Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the use of address form in Tshivenda. Chapter one concentrates on aims of study, data collection and the organisation of study. Chapter two concentrates on various studies which deal with forms of address in different communities. They introduce forms of address as a routine between people who are embedded in the socio-cultural context of society. Chapter three deals with the informal use of forms of address. This includes names, pronouns and kinship terms. Different names deal with Tshivenda names and Non- Tshivenda names, and the way they are used in different context as a form of address. The controversial use of a pronoun as a form of address is also taken into account as well as kinship terms as a form of address in family where forms are applied in informal situation. [Where the place is unstructured and they are applied in the traditional way.] Chapter four investigates the formal use of address in a structured situation, this covers titles, occupations, special address forms and innovations. Titles are used in a more structured situation. They show social rank or official position such as Doctors, Professors etc. Occupational terms are connected with a person's job. These are terms like nurses, teachers etc. The special forms of address are used in certain occasions where the sender uses an unpopular form of address, uses new techniques and they are practised by elite class, who tries to change the status quo. Chapter five gives the main conclusions of the thesis.

Guo, Wenhui.

Full text
Abstract:
Interacting in a foreign language with success requires not only the learner’s grammatical competence of the language, but also their more comprehensive mastery of communicative competence, i.e., the pragmatic, discursive, sociocultural, and sociolinguistic. The limited knowledge of a foreign language makes the non-native speakers difficult to formulate appropriate politeness manifestations in communication, especially when politeness plays a vital role in intercultural communication and underlines cultural differences. Drawing upon the insights from the study of politeness in general, and from that pertinent to the politeness usage in Chinese and Spanish cultures, the thesis examines the verbal and non-verbal devices used for the maintenance of interlanguage politeness by Chinese learners of Spanish in communication with native Spanish speakers. As a discourse analysis-based qualitative study, the thesis is carried out through a series of linguistic ethnographic investigations. A range of data is collected: recording of two conversation role-play situations between Chinese learners of Spanish and native Spanish speakers in a Spanish university, and semi-structured interviews with these students and one of their Spanish language teachers. It is hoped that the findings will open up new perspectives in the study of interlanguage used by Chinese learners of Spanish, and shed much light on the pedagogy of Spanish as a foreign language.

This work investigates the acquisition of the pronouns tu and você and other forms of address in Portuguese as a second language, and the acquisition of Brazilians culture as a second culture. It was aimed to identify and characterize general factors (affective and social ones) involved in the acquisition process, to characterize the learning strategies used, to verify the way general factors influence the learning strategies used and to analyse the ways those factors influence on the second culture acquisition. Important masterpieces were used - some that use the socio-educational model of acquisition of a second language, among others that approach the concept of second culture acquisition. With the data provided by this research, it was verified that: (i) a significant part of foreign students who came to Brazil to study presents an integrative motivation; (ii) one of the learning strategies used for foreign students is the interaction with Brazilians; (iii) the positive attitude toward the interaction with Brazilians and the exposition to Brazilian culture helps the language and culture acquisition. On the other hand, the attitude was the major point of this research, just getting a little bit far from the theory used. Even this way, it was possible to notice that the success on Portuguese language acquisition comes together with Brazilian culture acquisition. The research and the results found can help teachers and researches on the elaboration of new pedagogical material and on the improvement of new methodologies for teaching PL2-E.

This dissertation investigates kinship address forms in Japanese and in Brazilian Portuguese, with applicability in Portuguese as a Second Language classes. Both in Japanese language and Portuguese language it is possible, for example, to use the word uncle to refer to a person who isn’t actually brother nor brother-in-law of either your parents. Still, the way of using this and other kinship words as address forms differ in these two languages. With data collected from Japanese and Brazilian comic books, the use of the following kinship words is analyzed: brother, father, grandfather, grandson, husband, son, uncle and its respective feminine forms. The analysis is based in concepts from Anthropology, Interculturalism and Pragmatics and it confirms that there are differences between Japanese and Brazilian use of kinship words. The results of this research show when, how and why each of these forms is chosen by the speaker to talk with a non-relative.

Rouse, Patrick Roy. "The New Voseo Culto: An Exploration of the Complexity of Familiar Address in Chilean Spanish." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1118.

Full text
Abstract:
In Chilean Spanish, second-person address is non-uniform in that the vos competes with the conventional tuteo and a third, mixed form has emerged. To add to this complexity, the form speakers choose has been shown to correspond to socioeconomic strata. Upper classes use tú, lower classes use vos, and young, middle class speakers choose the mixed form in which the verb is conjugated according to the voseo and is used with the pronoun tú. The causes and effects of this second-person schism in Chile are explored here, as well as the resulting sociolinguistic issues and consequences. In a study of printed media, television and interviewed informants, an attempt is made to confirm and validate the complexity of address in Chilean Spanish and determine the degree of the mixed voseo‟s pervasion into the mainstream.

Morales, Ramirez David. Thesis, Rennes 2, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022REN20017.

Full text
Abstract:
In our research we have found that the Pronouns of address in Costa Rican Spanish are in a constant struggle between standardization and linguistic change, as well as between the norm and variation. For example, in chapter 1 of the thesis, regarding the diachronic approach, we can conclude that the pronoun usted has always been linked to an explanatory and descriptive analysis in Costa Rican Spanish. The studies point out that there is objectivity and neutrality when analyzing the functional and structural categorization of the pronoun. Meanwhile, vos and tú have been the object of a struggle between the prescriptive and the descriptive. In relation to chapter 2, regarding the chapter on attitudes, perceptions and linguistic evaluations concerning the Pronouns of address in Costa Rican Spanish, informants assign different positive evaluations to usted. Respondents focus mostly on clarifying how they use usted to mark positioning and acts of identity. On the other hand, for the same informants, different stereotypes continue to circulate around vos and tú. In the following chapters (3 and 4), in terms of the written language, newspapers as mass media are opting more for tú as part of the use of a standardized modality. On the other hand, in the spoken language, in terms of oral advertising both on television and radio, Costa Rica is following its own linguistic norm. The vos above all and the usted in a certain way are the instruments of expression of the mass media. Likewise, outside the advertising space, tú is the normative pronoun in electronic writing (chapter 5). In summary, there are different statuses of pronouns because the rules are different. For example, at the diacritical and perceptual level usted is the point of reference in usage. While in oral advertising it is vos and in written advertising and electronic writing it is tú. From this perspective, we can confirm, once again, the complexity concerning the Pronouns of address in Costa Rican Spanish, since it moves between different regulations depending on the register

Abstract:
This research investigates the differences between how men and women greet and take leave of someone of the same sex in Saudi Arabia, a gender segregated society. Age, social status, relationship between participants, and setting were also tested to see if they have any effect on how Saudis greet and take leave of each other.A total of 237 participants: 127 males and 110 females were recorded in naturally occurring conversations. The participants were from all social classes and included three age groups: 18-30, 31-50, and over 50. Relationship between participants included close friends, relatives, acquaintances, and strangers. Data was collected in social and family gatherings, work, school, and the hospital. The data was analyzed in light of Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. Variables like formulaic expressions, length, and hyperbole were also tested. The results of the study indicate that age had a significant affect on how Saudis greet, take leave/reply to a leave-taking of someone of the same sex. Based on my corpus, social status had no significant affect on how Saudis greet/reply and take leave/reply of someone of the same sex. The relationship between participants showed a significant correlation with how Saudis greet/reply and take leave/reply of someone of the same sex. Setting had no significant affect of how Saudis greet and take leave of someone of the same sex. But it did show a significant affect of how Saudis reply to greetings and leave-takings of someone of the same sex. Gender did not on any significant affect on how Saudis greet and reply to greetings of someone of the same sex. Whereas, gender showed a significant correlation with how Saudis take leave and reply to a leave-taking.Results of the study indicate that women consistently took longer to greet and take leave of someone of their own sex, regardless of age, social status, relationship between participants, or setting. Women also used more metaphors and superlatives while greeting or taking leave of someone of their own sex. Women were found to repeat their greetings and leave-takings more than men.

Abstract:
From the observation made with the spanish foreign language students have great difficulty in mastering the use of terms of address, this work tries to elucidate the reasons which offers reflections to the problem. Terms of address as a personal and social deictic are markers of the interpersonal relationship that all speakers built with his interlocutor. In spanish, the address system is complex variations diatopiques as well as the specific features of its system, including the pronoun usted, which designated an allocutaire has a morphology of third person. Furthermore, it must take into account the situation of communication, which is variable depending on the cultures and societies. From a corpus of data consisting of oral interactions of french university students, we make an interactional and pragmalinguistic analysis which allows to identify the major difficulties posed by learning and mastery in context of the terms of address, second-person pronouns and nominal forms. It is shown that these errors in the speech of the students are not only of linguistic origin, but are also induced by a lack of fitness for the communication situation. Thus, the address terms are one of the elements whose use depends not only on the level of interlanguage, but also of socio-cultural competence of the speakers

"Spanish Address Forms in US Newspapers." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15827.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Advertisements intend to persuade the reader to invest money or time in a product or service. Newspapers contain advertisements that are space-limited, thus necessitating a concise and convincing message that will influence readers. Nord (2008) analyzed conative function (Jakobson 1960) as a persuasive tool in a corpus of Spanish, English, and German advertising texts. A portion of Nord's study focused on sender attitude indicators directed at addressees as a key element of conative function, and analyzed address forms among several attitude indicators found in print advertisements. The current study analyzed 604 Spanish newspaper advertisements in Arizona and Florida, focusing on possible independent factors related to the probability of the occurrence of various address forms. These factors included: the type of product being advertized and its cost, the nature of the advertisement, the location of the advertisement in the newspaper (main section, sports, etc.), intended audience (including age and sex), geographic region of the newspaper, and each newspaper as compared to others. These variables were categorized and statistically analyzed using a quantitative design. The study provided results indicating a strong statistical relationship between the presence of address forms and product type, a moderate relationship with audience age, and a mild relationship with product cost. Various similarities and differences were also found when comparing the data geographically.

Abstract:
Present work outlines –for the first time– the state of the Spanish language spoken by the Colombian community in Montreal with reference to the forms of pronominal and nominal address and verbal politeness. In order to conduct this study, a fieldwork was undertaken through a questionnaire and semi-conducted oral interviews addressed to 30 informants. The analysis of the collected data has allowed us to establish the first research comparing the way Colombian inhabitants and Colombians in Montreal speak and to identify some of the main linguistic changes in this spoken Spanish community. It is mostly in relation to the forms of address and politeness actions that have been affected by the influence of French and English languages. The analysis that has been carried out takes into consideration the linguistic, pragmatic and social factors of the speakers. In this way, the results provide recent insights about the description of the dynamics of the forms of address from speakers of three different representative dialectical zones of Colombia such as the oriental Andean region, occidental Andean region and the Caribbean coastal zone. Together with other previous studies, our work contributes to a better understanding of the linguistic reality of the Spanish language spoken by monolingual, bilingual or trilingual Colombians.

Sherman, Richard Word 1941. "Students of Spanish and the Spanish preterit and imperfect verb forms." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/18372.

Abstract:
A questionnaire was administered to a selected group of students of Spanish at The University of Texas. The responses to this questionnaire were studied to determine the students’ motivations, attitudes, and cognitive strategies concerning the Spanish preterit and imperfect verb forms. It was found that the students felt that these Spanish verb forms are important in Spanish study and that they are a difficult portion of Spanish study. Also, most of the students surveyed used rule-based cognitive strategies concerning the study of these verb forms, in that a large percentage of the students’ strategies are to study their textbook and to memorize grammar rules. Generally, the students felt that the Spanish preterit is less difficult than the Spanish imperfect and that more drills, work sheets, and instructor-supplied examples would be beneficial to their learning processes. Those students with lower self-reported grades concerning the Spanish preterit and imperfect are more likely to have been informed that the Spanish preterit and imperfect are difficult areas of Spanish study.

The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of socio-cultural rules underlying address behaviour in face-to-face interactions in Xitsonga. In the study, a socio-pragmatic approach is used. This approach is a combination of sociolinguistics and pragmatics. Data are collected using semi-structured interviews from 29 participants in Hlanganani region. Hlanganani is a Xitsonga speech community located in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The participants were selected in terms of five variables, namely their age, gender, marital status, educational status and occupation. Five theories are tested in this study, namely Brown and Gilman’s (1968) theory of power and solidarity, Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, the theory of accommodation, the theory of universal grammar and the Gricean theory of conversation. The study finds that Hlanganani is an age-set society in that the age of a person is the primary determiner of address choice. The male gene also receives superior status in address behaviour in Xitsonga. It is also found that women are given the same lower status as children. It is observed that women’s statuses reflect their graduation in terms of marriage and the production of children. It is recommended that more studies of a similar kind should be undertaken based on either different speech communities or on a comparative basis of particularly African languages. Such studies will go a long way in describing similarities and differences in both the linguistic and the social structures of different cultures.

Abstract This study aims to investigate the use of Russian address forms by college students in Taiwan, while addressing their Russian teachers when in or not in class. By focusing on a group of Chinese speakers in Taiwan, typically regarded as having politeness norms and addressing system very different from those of Russian speakers, this paper aims at possibly providing evidence for cultural influence on addressing systems. This study was carried out on one hundred and twenty-eight college students at the Department of Russian Language and Literature at Tamkang University, in Tamsui, Taipei County, Taiwan. The students were divided into four groups, according to their academic year at university. The multiple-choice questionnaires were used to test the objectives of this study. The results revealed that the majority of the students (69.34%) in all groups chose a given name and patronymic as a major address form. Furthermore, the freshman year students used more of a given name and a patronymic (76.89%), and then the sophomore year students (61.81%) used less of a given name and a patronymic address form and (38.19%) started using more of a title alone or a title and a last name, or a teacher’s given name. The half of the junior year students (50%) started addressing a teacher with a title alone or a title and a last name. Finally, the senior year students (82.90%) chose more of a given name and a patronymic address form. Gender also plays an important role in choosing an address form. Thus, female and male respondents used more of a given name and a patronymic when addressing Russian teachers. However, the female students in all groups used a given name and a patronymic address form as well as a title alone, and a title and a last name. While the majority of the male subjects tended to use a given name and a patronymic address form. Only the majority of the junior year male students used a title alone or a title and a last name as the major address forms. When choosing a personal pronoun, the majority of the male subjects in all groups addressed their female and male Russian teachers with the Vy form. The majority of the female respondents in all groups also chose the Vy form to address teachers. However, females more than males addressed a Russian teacher with the Ty form, or didn’t use any personal pronouns, or used other forms of address. The research embodied in this study led to the conclusion that culture and cultural values influenced Chinese and Russian address systems. Furthermore, the differences between the two gender groups and the four academic years’ (freshman to senior) groups were significant.

"THE EFFECT OF "CHATTING" ON THE ORAL PRODUCTION OF SPANISH PRESENT TENSE FORMS IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM." Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.14985.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Current research shows a positive relationship between the use of written synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and oral production (Isenberg 2010; Kern 1995; Payne & Whitney, 2002). No prior investigations specifically analyze the effect of SCMC on the conjugation of simple present tense verbal forms in narratives produced by learners of Spanish in online environments. This semester-long study addressed this issue by systematically analyzing the effect of written SCMC on the oral production of present-tense verb conjugations in two different oral tasks by students in two different intermediate level online Spanish courses. Written chat (WC), a type of synchronous group discussion, was used in the treatment group in order to examine the crossover effects of written SCMC on present tense forms in oral production tasks among intermediate Spanish students in online courses. Both online groups engaged in 30 minutes of concentrated interaction with the instructor and other students each week. The control group engaged in 30 minutes of oral interaction per week while the experimental group was exposed to 15 minutes of oral chat and 15 minutes of WC in the 30 minute session of interaction. Specifically, this study employed a pretest/posttest quasi-experimental design and tested the differential effects of a combination of oral and written SCMC online interaction and SCMC solely oral online interaction on the acquisition of Spanish present tense verb forms. The findings show a significant difference in oral gains among the experimental group.

Beteringhe, Alina Magdalena. "Learning from the city? : the construction of Romanian elites." 2014. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1745602.

Abstract:
This thesis will focus on the changes that modernization, especially during the transition period from communism to capitalism, brought to the use of the terms “domn” (sir) and “doamna” (lady) in Romania. The main question of the research will be whether these terms are still used and if they are used with the same meaning as they were before: in short, what does it mean to be ‘lady” or “sir” in modern Romania? The thesis will try to examine the way modern life lessened the differences between country side/rural life and town/urban life and between people with different educational levels. In Romania little research has been done examining how modernization affects everyday life and how individuals view and understand the world. Modernization is a key word in almost every field in Romania today, but the human dimension especially that of everyday life has not received much attention. The thesis will try to give a perspective on how the recent social transformations have changed the way people view themselves and the opportunities that developed as a result. Romania is an East European country in transition. This means that among other things that for Romanians things seem to change rapidly and sometimes abruptly in very short time, often without much sense or logic. The result is that Romanians have had to learn how to adapt very quickly and to learn new social and material skills almost every day. Romania and her passage from socialism to capitalism can be a laboratory for anthropological research on some of the disciplines central and emerging themes. Among these is how the elite is self constructed and self selected over time. Another is the role that shifts in elites can play in a country’s and a culture’s economic and cultural transitions. This research will also add to the literature on Romania because while elite’s effects, both positive and negative have received much media attention, the scholarly literature is almost silent in how elites are defined and emerged since 1989. The study of the elites will also bring a better understanding of the way people in Romania behave, understand and accept each other. It will also help us to understand their goals and how these got defined in this transition period in Romania’s history. Looking at how Romanians think about (categorize) each other will also help the rest of the world understand Romanian culture and society. This is important - especially for those inside and outside the country who have a stake in Romania’s future.

Abstract:
An immense degree of linguistic diversity exists in the work force where it is possible for speakers of twenty-three home languages to come into contact on the work floor. The language of management in industry is predominantly English; while supervisors are primarily English- or Afrikaans-speaking. Misinterpretation of speaker intent plays a significant role in communication breakdown that occurs when management or foremen/supervisors communicate directly with workers who do not understand the two erstwhile official languages sufficiently or not at all. Reagan ( 1 986) hypothesized that the greatest number of problems are caused by what might be termed mutual ignorance, rather than by language difficulties. The aim of the thesis was therefore to establish what constitutes the mutual ignorance that leads to misinterpretation of speaker intent. The Hymesian model, the ethnography of speaking, was used as a model for an analysis of sociolinguistic features in factories in the Pretoria-WitwatersrandVereeniging area. For data collection a process of triangulation was used and qualitative and quantitative methods used. The Free Attitude Interview technique was used for unstructured interviews. Other methods include observation, and elicitation procedures such as the Discourse Completion Test, which were used in structured interviews. Language preference, forms of address and politeness markers were examined. Findings revealed that the major differences were found to be in the area of non-verbal behaviour. Speakers of Afrikaans and English are, on the whole, unaware of politeness markers used by speakers of African languages. Afrikaans and English speakers are unaware of offensive non-verbal behaviour used by them. It is revealing that speakers of the official languages believe this to be the very area that makes communication possible, but it is the area in which they may cause offence. It was also found that speakers of African languages have adopted many of the features of the power dominant group at work. The findings of the research are important for the development of strategies for overcoming misinterpretation of speaker intent and negative stereotyping. This research was undertaken as part of the Human Sciences Research Council's programme entitled Language in the labour situation.

Abstract:
The presented thesis handles the theme of the addressing in European Portuguese. It is started with the critics of the existing terminology and in order to express the complexity of the current reality in the studied language more clearly, the author introduces the term of the allocution form which includes the addressing with pronouns (i.e. tu used with 2SG, você - 3SG, vós - 2PL and vocês - 3PL), as well as with the titles (e.g. o senhor / a senhora (Mr/Mrs) with variants combined with further titles and name/surname). It is worth to add that the work focuses on the indirect (or subjective) addressing (i.e. integrated into the phrase structure). The starting point of the own research is the theoretical basis comprising both external (Czech manuals, French vision by TEYSSIER 1989) and internal (based on Portuguese Grammars and studies) views of the issue. The research itself is inspired by author's personal language experience and the incertitude of the mother tongue speakers. The research method was realized by two questionnaires. The first of them (D1) gained 21 respondents coming from the academic ambient of Porto. The 2nd one (D2) covers a significantly larger amount of participants (202) as well as a wider socio-demographic and geographical structure (people of different professions from all...

Abstract:
The Forms of Address [ FA ] in Contemporary European Portuguese [ CEP ] is one of the most complex issues of the Portuguese Language, and one that raises more doubts, not only to native speakers but even more so to learners of Portuguese as a non-native language. Most of these learners intend to learn Portuguese for both the pleasure and interest of being able to communicate. Thus, and according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [ CEFRL ] ( 2001 ), a prominent role is attributed to the development of communicative competence, without this devaluing the acquisition of other language competences that work with it. For a non-native learner, it is not enough to know the FA in CEP. The challenge is not so much of a lexical-grammatical nature, but rather of a pragmatic nature. He will only be able to select the correct FA if he considers other factors that directly and/or indirectly participate in the communicative process. Aware of this difficulty, we propose a set of didactic materials which aim to develop the communicative proficiency of learners, so that they can make the language an instrument of integration. The learning of a language is always more efficient when we have reliable resources based on authentic situations / materials, thus ensuring a balanced relationship between formal learning that includes a metalinguistic aspect and learning based on diversified practices of language, orality and writing.
