Abstract:
Performance of peach trees at seven spacings were evaluated over an 8-year period. Treatments were `Garnet Beauty' on Lovell spaced 3.0 or 4.6 × 6.1 m and 4.6 or 6.1 × 7.6 m, self-rooted `Garnet Beauty' spaced 1.0 × 6.1 or 7.6 m then thinned to 3.0 × 6.1 or 7.6 m 4-years after planting, and self-rooted `Garnet Beauty' spaced 1.0 × 2.0 × 5.5 m managed as a meadow orchard with alternate rows pruned to 30-cm height after harvest. Trees spaced 4.6 × 6.1 m or closer were mechanically hedged beginning 4-years after planting to 9 m tall and 6 m wide. Trees in all treatments, except 1.0 × 2.0 × 5.5 m, were trained to an open-center and hand-pruned annually. Trunk area and canopy area of trees spaced 3.0 × 4.6 m or closer were smaller than trees in other spacings by 5-years after planting. Cumulative yield per ha of trees spaced 1.0 × 2.0 × 5.5 m was greater than yield from other spacings 2- through 4-years after planting, then less 6- and 7-years after planting. There were no significant differences in yield/ha among the other spacing treatments. Fruit size was not affected by treatment. Yield efficiency of trees spaced 3.0 or 4.6 × 6.1 m decreased by 8-years after planting compared to trees spaced 4.6 or 6.1 × 7.6 m, indicating a reduction in fruit bearing growth. Hand pruning time was proportional to tree spacing.

Abstract:
Abstract.HighlightsPlanting date and crop row distance from SDI laterals affect final cotton plant population, lint yield and water use.Cotton rows directly above 2.03-m spaced SDI laterals should only be used late within the cotton planting window.Positioning pairs of rows nearer to 2.03-m spaced SDI laterals increased yield compared to evenly spaced rows.SDI laterals spaced 1.02 m versus 2.03 m apart increased cotton yield by 5% and water use efficiency by 7%. In the Texas High Plains (THP), water table declines in the Ogallala Aquifer and the high evaporative environment have helped motivate the transition from surface and center pivot irrigation to subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). A major challenge to wider adoption of SDI in the region is inconsistent cotton seed germination and plant establishment due to dry overwinter conditions, the difficulty of “pushing” irrigation water upward into the seed germination zone, and the high evaporative environment during the optimum cotton planting period. To evaluate strategies for improving cotton establishment using SDI in the Southern High Plains (SHP) of Texas, a field experiment having five crop row/ SDI lateral configurations, each with two planting dates, was conducted from 2013 to 2018 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center in Halfway, Texas. Differences in final plant stands, cotton yields, cotton fiber qualities, and water productivities were determined. Averaged over planting dates and years, planting directly over 1.02-m spaced SDI laterals (Every-Row configuration) increased final plant stand by 9.5%, cotton yield by 5.1%, irrigation water use efficiencies (IWUE) by 6.7%, and irrigation value (IValue) by 6.1% over planting pairs of 1.02-m spaced rows equidistant and parallel to 2.03-m spaced laterals (Traditional configuration). Compared to the Traditional configuration, planting pairs of cotton rows 0.76 m apart with both rows closer to 2.03-m spaced SDI laterals (30-50 configuration) increased final plant stand by 9.5% and yield by 3.0%. Considering additional treatments with 2.03-m spaced cotton rows planted directly over 2.03-m spaced SDI laterals (Skip-Row configuration) and 1.02-m spaced cotton rows having one row directly over 2.03-m spaced laterals and one row “not irrigated” (Skip-Row Plus configuration), early plantings resulted in five-year yields of 1400 and 1600 kg ha-1, respectively. However, these yields were less than those from the late planted, Traditional treatment at 1620 kg ha-1. Also, IValues and IWUEs of both Skip-Row treatments were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of the Traditional treatment. Based on these results, the Skip-Row or Skip-Row Plus configurations should only be used late in the cotton planting period when soil water is not available for plant establishment using the Traditional or 30-50 configurations. Advantages of Every-Row and 30-50 over the Traditional configuration must be weighed against their increased costs. Keywords: Cotton, Germination, Irrigation, Southern High Plains, Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI).

Abstract:
The influence of in-row plant spacing on the yield and fruit size of `Blueray' (erect growing) and `Bluecrop' (spreading) highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) was studied. Plants of both cultivars, spaced at 0.61 m within the row, had significantly higher yields per hectare than plants grown at wider spacings (0.92 and 1.22 m) in each of five harvest years. On a per-plant basis, however, plants spaced at 1.22 m had higher yields in the last two harvest years of the experiment than plants spaced more closely, which indicated that interplant competition reduced per-plant yields of closely spaced plants as plants grew larger. Over the 5-year harvest period, plots with 0.61-m plant spacing produced a cumulative total yield of 17.24 t·ha more than plots with the conventional 1.22-m spacing. Plant spacing did not affect fruit size in this experiment.

Abstract:
Abstract An in situ experimental program in alluvium is implemented and analyzed to test linear superposition. After separating stochastic and deterministic propagation path effects, direct superposition is experimentally validated at 20 m for two 5-lb charges spaced as close as 2 m in alluvium. The charges are separated by the scaled range of 147 m/kt1/3 and observed at the scaled range of 1470 m/kt1/3. Finite-spatial source effects are observed and simulated in the plane passing through two charges separated by 2 to 10 m. The deterministic single-burst waveforms are used to model the multiple-burst data. The effects observed and simulated include direct superposition below the corner frequency, shift to lower corner frequency with increasing charge separation, and spectral scalloping. For charges closely spaced (up to 4 m, observed at 20 and 24 m), the primary effect on the waveform is replicated by a constant delay time between two identical waveforms. For charges spaced by 10 m (observed at 20 and 30 m), the effects of propagation path differences must be included. These effects result in smoothed spectra.

Abstract:
A clingstone peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch `Ross' on `Nemaguard' rootstock) orchard was established at the Univ. of California Kearney Agricultural Center, Parlier, for evaluating the economic efficiency of three high-density planting systems in comparison with the conventional Open Vase system. The orchard contained four replicate plots (0.80 ha/plot), each containing four different planting systems. The four planting/training systems (in-row spacing given first) were: the “KAC-V” (a perpendicular V system spaced 2.0 × 5.5 m, 919 trees/ha); the “HiD KAC V” (spaced 1.8 × 4.6 m, 1196 trees/ha); the “Cordon” (spaced 2.4 × 4.0 m, with perpendicular harvest drives 4.8 m every 22 m and tree height limited to 2.5 m, 919 trees/ha); and the “Open Vase” (spaced 6.1 × 5.5 m, 299 trees/ha). All system-specific costs and crop yields were recorded annually on each subplot for the first 5 years. Although the Cordon system had the highest yields in the second year, the V systems had the highest returns after 5 years. Cumulative costs were: HiD KAC-V system > KAC-V ≥ Cordon > Open Vase. The system that was designed to maintain tree height <2.5 m (Cordon) tended to be less profitable than the V systems because of modest crop yields and high pruning costs that were not offset by increased harvest efficiency. In the last 3 years of the study, pruning, thinning, and harvesting accounted for the majority of the system-specific costs.

Swadley, John. "The villancico in New Spain 1650-1750 : morphology, significance and development." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/15532/.

Full text
Abstract:
For almost three centuries, the sacred villancico was the primary vernacular musical form of Spain and its New World colonies. Consisting of a through-composed estribillo, or refrain, and a set of strophic coplas, or verses, these ‘devout and honest songs’ (as they were styled by the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585) featured in the Matins services of the cathedrals and convents of Mexico throughout the colonial period. This thesis traces the morphology, development and significance of the villancico in New Spain during the one hundred year period from 1650 to 1750, examining the musical development of the genre within the institutional contexts of cathedral, convent and girls’ school. The biographies and villancico oeuvres of the composers Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, Antonio de Salazar, Manuel de Sumaya, and others who moved in their orbits are reconsidered in light of new music and documentation, while the supposed New World phenomenon of the villancico de negros, or African dialect villancico, receives fresh attention. In separate chapters, the feminine side of genre is examined. The musical aspects of the life of the Hieronymite nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz are considered from the viewpoint of the music historian, while the practice of the villancico in the feminine institutions of New Spain is explored. Focussing on period documents as a means of enriching the historical narrative, the thesis is intended as an interpretation of the villancico genre for the English-speaking reader.

Machin-Autenrieth, Matthew. "Andalucía flamenca : music, regionalism and identity in southern Spain." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/49178/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, flamenco has been consolidated as a prominent symbol of regional identity in Andalusia, the southernmost region of Spain. In the late 1970s, Spain began to decentralise into seventeen autonomous regions. As a result, each region has been encouraged to foreground its own culture vis-à-vis national culture. Although associated with Spain in general, flamenco has fulfilled the role of regional identity building in Andalusia. Increasingly, the Andalusian Government has focused attention on the development of flamenco within and outside of the region. In this thesis, I explore this relationship between flamenco and regional identity in Andalusia. In doing so, I draw upon the theoretical tenets of political geography. Through scholarly exchange, I argue that political geographers and ethnomusicologists can learn much about the relationship between music and regional identity. I use flamenco as a pertinent case study of this relationship in the European context. In particular, I discuss the role that governmental institutions play in the ‘regionalisation’ (Schrijver 2006) of flamenco (that is, the institutional development of flamenco as an ‘official’ symbol of regional identity). However, I argue that at times the regionalisation process can be disputed and subverted. Accordingly, I contend that regionalism (that is, the bottom-up identification with a region) in Andalusia is a fragmented concept. By examining the contexts, the discourses and the styles associated with flamenco, I present alternative readings of regionalism in Andalusia. Drawing upon virtual ethnography and traditional ethnography in Granada, I examine the reception and the production of flamenco at a local level as well as at a regional level. Arguably, some flamenco scholars present a somewhat rigid understanding of the relationship between flamenco and regional identity. By offering different readings of regionalism through flamenco, I reveal the complex and contested relationship between flamenco and identity in southern Spain.

Abstract:
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach where subjects are taught through a dual focusing foreign language aimed at the learning of the content, and the simultaneous learning of the foreign language. The main purpose of this dissertation is dealing with the organization behind the learning foreign languages through a content-based subject and the content-based subject through foreign languages. So, the main purpose of this dissertation may be said to be about the effects of CLIL learning. Here we want to offer a multidimensional overview to the CLIL settings at an international level; Italy, Spain, Turkey, through the perceptions of educational authorities about the involvement of management teams, professional development of teachers and the academic and non-academic results obtained to ensure the success of CLIL practice as well as the level of satisfaction of the students in three different countries. In consideration of what said till now we have made use of a mixed research design, in particular QUAN – QUAL ® Findings ® Interpretation model. Teachers of linguistic areas, teachers of non-linguistic areas, coordinators, and directors are the important components of a CLIL context. As they are the guides for students as well as being the administrators of the education process, knowing their point of view is of high importance. That’s why this study pays most attention to the perception of CLIL by the educational communities and to the differences created by perception in the implementation which varies from country to country. The research participants are; directors, coordinators, teachers of linguistic areas, teachers of nonlinguistic areas and students from selected schools with CLIL provision. The research has been conducted in three different education contexts; namely, Sicily in Italy, Castilla-León Autonomous Region in Spain and Marmara Region in Turkey, at a tertiary level of education considering the theoretical, legislative and practical realities each country has within their educative systems. The functioning of CLIL program and components in the mentioned countries would be examined in details and potential ways to improve the positive results would be discussed extensively in the dissertation thesis. Key Words: CLIL, Perception, Foreign Language Teaching, Content Teaching, Diverse Educational Contexts

PELIZZARI, STEFANO. "«NELLI OCCHI DELLA FILOSOFIA». UN¿ANALISI SISTEMATICA DI FORMULE E PROCEDIMENTI LOGICI NELLE OPERE IN PROSA DI DANTE." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/923645.

Abstract:
More than twenty years ago, Enzo Cecchini prompted to realize a “systematic analysis” of the vast number of logical formulas and argumentative procedures that stud Dante’s prose works. Since then, several specific contributions have appeared, highlighting the importance of this topic both for the understanding and the philological restitutio of Dante's text. Still missing, however, is a fully comprehensive and systematic study of this side of the Poet’s philosophical language. This work aims to fill this gap, bringing to fulfillment this critical desideratum. The first part of the thesis provides an analytical census of all the passages in which Dante deploys a technical logical terminology. Specifically, the selected formulas have been compared with: (i) the main Latin translations and commentaries to the so-called "Ars Vetus" and "Ars Nova"; (ii) the most popular logical textbooks and summulae of Dante’s time (such as Peter of Spain’s Tractatus); (iii) widely consulted works such as the Auctoritates Aristotelis and Vincent of Beauvais’Specula. Rather than identifying the specific sources Dante used, the primary aim has been to scrutinize his terminology in relation to coeval logical traditions, discussing its level of linguistic and conceptual “specialism” on a case-by-case basis. In particular, possible relations with the Auctoritates Aristotelis and the Tractatus have been explored and evaluated, as well as points of contact with the more complex exegetical traditions linked to the texts of the Organon. As requested by Cecchini, all the Poet’s prose works have been included in the analysis: the Vita nova, the Convivio, the De vulgari eloquentia, the Epistole and the Monarchia. In light of the new editorial initiative of the Società Dantesca Italiana, the controversial Questio de aqua et terra has been considered as well. Thus, the traditional consideration of the “Latin Dante” has been integrated with a special attention to the “Vernacular Dante”; and the terminological enrichment leading from the Vita nova to the Monarchia and the Questio has been diachronically pointed out. In the second part, the lexicographical entries I prepared for the Vocabolario Dantesco Latino (Accademia della Crusca; Istituto Opera del Vocabolario Italiano) have been collected and presented. In this way, an essential vocabulary of Dante's logical lexicon is provided, as a tool of easy reference to be used when Dante's text «fia […] in parte alcuna un poco duro» (Conv. I III 2).

Bolger, Brian. "The Impact of Social Movements on Political Parties : Examining whether anti-austerity social movements have had an impact on social democratic political parties in Ireland and Spain, 2011-2016." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-280758.

Abstract:
Research on social movements has traditionally addressed issues of movement emergence and mobilisation, paying little attention to their outcomes and consequences. Moreover, despite research on the political consequences of social movements accelerating in recent years, much has been left under researched, no more so than the impact social movements have on one of the most important actors in liberal democracies: political parties. This paper extends social movement research by examining whether social movements have an impact on political parties and under what conditions impact is more likely to take place. The empirical analysis, investigating whether anti-austerity social movements have had an impact on social democratic parties in Ireland and Spain during the years 2011 to 2016, suggests that the relationship between social movements and political parties is both under-theorised and under-researched, and mistakenly so. The paper finds that while parties are more likely to be influenced by social movements when certain conditions are present, social movements can also have unintended impacts on parties. Ultimately, this paper encourages research on political parties, and particularly research on party change, to pay greater attention to social movements and for social movement research to pay greater attention to political parties.

Abstract:
The chapter aims to present an in-depth study of the factors influencing mobile commerce adoption. The authors analyze the influence of Mobile use experience, ICT ownership, Mobile affinity and Mobile Commerce compatibility in the m-commerce adoption decision. After identifying the key drivers of Mobile shopping adoption, the second part of the chapter presents an empirical study of the Spanish market. Results based on a sample of 470 Mobile users show that Mobile affinity, ICT ownership, and m-shopping compatibility are positive key drivers of M-shopping adoption. Mobile use experience has no significant influence on m-shopping adoption. This chapter will give managers and students insight into the Mobile Commerce industry and the different factors that influence m-commerce adoption. In addition, these factors can be applied to the specific context of the Spanish market.

Abstract:
Ana M. Guillén and Sergio González Begega address the crisis management strategies of Spain’s long-lasting recession and its associated protracted period of austerity. The Spanish economy enjoyed two decades of very intense expansion prior to the onset of the recession in 2008. That expansion was, nonetheless, unsustainable. Hence Spain went into a profound crisis with harsh social and employment consequences. Youth unemployment became excessive. The analysis of the overall policy responses to the recession and the reforms of the social protection system indicate a trajectory aimed unequivocally at regaining fiscal balance and appeasing the markets, while tending to growing social need remained a secondary objective. The outcome has been a substantive increase in financial hardship and socio-economic insecurity, borne principally by the lowest income quintile and by some active age population groups, such as single parents, immigrants, the unemployed, and, indirectly, children.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the concept of m-government and its implications for both citizens and public institutions. Although m-government is currently in an initial phase of development, its potential in the relationship between the public sector and the citizen is obvious because of, for example, the large number of mobile phone users among the public. In addition, the development of m-government initiatives generates a good number of bene?ts for the public sector that operates it as well as for the public, who experience improved accessibility to electronic public services. Because of this, this chapter analyses m-government initiatives developed by the Zaragoza City Council (Spain) in order to describe its bene?ts, implications for the relationship between the City Council and the citizen, and the future perspectives of these initiatives. We have speci?cally chosen a country like Spain due to the fact that mobile telephone usage is widespread and, at the same time, local government level has been chosen as the citizen participates more in the relationship with the public sector when it is at the local level.

Abstract:
Chapter 1, “Spanish Democracy and 15-M,” explores the political opportunities provided by the historical, cultural, and economic context in which the movement emerged. It argues that translating economic grievances into sustained mobilization and protest requires the concerted effort of collective actors, as the variance in levels of mobilization across different European countries similarly affected by the crisis/austerity shows. It shows how in Spain one of the key strategies of the 15-M movement was to contest hegemonic narratives about the inevitability of the crisis and austerity, and the necessity of passing the costs of private bank bailouts onto the public. By framing the “democratic deficit” (i.e., the corrupt and uncaring political class) as responsible for both the crisis and its effects, the movement provided a powerful impetus for mobilization against both the economic-financial crisis and the legitimation crisis of “really existing” democracy. This ability to mobilize counter-hegemonic narratives helps explain different collective responses to similar material and political contexts; in other words, it helps make sense of why effective contestation can be found in some contexts (e.g., Spain) but not in others hit equally as hard (e.g., Ireland).

Full text
Abstract:
Laser tomography is an optical diagnostic technique based on multiangular absorption spectroscopy. The technique allows the rapid measurement of both species concentration and temperature throughout a 2-D or 3-D nonuniform flow field. This is accomplished by measuring absorption along M equally spaced parallel beams and N equally spaced angles, forming an M × N data set from which the property field (temperature and/or concentration) is reconstructed. The reconstruction is achieved by using Fourier transform, convolution, or maximum entropy techniques. Measurements of OH radical concentration and translational temperature have been carried out in an axisymmetric premixed methane/air flame, using a single measurement angle. The technique has now been extended to a six-angle system, where simultaneous measurements can be made at all six angles at repetition rates up to 10 kHz. Data have been obtained on the dynamics and the 3-D structure of large eddies formed in an ethane/air turbulent diffusion flame. The frequency of eddy formation is controlled by introducing fluctuations into the fuel stream, using a loudspeaker. Formation, shedding, and breakup of eddies, marked by the soot particles formed in the flame, can be observed in detail using the laser tomography technique.
