Abstract:
A new analytical method for the analysis of interactions between the superstructure and foundation and foundation soil of a tall building is formulated. The computational model of a structural system and its foundation are simplified equivalently and continuously into a three-dimensional model, a combination of thin-walled tubes on a semi-infinite elastic subgrade. The various stiffness coefficients for evaluating elastic strain energy stored in foundation soil are as well derived by using the principle of energy equivalency. Some satisfying conclusions are obtained by the interaction analysis for the tube-in-tube structural system adopted by Guangdong Guomao Building.

Abstract:
Abstract Effect of geometric nonlinearity onfree vibration behaviour of a non-uniform in-plane inhomogeneousplate on elastic foundation is carried out with an emphasis on mode switching phenomenon. The formulation is semianalytic displacement based and it is carried out in two distinct steps. First, the static problem is solved to find out the unknown displacement field by using minimum total potential energy principle. Secondly, subsequent dynamic problem is set up as an eigenvalue problem on the basis of the known displacement field. The governing set of equations in dynamic problem is obtained by using Hamilton’s principle. In static analysis, unknown co-efficient of the governing equations are solved using an iterative method, which is direct substitution with relaxation method. The dynamic problem is solved with the help of intrinsic Matlab solver. The results of the present method are validated with existing data. Backbone curve corresponding to different combinations of systemparameters are presented in non-dimensional plane.Mode switching is observed to occur in certain specific situation. The linear and nonlinear mode shapes are also furnished to support the presence of switching phenomenon.

Abstract:
Mosul dam is an earth-fill embankment located north of Iraq on the Tigris River forming a reservoir with 11.11 km3 water storage capacity which is the largest dam in the country. The dam is built on a rock bed foundation, in which the dissolution process is dynamic in the zone where gypsum and anhydrite layers present. During the construction development seepage locations were found in the dam foundation and the grouting process is in progress until now to control this problem. Therefore, the possibility of the Mosul dam break is highlighted by previous studies. In this research, a FORTRAN code based on the finite volume method is modified to solve the two-dimensional shallow water equations and simulating the Mosul dam break. The computational domain discretized using unstructured triangular mesh. The solver applied Harten lax van leer with contact (HLLC) wave approximate Riemann solver to calculate the cell interface fluxes, and the semi-implicit scheme employed to solve the friction source term. The numerical scheme applied to two benchmark test cases, and the results showed that the presented model was robust and accurate especially in handling wet/dry beds, mixed flow regimes, discontinuities, negative water depths, and complex topography. The results of this study demonstrate that flood waves may reach the center of Mosul city in < 6 h and water depth may rise to 34 m after 7 h of Mosul dam breaking. Finally, the simulation results of the Mosul dam break were used to prepare an emergency action plan.

Abstract:
We present an efficient and robust numerical model for the solution of the Shallow Water Equations with the objective to develop the numerical foundation for an advanced free surface flow solver. The numerical solution is based on an explicit Finite Volume scheme on a staggered grid to ensure the conservation of mass and momentum across flow discontinuities and wet-dry transitions. This leads to an accurate numerical solution at low computational cost without the need for Riemann solvers. The efficiency of the lean numerical structure is further optimized through a CUDA-GPU implementation.Recorded Presentation from the vICCE (YouTube Link): https://youtu.be/xMnK_r7Tj1Q

Abstract:
In this paper, a new algorithm for solving the vehicle/track dynamic interaction problem is developed, aimed at reducing the computational cost. The algorithm called Advanced Solver Algorithm (ASA) uses the full Newton–Raphson incremental-iterative method in conjunction with the Newmark integration scheme to solve the equilibrium equations of the coupled vehicle/track system in time domain. Considering the track as a beam resting on a viscoelastic foundation and each vehicle as a wagon with ten degrees of freedom, the governing differential equations of motion of the vehicle/track system were derived. The wheel/rail contact was considered as a nonlinear Hertz spring and consequently the vehicle/track nonlinear dynamic interaction problem was solved. A comparison between the results of the ASA and those of the most advanced algorithm available was made to evaluate the efficiency of the ASA. It is confirmed that using the ASA can result in 40–70 % of reduction in computational cost.

Nicholson, John Corbett. "Design of wind turbine tower and foundation systems: optimization approach." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2011. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1042.

Full text
Abstract:
A renewed commitment in the United States and abroad to electricity from renewable resources, such as wind, along with the recent deployment of very large turbines that rise to new heights, makes obtaining the most efficient and safe designs of the structures that support them ever more important. Towards this goal, the present research seeks to understand how optimization concepts and Microsoft Excel's optimization capabilities can be used in the design of wind turbine towers and foundations. Additionally, this research expands on the work of previous researchers to study how considering the tower and foundation as an integral system, where tower support conditions are not perfectly rigid, affects the optimal design. Specifically, optimization problems are formulated and solved with and without taking into account the effect of deflections, resulting from the foundation's rotational and horizontal stiffness, on natural frequency calculations. The general methodology used to transcribe the design of wind turbine towers and foundations into an optimization problem includes: 1) collecting information on design requirements and parameter values 2) deciding how to analyze the structure 3) formulating the optimization problem 4) implementation using Microsoft Excel. Key assumptions include: 1) use of an equivalent lumped mass method for estimating natural frequency 2) International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61400-1 extreme loading condition controls design (i.e. fatigue loading condition is not considered) 3) extreme loads are obtained from manufacturer provided structural load document that satisfies loading cases outlined in IEC 61400-1 4) wind forces on the tower are calculated in accordance with IEC 61400-1 5) optimization variables are continuous. The sum of the tower material and fabrication cost and the total foundation cost is taken as the objective function. Important conclusions from this work include: 1) optimization concepts and Microsoft Excel's optimization capabilities can be used to obtain reasonable conceptual level designs and cost estimates 2) detailed designs and cost estimates could be achieved using a solver capable of handling discrete optimization problems 3) considering the tower and foundation as an integral system results in a more expensive, but safer, design 4) for the assumed parameter values, the constraint on the tower's natural frequency was found to control the tower design and the bearing capacity constraint was found to control the foundation design 5) relaxing or tightening the limit on the natural frequency will result in the greatest benefit or penalty, respectively, on the optimum solution.

Abstract:
AbstractHigher-order functions have become a staple of modern programming languages. However, such values stymie concolic testers, as the SMT solvers at their hearts are inherently first-order.This paper lays a formal foundations for concolic testing higher-order functional programs. Three ideas enable our results: (i) our tester considers only program inputs in a canonical form; (ii) it collects novel constraints from the evaluation of the canonical inputs to search the space of inputs with partial help from an SMT solver and (iii) it collects constraints from canonical inputs even when they are arguments to concretized calls. We prove that (i) concolic evaluation is sound with respect to concrete evaluation; (ii) modulo concretization and SMT solver incompleteness, the search for a counter-example succeeds if a user program has a bug and (iii) this search amounts to directed evolution of inputs targeting hard-to-reach corners of the program.

Abstract:
Gravity-based offshore foundations generally consist of a bottom slab and one or more cylindrical shafts on top of it. The geometry of the structure can strongly affect the flow pattern, dynamic wave pressure and further soil response and the liquefaction risk in the vicinity of the foundation. In this work, gravity-based foundations with bottom slabs of cylindrical shape and hexagonal prismatic shape are investigated. An integrated wave-structure-seabed interaction model applied in this work is developed in Open-FOAM, incorporating a nonlinear wave solver, a linear elastic structure solver and an anisotropic Biot’s poroelastic soil solver consisting of consolidation and liquefaction modules. Soil consolidation behavior in the presence of the foundations is investigated. It is found that the corners of the hexagonal foundation cause stress concentration in the soil. Therefore the initial effective stress around the hexagon corners is relatively high. Then, fully nonlinear waves modelled by fifth-order stream functions are simulated. Wave-induced pressure distributions and momentary liquefaction depths around the foundations are predicted.

Abstract:
In order to prevent the future risk of soil and structural failures, it is essential to evaluate the dynamic seabed soil behaviors in the vicinity of the offshore foundations under dynamic wave loadings. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical analysis is conducted on the interaction between waves, seabed soil and a gravity-based wind turbine foundation. An OpenFOAM based numerical code developed by Tang [1]for wave-structure-seabed interaction is applied. The nonlinear waves are modeled by solving the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow. The dynamic structural response of the foundation is computed using a linear elasticity solver. The transient responses of the seabed are solved by an anisotropic poro-elastic soil solver. The dynamic interaction between different physical domains is implemented by boundary condition coupling and updating in the integrated FVM based framework. The dynamic wave pressure on the structure and the seabed, the elastic responses of the structure and the changes of the pore pressure, shear stress and seepage flow structure in the seabed are investigated. Highest wave-induced shear stress along the foundation is predicted by solving the deformable structure model. For the seabed soil in the vicinity of the foundation, it is found that the presence of the foundation affects the soil responses by amplifying the wave induced shearing effect on the underlying seabed. Vertical distributions of the pore pressure in the seabed beneath the foundation are investigated with different angles relative to the wave propagation direction. A parametric study of isotropic and anisotropic soil permeability is performed and demonstrates that for the simulated soil in this work, the consideration of the anisotropic permeability is suggested.

Abstract:
Two-dimensional irregular waves on a sloping bed and their impact on a bottom mounted circular cylinder is modeled by three different numerical methods and the results are validated against laboratory experiments. We here consider the performance of a linear-, a fully nonlinear potential flow solver and a fully nonlinear Navier-Stokes/VOF solver. The validation is carried out in terms of both the free surface elevation and the inline force. Special attention is paid to the ultimate load in case of a single wave event and the general ability of the numerical models to capture the higher harmonic forcing. The test case is representative for monopile foundations at intermediate water depths. The potential flow computations are carried out in a two-dimensional vertical plane and the inline force on the cylinder is evaluated by the Morison equation. The Navier-Stokes/VOF computations are carried out in three-dimensions and the force is obtained by spatial pressure integration over the wettet area of the cylinder. In terms of both the free surface elevation and the inline force, the linear potential flow model is shown to be of limited accuracy and large deviations are generally seen when compared to the experimental measurements. The fully nonlinear Navier-Stokes/VOF computations are accurately predicting both the free surface elevation and the inline force. However, the computational cost is high relative to the potential flow solvers. Despite the fact that the nonlinear potential flow model is carried out in two-dimensions it is shown to perform just as good as the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes/VOF solver. This is observed for both the free surface elevation and the inline force, where both the ultimate load and the higher harmonic forces are accurately predicted. This shows that for moderately steep irregular waves a Morison equation combined with a fully nonlinear two-dimensional potential flow solver can be a good approximation.

Abstract:
Two fully nonlinear irregular wave realizations with different significant wave heights are considered. The wave realizations are both calculated in the potential flow solver Ocean-Wave3D and in a coupled domain decomposed potential-flow CFD solver. The surface elevations of the calculated wave realizations compare well with corresponding surface elevations from laboratory experiments. In aeroelastic calculations of an offshore wind turbine on a monopile foundation the hydrodynamic loads due to the potential flow solver and Morison’s equation and the hydrodynamic loads calculated by the coupled domain decomposed potential-flow CFD solver result in different dynamic forces in the tower and monopile, despite that the static forces on a fixed monopile are similar. The changes are due to differences in the force profiles and wave steepness in the two solvers. The results indicate that an accurate description of the wave loads is very important in aeroelastic calculations especially in cases where the aerodynamic loads and damping are insignificant.

Abstract:
This paper describes the recent developments regarding a new concept for deep sea offshore vertical axis wind turbines. The concept utilizes a cylindrical foundation rotating in the water. The 2D Navier-Stokes solver EllipSys2D has been used to investigate the interaction between the rotating foundation and a water flow stream passing the turbine. Lift and drag forces, and the friction moment on the rotating foundation of the turbine have been computed. The calculations are repeated for different operating conditions of the wind turbine on a range of rotational speeds. The Reynolds number, based on the diameter of the foundation, is 5×106.

Abstract:
When preliminarily investigating offshore wind turbine tower concepts it is common to develop optimization software for determining the best possible structural layout. This type of optimization procedure requires a large number of iterations to determine the best possible design and can be quite time consuming, particularly if the dynamic performance of each structure is to be investigated using an aero-hydro-servo-elastic type solver. When performing this type of “dynamic optimization” it is convenient to simply assume fixed boundary conditions at the soil-structure interface and ignore the dynamic properties of the foundation. Using fixed conditions allows for each of the layouts to be compared quickly and makes the computer models simple to create and more efficient in computation than if the foundation is included. Alternatively, the foundations of offshore wind turbine support structures can be represented with several different methods of varying complexity and detail. The most widely used method is the use of a distributed spring model commonly known as the p-y method. This approach is the primary method in most offshore wind turbine design standards for determining the static and cyclic reaction of offshore piles. In this work, two offshore wind support structure layouts are modeled and analyzed in the wind turbine analysis program HAWC2. Dynamic time series analyses under operating conditions are carried out for each tower with fixed conditions and with foundation models based on the p-y method in order to determine the appropriateness of utilizing fixed foundation conditions for optimization procedures.

Abstract:
A fully nonlinear 3D Navier Stokes solver with VOF (Volume of Fluid) treatment of the free surface is used to reproduce two extreme laboratory wave impacts on a gravity wind turbine foundation. The wave climate is irregular waves with a current. Numerical results for inline force, overturning moment and run-up are compared to measurements. The extreme wave loads for the two events are associated with slamming onto the under side of a horizontal platform placed 9.1m above the still water level. For such impacts, the computed wave loads are strongly sensitive to the shape of the incoming waves. A comparison with a Morison-type estimation of the wave loads shows that this much simpler approach can reproduce the overall trend of the wave load history, but not the extreme moment.

Abstract:
Wave load and wave run-up is a very important issue to offshore wind turbine foundations. These are often installed in relatively shallow water on for instance sand banks. Therefore the non-linear shoaling and subsequently the force and run-up are important to address. The paper presents a method to combine a Boussinesq model with a CFD model. This gives an accurate tool to estimate wave loads on the foundations at acceptable computational times.

Abstract:
The paper reports on the predictive prospects of the Smoothed-Particle-Hydrodynamics (SPH) method for jacket launching and foundation installation simulations. The type of considered applications usually involves the interaction between floating structures (e.g. barges and jackets) as well as structures and seabeds. Such scenarios pose challenges to mesh-based solvers, particle methods like SPH therefore are of advantage. The presented procedure captures floating body motions using a quaternion based 6DOF motion solver. Fluid/Soil interaction is predicted by an adequate suspension model. An efficient parallelization strategy is applied together with a dynamic variable resolution approach to handle large computational domains and structural details requiring a rather fine discretization.
