Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis aims at an analysis of various forms of cultural production and links with linguistic and politic realities in the Canadian Province Québec. The existence of a French-speaking Québec and its difference cannot be explained without considering “the rest of Canada” as a major factor. Identity references and images of history are seen as public expressions in journalistic, artistic, educational or other forms. The present relevance of historical facts, the specific usage of history, its heroes and its makers are of special interest in narratives operating at the intersection of public sphere and memory politics. Various sources were used in the process of research: film, literature, the press and politics. Special attention was given to history text books in English and French used for secondary level courses in Québec schools. In a number of conflicts the opponents were not on both sides of the language barrier representing „english“ and „french“ interests. One example studied is the case of the intricate relations between liberal political power in Ottawa and the conservative Catholic Church in Québec. At the same time, heterogeneous structures seem to be faded out in specific situations when powerful lines of separation are drawn. In critical situations solidarities are formed in Canada and Québec along the lines of language, religion, politics and ethnic background. As a result of the study it became clear that the separation of Québec from Canada would result not in two parts, Québec and “English Canada” but that the cohesion of the present federation would eventually dissolve into much smaller parts. It also became clear that there is an integral relation between the distinctness of a population with a catholic and French-speaking majority and the English monarchy present in America.

Abstract:

Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/4923.

Abstract:

Davies, James Quail. "A musical souvenir : London in 1829." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2005. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/244877.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis involves a 'thick description' of music and musical representation in a single year: 1829. The context for the study is London, although the city has been approached less as a metropolitan than as a cosmopolitan centre, a global capital with global significance. This is a cultural history of music presented as a montage of case studies formed around musical events. Cases have been selected both with the general contrast of the group and the variety of musical types available to the description in mind (concert music, or major and minor theatrical forms). The potential of each event to have meaning beyond itself (to be representative) has been a third consideration, since cases are discussed in terms of broader historical, political and cultural flows. Newspapers, playbills, manuscript scores, almanacs, handbills, memoirs, journals, diaries and other ephemera have been used both to locate and frame evidence. The montage of cut-outs, in other words, forms an ensemble of partial histories, a picture of the intricately textured life of musical London. Cases are as follows: the final performances of a castrato analysed in terms of the emergence of the biological sciences and shifts in the history of the voice; a danced Beethoven symphony discussed in terms of ballet and concert trends; a colonial melodrama dealt with from the perspective of the postcolonial critic; an exploration of how new ways of imagining the city relate to new ways of imagining symphonic discourse; female duet-singing approached in light of psychoanalysis and gender studies; and the exchange of a musical annual looked at in view of the anthropology and philosophy of the gift. The use of the appellation 'A Musical Souvenir' in the title gestures towards the emergence of the 'music-annual form' in 1829, and - related to this - an emerging awareness of what I call 'year-historical situatedness'.

Abstract:
Experience of Antarctica is unique and overwhelming and the phenomenon of the landscape and knowledge of its history continues to inspire artists and writers. Since Antarctica's discovery and exploration both before and during the Heroic Age; explorers, expeditioners, artists and writers have attempted to record and visualise Antarctica. In1982 international Antarctic programmes started to assist artists to travel to Antarctica with the intention of providing perceptive interpretations no longer attached to science or exploration. This practice-led research is the first project where a jeweller has explored and interpreted a personal experience of Antarctica to produce souvenir and jewellery objects. These objects reveal new interpretations of Antarctica that engage with the viewer through the recognisable personal jewellery and souvenir object. This research has produced new contemporary souvenir and jewellery objects by interpreting both personal photographs and re-examining the historic stories, photographs and representations of Antarctica. The bibliographic investigations of historical jewellery and souvenirs provided specific examples of historical personal mementos that are now displayed in museums. This research analyses the meaning of historical examples of souvenirs and jewellery and examines the way in which photography has been manipulated and used on hard media. Through this analysis and examination of historical examples the research focuses on studio-based experimentation with enamelling and contemporary technologies to establish the links enamelling has had with micromosaics and miniature painting. This practice-led research investigates new and innovative ways to interpret these historical techniques and draw on the notion of the souvenir. Thinking through the processes used in this research and retelling the personal experience of Antarctica, contemporary technologies are used to reimagine historical examples of tourist jewellery and personal souvenirs presenting a further understanding of Antarctica's significance both culturally and environmentally. The research not only provides an addition to the diverse range of interpretations of Antarctica it also explores the area of enamelling in contemporary jewellery and object making by contributing to the current revival of the tradition both locally and internationally. This research offers new experiences and knowledge through the investigation, experimentation, manufacture and installation of enamelled objects.

Abstract:

Toulouse 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011TOU30249.

Full text
Abstract:
Episodic memory supports acquisition, storage and recall of autobiographic memories experienced in a specific temporo-spatial context. Many parameters and particularly the emotional burden can modulate episodic memory formation and improve the anchoring of "one-shot learning" as it is the case in "flashbulb memories". The CA3 hippocampal area is specifically involved in this type of memory. The high content of zinc and now acknowledged presence of NMDA receptors at the postsynaptic level allow Mossy Fibers to play the role of a detonator responsible of the fast generation and storage of episodic memories into the CA3 recurrent network. We also showed that memory impairments induced by reversible inactivation of zinc and NMDA receptors may be compensated by spaced learning procedures resulting in a "spacing effect" phenomenon that is dependent of proteins expression in CA3. Although the implication of CA1 and CA3 hippocampal area is clearly established for the acquisition and storage of multimodal information, their role in memory recall is less clear. Using simultaneous reversible inactivations of CA1 and CA3 areas by a local anaesthetic, we showed that these regions are both involved in the recall of memories acquired 24h earlier and that each of them is sufficient for triggering the recall of a complete memory. Finaly, our last study focused on episodic memory impairments in a neurodegenerative syndrom : Alzheimer disease. A "fast" mouse model of amyloid pathology was designed by injecting an oligomeric solution of Aß1-42 peptide in the brain of wild type mice. 21 days after injection, mice showed long term memory impairments in the contextual fear conditioning paradigm. The effects of different treatments were compared using this model : memantin, a symptomatic treatment used in Humans and heavy metal chelators, clioquinol and a new drug, PA1637 were used. These chelators designed to reduce oxidative stress proved successful in reversing the disturbing effect induced by the amyloid pathology. PA1637 that proved less toxic and displayed greater efficacy than clioquinol, carries good curative potentialities as a lead treatment for Alzheimer's disease

Abstract:

Abstract:
Since the collapse of the USSR independent Ukraine has used politics and culture to define a separate national identity, in contrast to Russia. Through a performance studies lens I describe Kyiv's largest souvenir market, Andriyivsky Uzviz, and place it in the context of nationalism and cultural promotion. I draw on Conquergood who situates the performing of culture at the intersection of history and identity, and Kapchan who notes that markets are key sites where ethnic identity is defined within sociopolitical frameworks. While profit and customer demand are important to vendors in the Uzviz, Ukrainianness is consciously emphasized through their folk art items. Vendors wear national costume, sell "traditional" Ukrainian items, and explicitly identify as Ukrainian, not Russian. Through one Uzviz folk artist I illustrate vendors' use of folk arts to express Ukrainian cultural identity and show how the market is a microcosm of the larger nationalist movement in Ukraine.

Abstract:
An enquiry into the conception and making of 18th-century Venetian cityscapes collected as souvenirs by English travellers during the Grand Tour. These drawings and paintings are analysed as memorials of their authors’ pictorial practice, rather than as ‘finished’ pieces, in order to allow possible patterns of thought to emerge and to verify coincidences and differences with extant critical interpretations of these artworks seen in a historical context. This exploration of visual remembrance in relation to Venetian topography intends to shift the focus from consumption to the production of mnemonic cityscapes, while it considers repercussions in polity and the economy. Practices of contemporary English landscape painters are compared and contrasted to corroborate the visual analysis of Venetian pictorial souvenirs.

Abstract:
Amongst many of the varied outlets, literature has been chosen to portray the collective memories of the French Algerian people. This undefined community produced writers who were to reflect its ambiguity. If the literary works which came to the fore from 1830 to 1987 are analysed, four periods can be distinguished. As the Algerian conquest by the french progressed (1830-1847), new experiences and memories were being developed. These were based on the varied cultural backgrounds of the people and on the entirely new circumstances. The overall theme was that their new land could be both dangerous and promising. However from 1848 to 1895 their collective memories seem to consolidate irrespective of the conquest now completed. These new works emphasize the need for harmony despite their heterogenous backgrounds but violent riots (1864-1881) were to defy this viewpoint. From 1896 to 1954, the themes become more constant and allow the differentiation of two groups: "Algerians" - this literaly refers the french or Europeans-and the "natives", not easily integrated with the new "Algerians". Finally their long established memories are shattered by Algeria's war (1954- 1962). Yet this war initiates a new process of memorisation based on individuals and associations

Abstract:

Abstract:
The memory creates a predisposition to move towards the evanescent moments of an intense memory because it declares itself as a certain deviation related to time and space, referring to where we're located. After analyzing the powers of remembrance in terms of dealing with artistic practices, we proposed to demonstrate that the work of art correlated with perception teaches us to fully grasp a potential materiality that makes possible a new analysis of our sensitivities. Due to works of art being based on a tangible reality, it is often confused with the formal process of materials that can support them . In particular, thinking about the materiality, not by the reflection of the artist's work, but by our feeling, changes completely our apprehensions. By way of an unobtrusive indication, the intensive sensation of the body leads us to recognise all those things which have contributed to transmitting the emotions felt and to enriching our memory. The artist operates a presentification of his/her emotional state and explores the connections and the disjunctions between the senses, in order to find herself/himself in a rhythm of the duration, which only exists if she/he participates at the same time. we have probed into a profile of the materiality of memory, with a view considering the tangible possibility of an emotional state within the framework of our different experiences, as a force for artistic creation. We attempted to recognise the specificity of this study and paid particular attention to the « process of creation », because our approach starts with practical and theoretical conditions, which may be combined with issues of the memory in the field of art

Abstract:
The inhuman element in Djuna Barnes’s works has been widely acknowledged. So far the research has, however, concerned itself primarily with animality, thus neglecting the importance of things and thingliness in her texts. In this essay I outline a new way of approaching Barnes were things are taken into account as a vital element in her literary world, using theories on prostheses, fetishes and souvenirs. In Nightwood and four of the short stories, ”A Night Among the Horses”, ”Aller et Retour”, ”Cassation”, and ”The Grande Malade”, I examine clothing, interiors, collections, statues and dolls as objects that in different ways harbour meaning, dream, riddle, memory, history, longing and desire. The aim is not at translating these objects; my concern is not so much with what they mean, as how they mean; how they are used and thus how they interact with the characters.

This present thesis has as objective to investigate the significance attributed to the production and consumption of souvenirs in the city of Tiradentes- MG keeping in view the theory of the gift by Marcel Mauss. The research, in qualitative nature, was guided by a sociological view and a relational and interpretative anthropological view. In this work, I assume the interpretive perspective from the reality of the ideas of Geertz: In this way, I make it clear that more than presenting a reality given to all observers independent of their values, I present a version that owes much to the interaction with those interviewed in Tiradentes and in the district of Vitoriano Veloso, the “Bichinho”. The methodological strategy put into practice in this research utilized bibliographical revision, as well as participant observation, the semistructured interview and informal conversations. The use of a recorder, photographic camera, and a field diary constituted important techniques in the apprehension of valuable information, not always expressed discursively by those interviewed. Theoretically the thesis is valued by contributions that permit reflection about the idea of consumption as well as the practices of the consumers and producers of souvenirs, beyond the perspectives centered on the rational subject. The notion of the gift and total social fact, central to the thoughts of Marcel Mauss, guided in great part the apprehension of the reality throughout my stay as a researcher in Tiradentes. My interpretation of the interpretations built from interaction with those I interviewed point, among other things, to an ambiguous field and many meanings. In great part I believe that the different affiliations of the subjects in relation to the social structure are crucial in accounting for this variation. Varying the insertion of the subject in a determined social group also changes the associated significance of the souvenirs, in addition to other objects, such as those classified as craft-work. The theory of the gift by Mauss answers some of my questions. However, I recognized that it cannot account for the wide range of meanings attributed by the actors, notably those inserted in more individualized contexts. The understanding of the phenomenon of the consumption of souvenirs in Tiradentes by tourists permits going beyond the most simple ideas of a greedy subject consuming what he finds in tourist locations, being an act of classification and reality planning. New questions arise at the end of this research, causing continuity from a mature look concerning the touristic phenomenon and consumption.

Abstract:

Abstract:
From the 17th to the 20th century, the violent history of colonial relations has marked Puerto Rican autobiographical writing and made it the story of a nomadic I in search of an imaginary nation. The first chapter of this thesis analyses four autobiographical texts written during the Spanish rule of Puerto Rico: Infortunios de Alonso Ramírez (Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora), El jíbaro (Manuel Alonso), the memoirs of Alejandro Tapia y Rivera and the diary of Eugenio M. De Hostos. The second chapter studies the autobiographical memory of the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico in relation to US imperial propaganda of the time. It concentrates on the autobiographical novel El niño de arcilla (E. R. Chevremont). The third chapter studies the autobiographical novel Litoral (Luis Palés Matos), its many rewritings, and its search for the Afro-Caribbean and mythical roots of Puerto Rican identity. Our last chapter is a comparative study of two memoirs - La luna no era de queso (José L. González) and The Ladies' Gallery (Irene Vilar) - in the context of Puerto Rican nationalism. Poetic art, art of remembrance and of forgetting, art of rewriting and of constructing a cultural identity, Puerto Rican autobiographical writing operates as a bilingual archive where self-knowledge is defined not only by historical inquiry, but also by the necessity to construct a self-portrait or a mask which enables the I to merge with, or to be distinguished from, that Other who is the colonizer

Abstract:
Neuroanatomical and electrophysiological data place the thalamic Reuniens and Rhomboid nuclei as a key relay between the hippocampus (HP) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), two brain structures essential for memory. As such, the ReRh nuclei are thought to be involved in HP-mPFC interactions, supporting consolidation processes, and thus memory persistence. Using excitotoxic lesion, chemogenetic inactivation and cellular imaging approaches in various behavioral paradigms, we assessed the implication of the ReRh nuclei in memory processes, particularly consolidation. Our results show that the ReRh nuclei are necessary for offline consolidation of contextual fear memory in rats. A similar conclusion has been drawn from a previous study taxing spatial memory, another HP-dependent type of memory. Thus, the present data show that the necessity of the ventral midline thalamus to systems-level consolidation is not limited to a particular type of memory but could be more general

Abstract:
It is increasingly important for cities to attract visitors, potential new residents and businesses. Jönköping is one of the cities working with place marketing, a strategy that intends to mediate a positive image of the city, in order to accomplish just that. People often have a need to preserve the memory of a trip into something tangible. Anyone visiting Jönköping encounters a souvenir choice, much like the one in many other cities. Linked to the idea of positive place marketing, our work aims to investigate how we as product developers can create a product that en¬hances the image of Jönköping based on the thought that all residents are con¬sig¬nors. Accordingly, we develop three different products from the residents' own image of the city. Our research questions are: Based on the photographs, what image of Jönköping do the ambassadors mediate of their own city? As designers, what in Jönköping's history versus the image of Jönköping today, can we seize in order to give products for visitors a sense of authenticity? As designers, how can we use knowledge of place branding in the development of souvenirs? We performed interviews within three different aspects: history, souvenirs and place branding, all focused on the city of Jönköping. The interviews and a work-shop formed the basis for the further design process. This work has resulted in three products: the matchbox Det nya Jönköping i en historisk förpackning, highlights an important part in the city's history and becomes a conversation piece. Lek dig genom Jönköping want to show visitors what the city offers, and distinguish it from others, from the on-site. Detaljerna gör staden is an every¬day object and function can get residents to begin to discover the details of their own city. Through the use of knowledge and theories of place branding and souvenirs, we would argue that we have found a way to actually catch the residents' image of the city in a number of products. We also believe that it would be able to apply this type of project in other locations to create more authentic and at the same time innovative souvenirs.

Abstract:
The cinema was apparently invented, not as a technical instrument, but as a show for an audience. Yet, unlike the theatre, it requires darkness. Each spectator is taken back to his innermost being. What will the part of collective psychological effects and that of intimacy be when viewing the film ? That is the question we must consider all along our dissertation. To give it an answer, we first go over the work done by Institut de Filmologie psychologists as well as by the seventies metapsychologists of the cinema. After revealing what these works have in common-a portrayal of the viewer regressing to a fusion state-we propose that the viewer be partly engaged in the fiction film in an imaginary way, but knowing it. Eventually, what we assume has already been said by Schiller, when he described the aesthetic mode of the pathetic. The spectator, even when mesmerised or tuned up by the film, knows he is distinct from it. In a second section, we distinguish between too flows of psychological effects. On the one hand, what we name effectuation, draws the landscape of Efficiency, when it rouses a part of our psyche receptive to identifications and triggers a cognitive and emotional dynamic. On the other hand, affectuation brings together Chance effects that appear as reliefs of effectuation processes (when a film impresses us inordinately) or in their interruption (when images pull us out of the diegesis). Finally, we attempt to answer this question : what will the aftereffects of these psychological processes be once the show is over ? We, then, distinguish two kinds of film memories : one generic (story memory) and one specific (composed of image memories)
