Abstract:
This thesis articulates a methodology that can be applied to the analysis and design of underlying organisational structures and processes that will consistently and effectively address ‘wicked problems’ (the most difficult class of problems that we can conceptualise: problems which consist of ‘clusters’ of problems; problems within these clusters cannot be solved in isolation from one another, and include sociopolitical and moral-spiritual issues (Rittel and Webber 1973)) in forestry. This transdisciplinary methodology has been developed from the perspective of institutional economics synthesised with perspectives from ecological economics and system dynamics. The institutionalist policymaking framework provides an approach for the explicit development of holistic policy. An illustrative application of this framework has been applied to the wicked problem of forestry in southern Tasmania as an example of the applicability of the approach in the Australian context. To date all attempts to seek solutions to that prevailing wicked problem set have relied on non-reflexive, partial and highly reductionist thinking. A formal assessment of prevailing governance and process arrangements applying to that particular forestry industry has been undertaken using the social fabric matrix. This methodology lies at the heart of the institutionalist policymaking framework, and allows for the systematic exploration of elaborately complex causal links and relationships, such as are present in southern Tasmania. Some possible attributes of an alternative approach to forest management that sustains ecological, social and economic values of forests have been articulated as indicative of the alternative policy and management outcomes that real-world application of this transdisciplinary, discursive and reflexive framework may crystallise. Substantive and lasting solutions to wicked problems need to be formed endogenously, that is, from within the system. The institutionalist policymaking framework is a vehicle through which this endogenous creation of solutions to wicked problems may be realised.

Azevedo, Laura Novo de. "Including Young People's Values in Heritage Conservation Policy: the case of Pelotas in southern Brazil." Thesis, Oxford Brookes University, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.490499.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the inclusion of young people in current heritage conservation policy. The investigation is founded on the premise that, despite internationally agreed conservation principles recommending more inclusive policies and a body of literature highlighting the importance of cultural and social diversity for sustainable development, most heritage conservation policy and practice at the local level is still elitist and informed by the values of only a few groups in society. Many groups therefore, including young people, do not recognise the official (or listed) heritage as theirs and feel they have nothing to contribute to the process of heritage protection. The situation of young people is aggravated by the fact that the group is usually regarded as the future generation, a state that undermines their visibility as social actors of today with the same rights as adults to participate in policy making processes. The initial stage of the research involved the identification of the contextual framework based on the analysis of international policy and Brazilian legal and administrative structures influencing local heritage conservation and the theoretical underpinnings for the investigation developed from a review of the literature on the themes of heritage conservation, heritage value, young people and participation. The initial stage informed the design of an analytical framework, which is sensitive to cultural and social contexts, for the investigation of inclusiveness in heritage conservation. A qualitative approach through a multi-method strategy was adopted to provide an in-depth examination of the research problem in the city of Pelotas, Brazil. The applied research involved three methodological stages: I) the identification of what young people value as heritage and how they value it; 2) the investigation of to what extent local policy respond to the values of young people by directly including them into policy (assigned value), by generating practical benefits for the group (instrumental value), and by providing avenues for the group's participation (institutional value); and 3) the consideration of a creative and dialogical participatory approach, involving adults and young people, as a tool for increasing institutional value. Together, the contextual and theoretical frameworks and the results from the in depth study in Pelotas are used to propose theoretical and practical recommendations and strategies for the development of more inclusive heritage conservation policies. These are seen as starting points for bridging the gap between the exclusive character of heritage conservation and the current requirements for social and cultural inclusion.

Lundquist, David Jeffrey. "Behavior and movement of southern right whales: effects of boats and swimmers." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/5909.

Abstract:
Guidelines for sustainable swim-with tourism for large whales are not welldeveloped, as researchers have focused on delphinids. Nations that signed the Convention on Biological Diversity at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 are obligated to consider sustainable use principles when allowing new ecotourism activities, yet the fast-growing worldwide swim-with-whales industry is lacking the research needed to create successful management guidelines that can be implemented by local communities. From September to November of 2005 and July to October of 2006, I collected movement and behavioral state data for southern right whales in proximity of swimmers at Península Valdés, Argentina. Whales were observed before, during, and after a series of directed interactions with swimmers. I quantified the behavioral and movement effects relative to group composition of whales (mother/calf pairs, juveniles or adult/mixed groups) and activity level of swimmers. Group composition had a significant effect on the response of whales to swimmers. Swimmer activity level did not substantially affect the reaction of whales. Resting and socializing activities significantly decreased and traveling activities significantly increased when boats approached and when swimmers entered the water. Resting and socializing bout length in the presence of swimmers decreased to less than a third of the length of bouts when swimmers were not present. Whales swam faster, reoriented more often, and followed a less linear path during interactions. Effects were greater for mother/calf pairs than juveniles, while mixed adult/juvenile groups showed no significant changes in behavior or movement. The initial reaction of whales to the approach of the boat and the entry of swimmers into the water was a good predictor of the magnitude of effects on the behavior and movement patterns of the whale. Increased levels of activity are a concern for the whales that are resting and not feeding in this area. To provide quality resource management guidelines for this activity, additional research is needed to determine long-term effects of boat and swimmer activities on the behavior of whales. It is also important to obtain energetic data for right whales to determine the magnitude of impacts.

Lisenbee, William J. "The Crossroads of Eternality and Southern Distortion: An Analysis of Flannery O'Connor's Fiction." FIU Digital Commons, 2010. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/320.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this analysis was to explore how social and cultural values in the South determine meaning in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction. Since Christianity is the predominant religion in the South, only O’Connor’s stories with obvious Christian themes and characters were chosen. Several modern literary theories, along with select criticism of O’Connor’s literature, were used to investigate the fluidity of words and their corresponding meanings in O’Connor’s fiction. Although Flannery O’Connor’s language and depictions are often open-ended, there were definite bounds located, namely, Biblical allusions and Southern cultural standards. These findings demonstrated that the language in O’Connor’s fiction is neither an arbitrary system nor is it driven by the author’s history or intent. It is, therefore, recommended that a cultural approach be applied to Flannery O’Connor’s literature if the goal is to comprehend her religious themes.

Abstract:
During our archaeological surveys in the upper reaches of the Palpa valleys, at the western slope of the Andes, we identified and registered a large number of settlements of the Paracas culture, most of them dating to the Middle Paracas(550-350 BC) and Late Paracas (350-200 BC) period. Of special interest are several large sites with stone buildings with circular ground plans, similar to the shape of a flower. The center of these architectural complexes consists of acircular or crescent shaped sunken patio, around which are arranged D-shaped enclosures with small terraces in front of the straight wall.Through our large scale excavations in Cutamalla, one of the largest and best preserved settlements in the area, we were able to document in detail this new type of architecture and to define its formal and constructive features, as well as its cultural affiliation and the activities carried out within the structures. All the data recovered so far indicate that these circular structures have to be considered as a new architectural type of the Late Paracas period. The distribution of this new architectural pattern is limited to a part of the highlands of Lucanas, Ayacucho, and, as far as we know, seems to be unique in the southern highlands of Peru.

Walker, Lauren L. "Boiotian black figure floral ware : a re-analysis of the Southern style with an introduction to floral groups from Halíartos." Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85212.

Full text
Abstract:
Black Figure Floral Ware is an understudied style of pottery which was produced in Boiotia and the nearby regions of Euboia and Phokis during the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E. Floral Style vases are painted with compositions formed predominantly of palmettes and lotuses rendered in black gloss without the incised details which are typically associated with Black Figure pottery. The corpus of Boiotian Floral Ware is divided into two sub-styles: the Northern Style and the Southern Style. The Northern Style is thought to have been produced in the area North and West of the Kopais while the Southern Style was chiefly produced in the Thespiai-Thebes and the Tanagra regions. To date our understanding of the development of the Southern Style has been based on systematically excavated floral evidence from Rhitsona (Ancient Mykalessos) and the Thespian Polyandrion and random vases from the Skhimatari Museum. Previous research incorrectly identified Tanagra as the primary source of Southern Floral Ware with little regard for Thebes as an important producer. Newly discovered ceramic evidence from four Theban cemeteries now indicates that Thebes was in fact a major producer of Floral Ware. The excavations have brought to light new floral groups and have provided evidence which indicates that vases previously identified as Tanagran or Euboian are more likely to be Theban.
This dissertation chronicles the morphological and iconographical development of the Southern Floral Style according to the systematically excavated floral vases from Rhitsona and the Thespian Polyandrion. Rim and base profiles from the Thespian Polyandrion, Thebes and Haliartos are classified and floral motifs from datable contexts are assigned to types. The evidence indicates that it is the overall shape of the vase and the decorative details within the compositions, rather than a specific rim or base type or compositional layout that identifies regional differences, if any. Newly excavated vases from Haliartos are presented not only to provide a contrast for the Southern Style Floral Ware, particularly in terms of their shape, but also in order to establish a bridge between this dissertation and any future studies of the Northern Style Floral Ware.

Pert, Heather Anne. "Desired Future Conditions of Riparian Areas on Southeastern National Forests." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27994.

Full text
Abstract:
Development of goals (desired future conditions (DFCs)) based on substantial public involvement is critical to the success of ecosystem management on public lands. I evaluated DFCs of riparian areas on national forests in the southern Appalachian mountains and evaluated a process for involving the public in development of DFCs for riparian areas on the Jefferson National Forest. First, I identified the major components, structures, and functions that are essential to riparian health through a literature review. Second, I examined how the key components, structures, and functions identified in the literature review were addressed in the DFCs and standards and guidelines for eight southeastern national forest management plans. In reviewing forest plans, I found a clear shift from emphasizing water quality in older forest plans to a more comprehensive incorporation of the values and functions of riparian areas in more recent plans. Riparian attributes included in DFCs varied widely and disparities between DFCs for forest plans and measurable criteria in the standards and guidelines often occurred. Finally, I designed, tested, and evaluated a public involvement process that identified public values for use in the development of DFCs for riparian areas on the Jefferson National Forest. I used a combination of alternative dispute resolution techniques and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a participatory decision-making tool. I used surveys before and after the riparian meetings to evaluate the effectiveness of the public involvement process. Survey respondents generally were middle-aged, well-educated, high-income males who were long-time residents of the area. Riparian meeting participants indicated that the DFC for riparian areas on the JNF should strongly emphasize water quality and quantity, protection of riparian-dependent species and their habitats, and maintenance of the integrity of the relationship between riparian areas and the surrounding environment. Participants indicated recreational and commodity uses of riparian areas could occur as long as they did not negatively affect the other, more highly valued characteristics of riparian areas. Participants felt that the meetings were fair, that diverse interests were represented, that they had enough information to participate in the process, and that it was a wise use of their time.

Hughes-d'Aeth, Armand Henry. "The role of teacher values in the mediation of ESL innovation programmes : two case studies in a Southern African context." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1995. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10021598/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines teacher personal and cultural presage variables within a black South African cultural dimension. I seek to understand what effects value variables have on the mediation of change and to know why these sometimes act as barriers to the implementation of classroom innovation - in this instance, a communicative language teaching approach. Finally, I itemize the implications of value change for the professional development of teachers following ELT INSET programmes and set out a series of practical proposals on the basis of my conclusions. I argue the need for congruence between teacher values and values inherent in a CLT approach and discuss ways in which value redeployment occur. I outline acceptance of change in terms of a theoretical construct of 'practicality ethics' and argue that personal values must be examined within black South African cultural dimensions of allocentriccollectivism, high uncertainty avoidance and high power distance. I analyze paradigms of western education and review the principles underlying a CLT approach. I link my analysis to the requirements of the DET's English language syllabus and contrast concepts of teacher roles and classroom power relationships in traditional African pedagogy with those of a CLT approach in terms of 'ideal' and 'indigenous' mediational operators, and I examine dissonances between the two. A narrative-descriptive background account of two case studies is given through the use of life histories, diaries, documents and interviews to support an itemistic cross-case analysis of cultural and personal values held in relation to black South African cultural dimensions. I then analyse a series of videoed lessons and I provide a descriptive overview of classroom interaction patterns. Classroom events are discussed in terms of types of teacher questions asked, turn allocations, wait-time and power-relationships, class participation and ritualization, and teacher evaluation, repair and feedback. I conclude that African societies emphasize collective moral values whereas societies geared towards a Western-urbanscientific- technological paradigm stress idiocentricprofessional values. I do not assert that individuals rigidly conform to this bipolarity but application of either or both value systems lie along a continuum with consequent effect on classroom events.

Ayers, Gillian. ""I could be a father, but I could never be a mother" : values and meanings of women's voluntary childlessness in Southern Alberta." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Dept. of Sociology, 2012, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/3226.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the experiences, beliefs, motivations, and perceived costs and benefits of women who are childless by choice in Southern Alberta. I investigate the naturalized and normalized understandings of femininity, motherhood, and citizenship more broadly, and what this means for voluntarily childless women. Using data collected from 21 semi-structured qualitative interviews, I draw on a Foucauldian feminist framework to explore the narratives of voluntarily childless women, and, through subsequent examination, to explore issues of choice, responsibility, pronatalism, identity, and stigma. I first consider how the women negotiate their childbearing decisions in light of competing pronatalist, capitalist, and cultural demands. I then focus on techniques of identity construction by highlighting the negotiations of voluntarily childless women in relation to the physical, emotional, and social costs and benefits of their reproductive decisions. Finally, I explore the varying sources of pressure and support that impact women’s experience in daily life.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Public Management and Planning))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Unless Africans and their leaders make a concerted effort to rid themselves of the harmful legacy of colonial spirituality by adopting new motives for living, entering into new relationships with themselves on the plane of beneficial values, Africa will not be able to escape the social, environmental, political and economic afflictions that currently beset her. The colonial forces that burst into Africa with violence from minds bent on foreign conquest were primarily driven by an ethos of covetousness that has come to characterize the existing international order. Stealing, not only of natural resources has continued side by side with the denuding of the very souls of people – as has happened so successfully in Africa – of their humanity. There is evidence that human existence has been beleaguered and governed by an unviable microphysical framework (mindset and spirituality). In the midst of what appears to be a bewilderingly dynamic, turbulent and complex world, this spirituality looms large, gaining a stronghold resulting in disconnectedness among self-worshipping humans and their environment. We now live in a world governed by a distructive innate iniquity that produces overwhelming inequity among humans and unprecedented damage in the natural environment that sustains us. This study draws from and connects the evidence provided by ancient history with current macro-physical endeavours to demonstrate that this micro-physicality still holds sway, albeit under various manifestations. Having been in a state of war with itself and its living environment, humanity has reached what observers have acknowledged as a crossroads. In the violence that has engulfed all humans since time immemorial, as evidenced in the co-existence of poverty and affluence, pandemics driven by a wide variety of illnesses, huge disparities in wealth within and between national economies, energy and environmental depletion and degradation that have earned us the unprecedented crisis of global warming, this crossroads has made itself very present. A particular kind of mentality and spirituality has taken us to this point. It is a spirituality that is obviously devoid and incapable of producing beauty of harmony and communion among us irrespective of our diversity, whether in race, culture, knowledge discipline or geographic space. The macro-physical condition we are experiencing cannot be viewed in isolation from the spirituality that produced it. We are now in an unsustainable world that must have been the fruit of an unsustainable spirituality. The answers to our global dilemma must fundamentally be sought not in any new technologies that emanate from the same mindset, but in a renewed mind and in a different pattern of spirituality. This study probes the dominant world mindest that directed the globally pervasive Western civilization and reviews some major historical and cultural trends that, it argues, have brought humanity to the zenith of its “world-hunt”-culture. This is a “world- hunt” of self-mutilation that manifested itself in Europe, the near-east, Asia and Africa over more than four millennia ago. The deforestation, land degradation, oppression of the poor, hunger, hatred that drives terrorist attacks, climate changes that drive natural disasters and the loss of species, are all the unmistakable bitter fruit of such a culture. It is a culture characterized and propelled by the absence of what this study coins as “aesthetic relational values”. This dominant mindset has strewn all over our globe various rule-based governance institutions characterized by an ethos of central control, manipulating people’s lives for self-centred gain. Though many of these institutions come in various garbs of apparent benevolence, faith-based, trade-based, knowledge/science-based and political governance bodies, all are adherents of the same worldview that is firmly grounded in a merciless and destructive pantheistic, and nature-worship belief system traceable to ancient Egypt. Many of these institutions, today, publicly claim to be proponents of sustainable development, the eradication of poverty and peace among the nations of the world, yet they are still clinging, esoterically, to a cosmological perspective of nature-worship that glorifies self-worship and disregards the well-being of others. The study contrasts this dominant spirituality with the Afrocentric one based on a knowledge system that propounds a belief in a compassionate and merciful Creator-God who is the source of all nature, including the human family, as illustrated in the daily lives of amaMbo peoples whose geographic origins are traced to ancient Ethiopia. As the former continues to make a nonentity of the Creator-God, Africans, realizing the spiritual bankruptcy of a self-glorification ethic that has polarised the people and ravaged their continent through rule-based institutions, are returning, in large numbers, to this knowledge system of their ancient fathers on which their social institutions of shared and consensus-based decision-making and governance, from the basic social unit as the family, to national political relations, were founded. In several encounters these patterns of spiritualities have produced unsavoury outcomes. In the Cape’s more-than-a-century long, bitter and protracted encounter between a branch of amaMbo called amaXhosa, that began with the seventeenth century arrival of the Western “world-hunt” culture through the Calvinist Dutch East India Company traders, Africa and the entire world have been provided, simultaneously, with indisputable evidence of the destructiveness of self-indulgent living on the one hand and the efficacy, on the other, of a relational aesthetic as a viable alternative out of the humanitarian and environmental crises that confront our globe. Views and principles regarding the harmonious living of life on earth have been advocated by many a great leader since antiquity. They have been vindicated in the lives of ancient Israelite patriarchs such as Abraham and Moses, who led his kinsmen out of the Egyptian bondage that lasted over four centuries; in the life of Tolstoy, who chose to be excommunicated from a society that regarded these principles with disdain; to that of Gandhi, on whom Tolstoy was a tremendous influence, and effectively applied them to unshackle a whole nation from British subjugation; and Dostoevsky, Tolstoy’s compatriot, who first referred to these as “aesthetic views”. These relational principles were embedded in the lifestyle of ancient Israel, lived and advocated later by the Jewish Rabbi called Jesus, whose very own people chose to shamefully murder Him rather that accept His teachings. These principles were taught, practised and handed down to His followers to influence humanity as never before. In their ancient setting these principles clashed with those of the pagan lifestyle of Egypt, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome, which culturally shaped the Western civilization that pervades our globe. The results were centuries of enslavements, dispossessions and persecutions. In the course of history pagan beliefs crept in and mingled with orthodox Jewish rites and worship, producing an adulterated Christianity and a plethora of what are known today as nature-based religions, which still uphold and advocate the individual gods to whom honour and worship is due rather than the Creator in the Hebrew and Afrocentric cosmologies. This study traces the effect of the absence of these relational values on the quality of the life of nations and their leaders. A remarkable trend and pattern characterized by self-mutilative living emerged among all such nations and people. Their efficacy and mutual beneficence, on the other hand, was unmistakable in societies such as that of amaXhosa, in their pre-colonial state in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. As all of nature “groans” under the human self-mutilation caused by the impoverished spirituality in aesthetic relational values, this study argues that salvation lies in ibuyambo, the recalling of these under-appreciated relational values, and in ensuring the re-education of ourselves and our future leaders in them. The focus of the study is what these values are, the effect of their absence, how different they are to what are known as “social capital”, how they have been manifested and preserved in ancient African institutions such as the weekly memorial day of rest – the Sabbath in the creation narrative – in the lives of some individuals and people on our planet, particularly Africans and amaMbo, and the benefits they derived from respecting them. A vital observation in this study is that social systems that are driven by the motive of individual, corporate or national self-exaltation are invariably rooted in strife and discention. The conclusion is drawn that these under-appreciated relational values, aesthetic relational values, are not only a vital ingredient to the quest for and in all known facets of sustainability in development efforts, they hold the key to unlock the door to the mystery of “harmony” that has proven so elusive to individuals, families, communities, societies, nations and their governance systems. The study concludes, with Dostoevsky, that aesthetic relational values contain “a guarantee of tranquility” for all humanity and the natural environment that sustains them. The restoration, not only by all of Africa, of the lost spirituality of aesthetic relational values cherished by their ancient forebears, is key to the renewal of our world.

The restoration, not only by all of Africa, of the lost spirituality of aesthetic relational values cherished by their ancient forebears, is key to the renewal of our world. op ons globale dilemma moet fundamenteel nie in enige nuwe tegnologieë gesoek word wat uit hierdie selfde geestesingesteldheid voortvloei nie, maar in ’n hernude sienswyse en in ’n ander spiritualiteitspatroon.

Fairburn, William A. "A re-interpretation of the physiographic evolution of the southern end of the Vale of York from the mid-Pleistocene to Early Holocene." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6259/.

Full text
Abstract:
The recognition and mapping of planar terraces on the York Moraine led to the belief that these were shorelines of the Late Devensian proglacial Lake Humber and the hypothesis that the progressive demise of the lake was recognisable from stillstands. To test this, landform mapping was initiated across the Vale of York and the flanks of the Wolds between Pocklington and Hessle to identify and record planar land surfaces, which had distinct topographic boundaries resulting from erosional and depositional processes. The results of this study confirmed the early shoreline mapping and identified strandlines, at lower elevations, down to a terminal lake level of 5.0 m OD. Erosional and deposition effects associated with both stands and retreat stages of Lake Humber have deposited a sand mantle up to 2.0 m thick on the southern face of the York moraine from transgressive and regressive shorelines. In addition, two sets of alluvial fans, originating from dry valleys in the Wolds from frost-fractured Chalk formation were recognised. The older set were terraced by shorelines of Lake Humber, in contrast to the younger set, which clearly post-dated Lake Humber. Corroborative evidence for the existence of the shorelines has been provided by photography and LIDAR imagery. An additional objective was to establish a chronology for key mapped landforms based on luminescence dating of sand samples from shoreline deposits and younger fluvial events. To achieve this 18 sand samples were collected and dated. The main conclusions of the research are that the older periglacial alluvial fans are from an earlier cold glacial period (possibly MIS 8) and that the younger Late Devensian (MIS 2) glaciation retreated north of the York Moraine about 17 ka BP prior to the main phase of impounding Lake Humber. The dating of this event conforms with OSL dating of c. 15.9 ka and c. 15.2 ka obtained from sand samples on the York Moraine. The existing two stage model of proglacial Lake Humber has been revised and mapped shorelines, of this lake, now define an 8-stage regressive decline model for Lake Humber, from a high level Stage 1 at 42 m OD down to a low level (partly fluvial) Stage 8 at 5.0 m OD. Mapping has also revealed that the decline sequence appears to have been punctuated by short-lived, modest rises in lake level from oscillations of the blocking North Sea Ice Lobe. It has been established that the southward slope of the Vale of York is testimony to Holocene flooding and not to isostasy. The landform mapping also indicates that the gravels forming the Crockey Hill ‘esker’ probably originated as a fan delta from a drainage gap in the York Moraine, south of York, and that terraces in the Aire and Calder valleys are coeval with stands of Lake Humber.

Williams, Richmond Paul Bowen. "Towards a strategic transcultural model of leadership that enhances Koinonia in urban Southern Africa." Thesis, Full-text available online as a .pdf file, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23874.

Full text
Abstract:
The research conducted was done on the basis of providing an initial platform or starting point for insight and discussion into what a strategic transcultural model of leadership might look like which was relevant to the early 21st Century Christian context in the cities of Southern Africa. A strategic transcultural leader is essentially a transformational leader who exhibits an ability beyond the norm in being able to cross socio-political barriers and thus inspiring the multicultural dynamic, while also honouring the individual cultures represented. In order to study strategic transcultural leadership models a strong leadership angle was taken, which employed investigating six leaders, three political and three Christian as to the structures, styles, values, transcultural abilities and Christian/political beliefs and/or philosophies they employed. The thesis poses the problem of urban unrest in the cities of Southern Africa. The problem of an influx into the cities, of the many different ethnicities and tribes from throughout Southern Africa and the pressures this has caused is briefly alluded to. This problem has been further exacerbated in South Africa by the arrival of many peoples from throughout Africa, south of the Sahara seeking their fortune without having to leave the African Subcontinent, and in Zimbabwe by the political policies of the Zimbabwean government, over land and in clearing away her unapproved urban high-density housing, and her informal business and white farming sectors of the economy. With these issues in mind, there is a need for strategic transcultural leadership to address these and other issues of unrest. The examples of Mandela and De Klerk as transformational leaders, inspire hope, that the vacuum of strategic transcultural leadership seen in Africa at large and specifically in relation to Southern Africa can be met, as is noted by the progress made in recent years in the arena of transformational leadership which the Group of eight and the United Nations and others allude to. While this is true, there are still problems in relation to the political decision-making within South African, as seen by Mbeki’s stance in the past on HIV-AIDS, and Zimbabwe’s woes. The stage is set from a missiological and historical perspective by looking at multicultural models of leadership in the Early Church with specific reference to Paul and the Antiochan model he used as a prototype. The Jerusalem Church is mentioned as a bi-cultural model, which has significant use outside of large urban environs. However it was the Pauline-Antiochan model that provided a platform, in the later use of a synthetic-semiotic model, to deduce or synthesis a transcultural model. Paul’s model of leadership was analysed specifically in relation to the five elements already noted (structures, styles, etc.) and is particularly useful as a model as Paul himself provides firstly an insight into a man of bi-cultural heritage yet someone who was empire-conscious. Paul was able to uphold both the cultural distinctive or uniqueness of both the Greek and Jew (noting Paul’s use of both Hebraic and Hellenistic styles of the diatribe for example) as well as the universal, in that he was empire-conscious which played into his Kingdom perspective. Secondly he provides a reasonable grounds for understanding that if the belief system of the individual is changed on one of its most fundamental levels – allegiance – then given time the macro-cultural identity of a nation, even empire can be significantly altered. He was able to do this primarily because the Graeco-Roman Empire had a common linguafranca in Greek, and the Christian community – as the followers of the Way became known as – had an ethos of reconciliation, enhancing the multicultural and one also of inclusivity (for example a worship style that encompasses both Jewish and local expressions) enhancing the particular. In declaring the One God of Israel and Jesus Christ – Messiah, as the only true Kyrios, Paul replaced the Emperor and the whole Greek pantheon of the Gods with the one true God and Father of us all, and his one and only Son.< /p> The three political leaders – Moshoeshoe, Smuts and Mandela – and the three Christian leaders – Mutendi, Cassidy and Tutu – are investigated in terms of the five elements (structures, styles, values etc.) that comprise the model of leadership. Each of these leaders in turn made a lasting contribution to national and/or tribal change. After looking at the six leadership models an initial conceptual framework for a multicultural model of leadership is outlined. However, in order to bring significant current postmodern/neo-African/tribal/multicultural paradigms of thought and the associated socio-political forces and philosophies of the day, to bear on the evolving model, these were specifically highlighted and brought into the process of synthesizing a model. Lastly once all these inputs are brought together in a tabulated framework, and the evolving multicultural model is screened against three known working scenarios, and further synthesized such that the refined model was then called a strategic transcultural model of leadership. Before this can be achieved however, various North American multicultural models posited were looked at in a literary review, which served to reinforce the understanding of the need to balance the universal and the particular aspects of culture. In refining a strategic transcultural model, the thesis next attempted to address the problem of developing a national macro-cultural identity. A strict delineation in a postmodern era between Church and State was considered to be not only unnecessary but a modern myth, also noting that the State mirrors the Church in many of the problems of community and identity. Thus the meso-level of the Church provided key insights into the macro-level of the State. An argument all along was posed for not just orchestrating a macro-culture based on multiculturalism, nor in just upholding the micro-cultural individual identities at the expense of participation in a national framework and beyond this the global village, but an argument was made for a both/and scenario. In doing this the thesis sought to address both the macro-cultural and individual cultural identities at every level and in every element of the model of leadership. The plausibility of the argument for today was based on the prevalence of a language of choice – in most cases English – and an ethos of reconciliation and inclusivity for which Madiba and Tutu among others have set the standard. A final picture of a community based on both was posited for reflection, a picture that John paints where the great heavenly host (mirroring the macro-level of the Kingdom) is contrasted with the micro-level of a people made up “from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Rev 5:9).

Pearce, Debra Marie. "A case study of the wildflower industry, its participants and their perspectives on rural development and change in the South West and Great Southern Regions of Western Australia." Thesis, Curtin University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/404.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an in-depth review and analysis of the wildflower industry within the South West and Great Southern Regions of Western Australia, within the context of the social, economic and environmental changes occurring in these high amenity rural regions. The thesis draws on questionnaire and interview data, drawn from wildflower growers, native flower and foliage pickers (‘bushpickers’), wholesalers, exporters, tourism business operators and wildflower and tourism industry support officers, to present a thorough analysis of a contemporary (albeit small) rural industry. Multifunctional transition theory is applied to assist in understanding the structure and agency-related influences affecting the reasons why wildflower producers and pickers show limited interest in diversifying into tourism. The use of actor-network analysis supports this multifunctional transition assessment framework. It is argued that the southern wildflower industry comprises a set of individuals representing a multitude of rural ideologies and expressing, at a personal agency level, varied and sometimes dichotomous perspectives in relation to how they, as producers, view productivist and non-productivist objectives in relation to their involvement in the industry.Producer perspectives on tourism development in relation to the wildflower industry are considered, within the context of changing patterns of rural consumption and production in the study area. The thesis argues that the set of actors present in the industry during the study period (2001-2003) perceived very limited wildflower tourism opportunities for themselves, as a result of the political economy structures, local networks and endogenous factors affecting wildflower producer decisionmaking.Furthermore, the study addresses the implications for the wildflower industry of changing societal and environmental values, particularly in relation to changing forest management policies in Western Australia. Decreased access to native forest for flower and foliage harvesting, as part of a broader reassessment of the ecological sustainability of forest management practices, is identified as a potentially significant factor in reducing the volume of Western Australian wildflower exports, and thus the international market presence of product from this State. This work contributes to ongoing theoretical debates on rural change in Australia through its consideration of the structure and agency influences upon producers’ decision-making, in a specific industrial context. The analytical approach adopted contributes to discussion on both the applicability of the concept of multifunctionality in rural Australia and its utility as a framework for assessing rural development trajectories.

Niemeier, Brian Ashley. "The impact of institutional core values on traditional students at a Southern Baptist college." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/283.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examined to what degree traditional students were impacted by the institutional core values at a Southern Baptist college. The subjects of mission statements, core values, and college impact were defined. Special attention was given to the eight institutional core values being examined in this study. The current study was conducted at Georgetown College. Located within the eleven state region that is encompassed by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accrediting agency, Georgetown College is a member of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools. The goal of Georgetown College, broadly defined, is to provide a quality educational program within the context of a values-based Christian atmosphere. The sample of the current study included all the traditional freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Georgetown College at the beginning of the fall semester of 2003. Data gathering consisted of two concurrent lines of inquiry: similarities and differences in students' agreement with the institutional core values. These lines of inquiry were analyzed according to four specific areas of interest including students' class year, gender, ethnic background, and religious affiliation. A value statement index was created for use in this study. The core values of community and integrity were rated by the students as the most important values in the study. The Christian core values showed a general increase among almost all of the students from the freshmen to the senior year. The core values concerning diversity and cultural enrichment programs were rated as the least important values in the study. The presence of a Christian community was determined to be the key ingredient for Southern Baptist colleges to impact positively the value systems of their traditional students.

Parrack, Cameron. "The Influence of Stakeholder Values on the Acceptance of Water Reallocation Policy in Southern Alberta." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/5679.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, a great deal of water has been allocated to the agricultural sector in Alberta to support economic development and to contribute to food security. However, demand from other areas has increased in recent years, notably from the environment. Meeting new demands while still satisfying existing users has become a significant challenge. The combination of increased water use efficiency and productivity combined with reallocating water from agriculture to other sectors has emerged globally as a solution to this challenge. Thus, new policies regarding water reallocation need to be developed. Designing policies that are acceptable to the various stakeholders involved poses a considerable challenge. The values held by individuals determine how they will react to new public policies. Hence, to support effective policy making, a better understanding of how the non-irrigator population perceives water reallocation issues is necessary. Using mail-out surveys to collect data from the populations of Lethbridge, Alberta, and the surrounding smaller communities, this research aimed to identify the values regarding water allocation held by domestic, non-irrigator water users, and to determine how these values influence their acceptance of water allocation policies. Findings from the survey reveal how non-irrigators’ values influence their opinion of water transfers from the irrigation sector to the urban and environment sectors, and the conditions under which they should take place. A pro-environment value orientation was most prominent amongst the urban sample, while the rural sample was mainly moderate in their value orientation. The large moderate value cluster within the rural sample represented both pro-economic and pro-environment values depending on the focus of the survey item. Statements that would affect the community (irrigation sector) were met with pro-economic values while statements that involved making a personal sacrifice in order to protect the aquatic environment were strongly supported. Value orientation was found to greatly influence the respondents’ perception of water reallocation policy.

Anthony, Homer Clayton. "The twenty-one core values of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the ministries of graduates." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/423.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examined how the more recent graduates of The Southern Baptist Seminary (SBTS) are incorporating the twenty-one core values of the institution into their present ministries. The data garnered from this present research will enlighten interested parties to the world of assessment in higher education and the role that core values play in that process. Future graduates of SBTS will be impacted in their education due to the findings of this dissertation. A researcher-designed survey was placed before the recent graduates of SBTS under the direction of the Office of Institutional Advancement of the seminary. The raw data received through this research was tabulated and put into visual formats to aid the reader in seeing what these findings mean. Graduates from across the spectrum of theological education are in no way to be generalized by this research. Only those graduates across the spectrum of the four graduate school of SBTS are represented in the research population for this study. The findings have shown that while the high majority of those graduates that were surveyed had no prior knowledge of the existence of the core values the core values nonetheless existed in their ministries. The graduates reflected a trace of each of the core values throughout their ministries with the core values that focused on the glory of God, surrender to the Lordship of Christ, and a trust in the fidelity in the Bible to be the values that emerge over all others. Core values that collect the least amount of prevalence in the ministry of recent graduates were those that focused on new technologies and denominational affiliation. The overall picture of an average SBTS graduate is one of a studious student who carries a love of continued learning throughout his or her ministry. The recent graduate of SBTS does not lay claim to a vast knowledge of the historical setting of the seminary. With that understood, the history of the core values can be seen in his or her life due to the fact that such a large number of the graduates had no prior knowledge of the existence of the values, yet many of the values appear in their ministries. Across the spectrum of the four graduate schools, the number of respondents and the type of core values they responded to remain the same. The top three core values in positive or negative responses remained true from The School of Theology, The School of Music, The School of Leadership, and Church Ministry or The Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Church Growth. Further research is needed to reveal the thoughts on and impression of the core values of the seminary on the ministries of future graduates. Further research is also called for to examine if the present day core values add or detract from the past seminary training of older alumni. Any future research will add to the literature base for this area of study while at the same time keep the accreditation protocols and practices of training fresh among those tied to SBTS and the mission of the institution.

This thesis aims to illustrate the cultural differences in the work-related values between Northern and Southern Vietnam by using Hofstede's Value Survey Module (VSM), one of the most popular measures of cultural values. In the literature, national culture differences and the effect of various cultural dimensions on leadership styles, organization structures, employee's performance and management practice were investigated through many studies in the last two decades. Such cultural differences were shown to be the most difficult factor faced by the organizations in today's global business environment (Wisma, 2008; Krishna, Sahay & Walsham, 2006). However, the limitation of previous studies is that scholars tried to relate 'culture' to a nation as a whole. In fact, a variety of cultures may exist in many single regions within the country. Vietnam is a country with huge regional differences in culture, especially in the North (Hanoi City which is influenced by China) and the South (Ho Chi Minh City is influenced by the US). The purposes of this study are: first, to analyze the subcultural value differences between employees who live in the Northern and Southern Vietnam; second, identifying the factors that impact cultural differences across regions; third, applying five cultural dimensions of Hofstede in the case of Vietnam to identify regional differences in term of work-related values. Survey questionnaire has been conducted in this research and it will be dissimilated via the Internet to those employees who are working at small and medium enterprises in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. As the results of this study, the most significant differences are found in terms of individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation. First, in term of individualism and uncertainty avoidance, Ho Chi Minh City records higher scores than that of Hanoi. It is reasonable to assume that a positive correlation may exist between the economic development and individualism as well as uncertainty avoidance due to relatively comfort life contributed by fast economic development. In fact, Ho Chi Minh has recently become one of the biggest cities in Vietnam with the economic growth accelerated over others. Second, the score of long-term orientation in Hanoi is contrastively higher than Ho Chi Minh. Such observation can be explained by the theoretical concept that savings will be reduced when incomes rise, which is the way economic development affecting long-term orientation through savings (Edwards, 1996; Tang & Koveos, 2008). Hofstede’s dimensions have been studied in more than 50 countries, but this is the first study that tries to explain the influence of cultural differences to the work-related values in different parts of Vietnam in term of five cultural dimensions. Based on the findings of this study, managers may have a better insight of the Vietnamese labor market, which consists of people from various parts of the country. Furthermore, foreign investors can also establish an appropriate strategy to deal with the cultural difference before penetrating Vietnamese markets. Keywords: Cultural differences, Hofstede's Value Survey Module (VSM), regional differences, subculture, work-related values.

Abstract:
Engagement is an essential component to community building. Among the factors which contribute to engagement is perception. Of specific interest to landscape architecture are perceptions of landscape and water as they reveal environmental attitudes. Rural Southern Ontario has experienced notable land use pressures for resource extraction and renewable energy. This study explores the relationship between landscape and water perceptions by rural residents and levels of community engagement in a changing rural landscape. Instruments used for this study were a photo-based questionnaire and Visitor Employed Photography. The study found that individuals who are more engaged with the community have a greater ability to interpret landscape in the context of resource extraction and are more critical in their perception of quarry rehabilitation. Findings of this study can assist rural groups by providing insight into social capital and inform landscape planning and design practices when working with rural groups to increase engagement.

The contents of abstract in this thesis: Based on the research motives and objectives, this study targeted agricultural students at technological and vocational colleges in southern Taiwan to discuss the relationship among work experience, work values, and career intentions. Using a questionnaire survey and SPSS18.0 statistic software, data were collected and analyzed. The analyses included reliability, validity, description, independent sample t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, correlation, and regression. The results showed students enrolled in agriculture majors usually had short-term internship experience and part-time work experience. But they relatively lacked of agriculture-relevant work experience. The personal interaction was their highest work value while the self-growth was their lowest one. The students’ career intentions regarding agriculture was not high, and relatively high intentions were found in the students with parents engaged in agriculture. The students’ work experience would affect work values, and agriculture-relevant work experience of the students would also affect their career intentions regarding agriculture. In addition, their work values had positive effect on agricultural career intentions. Finally, feasible suggestions were proposed according to the findings for educational institutions, employment counsellingorganizations, and agricultural policy makers. Abstract The history of Private Security Industry in Taiwan has been twenty-five years till now. Private security guards are not only the major support to governmental police force but also the labor market in demand now in spite of the work force surplus in other industries caused by economic depression. The development of private security industry is still at developing stage so that some organizations’ policies and systems are not complete and sound enough. In addition, the demographics of employees in this industry are different from those in others. Majority of them are low-level educational or unemployed older workers. They chose this low entry-barrier occupation in order to solve economic plight but find no aspiration for or don’t adapt to this position after working for a while. The issues discussed above have been affected private security guards’ job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Few of the foreign and domestic studies on private security industry focused on behavioral issue and were conducted quantitatively. The purposes of this study were to measure work values, job satisfaction and organizational commitment of private security guards and to examine the effect of work values on those two work attitudes. Due to most of private security guards are older workers, in this study age has divided into four categories with the reference of the Bureau of Accounting & Statistics as following: young aged(below 25), middle aged(26-45), senior aged(46-65), and old aged(above 66). Data collected from a questionnaire survey of 967 private security guards in southern part of Taiwan was analyzed using the statistical techniques of crosstab, descriptive statistics analysis, T-test, one-way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. The results indicates: 1.Most of private security guards are reemployed; most of their previous positions are at non-managerial levels; previous tenure are mainly below 15 years; most of them engaged in service industry; the main reason of last separation for all of them was voluntary separation, but for the senior aged it was factory or business shut down; the first reason of present employment is basically to support family economy. 2.Private security guards emphasize most on the work value of “the orientation of organizational security and economy” but least on “the orientation of stability and free from anxiety ”; they have greatest “intrinsic job satisfaction” but least “extrinsic job satisfaction”; they have highest “affective commitment” but lowest “continuous commitment”. 3.The occupation of a private security guard should possesses the work values of higher “orientation of social interaction” and lower “orientation of stability and free from anxiety”. Employers might take the work values orientation into consideration in the process of recruiting and selecting. 4.Senior aged private security guards have higher affective commitment and normative commitment than the young and middle aged. 5.Among work values, “the orientation of self-realization, the orientation of esteem, and the orientation of stability and free from anxiety” had significant positive effect on job satisfaction; “the orientation of organizational security and economy” had significant negative effect on job satisfaction; “the orientation of esteem” has significant positive effect on organizational commitment; “the orientation of social interaction” had significant positive effect on affective commitment; “the orientation of stability and free from anxiety” had significant negative effect on affective commitment, but significant positive effect on continuous commitment. Private security company employers might regard these findings as the direction of modifying organization policies to improve employee’s work attitudes. Key words: Private Security guard, work values, job attitude, job satisfaction, organizational commitment

Abstract:
This research was based on ‘Catholic secondary education and identity reformation in Zambia’s Southern Province. Its main purpose was to explore the nature and scope of the undesired identity reformation experienced in Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province as well as suggest possible ways of how the problem can be resolved. The study was guided by the following main research question ‘How has a conflict of values between the evolving Catholic education policies and Zambian national education policies affected the identity of Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province?’ This question formed the main basis for the achievement of the study’s overarching purpose highlighted earlier. A qualitative methodology was utilized to gather data for this research. Data was gathered using semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews/discussions and documentary/content analysis. Research participants included: the Secretary of Catholic education, the PEO, school headteachers, teachers of RE, parents and grade twelve learners. Key documents analyzed using document analysis were Catholic education policies and Zambian national educational policies. The following findings resulted from the study: a conflict of values is non-existent between Catholic education policies and Zambian national education policies; there are four real/major causes of undesired identity reformation in Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province; the various contemporary challenges experienced by Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province are responsible for the undesired weakening of the school’s ‘academic’ and ‘religious’ mission; RE has experienced undesired changes at the levels of its nature, role and place in the Catholic secondary school curriculum over the years; Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province can be characterized as ‘partially Catholic’; realigning Catholic secondary schools with Catholic education policy involves returning such schools back to Catholic educational practice as recommended in Catholic education policies. The main conclusion of the study was that undesired identity reformation is present in Catholic secondary schools in Zambia’s Southern Province but it is not linked to a conflict of values in Catholic education policies and Zambian national education policies. To resolve the problem of undesired identity reformation in Catholic secondary schools, all study recommendations emphasized an urgent return by the schools to educational practice as recommended in Catholic education policy if they are to regain their lost desired total-Catholic character or identity.

Sobhan, Abdul Mayeen Nazre. "Depositional architecture and history of the late Permian Broughton, Pheasants Nest and Erins Vale formations, Southern Sydney Basin, New South Wales, Australia." Phd thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/110390.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns a sedimentological study of the Late Permian Broughton, Pheasants Nest and Erins Vale Formations, southern Sydney Basin, New South Wales, aimed at producing a palaeoenvironmental interpretation of these sequences. It is based on facies analysis of borecore data, vertical and lateral profiling of outcrop sequences, including architectural element analysis, and an integration of the results of these studies with previous work. The sequences studied begin with the interdigitating lower offshore silt of the upper Berry Siltstone and lower offshore sand-belt of the lower Broughton Formation, including progradational volcanic shoreface sequences. Sedimentation occurred in the 'Broughton Seaway' between the western cratonic landmass and a north-northeast oriented volcanic barrier in the east. River-derived meltwater underflows, massflows, tidally-driven longshore currents and migration of large sandwaves into the lower offshore sand-belt were the major depositional processes. The upper offshore sand-sheets of the middle Broughton Formation represent a widespread development of time-transgressive, above storm wave base, aggradational sedimentation. The progradational sandskirts of volcanic alluvial fans in the south (Jamberoo Sandstone Member) constructed a delta which was of a mixed type between a pyroclastic and alluvial fan delta. These kinds of deltas probably served as significant sources and depositional conduits for the offshore sediments which were dispersed mainly through wave action in a storm-dominated setting._ Submarine volcanic flows and associated shallow marine environments, and emerged volcanic islands with woodlands were coevally present in the southeast during the deposition of the Broughton Formation. The upper Broughton Formation is generally marked by a northeastward diachronous progradation of the southern shoreline, which progressively filled up the Broughton Seaway. Progradational evolution of the deltaic to barred shoreline, reflecting waning influence of the Gerringong volcanic barriers, was contemporaneous with the upper deltaic and distributary coastal zone sedimentation of the Pheasants Nest Formation. Actually, the periglacial braided subaerial fans and subaerial volcanism modelled for the lower and middle Pheasants Nest Formation greatly contributed to a northward progradation of the shoreline and retreat of the Broughton Seaway. With additional contributions from the western craton, a centripetal sediment transport pattern toward a northeast-oriented depocentre resulted. This meant development of a northeasterly flowing longitudinal drainage system. Physiographically, most of the former Broughton Seaway had now transformed into a broad valley between the volcanic and cratonic hinterlands. During the upper Pheasants Nest Formation time, extensive development of a flat, alluvial plain with an axial drainage pattern, low-lying coastal swamps and networks of high sinuosity, single channel or multiple channel anastomosing river systems is postulated. A shallow epeiric Erins Vale sea was caused by transgression across the topographically low-lying northeastern to northern alluvial plains of the Pheasants Nest Formation . The lower-middle Erins Vale Formation represents shoreface-offshore conditions in the east and north, including an oxygen-deficient, lower offshore regime (Kulnura Marine Tongue) - and shoreline fades of a transgressive barrier system in the west and south. Deposition during the upper Erins Vale Formation occurred through fan delta progradation from the western craton, which passed upward into the subaerial fan of the Marangaroo Conglomerate; a central and southern regressive barrier system and an energetic shoreface sand in the east which passed upward into the Wilton Formation. The upper Nowra Sandstone and lower Berry Siltstone form a transgressive systems tract. A sustained tectonic loading producing protracted subsidence was apparently the primary cause of basin subsidence. The upper Berry Siltstone and lower to middle Broughton Formation represent an overall highstand systems tract with portions of the upper Berry Siltstone and the lowest Broughton Formation showing interludes of minor transgressive pulses. This reflected a more stabilized base-level situation, following a reduction of basin subsidence rate. The upper Broughton Formation and lower-middle Pheasants Nest Formation constitute a lowstand systems tract, including early regressive phases represented by the upper Broughton Formation. It was related to the development of a foreswell on the basin margin and subsidence in the depocentre caused by the propagation of compressional energy from the orogen. The upper Pheasants Nest Formation indicates an early transgressive stage and the lower Erins Vale Formation, including the Kulnura Marine Tongue, is a transgressive systems tract. The middle Erins Vale Formation represents a highstand systems tract. Subsequently, the early regressive phases represented by the upper Erins Vale Formation, the lowstand wedge of the basal Wilton Formation and the Marangaroo Conglomerate constituted a lowstand systems tract. They developed as a result of erosion of a fores well produced on the cratonic margin. This study provides evidence in support of the Currarong Orogen. The Offshore Uplift is probably a preserved portion of the Currarong Orogen and the Newcastle Sub-basin was a likely depocentre for the Late Permian sequences. A periglacial climate with seasonal freezing and thawing had significant influence on sedimentation. Episodic meltwater discharge mobilized large volumes of volcaniclastic materials in spring (as lahars at times of large floods and/ or volcanic eruptions) and associated ice floes enroute to the sea. The major variables for the studied sequences in the southern Sydney Basin are constrained in this thesis, and comparative studies identified modern and ancient global examples that are broadly similar to the Late Permian sequences.

The aim of this research was to explore the relations on working pressure event degree, physiological values and quality of life among allied personnel working on outpatient department. This cross-section relational survey was conducted by structured questionnaire and physiiological values. Data were collected between 8am and 9am (before working), including individual´s blood pressure, cortisol level and the structured questionnaire. Blood pressure was also collected when participants finished working. All outpatient department nurses in a southern medical centre were participated. There were 141 valid questionnaires with response rate as 88.1%. Research instruments include: demographic characteristics, working environment, working pressure event scales which was developed by Yan yuch yun(2005) .“Health related quality of life scales (WHOQOL-BREF)” was translated by Yao kai ping. Spss 20.0 version was used for data analysis. Research results and main findings: 一、The overall score on the disturbed degree of working pressure event was 3.32 which indicates between median to high , “Patient often rush in to inquire because of impatience” had the highest score (mean: 4.01), and both “VIP asking for cutting in to see the doctor” and “Colleague in the same hospital asking for cutting in to see the doctor” had second highest score (mean: 3.98) The pre-test systolic blood pressure was114.07(11.90), diastolic blood pressure was70.28(8.12), the post-test systolic blood pressure was 122.29(2.86), and diastolic blood pressure was74.83(9.40), The cortisol data was 12.36(4.77). In addition, among the four domains on the quality of life, the physical domain had highest average score as13.96, and the social domain was score as 13.80, the psychological domain was scored as 13.12, and the lowest score was environmental domain as13.08 。 二、Despite both increased physiological values and pressure awareness met the medium level in post-test, the data was still acceptable。 三、Among demographic characteristics, marriage, rank, education, degree, health awareness, life happiness, and income had relation to disturbed degree of working pressure event. Working environment had statistically significant difference on both today´s number of appointments and the number of appointments daily and in two weeks. Quality of life had relation to age, education, health awareness, life happiness, income, today´s number of appointments and working pressure。 四、The relation to physiological values and all domains on quality of life, both the systolic blood pressure variance and the diastolic blood pressure variance had negative relation to physical domain; whereas, the relation to physiological values and the disturbed degree of working pressure event, the systolic blood pressure variance had positive relation to administrative. On the other hand, the disturbed degree of working pressure event had significantly negative relation to all domains on quality of life. Furthermore, stepwise the multiple regression analysis to predict quality of life to disturbed degree of working pressure event, and physiological values, the “non-routine task” was the only one negative relation to all domains on quality of life。. The results of this explorative study provide medical authorities better understand about the relations on disturbed degree of working pressure event, physiological values and quality of life among allied personnel working on outpatient department. Although the data on physiological values were found acceptable, a long term constant surveillance was needed to avoid personnel from any physically and mentally damage and to promote their quality of life。

Kibuuka, Hudson Eddie. "Mission statement and management of private tertiary religious institutions in Eastern and Southern Africa." 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17085.

Full text
Abstract:
The region of Eastern and Southern Africa has recently experienced an unprecedented development of private tertiary institutions. Most of these institutions are established by religious organisations which, since the inception of education, have been involved in operating educational institutions of lower levels. Although referred to as private institutions, which by definition would imply funding other than the government sources, these private institutions find themselves, at times requesting the government to fund their development as well as their operations. This study sought to investigate if these private religious institutions have unique raison d'etre expressed in the form of mission statements. The study also investigated the nature of their management and the management structures in practice. The literature reviewed indicated that private religious institutions have a unique mission based on their basic concept of education and their world view. They seek to pursue and inculcate specific values. Operating in a competitive environment, however, in which their competitors do receive funding from the government makes the private institutions vulnerable to hardships. The study was conducted using qualitative research approach in three countries, namely Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe; involving all degree granting recognised private religious institutions in the sample and focussing on the management. The respondents were chosen by elite purposive and snowball sampling. The main data collection method was the interview. However, document analysis, observations, and a questionnaire were also used. The findings from the data indicate that private religious institutions have unique missions although they are, at times, not expressed in the form of mission statements. As a result some of the stakeholders, including those involved in management, don't get to know what their institutions' missions are. The study concludes by emphasising the development of clear mission statements involving the stakeholders in the process and having the mission statements widely disseminated. It is also recommended that training in management is important for the managers of the institutions at the various levels. A model of management is proposed for streamlining the management of the institutions considering the requirements of the national governments as well as those of the religious proprietors.

In recent years, the National Health Insurance system in the health care environment changes and the impact of changes in public hospitals in order to reduce operating costs, strict control of personnel expenses, was a "health care operations in accordance with the Fund's income employment medical manpower," which have to provide for deficiencies in medical hospital personnel, health care operating funds to set aside a certain percentage of income the amount of employment, to public hospitals, increasing the rate of contract staff in the process of hospital services has become an indispensable role and therefore, public hospitals contract-related issues worth exploring. This study used questionnaires to the southern region of three veterans hospitals and a military hospital for a sample of the lease object to explore in public knowledge of contract staff on study, work values, psychological empowerment, job burnout on the morale of cognitive performance, In other words, are based on public hospitals for the main contract to explore the views of the morale of its work. In this study, data collection in order to assist the key to the questionnaire issued by the main contract staff to public hospitals to release the questionnaire, conducted a questionnaire survey data collection and issued a total of 470 questionnaires, 424 were recovered, excluding 22 invalid questionnaires, A total of 402 valid questionnaires. In this study, the use of SPSS statistical software for statistical analysis tools, key findings are as follows: 1. The southern region of three veterans hospitals and a military hospital leases the personal characteristics (gender, age, marriage, length of service, the highest academic qualifications, duties, on a per capita income) on the knowledge, work ethic, mental Fu, work burnout the morale of some significant differences. 2. The southern region of three veterans hospitals and a military hospital in the learning contract, the work ethic, mental Fu, job burnout on the morale of the work between the research variables have a correlation analysis between the significant correlation, the only variable learning the morale of the work between variables not significantly related. 3. Knowledge, work ethic, psychological empowerment, job burnout on the morale and the level of multiple regression analysis have a significant impact on regression analysis, the only knowledge of the work was no significant positive impact on morale. 4. Different knowledge clusters, the values of different clusters and different clusters of psychological empowerment, job burnout in different clusters, identify different groups of staff in public hospitals of contractual knowledge, work ethic, psychological empowerment, job burnout, work the morale of the differences between the variables are significant differences in analysis. Based on the above findings of this study were members of the public hospitals, contract managers and the future researchers to make recommendations for reference.
