Abstract:
We study the weighted Banach spaces of vector-valued holomorphic functions defined on an open and connected subset of a Banach space. We use linearization results on these spaces to get conditions which ensure that a functionfdefined in a subsetAof an open and connected subsetUof a Banach spaceX, with values in another Banach spaceE, and admitting certain weak extensions in a Banach space of holomorphic functions can be holomorphically extended in the corresponding Banach space of vector-valued functions.

Abstract:
WhenXis a compact Hausdorff space andEis a real Banach space there is a considerable literature on extremal properties of the spaceC(X,E)of continuousE-valued functions onX. What happens if the Banach spaces in which the functions onXtake their values vary overX? In this paper, we obtain some extremal results on the section spaceΓ(π)and its dualΓ(π)*of a real Banach bundleπ:ℰ→X(with possibly varying fibers), and point out the difficulties in arriving at totally satisfactory results.

Abstract:
This thesis derives the theory of distributions, starting with test functions as a basis. Distributions and their derivatives will be analysed and exemplified. Schwartz functions are introduced, and the Fourier transform of Schwartz functions is analysed, creating the basis for Tempered distributions on which we also analyse the Fourier transform. Weak derivatives and Sobolev spaces are defined, and from the Fourier transform we define Sobolev spaces of non-integer order. The theory presented is applied to an initial value problem with a derivative of order one in time and an arbitrary differentiation operator in space, and we take a look at conditions for well-posedness under different differnetiation operators and present some minor results. The Riesz representation theorem and the Lax--Milgram theorem are presented in order to offer a different perspective on the results from the initial value problem.

Bundy, Dallin J. "Magical Realism and the Space Between Spaces." DigitalCommons@USU, 2012. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1309.

Abstract:
Magical realism comes from Franz Roh, a german art historian and critic, who first used the term to describe the Post-Expressionism movement in visual art. His seminal writings and definitions on Post-Expressionism, then known as magical realism, were translated into Spanish and made available to Latin America in the mid twentieth century. Authors like Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel Garcia Marquez adopted Roh's writings and re-appropriated magical realism into literary art, and from there the new genre proliferated through the Latin American Boom and magical realism in literary fiction reached global recognition, inspiring authors across the world to take it up and continue the tradition into the present.

Abstract:
Today’s cities are built and shaped with a large inequality in how the space is distributed between different vehicles and way of transportation. Parking located along roads only function as storage for cars. Streets have become walk-through paths lacking identity. The focus lies on parkings along roads and how we can turn some of them into something new. My graduation project is exploring how small changes at several different locations can bring the local spirit into the city, while creating a vibrant and dynamic cityscape.  The aim is to make the urban development to start from its grassroots and from there determine in which way we will change our cities. The goal is to redefine the public space in between the buildings, that today is used by motor vehicles, and to create something new and something that can enrich the city as a whole.

Hudson, Joanne. "Informal spaces creative (re)appropriations of urban space." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.591937.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst there exists a body of work concerning the nature of wastelands and derelict spaces - what I term 'informal spaces' - within human geography, urban studies architecture and planning literature, there have been few attempts to link these theories with spatial planning practices. Accordingly, responding to this lack of sustained empirical research, this thesis explores the relationships between spatial planning practices and the production, (re)production and use of 'informal spaces,' ultimately aiming to further our knowledge of these complex relationships. It considers the potential of such spaces to act as a standpoint from which critical perspective towards much urban planning and design can be generated. Furthermore, investigating whether such commonly derided spaces can be conceptualised as a rich resource for urban life. The thesis does this by analysing how four chosen case studies within Manchester and Salford are appropriated, modified, performed, and conceptualised. Following the selection of the case studies, utilising qualitative data obtained by ethnographic methods including walking, observation and photography, unstructured interviews and further ethnographic interviews whilst walking, the study examines the ways in which such spaces are used by a variety of publics. Further qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, the analysis of secondary sources including current planning documents and historical data, are investigated and subsequently analysed to build an accurate genealogy of the sites, understanding in detail the planning contexts and future visions that have produce and sustain them as 'informal.' Key themes focus on the temporalities of the planning process as well as the ways in which stalled timescales intersect with other temporalities of nature and of cultural practice, encouraging appropriation. The ordering and disordering processes that designate and transform these spaces, are also discussed. Finally, the multiple affordances, encouraged by periods of temporal suspension and associated processes of disordering, that promote a diverse array of practices and potentialities are analysed. This research also contributes to debates surrounding the spatiality of dereliction.

Boonbanjerdsri, Kimberlee. "Capsule homes : creating space within space." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72832.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2012.
Page 58 blank. Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 57).
Inspired by my final Studio IV project in 2010, the Capsule Hotel, and the growing demand for efficient housing due to overcrowding in developing cities, this thesis explores, examines and realizes the need for compact homes. The need of reducing a small living space to the bare necessities, whilst allowing consumers to quickly transform and personalize the function requires great understanding of space efficiency and construction methods. Realizing a carefully designed space is one thing, but actually understanding how or why it is put together in a particular way is another. In this day and age, architects tend to create with the intention of purely design and often forget to consider and fully understand how the pieces actually come together, often leaving such tasks to contractors to "work out". What would happen to the design industry if consumers were not only able to customize and assemble their own apartment furniture, but at the same time get involved in the design of their furniture units? How would this impact consumers as well as the industry? The driving force behind Capsule Homes is to design a product that will provide users with the everyday amenities that can be transformed and customized, whilst involving the consumers in the affordable construction process. My thesis acts as a design proposal for introducing a new method of designing and customizing living spaces, whilst involving the consumer in the process from ordering units to understanding the construction methods, to ultimately living in a customizable quarters. Based on my research and analysis, I will construct a 1/4-scale prototype of thoroughly designed, flat-pack, customizable furniture.

Yang, Feng. "Architecture, Virtual Space And Impossible Space." Thesis, KTH, Arkitektur, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-281401.

Full text
Abstract:
This project investigates how to design an architecture in a context of virtual space, and how to utilise the exclusive possibilities of the virtual context.  The main case study about the virtual space and impossible space is based on video games. After analysing the mechanism of building such 'impossible spaces' in various video games, this project conducted an experiment on designing several virtual spaces in the game engine, Unreal Engine 4, to investigate the differences between architecture in the real space and in the virtual space. In addition, another architecture experiment was conducted in an impossible space: a space where gravity is modified to be vertical to the surface of a triangle swept Mobius Strip. Walking in such a space offers an exclusive 'impossible' experience. Such an experience is possible to be presented by the manifestation of Unreal Engine 4.
