Résumé. Pour toute sous-vari ét é géométriquement irréductible $V$ du groupe multiplicatif $\mathbb{G}_{m}^{n}$, on sait qu’en dehors d’un nombre fini de translat és de tores exceptionnels inclus dans $V$, tous les points sont de hauteur minorée par une certaine quantit é $q{{(V)}^{-1}}>0$. On conna ît de plus une borne supérieure pour la somme des degrés de ces translat és de tores pour des valeurs de $q(V)$ polynomiales en le degré de $V$. Ceci n’est pas le cas si l’on exige une minoration quasi-optimale pour la hauteur des points de $V$, essentiellement linéaire en l’inverse du degré.Nous apportons ici une réponse partielle à ce problème : nous donnons une majoration de la somme des degrés de ces translat és de sous-tores de codimension 1 d’une hypersurface $V$. Les résultats, obtenus dans le cas de $\mathbb{G}_{m}^{3}$,mais complètement explicites, peuvent toutefois s’étendre à $\mathbb{G}_{m}^{n}$,moyennant quelques petites complications inhérentes à la dimension $n$.

Alors l'obstruction de Brauer–Manin au principe de Hasse (resp. à l'approximation faible) sur X est la seule. Dans des articles antérieurs nous n'avions obtenu ce résultat que sous des hypothèses plus fortes sur la nature des fibres. Le présent énoncé, obtenu grâce à une descente sur des variétés ouvertes, permet d'étudier des variétés données par des équations affines simples, sans calcul explicite d'un modè le projectif et lisse.

RésuméLes travaux de P. Bech sont principalement axés vers l’amélioration des qualités psychométriques des échelles d’évaluation psychiatrique déjá existantes. Dans ce but, P. Bech propose plusieurs techniques:– la plus importante, résidant dans l’utilisation du modéle logistique de Rasch: le modéle de Rasch permet de s’assurer, á l’encontre de l’analyse factorielle, de la valeur d’une somme de notes d’item en vue de la mesure d’une dimension. La position (paramétre) des item sur la dimension est estimée indépendamment de la population, et les estimations sont donc théoriquement absolues. Par conséquent, si le modéle est bien adapté, les paramétres d’un item doivent rester stables, quelles que soient les caratéristiques de l’échantillon (sexe, age, diagnostic par exemple). De surcroît, le test d’ajustement du modéle de Rasch permet une vérification de l’unidimensionnalité de l’échelle;– l’introduction, pour tous les degrés d’un item, d’une définition opérationnelle précise;– et enfin, la recommandation de regrouper les scores globaux d’une échelle en un nombre restreint de catégories.Bech propose également que plusieurs échelles ainsi remaniées soient réunies au sein d’un inventaire de psychopathologie générale qui posséderait plusieurs avantages, dont celui de dimensions mieux individualisées, sur les inventaires classiques.

RésuméLes débats récents concernant le mariage des couples de même sexe appellent à une réflexion plus large sur la rivalité entre les normes qui prétendent gouverner le mariage. Lors de ces débats, deux prétentions prirent l'avant-scène: l'une voulant que la loi suprême du mariage se trouve dans les traditions religieuses, et l'autre selon laquelle le mariage civil serait purement séculaire et trouverait sa loi suprême dans laCharte canadienne des droits et libertés. Cet article identifie certaines similarités au sein de ces deux prétentions. En particulier, chacune suppose erronément l'uniformité interne des communautés culturelles. Un examen de l'historique des amendements aux lois portant sur le mariage révèle qu'aucune de ces prétentions ne reflète fidèlement la tradition canadienne du droit du mariage. Les amendements aux lois concernant les degrés prohibés de liens de parenté et l'introduction de la loi fédérale sur le divorce illustrent le développement par le Parlement d'un mariage civil ou profane, par opposition consciente aux formes religieuses. Depuis les années 1880, les lois portant sur le mariage ont été modifiées périodiquement au motif que dans une société séculaire et plurielle, l'imposition de normes religieuses aux non-croyants est illégitime. Le Parlement ne s'est pas inspiré uniquement des normes explicites, dites autoritaires, mais a également considéré la pratique sociale comme une source de normes relatives au mariage. En somme, les réformes du passé révèlent une riche tradition de débat et de contestation, au cours de laquelle les Églises elles-mêmes n'ont pas constamment maintenu que les règles du mariage civil devraient être à l'image des règles religieuses. Contrairement aux prétentions des adeptes de la Charte, le mariage civil et le mariage religieux ne sont pas dénués de liens. Ils se situent au contraire dans une relation de tension et de différences qui requiert des ajustements constants.

Le mouvement insurrectionnel de 1837-38 a été interprété de multiples façons. Certains historiens y ont vu le fruit d'une poussée subite de colère et d'indignation, évidemment non préméditée, qui aurait été déclenchée par les résolutions de Lord Russell qui violaient un principe constitutionnel. Cette vue des choses nous paraît assez peu conforme à la mentalité canadienne-française. Le recours spontané aux armes n'a jamais été le moyen de prédilection utilisé par les Canadiens français pour réaliser leurs objectifs collectifs ou pour faire valoir leurs réclamations. La Fontaine qui les connaissait bien disait que leur arme principale était l'inertie et, ajoutons-le, l'agitation verbale. Les insurrections ne s'expliquent principalement ni par une réaction spontanée ni par le souci de défendre des principes, soit politiques, soit constitutionnels. La masse paysanne ne vivait pas encore à l'âge du libéralisme ni à celui de la démocratie. D'autres historiens, parfois les mêmes, ont parlé d'aboutissement logique d'un long conflit politique et constitutionnel, par conséquent non nationaliste en ses dimensions principales mais ultimement de portée nationale. Quelques-uns cependant, tel Filteau, n'ont pas hésité à postuler le caractère nationaliste des troubles de 1837-38. On a aussi parlé d'explosion de caractère réformiste ; on a opéré un rapprochement avec le mouvement chartiste anglais, avec celui de la démocratie jacksonnienne ; finalement, on a annexé à une même réalité les insurrections des deux Canadas. On a voulu montrer par là qu'il s'agissait en définitive d'abattre des oligarchies coloniales afin de promouvoir un système colonial édifié sur des bases plus libérales. En somme, le phénomène insurrectionnel, pour autant que ses origines réelles, son caractère, son ampleur et ses conséquences sont mis en cause, a été simplifié à l'extrême. On ne doit pas non plus oublier les condamnations systématiques, appuyées sur le droit canon et les préceptes moraux, dont ce mouvement a été l'objet de la part de nombreux historiens. À cet égard, Chapais fait figure de modèle. Il est parvenu à surclasser bien des historiens-clercs sur leur propre terrain, soit, celui de la ferveur moralisante. Que beaucoup de ces interprétations soient partiellement justes, on l'admettra volontiers. Mais ce qui, dans l'ensemble, fait le plus défaut, c'est une perspective globale qui restitue à ce phénomène son sens et sa complexité. Il nous paraît évident que si le mouvement insurrectionnel n'avait eu que des racines politiques, même lointaines, il n'aurait pas eu lieu. Il est non moins clair que s'il n'avait engagé que des principes abstraits, il n'aurait en aucune façon mobilisé la masse rurale, pas plus, du reste, que les professions libérales. La crise qui prépara l'explosion insurrectionnelle était d'abord économique et sociale avant d'être politique. La crise agricole, les tensions démographiques et sociales, la situation particulièrement critique des professions libérales, sont les fondements principaux de la réaction nationaliste qui mobilise certaines élites et rallie une portion importante de la masse. On ne niera pas non plus l'influence des idéologies autres que le nationalisme. Nous avons déjà dit pourquoi elles ont fait intrusion dans la société canadienne-française et quelles fonctions elles y ont assumées. Le libéralisme français et anglais, le radicalisme britannique, la démocratie jeffersonnienne et jacksonnienne ont, tour à tour et à des degrés divers, influencé les élites politiques en fonction même des besoins qui leur étaient propres. Mais ces courants idéologiques n'ont jamais rejoint la masse rurale pas plus que la minorité ouvrière. Au total, on dira que ces systèmes de valeurs et de pensée demeurent tributaires des fins poursuivies par l'idéologie dominante, le nationalisme. Ajoutons qu'avant de s'exprimer dans deux insurrections successives, la réaction nationaliste, parce qu'elle visait au contrôle des structures politiques au profit des professions libérales et de la nationalité canadienne-française, s'affirme au niveau politique. A partir de 1806, les conflits politiques s'enracinent en même temps que les malaises économiques, les pressions démographiques et les tensions sociales. De temps à autre, en regard même des améliorations passagères survenues dans l'un ou l'autre secteur, on assiste à un amenuisement relatif des conflits. Même si l'initiative majeure appartient à l'économique, l'interdépendance des différents niveaux d'activité éclate à chaque instant. Il en est de même de la mentalité et des oscillations de la psychologie collective qui se situent en regard même de ce contexte global. L'heure est au pessimisme, aux visions tragiques et à l'agressivité. G.-J. de Lotbinière écrira en 1852 : « Il me semble que nous sommes dans un âge où l'on sent plus vivement qu'autrefois. Nos Pères savaient conserver jusqu'à la fin leur vivacité et leur gaieté malgré toutes les vicissitudes de la vie, maintenant nous prenons tout au sérieux : vie intime, vie publique. Nos blessures ne se cicatrisent plus. À qui la faute ? ». On ne doit pas oublier non plus le rôle capital des personnalités dominantes, en particulier le rôle de Papineau. Ce dernier est à la fois le reflet de la situation, un de ses principaux définisseurs et l'instrument par lequel s'exprime la réaction nationaliste. Ses ambitions, ses intérêts et surtout sa personnalité en font l'homme de cette réaction Arrivé à la tête du mouvement nationaliste pour toutes sortes de motivations, il parvient à en conserver la direction pendant près de vingt-cinq ans. Après 1830, il forme même le projet de devenir président d'une république canadienne-française indépendante ou rattachée à l'Angleterre par des liens fort ténus. Mais Papineau était l'homme de l'opposition, de l'obstruction systématique et de l'agitation verbale. Il n'était pas taillé pour l'action. Idéaliste, doctrinaire, indécis, profondément tiraillé entre des tendances contraires, son royaume était la Chambre d'Assemblée. Il était davantage un symbole que l'animateur d'un mouvement révolutionnaire. En somme, rien ne le prédisposait, si ce n'est son ambition et la fidélité au mythe qu'il incarnait, à être le chef d'une insurrection et à le demeurer malgré tout. Pourtant ses attitudes politiques conduisaient directement à une prise d'armes. L'obstruction systématique qu'il pratique après 1831-32 et l'intransigeance de ses revendications ne pouvaient avoir d'autre issue à moins que l'Angleterre et la minorité britannique du Bas-Canada ne consentissent à des concessions globales. Or, l'une et l'autre se refusent absolument à envisager cette option. Au moment où débute l'année 1837, les conflits politiques paraissent insolubles. En somme, les insurrections de 1837-38 seraient l'aboutissement logique d'un ensemble de facteurs, dont certains jouaient depuis les premières années du XIXe siècle. Est-ce à dire que cela suffisait à garantir le succès de l'opération ?

A topological index is a numeric quantity assigned to a graph that characterizes the structure of a graph. Topological indices and physico-chemical properties such as atom-bond connectivity ABC , Randić, and geometric-arithmetic index GA are of great importance in the QSAR/QSPR analysis and are used to estimate the networks. In this area of research, graph theory has been found of considerable use. In this paper, the distinct degrees and degree sums of enhanced Mesh network, triangular Mesh network, star of silicate network, and rhenium trioxide lattice are listed. The edge partitions of these families of networks are tabled which depend on the sum of degrees of end vertices and the sum of the degree-based edges. Utilizing these edge partitions, the closed formulae for some degree-based topological indices of the networks are deduced.

This article addresses the question as to whether time is a primitive concept or rather is composed of conceptually more basic building blocks. After a brief analysis of tense-time mismatches with examples from English, Polish, Thai and Swahili, I present a hypothesis that time is conceptualized in terms of degrees of epistemic modality. Expressions with future, present and past reference are ordered on scales of epistemic commitment. I demonstrate that the theory of Default Semantics has no difficulty with representing tense-time mismatches in that it reflects the fact that information about temporality is conveyed via a variety of processes, some of them pertaining not to the processing of the lexicon or grammar but even to pragmatic inference. The theory also gives support to the thesis of time as modal detachment.

AbstractThe following theorems on the structure inside nonrecursive truth-table degrees are established: Dëgtev's result that the number of bounded truth-table degrees inside a truth-table degree is at least two is improved by showing that this number is infinite. There are even infinite chains and antichains of bounded truth-table degrees inside every truth-table degree. The latter implies an affirmative answer to the following question of Jockusch: does every truth-table degree contain an infinite antichain of many-one degrees? Some but not all truth-table degrees have a least bounded truth-table degree. The technique to construct such a degree is used to solve an open problem of Beigel, Gasarch and Owings: there are Turing degrees (constructed as hyperimmune-free truth-table degrees) which consist only of 2-subjective sets and therefore do not contain any objective set. Furthermore, a truth-table degree consisting of three positive degrees is constructed where one positive degree consists of enumerable semirecursive sets, one of coenumerable semirecursive sets and one of sets, which are neither enumerable nor coenumerable nor semirecursive. So Jockusch's result that there are at least three positive degrees inside a truth-table degree is optimal. The number of positive degrees inside a truth-table degree can also be some other odd integer as for example nineteen, but it is never an even finite number.

Chemical graph theory is a field of mathematical chemistry that links mathematics, chemistry, and graph theory to solve chemistry-related issues quantitatively. Mathematical chemistry is an area of mathematics that employs mathematical methods to tackle chemical-related problems. A graphical representation of chemical molecules, known as the molecular graph of the chemical substance, is one of these tools. A topological index (TI) is a mathematical function that assigns a numerical value to a (molecular) graph and predicts many physical, chemical, biological, thermodynamical, and structural features of that network. In this work, we calculate a new topological index namely, the Sombor index, the Super Sombor index, and its reduced version for chemical networks. We also plot our computed results to examine how they were affected by the parameters involved. This document lists the distinct degrees and degree sums of enhanced mesh network, triangular mesh network, star of silicate network, and rhenium trioxide lattice. The edge partitions of these families of networks are tabled which depend on the sum of degrees of end vertices and the sum of the degree-based edges. These edge partitions are used to find closed formulae for numerous degree-based topological indices of the networks.

Au moment où nous rédigeons ces pages, à deux décades près de l'an deux mille, Freud a déjà réhabilité le rêve, Breton l'instinct, Durand l'imaginaire, Mabille le merveilleux, Todorov le fantastique ; Otto, Bataille, Caillois, les historiens Éliade et Dumézil ont réévalué depuis longtemps le sacré et le religieux. Jean-Charles Falardeau écoute ces « maîtres » avec un talent critique dont nous voudrions rendre compte ici pour mieux nous interroger avec lui sur d'autres perspectives possibles de l'étude du phénomène religieux dans le milieu canadien-français. Rappeler ce qui, à notre point de vue, constitue l'essentiel du message de notre distingué compatriote dans ces matières pourtant ardues, vérifier dans la mesure du possible les avenues que nous ouvrent déjà plusieurs de ses intuitions sur l'imaginaire et le merveilleux, voilà une entreprise pour le moins audacieuse. Au premier abord, il est difficile d'imaginer que cet homme raffiné et distingué au possible, sociologue en plus et conduit comme tel à scruter des systèmes de valeurs fermes et à inspecter le champ bien concret des structures sociales de la paroisse, du village, de la famille, puisse un jour rêver de merveilleux et d'espaces spirituels inédits. Les mêmes quêtes spirituelles et les mêmes hésitations face aux changements culturels de notre temps nous conduisent à relire J.-C. Falardeau. L'académisme universitaire, l'aventure du surréalisme, l'affaire Borduas vingt ans plus tard, l'intervention courageuse de notre ami Robert Élie, des amitiés parallèles, tout ceci, nous l'avons partagé chacun à notre façon et sans même en discuter entre nous. Nous nous étions à divers degrés consacrés au service des étudiants. Il nous est aussi arrivé d'occuper successivement la même chaire de civilisation franco-québécoise à l'Université française de Caen. Dans de telles circonstances, il est presque normal que nos imaginations se soient souvent croisées. Où et quand? Mais quelque part, ne fût-ce que dans cet univers intérieur judéo-chrétien qui a enveloppé nos enfances respectives. Autant de prétextes qui nous amènent aujourd'hui à rejoindre Falardeau sur le terrain qu'il habite et défriche avec un acharnement digne de son sens du bien savoir et du bien faire. Surtout, l'occasion nous est enfin offerte de penser « sacré », « mystère », «imaginaire», «merveilleux» en compagnie d'un pionnier de la sociologie religieuse en Amérique française. Stimulus d'autant plus efficace que nous avons eu, au moins à trois reprises, l'occasion d'entendre les propos de notre collègue, avant qu'il ne les livrât à l'impression. La première fois, en avril 1962, ce fut à l'occasion du colloque de Recherches sociographiques ; la seconde fois, le 17 octobre 1971, à l'Institut supérieur des sciences humaines de l'Université Laval, lors du deuxième colloque sur les religions populaires. En 1973, le même J.-C. Falardeau proposait aux membres de l'Académie québécoise des sciences morales et politiques, à Montréal, une communication intitulée Problématique d'une sociologie du roman et publiée en 1974 dans Imaginaire social et littérature sous le titre déjà plus signifiant : « Le roman et l'imaginaire». Nous le revoyons encore assis à la table de conférence, sérieux et digne, ferme dans ses mots, bien aligné sur son texte ; nous l'entendons dire dans une langue froidement impeccable des paroles qui nous rassurent et nous interrogent tous. Sans qu'il le sache toujours, J.-C. Falardeau aura, par ses travaux autant que par la direction de ses recherches en matières religieuses, profondément influencé le Canada français depuis plus de vingt ans. Ses nombreuses études de sociologie et sa participation à l'évaluation périodique des croyances, rituels et agirs du plus grand nombre, ce que nous appelons provisoirement la religion populaire, restent de première importance. En somme, c'est presque un acte de piété, entendu au sens médiéval, que nous accomplissons en rendant hommage à celui dont nous avons si souvent relu les textes et pillé les bibliographies. Notre propos exact est de considérer tour à tour l'imaginaire, le merveilleux et le sacré pour mieux entrevoir, si possible, et toujours en compagnie de Falardeau, l'accès aux mystères qui définissent le sacré judéo-chrétien dans lequel la majorité de nos compatriotes canadiens-français ont vécu jusqu'à la limite de la pensée magique.

Properties of these polynomials are discussed, and recurrence relations for the coefficients are obtained. Background: The use of contraceptive devices predisposes women to vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) globally. Despite the high incidence of VVC and antifungal resistance to azoles, the genetic diversity and resistance pattern among contraceptive users in Nigeria is poorly investigated. This study therefore sought to characterize and determine the phylogenetic breadth of Candida species as well as their resistance to antifungal agents. Methodology: This study recruited 1,600 women using contraceptive devices who visited selected gynaecology and obstetrics clinics in northcentral Nigeria. Candida species were isolated and characterized using conventional methods and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Bayesian phylogenetic analysis was used to characterize the diversity of Candida species and primer-specific PCR was used to detect the presence of resistant genes. Agar well diffusion technique was used for the determination of antifungal susceptibility profiles. Data analysis was done by Kruskal-Wallis Chi-square test on R Console software version 3.2.2, followed by post-hoc Wilcoxon rank sum test with Bonferroni correction for multiple pairwise comparisons of means where there was a significant difference between the antifungal agents. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 710 (44.3%) out of the 1,600 women using contraceptive devices had VVC with five species of Candida identified in them. Although Candida albicans was the predominant (43.2%, n=307) species, other non-albicans Candida species include Candida (Nakaseomyces) glabrata (19.0%, n=135), Candida tropicalis (15.8%, n=112), Candida parapsilosis (8.9%, n=63), and Candida akabanensis (13.1%, n=93) which were phenotypically identified as Candida (Nakaseomyces) glabrata. All the Candida species showed varying degrees of susceptibilities to voriconazole, fluconazole and nystatin. However, resistance of C. albicans to fluconazole was 29.0%, C. tropicalis to nystatin (46.0%) and to voriconazole (14.0%), while C. akabanensis was 100.0% resistant to voriconazole and fluconazole. Kruskal-Wallis Chi-square test showed nystatin as the most effective antifungal agent against the Candida species (χ2=786.03, df=2, p<0.001). Also, resistant gene Erg11 was identified in all the Candida species that were phenotypically resistant to the antifungal agents tested. Conclusion: Women using contraceptive devices in northcentral Nigeria harbor phylogenetically diverse Candida species including C. akabanensis, an uncommon cause of VVC. Of these Candida species, C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. akabanensis were notable for multidrug drug resistance as well as harboring Erg11 resistance gene. Cette étude a donc cherché à caractériser et déterminer l'étendue phylogénétique des espèces de Candida ainsi que leur résistance aux agents antifongiques. Méthodologie: Cette étude a recruté 1600 femmes utilisant des dispositifs contraceptifs qui ont visité des cliniques de gynécologie et d'obstétrique sélectionnées dans le centre-nord du Nigeria. L'analyse des données a été effectuée par le test du chi carré de Kruskal-Wallis sur la version 3.2.2 du logiciel R Console, suivi d'un test de somme de rangs de Wilcoxon post-hoc avec correction de Bonferroni pour de multiples comparaisons par paires de moyennes où il y avait une différence significative entre les agents antifongiques. Le niveau de signification a été fixé à p<0,05. Résultats: Au total, 710 (44,3%) des 1600 femmes utilisant des dispositifs contraceptifs présentaient une VVC contenant cinq espèces de Candida. Bien que Candida albicans soit l'espèce prédominante (43,2%, n=307), d'autres espèces de Candida non albicans comprennent Candida (Nakaseomyces) glabrata (19,0%, n=135), Candida tropicalis (15,8%, n=112), Candida parapsilosis (8,9%, n=63) et Candida akabanensis (13,1%, n=93), phénotypiquement identifiés comme étant Candida (Nakaseomyces) glabrata. In this study, some properties of average degree have been studied. Effect of vertex deletion on this degree has been determined and a new proof of the handshaking lemma has been given. Using a recently defined graph index called o m e g a index, average degree of trees, unicyclic, bicyclic, and tricyclic graphs have been given, and these have been generalized to k -cyclic graphs. Also, the effect of edge deletion has been calculated. The average degree of some derived graphs and some graph operations have been determined.

wtt-reducibility has become of some importance in the last years through the works of Ladner and Sasso [1975], Stob [1983] and Ambos-Spies [1984]. It differs from Turing reducibility by a recursive bound on the use of the reduction. This makes some proofs easier in the wtt degrees than in the Turing degrees. Certain proofs carry over directly from the Turing to the wtt degrees, especially those based on permitting. But the converse is also possible. There are some r.e. Turing degrees which consist of a single r.e. wtt degree (the so-called contiguous degrees; see Ladner and Sasso [1975]). Thus it suffices to prove a result about contiguous wtt degrees using an easier construction, and it carries over to the corresponding Turing degrees.In this work we prove some results on pairs of r.e. wtt degrees which have no infimum. The existence of such a pair has been shown by Ladner and Sasso. Here we use a different technique of Jockusch [1981] to prove this result (Theorem 1) together with some stronger ones. We show that a pair without infimum exists above a given incomplete wtt degree (Theorem 5) and below any promptly simple wtt degree (Theorem 12). In Theorem 17 we prove, however, that there are r.e. wtt degrees such that any pair below them has an infimum. This shows that certain initial segments of the wtt degrees are lattices. Thus there is a structural difference between the wtt and Turing degrees where the pairs without infimum are dense (Ambos-Spies [1984]).

This paper focuses on resolving ambiguous jokes that were contemporaneous with 2011 revolution in Egypt. It observes that some jokes are easily understood by some and are unintelligible to others. The current study is a qualitative descriptive research that depends on collecting and analysing qualitative data. The data is classified into three groups each of which represents a group of ambiguous jokes corresponding to a degree on a proposed scale of specificity. This scale comprises linguistic and socio-pragmatic aspects that contribute to disambiguating such jokes and achieving the humorous effect. It finds that understanding a joke in general and an ambiguous one in particular depends not only on linguistic aspects. It also finds that the integration of the scale of specificity into the analysis proves crucial. The degrees on the scale help explain why a joke is understood by some and incomprehensible to others. Those degrees are relative in that what is deemed as a general degree may be regarded as a specific one to others.

It is considered that there is a fascinating issue in theoretical chemistry to predict the physicochemical and structural properties of the chemical compounds in the molecular graphs. These properties of chemical compounds (boiling points, melting points, molar refraction, acentric factor, octanol-water partition coefficient, and motor octane number) are modeled by topological indices which are more applicable and well-used graph-theoretic tools for the studies of quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPRs) and quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) in the subject of cheminformatics. The π -electron energy of a molecular graph was calculated by adding squares of degrees (valencies) of its vertices (nodes). This computational result, afterwards, was named the first Zagreb index, and in the field of molecular graph theory, it turned out to be a well-swotted topological index. In 2011, Vukicevic introduced the variable sum exdeg index which is famous for predicting the octanol-water partition coefficient of certain chemical compounds such as octane isomers, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorobiphenyls (PCB), and phenethylamines (Phenet). In this paper, we characterized the conjugated trees and conjugated unicyclic graphs for variable sum exdeg index in different intervals of real numbers. We also investigated the maximum value of SEIa for bicyclic graphs depending on a > 1 .

A new method was used to measure the degree of taper of Devonian plant axes: the width w of each compression fossil (measured at distance x along the length L of each axis) was normalized with respect to the basal width w0 of each axis w/w0 and plotted against normalized axial length x/L. the degree of taper was taken as the slope m of the simple linear regression of (w/w0)3 versus x/L. Comparisons among m showed that different levels of branching on some specimens were statistically distinguishable, as were sterile and fertile axes from the same specimen. In contrast, sterile axes of similar rank in the hierarchy of branching from different species were found to have statistically indistinguishable degrees of taper. The degree of axial taper was observed to slightly increase over geological time, although the limited number of taxa examined make any definite conclusion unwise. Provided fragmented plant axes can be identified as belonging to a particular species, the allometry of axial taper could provide a useful method distinguishing different levels of branching in a plant body. Additionally, because the method used to quantity the magnitude of axial taper was derived from engineering theory, it may ultimately provide quantitative insight into evolutionary changes of the “mechanical design” of columnar and lateral cantilevered axes.

We study autostability spectra relative to strong constructivizations (SC-autostability spectra). For a decidable structure$\mathcal{S}$, the SC-autostability spectrum of$\mathcal{S}$is the set of all Turing degrees capable of computing isomorphisms among arbitrary decidable copies of$\mathcal{S}$. The degree of SC-autostability for$\mathcal{S}$is the least degree in the spectrum (if such a degree exists).We prove that for a computable successor ordinal α, every Turing degree c.e. in and above0(α)is the degree of SC-autostability for some decidable structure. We show that for an infinite computable ordinal β, every Turing degree c.e. in and above0(2β+1)is the degree of SC-autostability for some discrete linear order. We prove that the set of all PA-degrees is an SC-autostability spectrum. We also obtain similar results for autostability spectra relative ton-constructivizations.
