Abstract:

Thesis, Poitiers, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015POIT5006/document.

Abstract:
A mythical figure for some and unknown to others, Bébian Auguste (1789-1839) reflects the ambivalence of Deaf History which is sometimes recognized, sometimes ignored. In the wake of Abbot Epée, whose descendants retained his name and who demonstrated the trainability of the deaf on a large scale, this man was nevertheless the catalyst of an unprecedented upheaval, which crosses the boundaries of many educational structures. The objective of this research on Auguste Bébian, that combines the unique biographical elements of his thoughts and analysis, is not to deconstruct the myth, but instead to try and decipher the messages it carries, and grasp what we learn indirectly about the Deaf.Born in Guadeloupe in 1789, it is on the other side of the Atlantic, in France, that this key figure fulfilled the majority of his destiny. Hosted at the National Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris in the early nineteenth century, the daily association with its residents made him the first hearing speaker to perfectly master sign language, the natural language of deaf people as well as the culture of which it is inherent. Having become a teacher, he did not cease to defend sign language as a full-fledged language system to awaken the intelligence of deaf children, "we do not pay any more attention to the sunlight that enlightens us every day ": his many publications show considerable modernity, and are unmatched to date.In the chain of events that leads to the emancipation of the Deaf, which was later animated by Ferdinand Berthier, this study shows how the impulse of Augustus Bébian was a key link, although inversely proportional to his discretion

Amann, Flora.

Full text
Abstract:
At the intersection of the history of linguistic ideas and the history of representations, this thesis studies scholarly and fictional discourses on deafness between the final years of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the Restoration (1776-1815). This period covers the years where the Abbé de L'Épée and the Abbé Sicard carried out their work. It matches the period of changes in the course of the history of the deaf people in France and how they were considered. The emergence of a specialist discourse on deafness, the setting up of institutions dedicated to the collective education of deaf people and the development of sign language and their literacy, mark the beginning of the integration of deaf people into society. Educators and philosophers are not the only ones to talk about deafness; the deaf people and their education also entrhal novelists and authors of short fiction. The sentimental novel seized the silent character and its sign language, sometimes separating him from deafness. Without doubt, the novelists have been interested much more by muteness than deafness, because the former enabled them to question the social function of speech. In their works, the novelists use contrast to reveal the malfunction of speech caused by the Revolution. The aim of this thesis is twofold. First, we put speech on deafness back in the scholarly context of the times and explain how it helps us understand the linguistic, anthropological and philosophical changes of this period. Secondly, through the history of the representations, we show how knowledge and fiction meet in the process of metaphorization of the idea of deafness of the end of the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
Despite the fact that, to date, only a couple of books treat of deafness in cinema, we should not hastily conclude that this subject lacks interest. We even postulate that this subject offers unsuspected richness. Our thesis thus engages in the exploration of this complex and dynamic relationship which exists between cinema and deafness, by observing it from different angles. We will therefore rely on Deaf and Disability Studies to examine the various marks that deafness has left in cinematographic art, as well as those left by cinema in Deaf culture. To do this, we will look back in history and seek to understand how cinema and the deaf community meet, influence each other or come into conflict. From Demenÿ's first phonoscopic productions to contemporary mainstream productions, including creations in sign language, we will highlight the often overlooked role of deaf people in the history of cinema, as subjects, actors, producers and directors. Our exploration will lead us to ask ourselves what transformations cinema undergoes, both in its form and in its content, when it comes into contact with Deaf culture, and vice versa. We will also examine the efforts made by those who seek to make cinema a “common” space for deaf and hearing people

Abstract:
Based on the case of deaf-mute and blind people in the nineteenth century, the thesis treats the processes by which the state has contributed to the construction of society. More precisely, three linked processes are studied : the birth and strengthening of the cognitive category "sensorial disabled" ; the making of the collective identities of deaf-mute and blind social groups, in particular through the production of identifying attributes (sign langage, braille alphabet) ; the structuration and institutionalization of the education of blind and deaf-mute children as a specific social activity. Through a socio-historical analysis which takes into account the general process of constructing the bureaucratic state, the thesis highlights some of the forms by which administrative agents and institutions, speaking in the name of the state, act upon society

Abstract:
Is there a politics of individualism ? - The work of spiritualist philosopher and philanthropist Joseph-Marie de Gérando (1772-1842) appears as a good point of view on this issue, although the idea of a sociological spiritualism may seem paradoxical. This study follows therefore what happens to comparative method through the various aspects of the philosophy of this little known although crucial author. His contributions to the Ideology and psychology, anthropology, grammar, comparative literature, philanthropy and administration, his work for the education of deaf-mutes are considered in this perspective. The main result of this work can be summarized simply as the spiritual paradox. Spiritualism, which Gérando is one of the first representatives, as it gets into interiority, opens to concrete practices and to an original form of comparative approachs, as if its introspective tendency naturally led him to a turnaround point able to show the weakness of subject "dispositif". In another aspect, we establish how took place the transition from "ideology", in the sense that this term has for Ideologues, sensualist philosophers of the Directoire, to the "ideology" in the sense of cultural anthropology (the social ideas). From this point of view, the specific contribution of spiritualism would have been to constitute the mind as an area of elaboration for the concept of "social"

Abstract:
In the Essays, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) reports a considerable number of stories taken from his readings, his own experiments or those taken from the people around him. The first part of this study answers the question about the types of these. The second part is mainly devoted to the examination of their sources. The last part insists on the way Montaigne appropriates the accounts of others in his text. We first see the formal aspects of them. Then we tackle the study of the fitting of the stories because we find rather particular cases like reporting a very long story, or giving the same one several times, or aligning a series of stories. Lastly, we try to define the roles the stories play in the text. We present three possibilities: they are used to illustrate one idea, they intervene as a precept or they launch or start again the reflection. Our work finishes thus on confirming the close relationship between the stories and the reflection or the opinions of Montaigne

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractOver the last 100 years, there has been an explosion of research in the field of animal bioacoustics. These changes have been facilitated by technological advances, decrease in size and cost of recording equipment, increased battery life and data storage capabilities, the transition from analog-to-digital recorders, and the development of sound analysis software. Acousticians can now study the airborne and underwater sounds from vocal species across the globe at temporal and spatial scales that were not previously feasible and often in the absence of human observers. Many advances in the field of bioacoustics were enabled by equipment initially developed for the military, professional musicians, and radio, TV, and film industries. This chapter reviews the history of the development of sound recorders, transducers (i.e., microphones and hydrophones), and signal processing hardware and software used in animal bioacoustics research. Microphones and hydrophones can be used as a single sensor or as an array of elements facilitating the localization of sound sources. Analog recorders, which relied on magnetic tape, have been replaced with digital recorders; acoustic data was initially stored on tapes, but is now stored on optical discs, hard drives, and/or solid-state memories. Recently, tablets and smartphones have become popular recording and analysis devices. With these advances, it has never been easier, or more cost-efficient, to study the sounds of the world.

Abstract:
AbstractLarge solar energetic-particle (SEP) events are clearly associated in time with eruptive phenomena on the Sun, but how? When large SEP events were first observed, flares were the only visible candidate, and diffusion theory was stretched to explain how the particles could spread through space, as widely as observed. The observation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and the wide, fast shock waves they can drive, provided better candidates later. Then small events were found with 1000-fold enhancements in 3He/4He that required a different kind of source—should we reconsider flares, or their open-field cousins, solar jets? The 3He-rich events were soon associated with the electron beams that produce type III radio bursts. It seems the radio astronomers knew of both SEP sources all along. Sometimes the distinction between the sources is blurred when shocks reaccelerate residual 3He-rich impulsive suprathermal ions. Eventually, however, we would even begin to measure the source-plasma temperature that helps to better distinguish the SEP sources.

Abstract:
Humans are able to well recognize mixtures of speech signals produced by two or more simultaneous speakers. This ability is known as cocktail party effect. To apply the cocktail party effect to engineering, we can construct novel systems of blind source separation such as current automatic speech recognition systems and active noise control systems under environment noises. A variety of methods have been developed to improve the performance of blind source separation in the presence of background noise or interfering speech. Considering blind source separation as the characteristics of human, artificial neural networks are suitable for it. In this paper, we proposed a method of blind source separation using a neural network. The present neural network can adaptively separate sound sources on training the internal parameters. The network was three-layered. Sound pressure was output from two sound sources and the mixed sound was measured with two microphones. The time history of microphone signals was input to the input layer of neural network. The two outputs of hidden layer were corresponding to the two sound pressure separated respectively. The two outputs of output layer were corresponding to the two microphone signals expected at next time step and compared with the actual microphone signals at next time step to train the neural network by a backpropagation method. In this procedure, the signal from each sound source was adaptively separated. There were two conditions of sound source, sinusoidal signals of 440 and 1000 Hz. In order to assess the performance of neural network numerically and experimentally, a basic independent component analysis (ICA) was conducted simultaneously. The results obtained are as follows. The performance of blind separation by the neural network was higher than the basic ICA. In addition, the neural network can successfully separate the sound source in spite of the position of sound sources.

Abstract:
The Fort Huachuca Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) tasked ERDC-CERL to compile a history of the development of Fort Huachuca for use in evaluating existing facilities and how they fit within the larger, overarching history of the fort. Fort Huachuca desires a comprehensive history of the fort for use in better understanding how its various facilities integrate into the overall history and development of the fort and its existing National Historic Landmark (NHL) and proposed existing evaluated, eligible, and listed National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) properties and districts. This comprehensive history will help ENRD in making determinations on how to address future National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations and/or recommendations for adding new historic districts or expanding the existing historic district. ERDC-CERL compiled content from 18 existing historic contexts, building inventory and cultural re-sources reports, NRHP nomination and registration forms, and Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) forms previously completed for the ENRD, and used these resources to compile the current history.

Meyer, Erik, and Cathleen Balantic. Minidoka National Historic Site: Acoustic monitoring report, 2022. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2303680.

Full text
Abstract:
This study arose from the Minidoka National Historic Site (MIIN) Technical Assistance Request (TAR; #21332), which identified the need for baseline acoustic surveys to understand potential impacts to the acoustic environment from nearby proposed renewable energy development. From September through October 2022, the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD) gathered acoustic data at one site in MIIN to provide park managers with baseline information about the acoustic environment, including existing ambient sound levels and time-above noise effect levels. Overall, existing median ambient sound levels (LA50) at MIIN were 30.0 dB during the day and 33.1 dB at night. In the ANS-weighted frequency range, the sound level 35 dB (LAeq, 1s), was exceeded 24.2% of the day and 18.2% of the night. All other key sound levels (i.e., 45 dB and above) during the day and night were exceeded less than 4% of the time. Due to an error in the acoustic recording schedule, some NSNSD metrics are not included. As a supplement, a geospatial sound model predicts existing and natural ambient sound levels at MIIN are 32.8 (dBA) and 23.5 (dBA), respectively.

Atkinson, Dan, and Alex Hale, eds. From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.126.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under four headings: 1. From Source to Sea: River systems, from their source to the sea and beyond, should form the focus for research projects, allowing the integration of all archaeological work carried out along their course. Future research should take a holistic view of the marine and maritime historic environment, from inland lakes that feed freshwater river routes, to tidal estuaries and out to the open sea. This view of the landscape/seascape encompasses a very broad range of archaeology and enables connections to be made without the restrictions of geographical or political boundaries. Research strategies, programmes From Source to Sea: ScARF Marine and Maritime Panel Report iii and projects can adopt this approach at multiple levels; from national to site-specific, with the aim of remaining holistic and cross-cutting. 2. Submerged Landscapes: The rising research profile of submerged landscapes has recently been embodied into a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action; Submerged Prehistoric Archaeology and Landscapes of the Continental Shelf (SPLASHCOS), with exciting proposals for future research. Future work needs to be integrated with wider initiatives such as this on an international scale. Recent projects have begun to demonstrate the research potential for submerged landscapes in and beyond Scotland, as well as the need to collaborate with industrial partners, in order that commercially-created datasets can be accessed and used. More data is required in order to fully model the changing coastline around Scotland and develop predictive models of site survival. Such work is crucial to understanding life in early prehistoric Scotland, and how the earliest communities responded to a changing environment. 3. Marine & Maritime Historic Landscapes: Scotland’s coastal and intertidal zones and maritime hinterland encompass in-shore islands, trans-continental shipping lanes, ports and harbours, and transport infrastructure to intertidal fish-traps, and define understanding and conceptualisation of the liminal zone between the land and the sea. Due to the pervasive nature of the Marine and Maritime historic landscape, a holistic approach should be taken that incorporates evidence from a variety of sources including commercial and research archaeology, local and national societies, off-shore and onshore commercial development; and including studies derived from, but not limited to history, ethnology, cultural studies, folklore and architecture and involving a wide range of recording techniques ranging from photography, laser imaging, and sonar survey through to more orthodox drawn survey and excavation. 4. Collaboration: As is implicit in all the above, multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches are essential in order to ensure the capacity to meet the research challenges of the marine and maritime historic environment. There is a need for collaboration across the heritage sector and beyond, into specific areas of industry, science and the arts. Methods of communication amongst the constituent research individuals, institutions and networks should be developed, and dissemination of research results promoted. The formation of research communities, especially virtual centres of excellence, should be encouraged in order to build capacity.

Andresen, Jens-Bjørn R., and Søren M. Kristiansen. Historic maps as source for hydrological reconstruction of pre-industrial landscape wetness in Denmark: a methodological study. Det Kgl. Bibliotek, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/aul.491.

Full text
Abstract:
Historic maps are an important primary source which can be utilized in the reconstruction of environmental variables of the pre-industrial landscape. However, methodological constraints have hitherto prevented large scale and systematic approaches. In this paper a novel methodology is presented, which documents the usefulness of the maps in the study of paleo-hydrology and thus serves a better understanding of the conditions for agricultural production under pre-drainage conditions. The methodology is developed based on eighteenth and nineteenth century maps from a 100 km2 study area in one stream catchment in East Jutland, Denmark. It combines information from two types of historic maps in order to correlate computed soil hydrology (wetness index) and recorded historic land-use. The calculated wetness indexes are derived from contour lines on topographic (military) maps (in Danish: Høje Maalebordsblade), whereas the spatial overlays are land-use classes from economic maps (in Danish: Matrikelkort - Original 1). This study demonstrates – for the first time - that the wetness index is explanatory for the agricultural suitable/non-suitable dichotomy (tilled land versus “wetland”: meadows, fens, and peat bogs) on the historic economic maps. Furthermore, the study shows that pre-industrial arable areas were stretched to their limits in respect to cropping wet soils in this agricultural dominated landscape. The study confirms the existing belief that the historic economic maps constitute the best available source of these mosaic-landscapes for periods before the intense subsurface tile drainage began. This finding opens for further methodological development and up-scaling using automatic feature detection, contour line extraction and text recognition of historical maps.

Jiang, Xiaowei, and John Cherry. History and Hydraulics of Flowing Wells. The Groundwater Project, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21083/cpet1503.

Full text
Abstract:
Because flowing wells are spectacular visual evidence of groundwater occurrence, they became the impetus for both qualitative and quantitative groundwater science. The pursuit of answers to fundamental questions generated by flowing wells in confined aquifers bounded by aquitards moved the science forward for more than a century until pumping became the main form of groundwater development. Since the turn of the 20th century, flowing wells in unconfined aquifers were an impetus for the paradigm shift from aquitard-bound flow to cross-formational flow driven by topography. In this book, the histories of drilling flowing wells in France, the US, Canada, and China—which led to important findings on hydraulics of flowing wells—are summarized. The occurrence of flowing wells in confined aquifers, unconfined aquifers and semi-confined aquifers are demonstrated by showing the corresponding forms of topography-driven groundwater flow from recharge to discharge areas in different aquifers. This book introduces classic models of steady-state and transient discharge rates from flowing wells without considering basinal groundwater flow fields as proposed by Dupuit (1863), Jacob and Lohman (1952), and Hantush (1959). Recent models of transient and steady-state discharge rates of flowing wells that consider basinal groundwater flow fields—which led to a clear understanding of sources of water derived in flowing wells—are also introduced. By providing a comprehensive description of flowing wells, this book is useful not only to understanding hydraulics of flowing wells, but also to understanding the history of groundwater science.
