Buenos Aires, Lamelas experimented with breaking his works into sections as a way of calling attention to given objects of attention—a practice of “signaling” that is also present in Publication. Invariably, these works were positioned in critical relationship to those of his peers, applying Masotta's model to each new milieu. In what follows, I compare select works of Lamelas with his contemporaries in Buenos Aires and abroad between 1964 and 1970, contending that Publication represents one of the first appearances of a specifically Argentine, and highly critical, mode of conceptualism in the international art field.

This article examines the records of mental incompetence cases filed at a court of the first instance in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis framework and qualitative methods, we explore the ways in which mental health sufferers are represented. Applying Tone Theory and Appraisal Theory (attitude/judgement subsystem) to our data, we distinguish two discursive zones. In one of them, subjects are constructed with linguistic resources that amount to inscribed expressions of negative social judgement on their capacity. A discursive dichotomy is created whereby people are either competent or incompetent. In the other zone, these negative dichotomous judgements are largely softened by explicitly positive ones, without disappearing altogether. We suggest that mental incompetence, far from being a dichotomous concept, might be gradual.

The Settlement of European Immigrants in the City of Buenos Aires (1880-1920)</p><p>The present article is based on the national census of Argentina as wellas on the municipal census of the city of Buenos Aires, during the period 1869-1914; it aims to illuminate certain aspects of the mutual relationship developed between the immigrants' action and the urban space where they were called to settle in. The choices of housing and the «routes» of the different ethnic groups in the neighbourhoods and suburbs of the city were inserted in a wider context, defined by structural factors related to work, social hierarchies and urban space's organization. However, this context did not exist independently from the immigrants' action: their cultural characteristics, desires and decisions were constantly creating new conditions that contributed to the successive transformations of Buenos Aires' urban network. The map of the different settlements of the ethnic groups in the city of Buenos Aires reveals, on the one hand, the absence of closed ghettoes and exclusive neighbourhoods and, on the other hand, the tendency of the ethnic groups to be concentrated in certain zones; these tendencies oblige us to moderate both the image of an harmonic coexistence of all immigrants, as well as the model based on the existence of clear boundaries among ethnic groups, accordingly to their position in the social hierarchies. Many and varying factors seem to have conditioned the settlement patterns of ethnic groups: the great number and the early arrival of Italian and Spanish immigrants contributed to their dispersion all over the city, whereas smaller ethnic groups such as the Portuguese and the British, tended to be more concentrated in certain neighbourhoods. The remarkable concentration of certain groups, such as the French and the British, was also due to their high socio-economic level; Finally, the cohesion of latter immigrant groups —Russian Jews, Syrianand Lebanese— could be attributed to their cultural particularity incomparison to the host society. However, the map of the settlements of the ethnic groups was not a static one but was constantly changing: since the beginning of the 20th century until 1914, one could observe a high mobility towards the city's periphery, related to the access to the proper house, which determined the city's expansion patterns. The immigrants' action in the suburbs determined not only Buenos Aires' urbanisation process but also the architecture and the neighbourhoods' style. Despite the decisive role of mass transports' expansion and the opportunities offered by the landmarket, immigrants' mobility towards the suburbs can not be conceived independently of the ethnic social networks through which many immigrants followed the steps of their parents and fellow countrymen. Besides, the role of the argentine state in the housing problem was limited: the attempt to create some state subsidized houses in the periphery had very relative results and the poor suburbs were mostly inhabited through more «spontaneous» mechanisms, based on the ethnic social networks.</p>

Relevance: The problem of studying the work of one of the outstanding masters of the Russian Diaspora – Stephan Erzia, who created several hundred sculp-tures in Argentina, has been raised. Their specificity, connection with the culture of the country hasn’t been studied properly, and cultural and art history analysis has not been carried out. At the same time, identifying the reasons why the Argentineans per-ceive his art in relation to the Argentine one, is an essential research task. Moreover, Erzia’s exhibitions of recent years, held in Buenos Aires, Moscow and St. Petersburg, were successful. Novelty: The uniqueness of Erzia’s work is due to his double mentality. He saw the world not only as Russian, but also as Argentinean. New cultural meanings are in-dicated in the problems of his sculptures and in the visual language itself. Erzia’s stay in Argentina is considered in the context of the formation of na-tional art. Including the example of the synthesis of architecture and sculpture of representative build-ings created by European masters. Although the 20–40s of the 20th century were an era of prosperity for Argentina, their own architects will only make them-selves known in the 1930s. Many of them worked in Europe and Argentina. The interest in Erzia’s art before his first exhibition in Buenos Aires was pre-pared by the press. The articles emphasized that the sculptor would show the works that were success-fully demonstrated in 1926 in Paris. The audience became convinced of the high professionalism and genre diversity of the master's works. A year after his arrival, Erzia turns less to marble and bronze, more to the tree of local tropical species – quebracho and algarroba. They possessed exceptional density, mul-tiplicity of color shades, and expressive texture. Er-zia’s works were formed in cycles. These are por-traits and nudes, monumental images of geniuses of humanity, the theme of motherhood. A bold change in iconographic canons distinguishes the best works of the master.

Este artículo indaga en torno a las ideologías lingüísticas sobre el reemplazo de la lengua toba (qom) por el español entre los niños y las niñas de un grupo de familias indígenas de un asentamiento urbano en las afueras de la ciudad de Buenos Aires (Argentina). En este contexto, se vislumbran dos tipos de ideologías lingüísticas contrapuestas: una porción minoritaria considera al desplazamiento como un proceso casi irreversible, mientras que la mayoría confía en la vitalidad futura del idioma de sus ancestros. A partir de una mirada etnográfica, se comprenden los sentidos y valoraciones culturales implícitas y explícitas a las prácticas de habla bilingües que moldean dichas ideologías, así como también se analizan las relaciones entre ser niño, ser adulto y saber toba en el marco de un proceso de desplazamiento lingüístico.

Resumen Nos centramos en la labor del filólogo italiano Benvenuto Terracini en la Argentina, donde residió entre 1941 y 1946. Trabajamos concretamente algunos aspectos de la producción argentina de Terracini en el ámbito de los estudios literarios, concentrándonos en su serie de escritos sobre los relatos de Luigi Pirandello. Profundizamos en el trabajo sobre el concepto de estilo que Terracini plantea en dicha serie, así como en su apertura hacia una reflexión sobre el texto que enfatiza el cruce de voces, de lenguas y de registros. Nuestro planteo es que el “giro” hacia los estudios literarios contemporáneos y el interés cada vez más marcado de Terracini hacia los estudios estilísticos, que los estudiosos del filólogo señalan como aspectos fundamentales que se consolidan en el período argentino y que signarán su obra posterior, no se ligan tanto con una “carencia de medios” asociada con el contexto americano, sino más bien con las condiciones de posibilidad que el ambiente local de estudios filológicos brindaba, sobre todo a través de la acción del Instituto de Filología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Decades before the rise of the international megamusical, Franz Lehár's operetta Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) traveled the world, becoming a franchise surrounded by a constellation of commodities. Within two years of its opening in Vienna on 30 December 1905, the romantic tale of Hanna Glawari's second chance at love was playing in theatres across Europe and in “virtually every city in the German-speaking world,” including colonial communities in Africa and Asia. In Argentina, as many as five versions of the operetta opened simultaneously in Buenos Aires, each in a different language. By 1908, three Merry Widow road companies were touring the United States, and numerous burlesques of the piece were vying for the attention of theatregoers.

Resumen Este trabajo se propone analizar el concepto de errancia y su resonancia psicogeográfica en Cuaderno alemán (2015) y Buenos Aires Tour (2006), de la escritora argentina María Negroni. Entendida como un movimiento vagabundo y sin rumbo, la errancia plantea una crisis de la presencia del sujeto y una búsqueda donde la percepción del espacio, a través de la escritura de un diario sobre los recorridos por ciudades alemanas, modifica el sentido turístico del viaje e instala una dimensión emotiva e íntima de la ciudad. En la errancia, por lo tanto, se forja un sentido del lugar gracias a los sentimientos y significados que surgen en la interacción con el espacio urbano. Por una parte, se investigará cómo estas obras representan el aspecto psicogeográfico del espacio, es decir, los efectos psíquicos y afectivos del entorno urbano en el sujeto, mediante una cartografía emotiva que registra la experiencia del movimiento en la ciudad. Y, por otra, se examinarán los diversos modos en que ese paisaje sensorial se construye a través del diálogo entre imagen y texto, como una forma de capturar el sentido de la errancia a través del registro emotivo y no necesariamente representativo del viaje.

Abstract Historians and literary critics have described the Argentinean Pampa as a space predominantly connected to the foundational acts and discourses of the Argentinean nation. At the same time at which Argentina emerged as a nation, foundational discourses modeled the sparsely populated region lying beyond the capital Buenos Aires as a flat, unstructured landscape, as the allegedly empty space of a “desert”. The article analyzes how these geopolitical discourses are rewritten in two Argentinean novels from the last decade of the 20th century, César Aira’s La liebre (The Hare, 1991) and Juan José Saer’s Las nubes (The Clouds, 1997), which both perform an act of un-founding by creating alternative literary environments. In doing so, both novels also enact a narrative transculturation of spatial concepts drawn from European cultural theory by reterritorializing them on the territory of the Pampa.

El objetivo de este trabajo es observar el impacto de la socialización profesional en la interacción entre psicólogos y pacientes en los consultorios externos de salud mental de un hospital público de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Desde una perspectiva crítica que combina el análisis de la conversación con el análisis del discurso, analizamos entrevistas de admisión realizadas por profesionales de planta del hospital y por profesionales precarizados con menor experiencia clínica. Esto nos permite observar representaciones distintas acerca del tratamiento psiquiátrico, por un lado, y de la relación del paciente con la medicación, por otro. El análisis realizado permite afirmar que las condiciones de trabajo precario en salud mental impactan en el ingreso de los pacientes al sistema y en las percepciones que éstos puedan desarrollar de la salud mental en general y el tratamiento psiquiátrico en particular.
