Medina, F. Xavier. Food Culture in Spain. Greenwood Press, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400652479.

Full text
Abstract:
Spanish food culture has evolved around strong regional cuisines and representative elements. This volume offers an overview of Spanish food and eating habits, taking into account a long and complex history, plus distinctive social, cultural, linguistic, geographic, political, and economic characteristics. Spain’s location at the crossroads of Europe and North Africa has made it a gastronomic melting pot, with Arab influences and New World ingredients particularly noted. Readers will learn about the unique food culture in each region and how food practices and dishes in the Iberian Peninsula have developed over the centuries. Typical dishes and drinks, especially the Spanish wines, are described in context, with many accompanying recipes. Gastronomy in Spain has always been of utmost importance. Recently, the new Spanish gastronomy has taken center stage with internationally recognized chefs. Spaniards are shown to be extremely social eaters and drinkers who like to eat out. The everyday routine of eating out, such as at work and school, is clarified as well. Home cooking and the Spanish kitchen get special attention. Finally, although Spanish food has always been associated with the highly touted Mediterranean diet, health concerns about current eating trends are discussed. A timeline, a chronology, and illustrations round out the coverage.

Christoforidis, Michael. Impersonating Carmen in Victorian London. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195384567.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 considers the importance of Carmen’s early productions in London in light of long-standing local interest in Spanish-themed song and dance. The success of the opera’s 1878 debut at Her Majesty’s Theatre, starring the young American singer Minnie Hauk in a dramatic interpretation of the title role, led to numerous stagings, including translation into English, and A delina Patti’s failed impersonation of Carmen. These productions were accompanied by a proliferation of parodies over the ensuing decade, most notably the two-act Gaiety burlesque, Carmen Up to Data (1890). This successful comic entertainment illustrates how the opera’s distinctive characters, plot, and Spanish color could become a vehicle for localized humor on the popular stage.

Anderson, James M. Daily Life During the Spanish Inquisition. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400636790.

Full text
Abstract:
The life of persecuted minorities, as well as that of the wealthy and the ordinary people of Spain during the Spanish Inquisition, comes alive in this illuminating account. For three and a half centuries, the Inquisition permeated every aspect of daily life in early modern Spain. This history depicts in graphic terms the dangers faced by Jews and Muslims and their suffering at the hands of the Inquisitors, as well as the struggle for survival of the lower classes and the ostentatious display of wealth of the high nobility. Set against the political, religious, social, economic, and cultural events of the time, it presents a balanced account, rich in detail, of the daily activities of the Spanish people during this period. Each chapter offers a succinct perspective of life during early modern Spain, covering the political and social setting, the Church, the Inquisition, Jews and Conversos, Muslims and Moriscos, the court, urban and rural life, family life, clothes and fashions, food, arts and entertainment, military life, education, and health and medicine. All these aspects of life are discussed in the context of a society experiencing profound internal conflicts arising from matters of religion, class, gender, and ethnic prejudice. Interwoven in the text is a discussion of relevant political and economic events that helped to shape the times, as well as comments from both contemporary Spanish writers and foreign visitors who witnessed firsthand the conditions and attitudes of the people. More than 40 illustrations, a timeline of important events, a list of Spanish rulers during the centuries of the Inquisition, a glossary, and a bibliography add value to the narrative.
