Abstract:

Abstract:
Solidarity and mutuality constitute the basis for uniting various groups of people with a common interest in offsetting different risks. This paper briefly analyzes the meaning of the terms “solidarity” and “mutuality” as the basis of social security, then the emergence of social security and the current constitutional framework of the Republic of Serbia and the law of the European Union. In separate parts, the content and scope of mutuality and solidarity organized through mutual aid funds of craftsmen and merchants, according to the Guilds Decree 1847 and the mining and fraternal funds of miners from the Mining Code 1866 are investigated. The historical method is used to follow various types of care and assistance to briefly explain the reasons that led to their emergence, and later the social security institutions, while logical methods is deployed to draw conclusions about the characteristics of mutual insurance of craftsmen, traders and miners under these regulations. The paper deals with the analysis of the content and meaning of only those provisions and rules are relevant to the topic of this paper. Having in mind the dominant Ottoman system of state and economic organization at the beginning of the 19th century, which was equally marked by the struggle for liberation from the Turkish government, Serbia has made numerous advanced steps in the legislative sense. Apart from the fact that the Guilds Decree 1847 was of a reform character in relation to the feudal system and economic relations, it also relied on the tradition of solidarity and mutuality of fraternities when it regulated guild funds of mutual aid. The same applies to the mining-fraternal fund from the Mining Code 1866. How much the then state government in Serbia attached importance to these ways of insuring and securing craftsmen, traders and miners can be seen in the competence of the police to supervise the work of guilds. Besides, the Ministry of Finance and later the Ministry of National Economy were issuing consent to the fraternal fund of a number of mines and the text of the bylaws of the fraternal fund. T he guild and mining-fraternal funds were of an aleatory legal nature in relation to the risks of illness and death. Namely because the right to any compensation was ceasing with the termination of employment in the mine, without the right to a refund of paid deposits until then. Guild and mining social insurance was, by its nature, mandatory, of an adhesive nature based on entry into guild membership or an employment contract in the case of miners. This is an important difference in comparison to mutual insurance companies in which the status of a member is acquired by signing an insurance contract. Contributions through the payment of fees and additional, extraordinary contributions for unforeseen needs indicate that the guild and mining and fraternal funds were organized on the model of a mutual insurance company, without the intention of making a profit and exclusively for the benefit of its members.

Abstract:
Culture has an important effect on management and knowing the type of culture is valuable information for the management of any type of organization. The present investigation is carried out with the objective of knowing what type of organizational culture a faculty has in a Peruvian public university, applying the double S cube model, which supposes two variables; sociability and solidarity (double S). Applying the corresponding questionnaire, it is obtained that the faculty mainly has a fragmented culture in 03 of its academic departments and only in 01 department does it have a communal culture, the latter due to its significantly higher level of solidarity with respect to what the other 03 departments had. Among the consequences for management, it is pointed out that, the type of culture fragmented due to its characteristics will hinder some policies to improve the quality of teaching, research and social projection.

Abstract:
Very little literature is devoted to the effects of social risks in the social organization of the skyscrapers that are consistently associated with social disorganization. Some studies prove that crime, for example, as an aspect of social disorganization, strengthens the energy of a community, while others show that it leads to fragmentation. Drawing on the research of S. Saegert, Mr. Winkel and D. Cantillon, inventory of attitudes about the perception of living in skyscrapers buildings and their surroundings is composed . The study was conducted in two Sarajevo skyscrapers, and the aim was to identify important reactions of residents to social organizations in skyscrapers, participation in neighbourhood organizations, social capital, and security. Social organization at some levels is measured by the theory of social capital. Results in some respects suggest optimism and willingness of residents to participate in the social organization of skyscrapers, and some aspects are discouraging.

Abstract:
Rezultati pojmovne analize enciklike Fratelli tutti u kombinaciji s elementima deskriptivne statistike pokazuju povezanost svih razina solidarnosti (mikro, mezo i makro) kao i paradigmatsko proširenje pojma bližnjega kroz novu sintagmu „postati bližnji“. Ona kao originalan doprinos enciklike dalje razvija formulaciju enciklike Sollicitudo rei socialis o tome kako se „strukture grijeha“ mogu pobijediti jedino dijametralno oprečnim stavom: zalaganjem za dobro bližnjega. Također sintagma pruža smjernicu za etičko pozicioniranje u odnosu na individualizam, osobito u njegovu ekonomskom obliku.

Abstract:
In the article, on the basis of the analysis of works, attraction of memoirs, periodicals, a wide range of scientific literature, application of various methods of legal knowledge, an attempt is made to reconstruct the creative way of the outstanding jurist A.S. Yaschenko, to determine his place in the history of domestic legal science, to assess the state and prospects for further research of his personality and creativity. The main directions and results of his scientific activity, the core direction of which was the search for social and legal ideal, are revealed. It is noted that this ideal was found by him in the idea of social solidarity, arising from the law of mutual dependence of society and expressed in the requirement of its reasonable organization, including the construction of a system of law based on respect and implementation of this idea. It is emphasized that the principle of public solidarity was put A.S. Abstract:

Leadership encompasses all types of organizations including for profit, not-for-profit, government agencies, and the U. S. military. The U. S. Army requires its leaders to provide leadership at the direct, organizational and strategic level in a variety of situations from preparing to deploy to combat, actions in combat, redeployment and continuing the cycle for the next deployment. Senior U. S. Army leaders identified that leadership development is a priority for the future. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study, which included 15 voluntary participants, was to understand if the U. S. Army's organizational leadership development process based on the 2012 revisions in leadership doctrine be improved based on the opinions and experiences of prior military leaders, and the analysis of U. S. Army doctrine, regulations and prior leadership surveys. Thirteen themes emerged answering the 3 research questions that included 6 attributes, 4 competencies, and 3 improvements to training and education. The attributes included the combined experiences, lessons learned, and history to make decisions. Other attributes of importance were flexibility, critical thinking skills, ethical leadership, self-development, and becoming a mentor. Competencies were sense-making, understanding leadership doctrine and its implementation, ability to prioritize requirements at the organizational level, and enforcing counseling standards. Improvements were to identify problems and recommend change, talent management, and fostering organizational change. The U. S. Army leadership development is marginally sufficient for leadership development; however, necessary revisions and changes to processes be developed and implemented to strengthen the organizational leadership development outcomes for the U. S. Army.

Abstract:
Dealing with longer life expectancy and demographic deficit is currently a huge challenge for the social system of European member states. To face this challenge, it is necessary for legislators to develop a dedicated protection policy for the young people in a business relationship context and, at the same time, to redefine age limits policy especially in business relationship termination situation.. The presented study focuses on the factuality of the « age » concept. Based on cultural history, confirmed by the legislator analysis of the physiological aging, « age » criterion is closely linked to general principles in E.U. legislation like, for example, the human dignity and the equal treatment. However, the « age » criterion still remains ambivalent which is underlined by the non-discrimination principle. This ambiguity is emphasized in business relationships which leads to the influence of the « age » in an ending working life situation. This intergenerational pact support, which influence the proceed of the pension liquidation, is currently experiencing a revival beyond E.U. member state boundaries. A converging point is achieved in old-age treatment which leads to new solidarity development schemes inside companies (like for example the company occupational scheme). An important objective is to promote the pursuance of a professional activity in order to retire later (increasing in the statutory retirement age, increment or reduce of the retirement pension, restriction of derogations, proscription of business relationship breaches if they are based on age, …) and to redefine the connection between age and business relationships (combined work and retirement, phased retirement, …). By this way, legislators promote a human longevity based age treatment in Europe

Their efficiency had been confirmed by meta- analysis, yet cognitive-behavioural rehabilitation programmes in clinical praktice still lack some kind of systematic intervention particularly aimed at EF. The topic of the theoretical part is an introduction of selected theoretical models of EF and a summary of existing knowledge about EF rehabilitation. I have created a rehabilitation programme specificly focused on the ability of planning and organizing acitivities, which are complex abilities closely linked to the primary components of EF. This programme was created to help patiens with aquired brain damage to work on improvment of such abilities, whose disruption makes managing every day life requirements difficult. Along with that we tried to improve the quality of their lifes. This programme is also being introduced wihin the theoretical part of this work. Further the process of research is being analyzed. Abstract:
This final Master´s thesis aims to analyze factors that may contribute to the sustainability of a social economy organization, based on the theoretical approach of Mendes (2011) and taking as the object of its empirical work the Holy House of Mercy of São Bento de Arnoia - Celorico of Basto. In this empirical study, was adopted the methodology of historical analysis and case study, focusing on the most critical moments in which the economic sustainability of this organization was at risk. We concluded from this analysis that several factors which are proposed in the theoretical framework adopted for this study helped to overcome those critical moments, namely the following: identity and fidelity to the mission of providing services primarily to persons who otherwise could not have access to them, quality of human resources and of the services provided, combativeness, gratuity, instrumental rationality, democratic mode of government, affectivity, creativity and proactivity. These findings are an indication of the relevance that these factors may have on the sustainability of social economy organizations and the adequacy of the theoretical framework adopted here to study this issue, but further work is needed to sustain any firm conclusions on this matter.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Black Bostonians’ response to the deterioration of the national climate of race relations in the late 1890s. As the 1890s ended, black Bostonians questioned their previous trust in the two major parties and their faith in white allies. In their opposition, they enunciated a new political vision that advocated racial solidarity and rejected allegiance to the U. S. party system. By the beginning of the twentieth century, African Americans conceived a new political culture in which racial solidarity was paramount and partisan politics mistrusted.

Abstract:
The increase in business competitiveness forces companies to adopt new technologies to redesign business processes, improve products, and support organizational changes necessary for better performance. The literature on Competitive Intelligence (CI) touts its importance in providing corporate strategic vision to improve company competitiveness and success. To implement their strategic vision companies have to implement changes to their business processes, products, and/or to the organization itself. The voluminous body of literature on the management of change, including sub-areas such as Business Process Reengineering (BPR), Total Quality Management (TQM), and product improvement, implicitly or explicitly propose that company strategic intelligence is a pre-requisite for change, and that effective Information Systems (IS) support is a critical requirement for implementing change. There is some empirical evidence supporting these two hypotheses based on U.S. business organizations and there is little reason to believe that the relationships do not hold for Japanese companies. Whether or not U.S. and Japanese organizations are different in any way along these important variables is an interesting question. A field test of how effectively U.S. and Japanese business organizations are identifying strategic problems and opportunities, how effectively they implement business changes, and use IS technology to do so, was undertaken to empirically explore any differences. Despite the relatively small sample size, the results corroborate the importance of competitive intelligence and IS support for effectively implementing business change in U.S. and Japanese companies. The findings indicate, on the average, American companies are more effective in providing IS support for business change and Japanese companies are more effective in CI activities.

Abstract:
Abstract Marschak and Radner (1972) ([MR] for short) define an organization as, “a group of persons whose actions agree with certain rules that further their common interests”, and a team as an organization with “only common interests.” The common interest is expressed mathematically by a single expected utility function U for the team. The [MR] monograph presents various formulations of the team organization problems in economic theory setting along with the underlying decision analyses for different information structures, corresponding to the level of information exchange between the team members, and various payoff functions in a comprehensive manner. A recent monograph by Kim and Roush (1987) presents the core material developed by Marschak in the 1950’s and describes many aspects of teams, not previously studied, using modern techniques such as the theory of algorithms.

Abstract:
Leaders in the 21st Century face a complexity of issues greater than ever before. With ever increasing globalization and change, leaders must navigate the complexity of todays' issues and have the ability to strategically provide purpose and direction for the future. As organizations struggle to meet these challenges in the future, they must have processes in place that develop the leaders needed for their organization. This chapter will look at leader development as a lifelong learning process using the United States Army as the organization model. The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of the leader development process used by the U. S. Army, how they raise strategic leaders, and relate those practices to organizations external to a military organization. It is a call to action for organizations to look inward to ‘build their bench strength', and begin the process of leader development by creating a leader development strategy, understanding leader requirements specific for their organization and developing a leader development program that will prepare leaders for the challenges of the future.

Abstract:
Steamboat, Billy Batson’s friend and valet, was a stereotypical African American character who appeared in Fawcett’s comic books until 1945, when a group of New York City middle school students visited Captain Marvel editor Will Lieberson. Those students, all part of a program called Youthbuilders, Inc., successfully argued for the character’s removal. Drawing on the work of Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and George Yancy, this chapter studies the character and his similarities to other racial caricatures in U. S. popular culture of the era. It also provides a short history of the Youthbuilders, an organization created by social worker Sabra Holbrook. The chapter concludes with a discussion of Alan Moore’s Evelyn Cream, a black character who appears in the 1980s series Miracleman. Although not directly based on Steamboat, Moore’s character was an attempt to address racial stereotypes in superhero comic books, figures that have their origins in the narratives of the 1930s and 1940s.

"Both opponents and proponents of food irradiation have been sources of misinformation or valid information presented in a misleading way (20). As described by a leading British consumer representative: “ The battle to get irradiation of food accepted as a beneficial food processing technique has been waged for some 30 years. It is an interesting case of warring factions glaring at each other across a gulf of incomprehension” ( ). In this book an attempt will be made to provide factual data as a basis for a more rational approach to these controversies. The seminar jointly held by IOCU (International Organization of Consumer Unions) and ICGFI (International Con sultative Group on Food Irradiation) in 1993 (22) has raised hopes that this gulf of incomprehension can be narrowed, perhaps even closed. There is voluminous scientific literature on food irradiation, but it is not easy to come by because contributions have come from so many disciplines. Relevant reports have been published in journals of food technology, nutrition, microbiol ogy, analytical chemistry, food chemistry, radiation chemistry, radiation physics, toxicology, health physics, and other fields. There is only one scientific journal devoted exclusively to food irradiation research: Shokuhin-Shosha (Food Irradia tion, Japan), published by the Japanese Research Association for Food Irradiation since 1965; articles are in Japanese, with English abstracts. In order to facilitate access to this literature a computerized irradiation information database called IRREFCO (Irradiation Reference Collection) has been installed at the National Agricultural Library in the United States. It is initially aimed at making available the research contract reports generated in programs sponsored by the U. S. Army and U. S. Atomic Energy Commission in the 1950s and 1960s. Those reports are not accessible through ordinary library services. A selected annotated bibliogra phy is offered since 1993 (23). A bibliography on food irradiation has been prepared since 1955 by the Federal Research Center for Nutrition, Karlsruhe, Germany; it now contains over 10,000 documents. The whole database is pro cessed and stored on computer, and is also available in printed form. In recent years one issue of the printed bibliography has been published annually, each with 300-600 references (24). In the following chapters only a small fraction of these documents can be mentioned. The author endeavors to quote primarily those studies that will guide the reader to key issues, to review articles, and to other works showing a path to the remaining literature. Useful documentation of developments in food irradiation research can be found in three newsletters. Food Irradiation Quarterly International Newsletter (Saclay) was published in English and French by the European Information Center for Food Irradiation, Saclay, France, from 1960 to 1971. The International Project in the Field of Food Irradiation issued Food Irradiation Information (Karlsruhe) from 1972 until 1982. The Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, International Atomic Energy Agency, has Published Food Irradiation Newsletter (Vienna) since 1976." Abstract:
The sustainability command is embraced by businesses in the 21st century and is projected in their corporate social responsibility (CSR). The need of the employment of a multi-stakeholder model leads to a focus on common principles and priorities, i.e. creating shared values (CSV). The EU, with EU law, supports it, while various policies and organization reward it, such as the Czech organization Business pro Společnost, which, based on its synthetic index, selects the Czech TOP 25 most responsible companies. These companies have different countries of origins and operate in diverse industries, but they all are pro-sustainability. The question is whether they endorse the expected cultural, legal and social values (H1) and, if yes, whether there is a consistency and/or patterns (H2). Based on a sustainability, CSR and CSV review, a set of cultural, legal and social values are identified in order to be used in a case study. A pool of 36 large Czech companies from these TOP 25 in 2018-2022 is examined based on their BpS synthetic index, their country of origin´s Hofstede LTO and IDV and their advancement of internal reactive legal and social values (solidarity, respect) and external proactive legal and social values (equality, no waste) via their domains. These four legal and social values are ranked by an independent panel using a modified Likert scale and a manual Delphi approach. The yielded results are juxtaposed via a chart to allow pioneering propositions about the existence (H1) and inconsistency (H2) of values endorsed by top responsible large Czech companies.

Prednosti se očekuju u području očuvanja zdravlja i sigurnosti, smanjenja opasnih poslova u nezdravim uvjetima, povećanom dostupu informacijama, boljoj organizacija rada, poboljšanju u području poljoprivrede, obrazovanja,… Abstract: We are faced with the fact that new technologies are evolving extremely fast and affecting human lives in both business and private life. New inventions and innovations are presented almost every week. With the adequate application of artificial intelligence and robotics, the world can become a better place to live. However, history has shown that new technologies provide not only benefits and new opportunities, but also new costs and threats. The paper will present individual influences on changes in human action and behaviour in the near and distant future. Advantages are expected in the field of health and safety, reduction of dangerous jobs in unhealthy conditions, increased access to information, better organization of work, improvement in agriculture, education … On the other hand, a reduction in the number of jobs is expected, a greater need for highly specialized professionals, increasing technological complexity, …. Also, many futurists and scientists show concern about the development of superintelligence, which could replace the human race. Recently, there have been attempts to raise awareness of potential abuses of artificial intelligence and robotics, and there has been a need for laws, recommendations, guidelines to guide the development of robotics. The paper will list the more important advantages and disadvantages of robotics and artificial intelligence in certain areas of human activity, as well as the predictions of some eminent foreign and domestic scientists and futurists.

Abstract:
Abstract: Safety and protection of employees is an area that is regulated by the standard ISO 45001: 2018, i.e. at the level of the Republic of Croatia by the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Creating a safe working environment for employees in the organization is of particular importance given the possible threat to the quality of life, or life in general of employees who perform activities in the organization without providing them with adequate protective equipment. A safe working environment can also determine costs due to poor quality, i.e. it can result in costs related to sick leave, injuries at work, reduced efficiency of organizational employees, etc. is one of the areas regulated by the Legislator and sets minimum requirements for organizations that they must meet in order to be able to do business in the Republic of Croatia. On the other hand, the norm of the employee health and safety management system defines the additional requirements it places on the organizational management system, which can be the basis for ensuring added value for employees. Given the diversity of requirements set by the Legislator, ie the requirements set by the norm of the employee health and safety management system, the aim of this paper is to analyse the requirements and identify areas that are similar or different as well as point out possible shortcomings.

Abstract:
Pažnja u znanstvenoj literaturi se pritom počela posebno pridavati konceptu organizacijske otpornosti – mogućnosti prilagodbe eksternim šokovima i nastavku rada prijašnjim kapacitetom. Abstract: The COVID 19 disease pandemic, which began in early 2020, represents an unprecedented external market shock that has led to changes in the way companies operate in various industries. Some of the specifics of the business circumstances related to the pandemic are the closure of state borders, the introduction of measures of social distance and new technical conditions that companies had to adhere to in order to reduce the risk of spreading the disease. Companies from certain industries are even completely banned from working. Attention in the scientific literature has begun to pay special attention to the concept of organizational resilience - the ability to adapt to external shocks and continue to work with the previous capacity. This review paper analyzes the relationship between the concept of organizational resilience and key principles of business organization quality management. The aim of this paper is to build a theoretical model that can be used to research the key determinants of the potential relationship between organizational resilience and quality management in business organizations.

Abstract:
Abstract: One of the consequences of the corona virus pandemic is a major shock to the economies worldwide. The impact on various sectors and companies depends on several factors, including the possibility of adapting jobs, i.e., the way of performing work tasks in the context of epidemiological measures. Organizations face the need for a new strategic approach in work organization, in workplace health protection, with communication under new circumstances, as well as in leadership, motivation, and revenue and cost management. In New York, for example, only 14% of more than a million employees returned to their offices by mid-January, threatening many small businesses (shops, restaurants) but also the living in Manhattan. During the spring lockdown, 62% of employed Americans worked from home which is more than twice as many as a few years earlier. Many of them expressed satisfaction with the quick adjustment and efficiency, but recent research shows that working from home also has negative effects, such as those related to direct communication, knowledge sharing, creative problem solving, but also the separation of private and business life. This paper analyses the elements of workplace quality, ways of adapting and organizing the work of different activities in pandemic conditions, and advantages and disadvantages of teleworking in search of an answer to the question of whether the future is in hybrid workplaces.

Abstract:
Less than 15 years ago the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute surveyed physicians in the United States in order to characterize the demographics of hemophilia. The average age of persons with hemophilia in the United States was found to be 11.5 years old. By 10 years later, the life expectancy was predicted to be normal, and indeed the average age of persons with hemophilia in the U.S. is now in the early twenties. Early, intensive and predictably efficacious control of hemorrhage has made this result possible, and the therapeutic product which has allowed such control is commercial clotting factor concentrate. We now know that starting in 1978, and with great frquency during 1982 and 1983, the majority of U.S. hemophiliacs were infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is estimated that as of January, 1987, approximately two thirds of the 20,000' persons with hemophilia in the United States have been infected with HIV. Among those with severe factor VIII deficiency, more than 9056 are seropositive. As of 1/5/87, there were 288 cases of AIDS among U.S. hemophiliacs, for an AIDS rate of approximately 2.256 of those with HIV infection. This number included 185 with severe, 32 with moderate and 28 with mild hemophilia A; 12 with severe, 6 with moderate and 1 with mild hemophilia B; 9 with vWD, and 4 others. A disproportionate number were older patients: 55 were ages 1-19; 62 ages 20-29; 85 ages 30-39, and 86 age 40 or older. Although the AIDS attack rate is no longer climbing logarhythmically, new cases are certainly still occurring.A variety of other HIV-related syndromes have emerged. Of great concern is immune thrombocytopenia, which is now relatively common; among a group of 209 carefully followed HIV-positive patients at our center, 31 (1556) are or have been thrombocytopenic. Progressive failure to normally gain height and weight in children with hemophilia has recently been shown by our group to correlate with HIV antibody positivity, and also with decreased T4/T8 ratio, decreased T4 cell count, decreased skin test reactivity, and subsequent development of ARC or AIDS in some such children. Finally, a picture of progressive fall in T4 count associated with recurrent non-specific infections and increased likelihood of positive viral culture, may predict an increased risk of developing AIDS.We know that the immune dysfunction in hemophilia is complex, and not wholly explained by HIV infection. One important factor may be the many foreign proteins contained in commercial clotting factor concentrates, and their ability to stimulate T cells. It is known that latent HIV infection in cultured T4 lymphocytes can be induced to enter the proliferative, viral secretory phase by the addition of soluble foreign antigens to the cell culture. Recent data of Brettler and colleagues, to be presented at this meeting, suggest that the use of highly purified VI!I:C (specific activity >3000 u/mg) in place of the present extremely impure products, may improve the immune dysfunction in hemophilia. This observation offers a new hypothetical approach to the prevention of progressive T4 cell depletion in HIV infected hemophiliacs, and requires immediate and extensive further study. The psychosocial burden of HIV infection is immense. The need for extensive, formal education and support programs is largely unmet in most parts of the world. Such programs are best run out of hemophilia treatment centers in most cases, and must include an active program on prevention of sexual transmission, provision of HIV testing before and during pregnancies, provision for maintenance of confidentiality, etc. Education concerning HIV is like all other forms of education. It requires formal organization, a curriculum, active rather than passive learning in which there is interaction between the teacher and the pupil, time for planned repetition, reinforcement with written materials, and assessment of goals achieved. For all of these reasons it is inappropriate to assume that the physician at the hemophilia center will be able to provide an adequate education program. Adquate paramedical personnel will need to undertake this effort, under the directjon of the physician.

Abstract:
In spatial, social and cultural pluralism, the questions of human intentionality and socio-spatial emergence remain central to social theory (Portugali 2000, p.142). The correlation between individual preferences, values and intentions, and actual behaviour and actions, is subject to Portugali’s theory of self-organisation (2000). Compared to Gidden’s structuralism, which focuses on society and groups, the point of departure for Portugali (2000) are individuals and their personal choices. The key feature in how complex systems `self-organise', is that they `interpret', the information that comes from the environment (Portugali 2006). The current study explores the urban environment formerly inhabited, and largely constructed, by Jews in two central Polish districts: Mazovia and Lodz, before the tragedy of the Holocaust. While the Jewish presence lasted from the 11th century until the outbreak of World War II, the most intensive development took place in the 19th century, together with the civilisation changes introduced by industrialisation. Embracing the everyday habits of Jewish citizens endows the neighbourhood structures they once inhabited with long gone meanings, the information layer which once helped organise everyday life. The main thesis reveals that Jewish communities in pre-war Poland represented an example of a self-organising society, one which could be considered a prototype of contemporary postmodern cultural complexity. The mapping of this complexity at the scale of a neighbourhood is a challenge, a method for which is addressed in the current paper. The above considerations are in line with the empirical studies of the relations between Jews and Poles, especially in large cities, where more complex socio-cultural processes could have occurred. Abstract:
As part of the U. S. Department of Transportation safety regulations, seamless steel cylinders that are used to transport high-pressure gases are required to be periodically retested during their lifetime [1]. The safety regulations have recently been revised to permit the use of ultrasonic methods for retesting steel cylinders. These ultrasonic test methods permit the quantitative determination of the size of any flaws that are detected in the cylinders. Therefore, to use these ultrasonic test methods it is required that quantitative, “allowable flaw sizes” be established to set acceptance/rejection limits for the cylinders at the time of retesting. Typical flaws that can occur in seamless steel cylinders during service are line corrosion, gouges, local thin areas of corrosion, notches, and cracks. To establish “allowable flaw sizes” for seamless steel cylinders, an assessment of typical flaws that occur in seamless cylinders was first carried out to establish the “critical flaw sizes” (e.g. depth and length or area) for selected types of flaws. The critical flaw size is the size of the flaw that will cause the cylinders to fail at either the designated test pressure or at the marked service pressure. The API Recommended Practice 579 “Fitness-for-Service” was used to calculate the critical flaw sizes for a range of cylinder sizes and strength levels [2]. Several hundred monotonic hydrostatic, flawed-cylinder burst tests were conducted as part of an International Standards Organization (ISO) test program to evaluate the fracture performance of a wide range of steel cylinders [3]. The results of these tests were used to verify the calculated “critical flaw sizes” that were calculated using the API 579 procedures. These results showed that the analysis conducted according to API 579 always underestimated the actual flaw sizes to cause failure at test pressure or at service pressure. Therefore, the “Fitness for Service” assessment procedures can be used reliably to establish the “critical flaw sizes” for cylinders of all sizes and strength levels. After the “critical flaw sizes” to cause failure of the cylinders at both the test pressure and the service were established, the “allowable flaw sizes” were calculated for a wide range of the cylinder types and strength levels. This was done modifying (reducing) the size of the “critical flaw sizes” for each cylinder by adjusting for fatigue crack growth that may occur during the use of the cylinder. This results in the final “allowable flaw size” criteria that are used for defining the acceptance or rejection of the cylinders during retesting. This paper presents the results of the analytical and experimental work that was performed to establish the “critical flaw sizes” and “allowable flaw sizes” for a wide range of high-pressure gas cylinders.
