Full textThermoplastic composites utilisation isincreasing in the transport industry. Welding is afast joining method for these materials, creatingcontinuity between the assembled parts and offeringhigh mechanical strength. However, its applicationto transport structures can raise questionsdue to the dynamic loading that may occurand the strain rate sensitivity of various thermoplasticmatrices. Despite the extensive literatureon composite welding, no studies have beenfound on the strain rate sensitivity of welds. Thisthesis aims to study the behaviour of a weldedcomposite (GF/PA66 fabric) for quasi-static anddynamic loadings from an experimental pointof view and propose a numerical model of thewelded zone, including strain rate sensitivity. The methodology is based on an accurateknowledge of the substrates’ behaviour for anextensive strain rate range, both experimentallyand numerically. The welded composite time dependencyis investigated from quasi-static untilmoderate loading speeds using tensile testson lap joint specimens. The strain rate dependenceof the weld is difficult to quantify experimentallysince the sample behaviour combinesthe behaviours of the weld and the substrates. Therefore, a numerical uncoupling is achievedusing a viscous elastoplastic damage model forthe substrates and a traction separation law forthe weld (cohesive elements). The cohesive lawis identified in quasi-static and then applied todynamic tests. The final model, which may includeviscosity, is validated from quasi-static todynamic, allowing conclusions on whether or notviscous functions are necessary to describe thebehaviour of the welds

Full textUltrasonic additive manufacturing enables the production of components by generation of bonds between thin foils by continuous ultrasonic welds. Since produced parts have mechanical properties closely linked to the base material, the selectionof foil is decisive and needs to be taken into consideration. The three alloys studied are 5005, 5052 and 5056. They are composed of 0.8, 2.4 and 4.9% weight of magnesium, respectively. The presence of Mg increases notably their mechanical properties. The influence of Mg content on UAM was investigated with respect to the physical changes of foils induced by deformation, welding energy, produced joints, mechanical properties in the different building directions and microstructure at the interface. Joint resistance was found to be correlated to welding energy input, where dominant effects are temperature, welding speed and the amplitude of vibration. Energy can be raised by a decrease of the welding speed as well as the enhancement of the amplitude of vibration, leading to better joints properties but affecting the mechanical responses in other build directions. A large number of components were successfully built and showed anisotropic properties due to the process itself and the use of strain-hardened foils. When comparing tensile results with base material, properties in the longitudinal direction (X) are up to 105% of the foil used, 100 % for the transverse direction (Y) and 45 % for the deposited direction (Z). Depending on the condition tested, tensile deformation up to 25 % in the X-direction and 7 % for the Y-direction was observed. On the other hand, the 5056 alloy could not be adequately welded and showed multiple areas where residual surface oxide was present, paired with adrastic increase of hardness at the interfacecomparatively to other alloys.

Full textEmbedded welding defects, such as porosity, cracks, are generally formed during laser welding of aluminium. It is complicated to measure these defects with current NDI techniques. This work features the feasibility study for NDI techniques to detect such defects in lap-welded sheets of 5754 aluminium alloys, while taking into account accessibility and robustness in industrial conditions. The contact-less technique of laser ultrasound has finally been chosen. The generated sound wave is propagated into the material, it interacts with the embedded defects and therefore reports related data. The inspected material was lap-welded with a YAG laser. The use of signal processing is carried out to localise and size the defects, by means of a spring-mass simulation using FDTD. This simulation performs the reverse propagation of the sound wave, using Time-Reversal capabilities and so focuses the energy back on defects, therefore allowing an easier interpretation of ultrasound diagrams

Full textSafety and fatigue damage resistance of the mechanical components are related to the presence of residual stresses. Ths study shows the potential of the ultrasonic method using the Lcr waves to evaluate the residual stresses. Reliability of measurements was validated on two welded steel plates (P355 and P265), by comparing the results of the ultrasonic method with those of the hole drilling method. The first part of the study deals with the influence of the parameters (acoustic coupling, roughness, flatness, temperature, etc) on the accuracy and reproducibility of the ultrasonic measurements. ln the second part, the analysis of these parameters enabled designing of an optimized transducer, which improves the precision and the reproducibility. The third part of the study was reserved to the experimental characterization of the Lcr wave propagation The criteria allowing the evaluation of the penetration depth and the propagation range were obtained from the analysis of its velocity and attenuation. The last part of this work proposes an original calibration method, enabling the determination of the acoustoelastic constants in the three zones of the weld (PM, MZ and HAZ), in order to improve the accuracy of the stress measurements. The reproducibility of stress measurements was validated on two welded steels plates and it was estimated in the order of ±48 MPa

Full textDuring a repair welding process, the first step is to remove the material in the defected area, then refill this chamfer by welding rods. Since, the nickel based alloy, such as IN600, is sensitive to the phenomenon of stress-corrosion cracking, it must be ensured that the level of residual stress after welding is lower than the triggering threshold of stress-corrosion cracking. At this stage, the ultrasonic shot peening (USP) process can be used as the final finishing step. The aim is to introduce compressive residual stresses on the surface of the welded area in order to prevent occurrence of cracking. The objective of this study is to predict the level of residual stresses, induced by the ultrasonic shot peening, on structure made of IN600 repaired by multipass welding. To achieve this objective, an experimental study of the ultrasonic shot peening was carried out. Experiments similar to the “Almen” test were performed on thin and thick specimens. Influential parameters were identified. Experimental results, such as the level of residual stresses, were obtained. The originality of this work is that a three-dimensional modeling of multiple impacts, based on a Semi-Analytical Method (SAM), was implemented. This method can reduce significantly the computing time compared to finite element method, without sacrificing the quality of results. This was first validated by benchmarks for both single and multiple impacts, then proved by experiments. Moreover, a numerical simulation of welding was performed. The field of welding residual stresses should be used as the input data for the impact model. In fact, in this study, the residual state, was generated by alternatif bending test. These specimens were then treated by USP process with the parameters identified previously. As the final step, numerical results in terms of distortions and residual stresses were compared with the experimental data in order to validate the chaining of welding and peening simulation

Full textThis thesis focuses on the development of radioscopic (XR) and ultrasonic (US) data fusion for the automatic inspection of steel welded joints in a way to enhance the reliability of defect detection. The mathematical model is the theory of evidence of Dempster-Shafer. The study of physical laws leading to the formation of XR image and US signal helped for the development of a specific processing for the detection and matching of defects. Unfortunately, the detection of low amplitude signal defects also yields false alarm detection. We therefore developed a training stage to attribute a confidence level to a detected object. During this stage, different features of reference defects were calculated (contrast-to-noise ratio, area, elongation…) and compared to the interpretation of human expert analysis. We distinguish different areas of the features space in which some types of objects are predominant. A novel method has been developed for attributing a degree of belief to an unknown object taking both uncertainty and imprecision into account. Eventually, the data fusion stage consists in combining confidence levels to increase the confidence in the presence of a defect, but also to precise its nature and dimensions
