Abstract:
Sabila is a plant that by his multiple applications in the medicine as in the naturist feeding and the cosmetics industry is taking a lot of importance at world-wide level. In addition, this is a crop that requires little amount of water to be developed satisfactorily, for this reason this crop is a good alternative to cultivate in the agricultural areas of the sonoran desert. The objective of this study was to determine the viability to produce sabila in the sonoran desert. During Summer 2002, two experiments of sabila was conducted, and distributed on two agricultural areas of the sonoran desert: The first experiment was carried out in two location of the agricultural region of Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico, (“The Nariz” and “The Papago” farm). The second experiment was carried out in two lacation of the agricultural region of Caborca, Sonora, Mexico, (“The Bizani” and “The Coast” area) being the less cold area. During the first year we evaluated the surviving plants and the sprout emission. The result indicated that the plant in the Sonoyta region is more affected for the winter frosts, and it is reflected in a smaller average of surviving plants, being this of 78.6% and 97.8% in Sonoyta and Caborca respectively. Also we observed an effect in the percentage of plants that present sprout emission, being this of 11.25% and 23.65% in Sonoyta and Caborca respectively. Apparently the agricultural area of caborca has suitable condition for Sabila production.

Abstract:
This article examines the cases of Sonoita-Elgin, Arizona, and Cananea, Sonora, as new wine geographies. To characterize these regions and show their potential, problems, and challenges, this article privileges the socio-anthropological study, the ethnographic method, and the analysis of the sense of place. The initial findings show first that the sense of place is not given by geography but by a set of specific interactions that conform the particular character of each region; and second, that the border context offers an opportunity for binational collaboration yet to be explored, which can be translated into competitive advantages and into alternative and innovative constructions of the sense of place. Due to the interpretative extent of this analysis and its focus on emerging production areas, it is expected to contribute to new discussions on the wine industry globally and, specifically, on the region of Sonora-Arizona in the U.S.-Mexico border region.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Groundwater resources in the southwestern United States are finite and riparian and wetland areas are vulnerable to aquifer overdraft and unregulated groundwater use. Environmental isotopes and water chemistry were used to distinguish water types, recharge mechanisms, and residence time along several reaches of the Sonoyta River and Quitobaquito Springs located near the U.S.-Mexico border. Areas located upgradient from the Sonoyta River, such as the Puerto Blanco Mountains and La Abra Plain, are supported by local recharge which corresponds to water from the largest 30% of rain events mainly occurring during winter. For Quitobaquito Springs, the δ18O and δ2H values are too low to be derived from local recharge. Stable isotope data and Cl/SO4 mass ratios indicate that the Sonoyta River supplied Quitobaquito Springs through flow along a suggested fault system. Based on these results, Quitobaquito Springs flow could be diminished by any activity resulting in increased groundwater extraction and lowering of water elevations in the Sonoyta River regional aquifer.

Abstract:
A hydrogeological study was performed on the cross-boundary valley between Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona and the Rio Sonoyta Valley, west of Sonoyta, Mexico. The study was carried out to evaluate present hydrologic conditions in the valley and to assess the impact of irrigation ground-water withdrawals in Sonora on water resources in the Monument and in particular the spring system in the Quitobaquito Hills. Through evaluation of available hydrogeologic data, three main aquifers were identified in the north half of the valley. These are the alluvial basin fill and fan system of La Abra Plain, the fractured crystalline rock system of the pediments of the Quitobaquito Hills, and the fluvial aquifer associated with the active channel of the Rio Sonoyta. A detailed evaluation of the location, discharge, and radioisotope composition of the springs in the Quitobaquito Hills was made to characterize the ground-water flow system supplying the springs and to evaluate the possible effects of irrigation withdrawals in Sonora on their discharge. Abstract:
Escultora

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The GreenSeeker Handheld crop sensor is an innovative diagnostic tool that farmers can use to improve their fertilizer use efficiency. Over the last decade, farmers in the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, Mexico, widely adopted the technology. Adoption led to significant increases in profits for farmers as well as avoided greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this success, adoption declined sharply in the 2015–2016 growing season. RTI researchers collaborated with the International Wheat and Maize Improvement Center (CIMMYT) to analyze the average costs and benefits of use of the GreenSeeker in addition to the amount of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. We provide the initial results of these analyses and lessons learned that can help inform dissemination of sustainable agricultural technology transfer.
