Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter explores how context influences bureaucracy. Bureaucratic behaviour and performance are interpreted as endogenous, shaped by decisions of political elites as to whether to direct their efforts towards providing public services or towards more narrowly political or private purposes. The chapter distinguishes among three broad contextual differences between the Western Cape and Eastern Cape—socio-economic, political, and institutional. It identifies the causal mechanisms through which these variables exert their influence, distinguishing between demand-side and supply-side influences. In the Eastern Cape, the consequence of an initially weak context is a low-level equilibrium trap in which incentives transmitted from the political to the bureaucratic levels reinforce factionalized loyalty within multiple patronage networks. By contrast, in the Western Cape, both demand-side and supply-side contextual variables support public service provision; however, weaknesses in ‘soft governance’ limit the positive impact.

Abstract:
For most women, marriage is a trap that society sets for them starting in childhood and into which they blindly fall as soon as adolescence is over. Having no experience with life, men, or themselves, they bind their existence to that of a stranger. Certainly there are some happy unions; many are tolerable. But for many couples who have come together by chance or through misunderstandings, conjugal life is a small hell. In general, the man most easily makes the best of it because he runs away from it; he works, he is independent. Supported by him, stuck in the home, the traditional woman is imprisoned in her function as wife, even if she can no longer bear it. After several years of slavery, many women dream of liberating themselves. If they really want it, divorce is one solution that is available to them. That is what Claire Cayron has chosen. And it has not been easy for her. But she has also come to understand how fallacious are some of the arguments that condemn it. She wanted her experience to benefit all women affected by this matter....

Breton, Gilles, Jean-Paul Laurens, and David Bel, eds.

Abstract:

Teseo, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.55778/ts877231984.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The teacher training in Professional and Technologic Education (PTE) has been done by streamlined, fragmented and discontinuous government programmes. Notwithstanding, law No. 13415/2017 has established notorious knowledge, which the trend is to consolidate the precarious policies of teacher training for PTE. In this paper, I have the purpose of discussing the norms for teaching method considering the recurrent and historical gap in the effective policies of the obligation of training for the degree level or pedagogy complementation for the practice of the teacher profession. Moreover, my experience in the training and development of teachers of PTE substantiated the debate about teaching and learning methodologies and provided testimonies which might be appreciated for interested in deepening their knowledge in this subject. After the discussion about norms aspects, we will board to the education and its nuances station. The first stop is in the applied neurosciences station, where the passengers can do a fast visit to cognitive aspects important for understanding how young people learning. The driver whistles announcing the departure and soon he arrives in the station of active methodologies of learning (AML). Although it is not the end, might the passengers give up to continue the trip because in this station the tour is prolonged and interesting, thus take more time and dedication of tourists. The guide announces that the guided tour starts by theoretical concepts of AML and will finish by testimonies which collaborate for the interaction of the theory and practice.

Thomas, Martin. Europe, the War, and the Colonial World. Edited by Nicholas Doumanis. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199695669.013.32.

Full text
Abstract:
The fact that we know the end points of formal colonial rule may lead us to forget that, for those involved, the process appeared less determined and more contingent. It is deceptively easy to trip over the supposed ‘milestone’ of the Second World War, ascribing undue influence to a failing capacity or will to rule among the colonial powers themselves. Such generalizations leave no room for agency among colonized peoples themselves and dismiss both rulers and ruled as essentially homogenous, almost preprogrammed to behave stereotypically as reactionaries or revolutionaries. Recognizing these interpretive problems, political analysts of European decolonization are now more divided over the extent to which the Second World War prefigured the end of European colonial rule. Much of the evidence for a strong causal link is powerful. By 1950 the geopolitical maps of eastern, southern, and western Asia were markedly less colonial. The justificatory language for empire was also different, evidence of the turn towards a technocratic administrative style that would soon become the norm in much of the global South. If basic political rights were frequently denied within dependent territories, a stronger accent on improved living standards gave imperial powers something with which to muffle the rising chorus of transnational criticism against colonial abuses. For all that, the concept of the Second World War as a watershed in the end of empires should not be accepted uncritically. This chapter explores the reasons why.
