Abstract:
Huguenot suffering inspired fast days, prayer meetings, and collections among Congregationalists in Massachusetts and Plymouth in the 1680s. Ministers used a variety of frameworks to motivate compassion for the French refugees. Some preachers considered the French plight to be the result of an Antichristian attack, one that might soon spread to New England. Others assumed Huguenot suffering generally was a result of their sinful neglect of the Sabbath, and that compassion and honor should extend to those who suffered cheerfully while upholding disciplined purity. As suspicions mounted that there were French Catholic spies within the refugee communities and local harassment increased, the prominent Huguenot minister Ezekiel Carré advocated an alternate framework for Christian charity. In his remarkable sermon,The Charitable Samaritan, Carré shifted the meaning of charity from an apocalyptic framework to one centered on active mercy for the wounded regardless of sect or nationality. A friend of Carré’s and Huguenot supporter, Cotton Mather incorporated Carré’s interpretation of the Samaritan story into his magisterial Bible commentary. Though always contested, Huguenot practices and rhetoric broadened the conversation over the meaning of charity in early New England.

Abstract:
This work investigates the gemological properties of the datolite from the famous field of Campotrera near Reggio Emilia in Italy, for a possible commercial use in the market. This mineral occurs in widespread multi-centimeter veins, together with calcite and prehnite, within polygenic breccias in basaltic ophiolites. The most common form for this datolite is the double wedge with a prism (110) and a pinacoid (001). The gems obtained are mixed or carré cut, colorless or salmon pink, transparent, with a vitreous luster and weight between 1 to 5 carats. They have high brilliance, transparency and birefringence, glassy luster, absence of cleavage. The major chromophore is probably Fe, which occurs as inclusion of hematite and ilmenite. Raman investigations highlighted different fluid inclusions. The primary are randomly distributed or, in some cases, follow the growth zones, while the secondary form aligned tracks along the microcracks. Fluid inclusions can be biphasic and made up by liquid + gas (L + G), generally >10 mm in size, and more rarely, monophasic, composed only by liquid (L) generally <10 mm. The gems extracted from the rough sample are very valuable but their delicacy requires attention in the cutting and preparation of the jewels.

Now in its fourth edition, William Carr's A History of Germany: 1815-1990 still ranks as one of the best single volume works available, succinctly delineating the political and diplomatic history of post-Napoleonic Germany. The first edition (1969) covered German history from 1815 until the end of World War II and received much acclaim and some criticism, though most of the criticisms were based upon differences in historical interpretation, not factual presentation. The second edition clarified Carr's historical interpretations and expanded the information on the Wilhelmine and Weimar eras. The third edition included a new chapter "The Two Germanies" covering 1945 to 1984. Carr's fourth edition "cleans up" the third edition's added chapter and includes a new chapter on Germany's reunification in 1990

Abstract:
The past 15 years have seen an explosion of interest in the scholarship of E.H. Carr. As a founding figure of the realist approach to International Relations, as a philosopher of history and as a historian of the Soviet Union, Carr made important contributions. His work on the post-war political organisation of Europe has been somewhat neglected. While not going so far as to argue for the introduction of ‘another E.H. Carr’ – Carr the European integration theorist – this article argues that Carr’s specific brand of realism has much to say not only about the establishment, but also about the subsequent development, of the European Economic Community. Carr’s realism was, we argue, capable of understanding change in international society. This understanding was grounded in an appreciation of the role of power and morality in international politics and stands in sharp contrast to the emphasis on the structural factors that are prized by neorealists. While Carr’s vision of post-war Europe has not materialised in its entirety, it captures some of the crucial fault lines that animate the European project. Building a bridge between European integration studies and Carr’s realism will provide a fruitful avenue through which classical realism can once again begin to engage with developments in international politics.

Educational philosopher Wilfred Carr claims that the formation of philosophy of education in accordance with the theory-centered paradigm of modernist philosophy is responsible for the miserable fact that educational practitioners take no interest in philosophy of education. A real contemporary philosophy of education, Carr suggests, would give up theory and the “foundationalist” idea of seeking a firm ground for practice outside of practice. The paper, firstly, takes up Carr’s debate with Paul Hirst on Carr’s notion of philosophy of education, and, secondly, moves on to inquire the interpretation of Aristotle’s practical philosophy by Hans-Georg Gadamer, whom Carr refers to. Finally, the paper outlines some merits of Gadamer’s hermeneutics that philosophy of education should adapt

Abstract:
Abstract John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), the literary breakthrough of one of the most successful novelists of our time, is a Cold War classic that changed the direction of spy fiction, and has gone far to redefining it. The story is compelling, bleak and without heroes: that causes are betrayed is no surprise, but here institutions betray their own men. Reviewers took the novel to be credible and realistic, qualities assumed even by some recent political and cultural studies of the Cold War; the author had, after all, served the British Foreign Office in Germany, and though he denied it for decades, he was from the first suspected to have been a spy. The novel’s authenticity grew with le Carré’s denials, reinforced by his published story of how he wrote it: it was an immediate and intensely personal reaction to seeing the Berlin Wall being built, written in a great rush within five or six weeks. The novel itself, however, tells a different story, which no competent intelligence officer could ever have believed. Its chronologies are variously impossible, both internally and in their historical anchorage. It assumes the existence of the Wall from the outset, but parts must have been composed before the Wall was built: as will appear, the story is composite, and it marches to contradictory calendars. The textual archaeology thus indicated is confirmed by some of le Carré’s own correspondence.

Abstract:
Recent work on Carr has looked beyond The Twenty Years' Crisis to the seeming anomaly of a political realist advocating regional integration in Western Europe, a welfare state at home, and a free hand for the USSR in Eastern Europe. Some have seen this anomaly, and Carr's successive appeasements of Germany and the USSR, as mere opportunism, but this paper finds a coherence in Carr's work deriving substantially from Mannheim. It was from Mannheim that Carr took not only the structure of The Twenty Years' Crisis, but also his characteristic post-positivist and interdisciplinary methodology, his belief in the policy role of the intellectual, his strong sense of the connectedness of foreign and domestic policy, his insistence on forms of international society that heavily discounted the sovereignty of small nations, and the besetting weaknesses of inadequately acknowledged historicism and elitism.

Abstract: We analyze Nero´s trajectory as a charioteer. His interest came from family tradition, since some Ahenobarbi had practiced the driving of cars. Nero trained for this sport and performed in circus as a charioteer. At first he did it privately until 64 A.D., when he started to participate in public shows. In his role of horse carriages driver, he ended up identifying himself with Phoebus, the Sun, and was represented in coins and sculptures with the radiated crown. <p>Even if the Gothic romance may be considered as one of the predecessors of detective fiction, the world model proposed by the latter seems to exclude what was the essence of the former: the irrational underlying the proposed world model. However, some of detective novel writers deploy Gothic conventions in their texts, thus questioning the rational order of the reality presented there. Such a genological syncretism is typical - among others - of the novels by John Dickson Carr. The paper is an analysis of Gothic conventions and their functions in four earliest novels by Carr, featuring a French detective-protagonist, Henri Bencolin. It concentrates on elements of Gothic horror, on the atmosphere of terror as well as the motif of the past intruding the present.</p>

My aim is to show with some precision why power, as used in political theorizing, is not only an inadequate but a confusing and even a deceiving notion. Through sociological approach, this article shows that JIL has played a significant role in dinamizing Islamic discouse in Indonesia. JIL proposed the “individualism” of Islamic thought; it is called “individual autonomy” in Berger and Luckman’s term, and “Islamic liberalism” in Binder and Kurzman’s one. Some methodologies applied by JIL in promoting its ideas are ijtihad freedom, hermeneutics, reactualization of Islamic doctrines, and “al-muhâfazhah ‘alâ al-qadîm al-shâlih wa al-akhdzu bi al-jadîd al-ashlah”.

Abstract: Why do some novels have a fast pace and others slow? Pace in narrative gauges the movement of a story in a specific direction with respect to time. Dialogue, descriptive summaries, chapter breaks, and other formal elements speed up or slow down the perceived tempo of a narrative. In Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy , John le Carré creates pace by exploiting the discrepancies between fabula and syuzhet . By his own admission, he prefers to begin a story as late as possible to induce pressure between the content of a story and the manner of its telling, a pressure that sets and regulates narrative pace.

We solve the corresponding Kolmogorov equation in the space L2(H,ν) where ν is an invariant measure and prove the "carré du champs" identity. The key tool are some sharp estimates on the derivatives of the solution. Our main assumption is that the viscosity is large compared with the norm of Q. As a byproduct, we give a new simple proof of the uniqueness of the invariant measure and obtain an existence result for a Hamilton–Jacobi equation related to a control problem.

Abstract:
This essay offers a discussion of some novels written in English in which the (Belgian) Congo forms the historical background to the fictional world, and that were published after that country became independent. Works by internationally well-known authors like Graham Greene (A Burnt-out Case, 1961) Barbara Kingsolver (The Poisonwood Bible, 1998), Robert Edric (The Book of the Heathen, 2000) and John le Carré (The Mission Song, 2006), fall under the spotlight, though references are also made to other and earlier relevant works. The texts represent different eras in a history of just more than a hundred years and all of these narratives relate, in a direct or implied manner, the nature and impact of a Christian missionary presence. Whilst genre, story line and narrative tone differ considerably in the individual books, the reader is exposed to a remarkable analogous range of subject matter and theme: amongst others the disappointments of the missionary ideal, the corruptive power of authority and the subservient part played by the female devotees. The plight of the Congo is narrated from a postcolonial point of view, though the story lines indicate that this vast country has always been, and still is, at the mercy of colonial exploitation, in which the missionary set-up played a crucial part. The novels also display a remarkable intertextual relationship through recurring motifs, titles, images and names and thus contribute to that body of work forming a tradition of (English language) Congo literature.

Abstract:
Streptococcussuis infections in pigs are often seen in major hog-producing countries. This bacterium is also a zoonotic agent affecting, for the most part, people in close contact with swine or pork by-products. The humanS. suisinfections have generally been sporadic; however, in recent years, this bacterium has strongly emerged as an important public health issue in Southeast and East Asia. Most human infections have so far been recognized to cause adult meningitis; however, a recent outbreak that occurred in Sichuan Province, China, involved a fatal disease, known as the streptococcus toxic-shock syndrome. Almost all human infections were caused by contact with diseased pigs or contaminated pork by-products, so reducing the number of virulent strains ofS. suisin hog populations is an important task in diminishing the level of risk in humanS. suisinfections. However, theS. suisstrains show various degrees of virulence, and many clinically healthy pigs may carryS. suis, some of which are avirulent and some of whichmust be virulent. Therefore, a rapid assay system to identify the virulent strains ofS. suisis urgently needed. Here, general information onS. suisis described, and the recent research progress on this bacterium is summarized.

Abstract:
In this article Steve Wilmer discusses adaptations of Greek tragedy that highlight the plight of the displaced and the dispossessed, including Janusz Glowacki's Antigone in New York, Marina Carr's Hecuba, and Elfriede Jelinek's Die Schutzbefohlenen, which is notably emblematic among appropriations of ancient Greek plays in referencing the problems facing refugees in Europe. He considers how this latter play has been directed in a variety of ways in Germany and Austria since 2013, and how in turn it has been reappropriated for new dramatic performances to further investigate the conditions of refugees. Some of these productions have caused political controversy and one of them has even been physically attacked by a right-wing group. Steve Wilmer is Professor Emeritus of Drama at Trinity College Dublin. He is the co-editor of ‘Theatre and Statelessness in Europe’ for Critical Stages (2016), Resisting Biopolitics: Philosophical, Political, and Performative Strategies (Routledge, 2016), and Deleuze and Beckett (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). Abstract:
This work evaluated the effect of drying temperature, drying time and post sprouting sampling time (as theprocess variables) on flowability and thermal properties of tigernut flour. Response surface methodologywas employed in the experimental design. The flowability of the bulk solid tigernut flour was determined byapplying uniaxial compression test of granules using universal testing machine Instron 3369 and byapplication of the principle prescribed by Carvarlho et al., (2011) and Schulze (2011) and. thermalcharacteristics using thermal conducting probe and calibrated copper calorimeter. The result showed that thestrength of the tigernut flour at 2.01 and 3.02g/cm3 were higher than that at 1.62g/cm3 in all the studiedtigernut flour samples. The flow functions ranged from 4.01 to 4.86. tigernut flour sample from seeds tosprouted for 36 hours dried at 50oC for 12 hours had the lowest function while tigernut flour sample fromseeds sprouted for 43.53hours, dried of 56.44oC for 12.02 hours (optimized sample) had the highest flowfunction of 4.86. The friction angles which describe the flow properties of the tigernut flour ranged from41.50o to 42.20o for internal friction angle while the wall friction angles varied between 47.80 and 48.5, theangle of internal friction between the tigernut flour granules generally increased with an increase in bulkdensity in the range of 1.62 to 3.02 g/cm3, frictional factor and half hopper angle ranged from 1.51 to 1.52and 22.8 to 23o respectively. Angle of repose, Hausner ratio and Carr’s index ranged from 27.82 to 44.19;1.17 to 1.34 and 15.34 to 26.13 respectively, with easy flowability flour. Thermal conductivity, specific heatcapacity and diffusivity varied between 0.054 and 0.083Wm-1K-1; 390.73 and 1069.6 Jkg-1K-1; 1.197  10-4and 2.713  10-4m2s-1 respectively. This information could be useful in the industrial processing andhandling of tigernut flour.

Abstract:
Vehicle activity is an integral component in the estimation of mobile source emissions and the study of emission inventories. In the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) model and the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB’s) Emission Factor (EMFAC) model, vehicle activity is defined for source types, in which vehicles within a source type are assumed to have the same activity. In both of these models, source types for heavy-duty vehicles are limited in number and the assumption that the activity within these source types is similar may be inaccurate. The focus of this paper is to improve vehicle emission estimates by improving characterization of heavy-duty vehicle activity using vehicle vocation. This paper presents results and analysis from the collection of real-world activity data of 90 vehicles from 19 vehicle categories made up from a combination of vehicle vocation, gross vehicle weight, and geographical area— namely, line haul—out of state; line haul—in state; drayage—Northern California; drayage—Southern California; agricultural—Southern Central Valley; heavy construction; concrete mixers; food distribution; beverage distribution; local moving; airport shuttle; refuse; urban buses; express buses; freeway work; sweeping; municipal work; towing; and utility repair. Results show that real-world activity patterns of heavy-duty vehicles vary greatly by vocation and in some cases by geographic region. Vocation-specific activity information can be used to update assumptions in EPA’s MOVES model or CARB’s EMFAC model to address this variability in emission inventory development.

Abstract:
The consumption of edible products strongly recommends the regular hygiene of oral cavity. Various dental products of allopathic and herbal origin are used as dentifrices. The dentifrices are considered safe and effective in terms of cleansing effect of oral cavity and antimicrobial effect against microbes causing bad smell and diseases such as gingivitis, pyorrhea etc. These characteristics of preparations are basically related to physicochemical properties of ingredients present in their composition and some how on directions of their use. In the present study, the marketed allopathic dentifrices coded as Brand I and II and herbal tooth powders coded as Brand III and IV were selected to analyze the impact of physicochemical properties of incorporated ingredients on their cleansing efficiency. The physicochemical characteristics studied were pH, bulk volume, tapped volume, tapped density, bulk density, true density, porosity, flowability, compressibility, compactability, cohesiveness, dispersability, Carr’s index, Hausner’s ratio, water soluble content, alcohol soluble content, foaming index, particle rearrangement behaviour and particle rearrangement constant. The antimicrobial effect of these powders was studied against Staphylococcus sorbinus, Staphylococcus salivarius and Lactobacillus acidophilus. It was observed that some of the physicochemical properties of all powders were different from each other. Marked antimicrobial effect of tooth powders was observed against pathogens. In all preparations, remarkable foaming index was analyzed that was generally considered responsible for cleansing effect.

Abstract:

French Literature in Sweden 1830–1900. Translation, Reception and Circulation The article presents some results from an international project on the introduction of French literature in Scandinavia during the 19th century. A point of departure is the database BREFS (Bibliographie du Réalisme Français en Scandinavie), containing the translations of novels, short stories, poetic works and theatre plays that were published in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in book form from 1830 to 1900. The Swedish part of the bibliography is in focus, consisting of as many as 1 500 translations, and a list of the seemingly most popular French writers in Sweden during the period is presented. With some exceptions, these writers are probably unknown to most Swedes, and not even mentioned in historical surveys of Swedish literature: Eugène Scribe, Eugène Sue, Charles Perrault, Anne H. J. Duveyrier, Henri Meilhac, Olivier Gloux, Michel Carré, Alice Durand and Jean F. A. Bayard. In fact, when it comes to the number or translations published, these authors by far exceed the wellknown representations of the French realist period, Stendhal, Balzac, Flaubert and Maupassant. I try, briefly, to relate these results to research that has been done by others on translation in the nineteenth century, the working conditions of the translators, the reception of French authors and the role of French theatre in Sweden, which was so successful at the time.

Abstract:
This paper analyses state-owned enterprises’ (SOEs) corporate governance, addressing whether there are differences between these and private enterprises that make it necessary to formulate a specific corporate governance theory for the former. This will be achieved through a case study based on Carris company, mitigating the lack of empirical knowledge in this field and taking a step forward by clearly proving what it is suggested by the literature: SOEs’ governance particularities actually influence their day-to-day business and financial viability. That helps to highlight the urgency to apply adequate corporate governance techniques to SOEs, more aligned with their characteristics. SOEs have a different legal status, more volatile operating goals, soft budget constraints, lack of public service contracts (and consequent mismatch of the corresponding compensatory allowances due for the public service provided), and different criteria for professional appointment and selection. More importantly, they suffer from multiple principals’ phenomenon: multiple principals, multiple problems. It is, therefore, recommended some changes regarding their corporate governance, such as the incorporation of the comply-or-explain principle; introduction of a code of best practices in the public managers’ appointment process; and contractual arrangements regarding the public service provided, with the multiannual allocation of the corresponding compensatory allowances.

The aim of the present work was to test some of the criteria for automaticity of spatial-location coding claimed by Hasher and Zacks, particularly individual differences (as intelligence invariance) and effortful encoding strategies. Two groups of subjects, 15 with mental retardation (Down Syndrome, mean chronological age, 20.9 yr.; mean mental age, 11.6 yr.) and 15 normal children (mean age, 11.5 yr.), were administered four kinds of stimuli (pictures, concrete words, nonsense pictures, and abstract words) at one location on a card. Subsequently, subjects were presented the items on the card's centre and were required to place the items in their original locations. Analysis indicated that those with Down Syndrome scored lower than normal children on the four tasks and that stimuli were better or worse remembered according to their characteristics, e.g., their imaginability. Results do not support some of the conditions claimed to be necessary criteria for automaticity in the recall of spatial locations as stated by Hasher and Zacks.

Among the production of harmful industry all over the world, including in our repub-lic, tobacco production occupies a significant place. In Uzbekistan, tobacco cultivation is car-ried out by workers of the Urgut district of the Samarkand region, which accounts for a large share in agriculture and brings significant economic profit. The available literature does not cover the issue of the effect of tobacco dust and pes-ticides in combination with uncomfortable microclimatic conditions on the organs and tissues of the oral cavity of tobacco growers. Some aspects of the mechanism of development of pathological changes in the oral cavity of tobacco growers are not specified in the conditions of Uzbekistan, and accordingly there is no data on adequate methods of their prevention and treatment [1,3]. In this regard, there is a need to study the features of the clinic and the course of the main dental diseases in tobacco growers in order to develop a set of organizational, sanitary, hygienic and therapeutic and preventive measures aimed at improving the quality of the production environment, pre-venting the development and reducing the frequency of dental morbidity among tobacco growers.

Abstract:
Literature relies heavily on mythology. Myths are stories of deities, monsters or immortals which are transformed from one generation to the other. In addition to documenting the religious and cultural experiences of a specific community, myths also outline the consequent literary, artistic and dramatic customs. Some Greek myths have survived for thousands of years because they accurately depict historical events, cultural values, and trends. Among the most famous classical myths are the myths of Medusa and Medea. As for the myth of Medusa, the earliest known record was found in Theogony (700BC) by Hesiod (8 th-7th century BC). A later version of the Medusa myth was made by the Roman poet Ovid (43BC –17/18AD), in his “Metamorphoses” (3-8 AD). Then again, Medea is a tragedy produced in 431 BC by the Greek playwright Euripides(480–406BC) based on the myth of Jason and Medea. Both Medusa and Medea are among the most fascinating and complex female protagonists in Greek mythology which have captivated many writers and playwrights for ages. In the twentieth century, there were many adaptations of both mythological figures; among these adaptations were those made by contemporary American and Irish women playwrights like Carol Lashof (1956-) and Marinna Carr (1964-). This paper examines the myths of Medusa and Medea and analyses the ways these myths are borrowed, refashioned and exploited in Lashof’s Medusa’s Tale (1991) and Carr’s By the Bog of Cats (1998). Both playwrights explore hidden dimensions of the traditional myths, combining elements from the old and modern worlds.

Purpose: To investigate the binding properties of the modified (acid treated) millet (Pennisetum glaucum) starch mucilage in comparison with maize starch BP on some physical characteristics of paracetamol tablets. Method: Pennisetum glaucumstarch was extracted and subjected to acid modification. Mucilages of the modified starch and maize starch BP was used to prepare paracetamol granules and tablets by wet granulation method at various concentrations. The granules were characterized for their flow properties while the tablets were characterized for their tablet parameters. In vitro drug release and FTIR compatibility studies was carried out on the tablet formulation. Result: The starch extraction and modification processes gave a percentage yield of 53.65 and 58.74 % respectively. Prepared granules were free flowing with Carr’s indices, Hausner’s ratios and angles of repose of ≤15%, ≤1.2 and <31°, respectively. At all binder concentrations, the tablets showed satisfactory hardness (5.15-7.75 kp), friability values (< 1.0 %) and disintegration times (<15 min). The dissolution studies showed that all batches achieved over 70 % drug release in 30 min while the compatibility study revealed no interaction between paracetamol and the modified starch. Conclusion: The results from the study show that modified millet starch when used as a binder in paracetamol tablets exhibited comparable granule and tablet properties with maize starch BP. __________ In 1907, artist Gerardo Murillo, Dr. Atl, made an inventory of a 295 piece collection donated to the state by Alejandro Ruiz Olavarrieta, a businessman and politician from Puebla. This RESEARCH proposes an approach to this compilation from the analysis and systematization of said relationship, through the titles and attributions established by the artist, as well as from the public exhibition organized two years later at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (ENBA, for its acronym in Spanish, National School of Fine Arts). This exercise will allow some questions to be asked about the process of conforming and conserving the Academy’s collections, and the tracking of some of its pieces today.
