Abstract:
This article presents constraints of solo female travelers to Africa based on their blogs reflecting their pretravel and during-travel constraints and the negotiations they adopted to energize their desire to travel to and within African countries. The study employs netnographic research methodology to understand complex social phenomena and assist researchers in developing themes from female travel bloggers' experiences of solo travels to Africa. Using content analysis, the findings show that the constraints were mainly interpersonal, external, as well as intrapersonal. Family, friends, and the media presented solo women travelers with these constraints about Africa, which is perceived as a socially constructed "men's space." The study finds that despite these constraints, the bloggers felt adventurous and were satisfied with their African experience.

Abstract:
Solo travel continues to be an under-researched area in the field of tourism, hospitality, and events. After the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become necessary to review the knowledge acquired so far. In addition, the 2030 Agenda calls for more studies to understand the relationship between gender and tourism. Because of these facts, and with the aim of analyzing the progress and gaps in academic publications on solo travel in recent years, a bibliometric and content analysis review of the existing scientific literature on solo travel published in Scopus, ProQuest, and the Web of Science in the last 5 years was carried out, focusing the analysis on the gender perspective applied to these investigations. The results showed that research focused on solo travel should increase; this research should segment solo travelers, and comparisons should be realized between those segments and with other tourists who travel accompanied. To do so, a consensual definition of solo travelers is necessary. In addition, research should be extended to other regions and expand the field of analysis beyond motivations, experiences, or constraints. Research focused on solo female travelers should continue because while women cannot travel under the same conditions as men effective gender equality cannot be achieved.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to explore the meanings of solo travel for Asian women, focussing on how Asian women construct and negotiate their identities in the heteronormalised, gendered and Western-centric tourism space. Design/methodology/approach In-depth interviews were conducted with 35 Asian solo female travellers from ten Asian countries/societies and analysed using constructivist grounded theory. The interpretation was guided by a critical stance and intersectionality lens. Findings The findings show that solo travel provides a means for self-discovery but the path was different for Asian women, for whom the self is constructed by challenging the social expectations of Asian women. Western-centric discourse was identified in the participants’ interactions with other (Western) travellers and tourism service providers, as well as in the ways these Asian women perceive themselves in relation to Western travellers. In addition to gendered constraints and risks, the findings also reveal the positive meaning of being Asian women in the gendered tourism space. Research limitations/implications By labelling Asian women, the study risks adopting an essentialised view and overlooking the differences within the group. However, this strategic essentialism is necessary to draw attention to the inequalities that persist in contemporary tourism spaces and practices. Originality/value This study investigated Asian solo female travellers, an emerging but under-researched segment. It provides a critical examination of the intersectional effect of gender and race on identity construction for Asian solo female travellers. This study shows the need for a more inclusive tourism space.

Abstract:
Before the COVID pandemic, solo travel was getting more and more popular – especially among women travelers. Both demographic, social trends, and inner motivations enhanced the popularity of this type of travel. The aging society and the single lifestyle increased the demand on the one hand, while on the other hand, the desire for self-realization, to find new ways of life, escapism, the thirst for self-confidence drive more tourists to travel alone. In the case of women travelers, their increasing decisive power and independence also boosted solo travel. The tourism industry also offers several attractions specially designed for them. The post-pandemic era will show how this special group of travelers will react to the changed circumstances and how they will change their travel habits. The paper examines how frequently Hungarian respondents travel alone and what their attitudes towards this type of traveling are. Abstract:
Solo travel is no longer a niche market. It alone contributes a massive amount of the total travel market and has shown an enormous growth in recent years. But the existing body of literature on solo women travelling and its outcomes is quite negligible. Consequent upon the fact, this study significantly contributes in the increment of existing literature. A conceptual model is proposed based on the secondary data sources and presents a discussion on the impact of solo travel experiences on women’s well-being. For this purpose, a range of research papers, articles, blogs and other relevant social media contents have been reviewed to draw conclusive results for the study. In the findings, self-transformation and positive changes in well-being came out as resultant factors of solo travelling in many cases. Major reasons for solo travelling found during the study were—to overcome stress and depression, to bring positive change in present state of life, escape, happiness, empowerment, self-growth and self-realisation. This paper significantly adds to further researches on women solo travelling trends by providing insights into independent form of travel and draws attention towards its importance for women’s health.

Abstract:
Recent advances in gender equality have improved women’s employment and with their increased economic independence, women now have greater opportunities to travel and more choices to make about travel. A rising interest in solo female travel, which has been regarded as a means of demonstrating women’s empowerment, is observed in many parts of the world, including Asia. Nevertheless, this form of independent travel may expose women to risk when travelling alone in the gendered and sexualised tourism space. Although risk appears to be a prominent feature of women’s solo travel experience, little research in this area has considered risk as an independent subject of investigation. In fact, there are only a handful of studies on solo female travel despite its rising popularity and no one has studied the experiences of Asian women. In response to these gaps, this thesis explores the risk perceptions and negotiation strategies of Asian women who have travelled alone and the implications of risk in these women’s lives and in relation to the social world.

Abstract:
Women are increasingly active in the participation and consumption of travel, and are now recognised as a growing force within the tourism industry. This trend is linked to changing social and political circumstances for Western women around the world. Within Australia specifically, women's opportunities for education and for earning equitable incomes through employment have improved. Furthermore, traditional ideologies of the family have shifted, so that social expectations of marriage and the production of children do not yield as much power as they once did. As a result of these shifts, women living in contemporary Australia have a wider range of resources and opportunities with which to access an ever-increasing array of leisure/travel choices. It appears that one of the many ways in which women have been exercising their relatively recent financial and social autonomy is through independent travel. The solo woman traveller represents a growing market segment, with research showing that increasing numbers of females are choosing to travel alone, without the assistance or company of partners, husbands or packaged tour groups. However, little empirical research has explored the touristic experiences of solo women travellers, or examined the constraints and challenges they may face when journeying alone. 'Constraints' have been described variously as factors which hinder one's ability to participate in desired leisure activities, to spend more time in those activities, or to attain anticipated levels of satisfaction and benefit. While the investigation of constraints has contributed to the leisure studies discipline for a number of decades, the exploration of their influence on tourist behaviour and the tourist experience has been virtually overlooked. Research has shown that despite the choices and opportunities women have today, the freedom they have to consume those choices, and to access satisfying leisure and travel experiences, may be constrained by their social and gendered location as females. Although theorisations of constraint have remained largely in the field of leisure studies, it is argued and demonstrated in this thesis that there is potential in extending constraints theory to the inquiry of the tourist experience. Grounded in theoretical frameworks offered by gender studies, feminist geography, sociology and leisure, this qualitative study set out to explore the impact of constraints on women's solo travel experiences. Forty in-depth interviews were held with Australian women who had travelled solo at some stage of their adult lives. Adopting an interpretive and feminist-influenced research paradigm, it was important to allow the women to speak of their lives, constraints and experiences in their own voices and on their own terms. In line with qualitative methodologies, it is these women's words which form the data for this study. Based on a 'grounded' approach to data analysis, the results reveal that constraints do exist and exert influence on these women's lives and travel experiences in a myriad of ways. Four inter-linking categories of constraint were identified, namely socio-cultural, personal, practical and spatial. Further definition of these categories evolved, depending on where the women were situated in their stage of the solo travel experience (that is, pre-travel or during-travel). The results of this study show that there are identifiable and very real constraints facing solo women travellers. These constraints could stem from the contexts of their home environments, or from the socio-cultural structures of the destinations through which they travelled. However, these constraints were not immutable, insurmountable or even necessarily consciously recognised by many of the women interviewed. In fact, it became increasingly evident that women were findings ways and means to 'negotiate' their constraints, challenges and limitations. Three dominant negotiation responses to constraint could be identified; the women could choose to seek access to solo travel when faced with pre-travel constraints: they could withdraw from solo travel because of those same constraints, or they could decide to continue their journeys as a result of their in-situ constraints. Evidence of women negotiating suggests that constraints are not insurmountable barriers, and confirms that constraints do not necessarily foreclose access to travel. Furthermore, a focus on negotiation re-positions women as active agents in determining the course of their lives and the enjoyment of their solo travel experiences, rather than as passive acceptors of circumstance and constraint. Linking with the concept of negotiation, solo travel was also shown to be a site of resistance, freedom and empowerment for these forty women. Through solo travel, it was apparent that the women could transgress the structures and roles which influenced and governed their lives. This thesis shows that, through solo travel, the women interviewed found an autonomous and self-determining 'journey of their own'. At the same time, the extent to which this really was a journey of their own was questioned and revealed to be problematic under a feminist/gendered lens. Thus a more appropriate concept of women's solo travel is that it is a 'relative escape'. That is, their journeys, escapes and experiences were always situated relative to the societal expectations and perceptions of home; relative to the gendered perceptions and ideologies of the destination, and relative to the limited spatial freedoms as a result of a socially constructed geography of fear.

Abstract:
Every summer solo-hikers roam the wilderness in northern Scandinavia; across mountains and rivers; they are in awe of the nature. This thesis explores the question: What do they seek out there? It uncovers their aspirations and experiences with a phenomenological research approach. Sixteen solo-hikers were interviewed in-situ (northern Scandinavia, June to August 2014) to gain immediate insights into the phenomenon. The analysis derived four major experiential themes from their narratives: the solo, the nature, the physical and the inner experience. Accordingly, the solo-hikers seek an individual mixture of experiences often linked to their personal life-paths. The study suggests that the solo-hike is both a journey of distance and closeness. The individuals seek (a perceived, not spatial) distance to common life-spaces and make sense of wilderness as a place that is away. However, they speak about the solo-hike as an experience of closeness to their inner selves. The thesis links to key concepts in human geography (such as place, identity) and central discussions in tourism studies (e.g. solo-travel, travel motivations). Ultimately, it also offers a thorough theoretical discussion of adopting phenomenology in human geography.

This work aims to analyse the topic of sole female travellers, in connection with tourism journalism and women's magazines. The phenomenon of solo travel has been increasing in recent years. It has been studied throughout the world and in Portugal it seems to be starting to take the first steps. Tourism journalism and women's magazines have not been much studied because they are soft news, meaning that their content is not considered so relevant. However, both play an important role in society regarding dissemination and information. This project intends to gain a better understanding about the phenomenon and the profile of Portuguese solo travellers, as well as to identify in what way tourism journalism and women’s magazines can turn these trips more popular. Ultimately, it is suggested a model of a tourism section for the Portuguese female segment of the press. This section aims responding to the needs of solo travellers, but also influence women who would like to travel alone.

Abstract:
One of the most important topics in transportation demand is the relationship between individual needs to carry out geographically distributed activities, urban configuration, individual and household characteristics, transportation system and travel behavior. For that reason, the main aim of this work is to analyze the individual trip-chaining behavior in terms of three variables groups: (1) activity participation; (2) socioeconomic characteristics; and (3) land use. There are also two secondary objectives derived from the main objective: (a) to propose one set of land use variables; and (b) to verify the statistical significance of the created land use group variables. This work was based on the origin-destination survey carried out in the São Paulo metropolitan area in 1997, from which six final samples were extracted, analyzed and characterized by economic sector (for workers) and level of education (for students). Applying multivariate analysis techniques, confirmatory and exploratory, it was possible to represent the dependent variable (Cluster Analysis), as well as to find relationships between the concerned variables (Decision Tree) and, finally, to measure the statistical significance of the independent variables (Multiple Regression). From the results, it was possible to analyze the influence of the three variables groups on trip-chaining: (1) socioeconomic variables (household income, transit voucher use, probable number of driver licenses per household, age, car-ownership) affect the travel mode sequence used for the trips; (2) activity participation (study, work) has an effect on the trip purpose sequence; and (3) land use variables (accumulated proportion of jobs or schools by distance buffers starting from the residence zone centroid) influence the sequence of chosen destinations. It is expected that the present work could be a contribution to the scientific community for the representation of the activities level and their geographic distribution in the urban configuration (land use variables), and the influence of such variables on individuals displacements.

Abstract:
Certain types of travel, including solo travel, are seen as "heterotopia," understood as a space where women can resist, rather than submit to a patriarchal system. Traveling alone is a moment of empowerment for the woman, as before the trip she has to cope with the reaction of others and during the trip she has to overcome the difficulties, making the trip as a moment of personal search and reflection. These women also prefer to travel alone in order to not cope with one another's preferences. It is known that solo travel is generally confused with independent tourism, but the solo traveller has particular characteristics: he/she travels most of the time alone and is responsible for his/her choices, such as itineraries and activities, and can use, in some time of the trip, a service provider. Taking into account that the segment is mainly composed by women and that tourism is not a gender-neutral process, this work focus on the issue of women as travellers. It is also addressed the topic of Information and Communication Technologies and related concepts, such as m-tourism, in order to allow presenting the functionalities of a mobile application directed to this market segment. In the empirical research, we opted for a mixed methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. In a first phase we conducted a semistructured interview to 10 women of different ages and nationalities, on the topics addressed in the literature review. In the same way, and in order to generalize the data collected in the first part of the research, we used a online questionnaire survey, collecting 517 answers from female travellers. Through the empirical research, it was possible to draw the solo traveller personality, using the typologies created by Cohen (1972), Plog (2001), Smith (1989) and Burns (1999). Female solo travellers seek to immerse in the culture, are independent, seek novelty and prefer to visit places with few tourists, having as main motivation for a destination the cultural impact and also their relationship with local residents. Although the existing research has been very focused on fears and constraints, most responded not experiencing fear or difficulties. However, the difficulties are strongly associated with fears, in which the women who feel more fear feel more difficulties. It was also found that this association is higher among the youngster and single women.

Abstract:
Abstract The term 'women's leisure' is an oxymoron, as interpretations of leisure for ethnic, diasporic women are usually bound in family or visiting friends and relatives (VFR) holidays and activities. This chapter, using autoethnography for data collection and contextualized to pilgrimage tropes, is viewed through the lens of Jafari's Tourist Model. The six stages of the model are applied to my travels as a Zoroastrian woman: the terrors and joys of 'solo' but in a group, motivations for undertaking pilgrimage, and feelings while on pilgrimage through journeying to Iran. Diasporic identity with natal 'homelands', self-identity, and associations with important markers as a Zoroastrian woman are probed, along with the ideas inherent in pilgrimages of the 'mind', liberating one from the need to travel physically. Cementing shibboleths of economic independence, decision making, choice, and agency challenge perceptions of travel and generalizations about ethnic women's leisure. The lasting impact of 'pilgrimage' and the confidence it instilled to travel 'solo' and shape future leisure experiences around self-identity and religiosity act as a clarion call for assimilation, but not subsummation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
