Full textA mythical figure for some and unknown to others, Bébian Auguste (1789-1839) reflects the ambivalence of Deaf History which is sometimes recognized, sometimes ignored. In the wake of Abbot Epée, whose descendants retained his name and who demonstrated the trainability of the deaf on a large scale, this man was nevertheless the catalyst of an unprecedented upheaval, which crosses the boundaries of many educational structures. The objective of this research on Auguste Bébian, that combines the unique biographical elements of his thoughts and analysis, is not to deconstruct the myth, but instead to try and decipher the messages it carries, and grasp what we learn indirectly about the Deaf.Born in Guadeloupe in 1789, it is on the other side of the Atlantic, in France, that this key figure fulfilled the majority of his destiny. Hosted at the National Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris in the early nineteenth century, the daily association with its residents made him the first hearing speaker to perfectly master sign language, the natural language of deaf people as well as the culture of which it is inherent. Having become a teacher, he did not cease to defend sign language as a full-fledged language system to awaken the intelligence of deaf children, "we do not pay any more attention to the sunlight that enlightens us every day ": his many publications show considerable modernity, and are unmatched to date.In the chain of events that leads to the emancipation of the Deaf, which was later animated by Ferdinand Berthier, this study shows how the impulse of Augustus Bébian was a key link, although inversely proportional to his discretion
Amann, Flora. "Sourds et muets entre savoir et fiction au tournant des Lumières." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/24630.
Full textAt the intersection of the history of linguistic ideas and the history of representations, this thesis studies scholarly and fictional discourses on deafness between the final years of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the Restoration (1776-1815). This period covers the years where the Abbé de L'Épée and the Abbé Sicard carried out their work. It matches the period of changes in the course of the history of the deaf people in France and how they were considered. The emergence of a specialist discourse on deafness, the setting up of institutions dedicated to the collective education of deaf people and the development of sign language and their literacy, mark the beginning of the integration of deaf people into society. Educators and philosophers are not the only ones to talk about deafness; the deaf people and their education also entrhal novelists and authors of short fiction. The sentimental novel seized the silent character and its sign language, sometimes separating him from deafness. Without doubt, the novelists have been interested much more by muteness than deafness, because the former enabled them to question the social function of speech. In their works, the novelists use contrast to reveal the malfunction of speech caused by the Revolution. The aim of this thesis is twofold. First, we put speech on deafness back in the scholarly context of the times and explain how it helps us understand the linguistic, anthropological and philosophical changes of this period. Secondly, through the history of the representations, we show how knowledge and fiction meet in the process of metaphorization of the idea of deafness of the end of the eighteenth century.

Full textDespite the fact that, to date, only a couple of books treat of deafness in cinema, we should not hastily conclude that this subject lacks interest. We even postulate that this subject offers unsuspected richness. Our thesis thus engages in the exploration of this complex and dynamic relationship which exists between cinema and deafness, by observing it from different angles. We will therefore rely on Deaf and Disability Studies to examine the various marks that deafness has left in cinematographic art, as well as those left by cinema in Deaf culture. To do this, we will look back in history and seek to understand how cinema and the deaf community meet, influence each other or come into conflict. From Demenÿ's first phonoscopic productions to contemporary mainstream productions, including creations in sign language, we will highlight the often overlooked role of deaf people in the history of cinema, as subjects, actors, producers and directors. Our exploration will lead us to ask ourselves what transformations cinema undergoes, both in its form and in its content, when it comes into contact with Deaf culture, and vice versa. We will also examine the efforts made by those who seek to make cinema a “common” space for deaf and hearing people

Full textBased on the case of deaf-mute and blind people in the nineteenth century, the thesis treats the processes by which the state has contributed to the construction of society. More precisely, three linked processes are studied : the birth and strengthening of the cognitive category "sensorial disabled" ; the making of the collective identities of deaf-mute and blind social groups, in particular through the production of identifying attributes (sign langage, braille alphabet) ; the structuration and institutionalization of the education of blind and deaf-mute children as a specific social activity. Through a socio-historical analysis which takes into account the general process of constructing the bureaucratic state, the thesis highlights some of the forms by which administrative agents and institutions, speaking in the name of the state, act upon society
Bocquet, Antoine. "Esprit et société (la philosophie sociale de J. -M. Gérando)." Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0105.
Full textIs there a politics of individualism ? - The work of spiritualist philosopher and philanthropist Joseph-Marie de Gérando (1772-1842) appears as a good point of view on this issue, although the idea of a sociological spiritualism may seem paradoxical. This study follows therefore what happens to comparative method through the various aspects of the philosophy of this little known although crucial author. His contributions to the Ideology and psychology, anthropology, grammar, comparative literature, philanthropy and administration, his work for the education of deaf-mutes are considered in this perspective. The main result of this work can be summarized simply as the spiritual paradox. Spiritualism, which Gérando is one of the first representatives, as it gets into interiority, opens to concrete practices and to an original form of comparative approachs, as if its introspective tendency naturally led him to a turnaround point able to show the weakness of subject "dispositif". In another aspect, we establish how took place the transition from "ideology", in the sense that this term has for Ideologues, sensualist philosophers of the Directoire, to the "ideology" in the sense of cultural anthropology (the social ideas). From this point of view, the specific contribution of spiritualism would have been to constitute the mind as an area of elaboration for the concept of "social"
Lee, Seon-Hee. "Histoire et histoires dans les Essais de Montaigne." Paris 10, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA100074.
Full textIn the Essays, Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) reports a considerable number of stories taken from his readings, his own experiments or those taken from the people around him. The first part of this study answers the question about the types of these. The second part is mainly devoted to the examination of their sources. The last part insists on the way Montaigne appropriates the accounts of others in his text. We first see the formal aspects of them. Then we tackle the study of the fitting of the stories because we find rather particular cases like reporting a very long story, or giving the same one several times, or aligning a series of stories. Lastly, we try to define the roles the stories play in the text. We present three possibilities: they are used to illustrate one idea, they intervene as a precept or they launch or start again the reflection. Our work finishes thus on confirming the close relationship between the stories and the reflection or the opinions of Montaigne
