In this study, MgAl2O4 nanoparticles with different calcination times were synthesized for photocatalytic applications. Different analyses techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDX, UV-visible, and FTIR were performed to investigate the structural, chemical, optical, and mor-phological properties of the synthesized nanoparticles. XRD analysis revealed the formation MgAl2O4 spinel structure. UV-Visible measurements indicate that MgAl2O4-2 nanoparticles had a narrower energy gap compared to MgAl2O4-1 and MgAl2O4-3. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) has proved to be a useful tool in the analysis of structural and dynamic properties of proteins. However, the inherent low sensitivity of NMR hinders further advancements of the field. This thesis focuses on improving the sensitivity of ssNMR, be this through an improvement in signal to noise or an effective improvement in sensitivity by enhancing the information content. The mixed rotational and rotary resonance (MIRROR) sequence1 was employed to facilitate protein backbone assignment under moderate spinning speeds. Through the band selective nat

In condensed matter physics, atomistic first principle calculations are often necessary to achieve a microscopic understanding of the observed experimental phenomena and to make quantitative predictions of physical properties. In practice, atomic scale systems have irregularities (e.g. surface roughness) or defects (e.g. substitutional atoms or vacancies) that are too strong to be ignored or treated as small perturbations. In this thesis, we report the development of a real space DFT code for studying atomic scale systems from first principles. Our code, named MatRcal, which stands for "Matlab

The increasing demand for energy efficient vulcanization of rubber extrusions requires the optimization and further development of existing processes. Microwave vulcanization allows the energy required for this process to be coupled directly into the material via dielectric losses. Microwave heating requires the polarity of the rubber so that the electromagnetic wave can cause the polar components of the material to vibrate. These vibrations cause internal friction, resulting in an increase in the temperature of the rubber compound. In this research project, microwaves were used to heat a rubb
