Sugihara, Kokichi. Antigravity Slopes. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0033.

Full text
Abstract:
A new type of illusion, called the antigravity slope illusion, is presented in this chapter. In this illusion a slope orientation is perceived opposite to the true orientation and hence a ball put on it appears to be rolling uphill, defying the law of gravity. This illusion is based on the ambiguity in the distance from a viewpoint to the surface of a three-dimensional solid represented in a single-view image. This illusion also arises in human real life, for example, when a car driver misunderstands the orientation of a road along which he or she is driving. Two assumptions are explored: (a) the human brain prefers to interpret vertical columns in a two-dimensional image as being vertical in three-dimensional space to being slanted and (b) the human brain prefers the most symmetric shape as the interpretation of a two-dimensional image.

Abstract:
This book examines the use of Korean television dramas and K-pop music to promote urban and rural places in South Korea. Building on the phenomenon of Korean pop culture, the book argues that pop culture-featured place selling mediates two separate domains: political decentralization and the globalization of Korean popular culture. By analyzing the process of culture-featured place marketing, the book shows that urban spaces are produced and sold just like TV dramas and pop idols by promoting spectacular images rather than substantial physical and cultural qualities. The book demonstrates how the speculative, image-based, and consumer-exploitive nature of popular culture shapes the commodification of urban space and ultimately argues that pop-culture-mediated place promotion entails the domination of urban space by capital in more sophisticated and fetishized ways.

Atkins, Peter. Reactions. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199695126.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Illustrated with remarkable new full-color images--indeed, one or more on every page--and written by one of the world's leading authorities on the subject, Reactions offers a compact, pain-free tour of the inner workings of chemistry. Reactions begins with the chemical formula almost everyone knows--the formula for water, H2O--a molecule with an "almost laughably simple chemical composition." But Atkins shows that water is also rather miraculous--it is the only substance whose solid form is less dense than its liquid (hence ice floats in water)--and incredibly central to many chemical reactions, as it is an excellent solvent, being able to dissolve gases and many solids. Moreover, Atkins tells us that water is actually chemically aggressive, and can react with and destroy the compounds dissolved in it, and he shows us what happens at the molecular level when water turns to ice--and when it melts. Moving beyond water, Atkins slowly builds up a toolkit of basic chemical processes, including precipitation (perhaps the simplest of all chemical reactions), combustion, reduction, corrosion, electrolysis, and catalysis. He then shows how these fundamental tools can be brought together in more complex processes such as photosynthesis, radical polymerization, vision, enzyme control, and synthesis. Peter Atkins is the world-renowned author of numerous best-selling chemistry textbooks for students. In this crystal-clear, attractively illustrated, and insightful volume, he provides a fantastic introductory tour--in just a few hundred colorful and lively pages - for anyone with a passing or serious interest in chemistry.

Black Becker, Carolyn, Nicholas R. Farrell, and Glenn Waller. Exposure Therapy for Eating Disorders. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780190069742.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Exposure therapy is a core component of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders (EDs), including cognitive-behavioral therapy and family-based treatment. Despite this, existing treatment guides give relatively limited attention to the clinical issues associated with good implementation of exposure. This book is designed to augment a wide variety of treatment manuals by providing ED clinicians with practical advice for maximizing the effectiveness of exposure, regardless of which evidence-based treatment they use or the profession to which they belong. Written in an easy-to-understand format, this book not only translates the most up-to-date empirical research on exposure for EDs, it also extrapolates clinical advice from the anxiety disorders literature to help busy clinicians become more effective in treating EDs. Readers will walk away with a solid foundation in the theoretical underpinnings of exposure therapy, as well as an understanding of how to utilize this information to sell the rationale for exposure to their ED patients. Clinically rich chapters, with ample case material, demonstrate how to prepare to embark on exposure therapy with a wide range of ED patients, including those with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Specific types of ED exposure are covered in detail, including exposure to food and eating, cue exposure for binge eating, weighing and weight exposure, body image exposure, emotion and interpersonally focused exposure, and novel forms of exposure for EDs. Clinicians also will walk away with strategies for overcoming obstacles to implementation of exposure therapy, including institutional resistance.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Joe Montana's lawsuit against the San Jose Mercury News. Montana was one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the National Football League. In San Francisco, he led four teams to victory in the Super Bowl and was named the Most Valuable Player of three of those games. After each Super Bowl victory, the local newspaper, not surprisingly, ran stories about Montana and the team and included photographs. These stories and photographs were clearly protected as documenting newsworthy events under the First Amendment. After the fourth Super Bowl victory, however, the San Jose Mercury News released and sold a poster that included photos of Montana from all four Super Bowls. Montana felt that the use of his photograph in the poster was a violation of his right of publicity—that the newspaper had used his image without his permission and profited from it. Montana's lawsuit highlighted the question of what was newsworthy and thus protected by freedom of speech, and how long that newsworthy privilege lasted. His case also reflected the shift in laws of reputation from protecting dignity to protecting the celebrity's financial interest in his image.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a clinical description of ultrasound physics tailored to provide the practitioner a solid background for optimal imaging and needle guidance technique during regional anesthesia. Important ultrasound characteristics are covered, including optimization of ultrasound images, transducer selection, and features found on most point-of-care systems. In-plane and out-of-plane needle guidance techniques and a three-step process for visualizing in-plane needle insertions are presented. Next, common artifacts and errors including attenuation, dropout, and intraneural injection are covered, along with clinical solutions to overcome these inaccuracies. Preparation details are reviewed to make the regional anesthesia procedures as reproducible and safe as possible. Also included are a practical review of peripheral nerve block catheter placement principles, an appendix listing what blocks may be used for what surgeries, and seven Keys to Ultrasound Success that can make ultrasound guided regional anesthesia understandable and clinically feasible for all practitioners.

McCusker, Kristine M. Gendered Stages. Edited by Travis D. Stimeling. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190248178.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the ways country music performers and producers created contingent, gendered stages that evolved from the industry’s start in the 1920s. It also examines the ways country artists and others have welded ideas of an authentic and genuine music to those performances to make those contingent stages seem solid, stable, and unchanging, even as they reflect a southern culture in transition. The chapter describes those gendered strategies from the early barn dance radio years to the mid-1950s country and western music to the current industry, including the recent “tomato” controversy. It assumes a tight connection between the images presented on stage and the off-stage relationships between performers, producers, and other industry insiders, an interconnection that has had ramifications for country music scholarship as well. We need to examine and move beyond the links between the genre’s authenticity narratives and its various gendered stages.

Abstract:
Parisians’ interest in photography’s potential as a historical medium gained increasing purchase after World War II, as exemplified by the celebrations of the Bimillénaire de Paris, a public festival to commemorate Paris’s two thousandth birthday, the two millennia since the arrival of Julius Caesar. Exhibitions, press coverage, and books sold photography to the world as the future of studying the past. Faced with the specter of Paris—and France’s—global decline, writers, magazine editors, and municipal officials nonetheless leaned heavily on old prints, paintings, and their historical styles in order to call forth better times from the city’s venerated past. They contributed to Paris’s visual vocabulary, a set of standard image subjects and styles that knit the past into the present both on the printed page and in the historical imagination.

Yacovazzi, Cassandra L. Escaped Nuns. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190881009.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Just five weeks after its publication in January 1836, Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery sold over 20,000 copies. By “escaped nun,” Maria Monk, the book provided a shocking exposé of convent life, from licentious priests to tortured nuns to infanticide. Despite Maria Monk’s unveiling as an imposter, her book went on to become the second bestseller before the Civil War, after Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Far from representing a curious aberration, Monk’s book was part of a larger phenomenon, involving riots, propaganda, and politics. The campaign against convents was intimately connected with cultural concerns regarding reform, religion, immigration, and in particular the role of women in the republic. At a time when concern for “female virtue” consumed many Americans, nuns were a barometer of attitudes toward women. The veiled nun stood as the inversion of the true woman, needed to sustain the purity of the nation. She was a captive for a foreign foe, a fallen woman, a “white slave,” and a “foolish virgin.” In the first half of the nineteenth century, ministers, vigilantes, politicians, and writers, both male and female, crafted this image of the nun, locking arms against convents. The result was a far-reaching antebellum movement that would shape perceptions of nuns and women more broadly in America.

Abstract:
This chapter examines William E. Scott's murals at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago, including his 1936 Life of Christ series. Originally a synagogue designed by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler in 1891, Pilgrim became the home of one the country's most politically influential black churches when sold to the congregation in 1920. In the 1930s Thomas A. Dorsey introduced blues singing into regular church services, making Baptist the birthplace of gospel music and one of the first megachurches in the United States. The chapter considers the support provided by Junius C. Austin, a prominent advocate of social change and black empowerment, to Scott's goals to create images that promoted black pride through a very conventional, representational painting style at Pilgrim Baptist Church. It also discusses the role of Scott and Dorsey in creating a visually and sonically inclusive atmosphere at the church. Finally, it highlights rebirth or resurrection, politically and socially, as the underlying theme of much of the rhetoric about the future of African Americans during the period.
