Abstract:
This book explains how Facebook devolved from an innocent social site created by Harvard students into a force that makes personal life a little more pleasurable, but at the same time makes democracy a lot more challenging. It talks about the hubris of good intentions, a missionary spirit, and an ideology that sees computer code as the universal solvent for all human problems. It also addresses how "social media" has fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world, from facilitating Russian meddling in support of Donald Trump's election to the exploitation of the platform by murderous authoritarians in Burma and the Philippines. The book analyzes the increase of recognition and reaction against Facebook's power in the last couple of years. It reviews the growing public concern about the influence Facebook exerts over lives and politics around the world.

Abstract:
This monograph describes various methods for solving deformation problems of particulate solids, taking the reader from analytical to computational methods. The book is the first to present the topic of linear elasticity in mathematical terms that will be familiar to anyone with a grounding in fluid mechanics. It incorporates the latest advances in computational algorithms for elliptic partial differential equations, and provides the groundwork for simulations on high performance parallel computers. Numerous exercises complement the theoretical discussions, and a related set of self-documented programs is available to readers with Internet access. The work will be of interest to advanced students and practicing researchers in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, computational methods, and developers of numerical modeling software.

Soltan, Rita. Solving the Reading Riddle. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216016465.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores what the past 75 years of reading instruction has meant to children, teachers, and parents, and how children's librarians and school media specialists are a crucial part of the developing philosophy and strategy. As a children's librarian, you are increasingly being called upon to support schools and parents in teaching children to read—from early literacy initiatives and read-alouds to parent workshops and collection development endeavors. Yet, if you're like most public librarians, you probably have no clue as to what reading strategies other educators use. Understanding reading instruction theory and practice can help you function better in these roles and communicate more effectively with other educators and parents. Solving the Reading Riddle: The Librarian's Guide to Reading Instruction explains the theories and shows you how to effectively integrate reading instruction theory into your roles as reading advocate, family reading coach, partner with educators, and keeper of the books. Designed for public librarians, this book is also beneficial reading for LIS students in children's librarianship courses, and for teacher librarians needing more information on this topic.

Halpin, Harry. Solving the Frame Problem Socially. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198801764.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
The question of how technology impacts the existing forms of epistemology and forms a new kind of socially extended epistemology deserves a thorough philosophical investigation. Traditionally, epistemology has been bound to a vision of knowledge as internal beliefs justified via logical inference. This view was externalized by artificial intelligence research into knowledge representation. Yet historically this form of research has failed, with knowledge representation being unable to cope with the Frame Problem: How to capture a changing and fluid world in a formal system that can be mechanized? Today, people use search engines, tagging, and social media to leave an enactive “social trail” through the vast amount of information, creating new kinds of distributed and extended knowledge that challenges traditional theories of epistemology. This shaping of the epistemic environment allows humans to socially solve the Frame Problem and extend the bounds of knowledge via technological means.

Schotter, Jesse. Solving the Problem of Babel. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474424776.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
By situating James Joyce within a larger discourse about the problem of Babel, this chapter show how hieroglyphs were used to make arguments for the origin of linguistic differences. The journal transition—in which Joyce’s work was serialized—served as a clearinghouse for ideas about how a new linguistic unity might be forged: either through Joyce’s Wake-ese or through the philosopher C. K. Ogden’s universal language of Basic English. Fascinated by these theories of universal language and drawn to the anti-imperialist politics underlying them, Joyce in Ulysses andFinnegans Wake turns to visual and gestural languages—film, hieroglyphs, advertisements, and illuminated manuscripts—in an effort to subvert theories of ‘Aryan’ language and imagine a more inclusive origin for the world’s cultures. The commonality of writing and new media become in Joyce a political gesture: a way of insisting on the unity of all races and languages in a mythic past against Nazi claims for racial purity.
