Abstract: The attainment of program outcomes for Solid Mechanic course offered to the Diploma in Civil Engineering students is evaluated. It was found that most of the students were incapable to demonstrate graduate attributes which applying knowledge of mathematics, natural science and engineering fundamentals and the ability to analyse engineering problems. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of physics and maths scores on the students’ performance of solid mechanics. Analysis of the previous results in physics and maths shows that there is a clear link between students’ fundamentals knowledge and the understanding of solid mechanics. Meanwhile, this study also aims to find out the root causes that led to the high failure rate of solid mechanics. A quantitative method was employed and a total of 180 students responded to the survey. Results of survey indicate that most of the students perceived that they had limited time to gain deep understanding of the course and they could not visualise the complex problems in solid mechanics. Majority of the students admitted that they did not manage to solve all questions during their final exam, and they were indeed not well prepared for it. Hence, the problem of high failure rate is feasible to be solved provided both lecturers and students making efforts in striving the success of this course. Abstract:
In this paper, the performance of a hybrid ‘FE-Meshfree’ quadrilateral element with continuous nodal stress (Quad4-CNS) is investigated for geometrical nonlinear solid mechanic problems. By combining finite element method (FEM) and meshfree method, this Quad4-CNS synergizes the individual strengths of these two methods, which leads to higher accuracy, better convergence rate, as well as high tolerance to mesh distortion. Therefore, Quad4-CNS is attractive for geometrical nonlinear solid mechanic problems where excessive distorted meshes occur. For geometrical nonlinear analysis, numerical results show that the results of Quad4-CNS element are much better than those of four-node isoparametric quadrilateral element (Quad4), and are comparable to quadratic quadrilateral element (Quad8) and other hybrid ‘FE- Meshfree’ elements.

Size effect for intrinsic stresses and thermodynamics of films formation established taking into account the nature of stresses in copper condensates deposited on solid state substrates. We believe that surface energy changes during layer by layer deposition in such condensates with chaotically dispersed areas (possessing different values of Young’s modulus) define the film’s mechanic parameters. The quantitative estimations of mechanical stresses are calculated for layer by layer film growth. The resulting intrinsic stresses (ISs) in copper condensates nature from local static ones, superposed within the area of a film. The latter arose due to anisotropy of interface interaction energy parameters.

Abstract:
Industrial wastes may produce leachates that can contaminate the aquatic ecosystem. Toxicity testing in acute and chronic levels is essential to assess environmental risks from the soluble fractions of these wastes, since only chemical analysis may not be adequate to classify the hazard of an industrial waste. In this study, ten samples of solid wastes from textile, metal-mechanic, and pulp and paper industries were analyzed by acute and chronic toxicity tests withDaphnia magnaandVibrio fischeri. A metal-mechanic waste (sample MM3) induced the highest toxicity level toDaphnia magna(CE50,48 h=2.21%). A textile waste induced the highest toxicity level toVibrio fischeri(sample TX2,CE50,30 min=12.08%). All samples of pulp and paper wastes, and a textile waste (sample TX2) induced chronic effects on reproduction, length, and longevity ofDaphnia magna. These results could serve as an alert about the environmental risks of an inadequate waste classification method.

The need of techniques for determining the mechanical properties of thin films, e.g. hardness coatings on ion beam treated surfaces has prompted a study of the microindentation hardness technique. The present interest is driven to a good understanding of the adhesion, friction, wear, and indentation processes. In most of the solid-solid interfaces of technological relevance, it occurs contact in many asperities, and this is why the study of fundamental properties of micro-mechanic and tribology of surfaces and interfaces is very important. The recent developments of different microscopic techniques based on tips and force surface devices (i.e. AFM, FM, LFM) allowed investigations of interfacial problems with high resolution and have led to the nanoscale regime the mechanical properties study for a wide spectrum of materials. In this work a method for Young's modulus determination of hard coatings multilayers of TiN/ZrN is evaluated. This method is based on AFM and spectroscopy-force modes [1-2].

Abstract:
The article compares the mechanical and technical characteristics of car lifts used at all car service centers. Over the last 20 years, two-post lifts have taken their place and gained popularity, they have overtaken four-post lifts by more than three times, if only because they cost less. Two-post jacks were originally used to check and service oil, tires, etc., but are now widely used for major activities (although four-post jacks are still required for a full MOT). Nevertheless, many experts do not stop reporting the risk of falling vehicles from two-post lifts. There have been known cases over the past five years, when not only the car was damaged during the fall from the lift, but also the workers were seriously injured, and there were also fatal cases. Therefore, the opinion of the inspection department is that any fall of the vehicle from a height carries a high risk and fatal injuries. Manufacturers of medium and premium lifting equipment began to introduce budget models into their lines. They follow the path of structural simplification of models, reduce production costs, use cheaper metals, remove electronic systems, which allows to reduce the cost of equipment. The lift market shows almost no changes in terms of assortment. It is segmented according to the type of lifters – two-post, plunger, scissor, roll-up ditch, four-post, multi-post plunger. When considering the market of lifting equipment, one cannot ignore the Chinese car manufacturers, which occupy a solid share in the overall structure of this product group. “The Chinese equipment market is now clearly divided into two classes – one is represented by cheap and low-quality products, and the other is a segment of equipment of decent quality. There is a clear difference between the two segments that is clear to a professional. When choosing Chinese lifts, customers understand that if they ask for little money for the equipment, it will not last long. There is a lot of such low-quality equipment on the market, and this product generally discredits the entire segment from China.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the performance of the three-node triangular element with continuous nodal stress (Trig3-CNS) for geometry nonlinear solid mechanic problems. This Trig3-CNS element was recently proposed to improve accuracy of the finite element method (FEM). By synergizing the individual strengths of meshfree method and FEM, the Trig3-CNS element achieves higher accuracy and convergence rate. Furthermore, Trig3-CNS presents high tolerance to mesh distortion. Therefore, it is potentially useful for geometry nonlinear solid mechanics problems in which mesh distortion takes place. Compared with the traditional hybrid “FE-Meshfree” elements, Trig3-CNS naturally processes CNS without requiring any extra operation in post-processing. Numerical tests in the present work show that for geometry nonlinear analysis, the results of the Trig3-CNS element are better than the 3-node triangular element (Trig3) and 4-node isoparametric quadrilateral element (Quad4). In addition, the performance of Trig3-CNS is comparable to that of traditional hybrid “FE-Meshfree” elements.

The use of Eucalyptus as solid wood can be a solution to increase the economic viability of our forests due to its rapid growth, good adaptability, low cost of production and physical and mechanical properties favorable to a variety of uses. The aim of this work is to make a biometric study of fibers and characterize the mechanical properties along with the spiral grain detection on Eucalyptus botryoides wood, a specie with only a few studies but with great potential to replace imported timber of high commercial value for solid purposes. Trees of 4 and 6 years old were studied and characterized its fibers, density, modulus of elasticity for static bending, axial compression, Janka hardness and spiral grain. The fibers length and wall thickness had expected values and variations. The 4 year’s timber revealed a more efficient mechanical behavior than the 6 year’s because despite the lower density, the mechanical properties were surprising for its lightness, and also showed no spiral grain. The results obtained in this work points towards evidence of a favorable behavior of Eucalyptus botryoides regarding its use on solid wood products.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze the possible variations on the of Industrial Solid Waste (ISW) disposal scenario from metal-mechanic companies after the publication of the National Solid Waste Policy (NSWP). 22 companies from metal-mechanic sector and 6 landfills/final disposal plants were interviewed, all those in the state of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Criteria were established for companies selection in which have been subdivided into three samples: Sample A (metal-mechanic companies that stopped sending ISW before 2010), Sample B (metal-mechanic companies stopped sending ISW in the period between 2010 and 2014, or that are still sending waste for disposal until the date of the survey) and Sample C (landfills and final disposal plants). The used methodology was the application of a survey instrument through professional interviews or by telephone in the environmental departments of each company. Data were collected between the months of 2014, October to 2015, April and limited to the period of 2010 to 2014. The presented results are in two chapters. The first relates to a comprehensive analysis segmented by each company of the sample, and the second is dedicated to the Sample B companies. The main results in Sample B companies indicate ISW shipping reductions for disposal, mainly of the hazardous waste, and there is a increasing shipment of non-hazardous waste. In the Sample C was verified a significant decreasing in the receipt of hazardous waste and, in the other hand, a increasing of non-hazardous waste by the year 2013. The main facts which justify this disposal scenario in the state, refers to the legal publications, like FEPAM/RS no 16 Administrative Rule that prohibits the flammability waste disposal as well the concern about environmental liabilities non generation.

Qian, Jing. "Discrete gradient method in solid mechanics." Diss., University of Iowa, 2009. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/261.

Full text
Abstract:
The discrete gradient method is proposed as a novel numerical tool to perform solid mechanics analysis directly on point-cloud models without converting the models into a finite element mesh. This method does not introduce continuous approximation of the primary unknown field variables; instead, it computes the gradients of the field variables at a node using discrete differentials involving a set of neighboring nodes. The discrete gradients are substituted into Galerkin weak from to derive the algebraic governing equations for further analysis. Therefore, the formulation renders a completely discrete computation that can conduct mechanical analysis on point-cloud representations of patient-specific organs without resorting to finite element method. Since the method is prone to rank-deficient instability, a stabilized scheme is developed by employing penalty that involves a minor modification to the method. The difference between nodal strain and subcell strain is penalized to prevent the appearance of zero average strain. This dissertation delineates the theoretical underpins of the method and provides a detailed description of its implementation in two and three-dimensional elasticity problem. Several benchmark numerical tests are presented to demonstrate the accuracy, convergence, and capability of dealing with compressibility and incompressibility constraint without severe locking. An efficient method is also developed to automatically extract point-cloud models from medical images. Two and three-dimensional examples of biomedical applications are presented too.

Samami, Hassan. "Solid mechanics of degrading bioresorbable polymers." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/37787.

Full text
Abstract:
Bioresorbable polymers have been successfully used in clinical applications for many decades. They are those types of polymers that degrade into the human body and often don’t need to be removed out of the body, because their degradation products metabolise and enter the general metabolic pathways. However, there has been an increasing demand for better reliability and degradation control of bioresorbable polymeric devices causing researchers to abandon trial-and-error approaches to model-based methods. The mathematical or computer-based techniques for modelling of the mechanical properties are currently in their infancy or non-existent. This study aims to build a model to express the change in mechanical properties and detecting the degradation distribution within degrading bioresorbable polymers. It consists of three main parts. The first part reviews the literature for the most commonly used bioresorbable polymers and their applications. It also reviews the existing mathematical models for biodegradation. The experimental data of six PLLA films are also reviewed to provide insight into changes in mechanical properties of degrading bioresorbable polymers during hydrolytic degradation. The review shows that the mechanical properties are highly affected by the changes in molecular weight and crystallization. The second part presents a constitutive law for prediction of the elastic moduli, tensile strength and Poisson’s ratio of amorphous and semi-crystalline bioresorbable polymers based on the novel idea of formation cavity and crystal inclusions within degrading bioresorbable polymers. The results of using the constitutive law show that it can fit the experimental data fairly well. The third part presents a vibration-based study that shows the curvature mode shapes can successfully reveal the degradation distribution within, for instance, a simple cantilever beam or a coronary stent. This study also presents a chapter for computer modelling of the degradation behaviour of polyester-based tissue scaffolds using a degradation model developed in the University of Leicester.

Abstract:
A vast majority of objects around us arise from some growth processes. Many natural phenomena such as growth of biological tissues, glaciers, blocks of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and space objects may serve as examples. Similar processes determine specific features of many industrial processes which include crystal growth, laser deposition, melt solidification, electrolytic formation, pyrolytic deposition, polymerization and concreting technologies. Recent researches indicates that growing solids exhibit properties dramatically different from those of conventional solids, and the classical solid mechanics cannot be used to model their behavior. The old approaches should be replaced by new ideas and methods of modern mechanics, mathematics, physics, and engineering sciences. Thus, there is a new track in solid mechanic that deals with the construction of adequate models for solid growth processes. The fundamentals of the mathematical theory of growing solids are under consideration. We focus on the surface growth when deposition of a new material occurs at the boundary of a growing solid. Two approaches are discussed. The first one deals with the direct formulation of the mathematical theory of continuous growth in the case of small deformations. The second one is designed for the solution of nonlinear problems in the case of finite deformations. It is based on the ideas of the theory of inhomogeneous solids and regards continuous growth as the limit case of discrete growth. The constitutive equations and boundary conditions for growing solids are presented. Non-classical boundary value problems are formulated. Methods for solving these problems are proposed.

Abstract:
Sliding friction on ice and snow is characteristically low at temperatures common on Earth’s surface. This slipperiness underlies efficient sleds, winter sports, and the need for specialized tires. Friction can also play micro-mechanical role affecting ice compressive and crushing strengths. Researchers have proposed several mechanisms thought to govern ice and snow friction, but directly validating the underlying mechanics has been difficult. This may be changing, as instruments capable of micro-scale measurements and imaging are now being brought to bear on friction studies. Nevertheless, given the broad regimes of practical interest (interaction length, temperature, speed, pressure, slider properties, etc.), it may be unrealistic to expect that a single mechanism accounts for why ice and snow are slippery. Because bulk ice, and the ice grains that constitute snow, are solids near their melting point at terrestrial temperatures, most research has focused on whether a lubricating water film forms at the interface with a slider. However, ice is extremely brittle, and dry-contact abrasion and wear at the front of sliders could prevent or delay a transition to lubricated contact. Also, water is a poor lubricant, and lubricating films thick enough to separate surface asperities may not form for many systems of interest. This article aims to assess our knowledge of the mechanics underlying ice and snow friction.
