Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the available epidemiological evidence supporting the current diagnoses grouped in the disruptive behavior disorder (DBD) cluster. It seems DBDs are common disorders, but although researchers have made great strides in capturing the prevalence of these disorders in normal and clinical populations, and although there are some very solid longitudinal findings, there are still many unknowns that need to be corrected. Most of the difficulties encountered in epidemiology are a function of the ongoing changes in the descriptive diagnostic criteria and the lack of a truly state-of-the-art three-level epidemiological design. This chapter discusses these issues including implications for clinical practice.

Abstract:
There is a deep analogy between the physics of crystalline solids and the behaviour of superfluids, dating back to the pioneering work of Phillip Anderson, Paul Martin, and others. The stiffness to shear deformations in a periodic crystal resembles the super-fluid density that controls the behaviour of supercurrents in neutral superfluids such as He4. Dislocations in solids have a close analogy with quantized vortices in superfluids. Remarkable recent experiments on the way rod-shaped bacteria elongate their cell walls have focused attention on the dynamics and interactions of point-like dislocation defects in partially-ordered cylindrical crystalline monolayers. In these lectures, we review the physics of superfluid helium films on cylinders and discuss how confinement in one direction affects vortex interactions with supercurrents. Although there are similarities with the way dislocations respond to strains on cylinders, important differences emerge due to the vector nature of the topological charges characterizing the dislocations.

A fundamental issue in treating anxiety disorders—and many other mental illnesses—is the lack of mechanistic understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. Recent studies, both in human and rodent, have taken the steps to elucidate the key brain regions and circuits that are implicated in anxiety disorders. In this chapter, we highlight how human and rodent studies can complement each other, and how an integrative approach provides bridges between the relevant but complex and imprecise phenomenology of human behavior and the solid findings of rodent neurobiology that can be difficult to extrapolate to human behavior and anxiety disorders. Recent findings in both humans and rodent models, and more importantly, how the two models have complemented each other, have enhanced our understanding of the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders.

First recognized in 1822, polymorphism of crystals is now a widely recognized and observed phenomenon, with both fundamental and commercial ramifications in disciplines and industries that study and utilize solid forms of matter. The purpose of this edition is to summarize and to bring up to date the current knowledge and understanding of polymorphism in molecular crystals, and to concentrate it in one source. The information has been gleaned from a wide variety (~2500) of sources in the open literature; however, because of the increasing commercial importance of the phenomenon, a significant portion of the information is less accessible, we have attempted to include both the information from those sources as well with full details of their citations. An introductory chapter on fundamental concepts, definitions, and historical development is followed by a presentation of the physical and structural bases for crystallization and polymorphism. The exploration of the crystal form landscape is described in detail, including polymorph screens, concomitant polymorphs, and disappearing polymorphs. A survey of analytical methods for studying and characterizing polymorphs is followed by a discussion of rapidly developing computational methods for studying and attempting to predict polymorphic behavior. A chapter with many examples of the utilization of polymorphic systems to investigate structure–property relationships in solids precedes three individual chapters on the role and importance of polymorphism in pharmaceuticals, high energy materials, and pigments. The book closes with a chapter on the role of polymorphism in establishing and protecting intellectual property connected with polymorphs through the patent system.

Characteristically, surfactants in aqueous solution adsorb at interfaces and form aggregates (micelles of various shapes and sizes, microemulsion droplets, and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases). This book is about the behaviour of surfactants in solution, at interfaces, and in colloidal dispersions. Adsorption at liquid/fluid and solid/liquid interfaces, and ways of characterizing the adsorbed surfactant films, are explained. Surfactant aggregation in systems containing only an aqueous phase and in systems with comparable volumes of water and nonpolar oil are each considered. In the latter case, the surfactant distribution between oil and water and the behaviour of the resulting Winsor systems are central to surfactant science and to an understanding of the formation of emulsions and microemulsions. Surfactant layers on particle or droplet surfaces can confer stability on dispersions including emulsions, foams, and particulate dispersions. The stability is dependent on the surface forces between droplet or particle surfaces and the way in which they change with particle separation. Surface forces are also implicated in wetting processes and thin liquid film formation and stability. The rheology of adsorbed films on liquids and of bulk colloidal dispersions is covered in two chapters. Like surfactant molecules, small solid particles can adsorb at liquid/fluid interfaces and the final two chapters focus on particle adsorption, the behaviour of adsorbed particle films and the stabilization of Pickering emulsions.

Characterization enables a microscopic understanding of the fundamental properties of materials (Science) to predict their macroscopic behavior (Engineering). With this focus, the book presents a comprehensive discussion of the principles of materials characterization and metrology. Characterization techniques are introduced through elementary concepts of bonding, electronic structure of molecules and solids, and the arrangement of atoms in crystals. Then, the range of electrons, photons, ions, neutrons and scanning probes, used in characterization, including their generation and related beam-solid interactions that determine or limit their use, are presented. This is followed by ion-scattering methods, optics, optical diffraction, microscopy, and ellipsometry. Generalization of Fraunhofer diffraction to scattering by a three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in crystals, leads to X-ray, electron, and neutron diffraction methods, both from surfaces and the bulk. Discussion of transmission and analytical electron microscopy, including recent developments, is followed by chapters on scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopies. It concludes with elaborate tables to provide a convenient and easily accessible way of summarizing the key points, features, and inter-relatedness of the different spectroscopy, diffraction, and imaging techniques presented throughout. This chapter discusses how the myth that sexual rights are Western impositions has taken solid root in African theological and political discourse, in spite of the established fact that homosexuality was practiced in traditional societies. Right-leaning American and African religious and political leaders unabashedly claim that homosexual behaviors were introduced by Western progressives—giving them a neocolonial nexus. Sadly, scapegoating the West for what is essentially African diversity in sexual behaviors increases the culture of silence that surrounds sexuality across the continent. However, there is undoubtedly a very public outcry or countermobilization against homosexuality in today's Africa. Postcolonial Africa is highly critical of colonial laws and values, but one colonial legacy is the English law that reads the same across Anglophone Africa.

In the recent years the theory of the fluctuating LB, as it was proposed and developed by A.J.C. Ladd in the early 90s, has undergone major developments, both at the level of theoretical foundations and practical implementation. This Chapter provides a cursory view of such developments, with special focus on the general formulation of fluid–solid interactions within the Lattice Boltzmann formalism. Clearly, the rheological behavior of these suspensions is highly accepted by the way the suspended particles interact with the fluid and among themselves. From the mathematical and computational standpoint, this configures a technically thick issue, namely the treatment of fluid-solid moving boundaries, in a more macroscopic-oriented context also known as fluid-structure interactions (FSI). In this chapter, the physics of wet granular matter is discussed. The practical significance of wet granular matter goes of course well beyond the construction of sand sculptures. Most industrial raw materials are solids and come in granular form, and the processes into which they feed involve their being mixed with liquids and agglomerated, conveyed, kneaded, or cast in moulds. For appropriately engineering these processes, including the minimization of energy consumption, a deep understanding of the mechanical properties of this class of materials is indispensable. Furthermore, if we want to mitigate, or even reliably predict, such devastating events as land slides or mud flows, we need to study the dynamical behaviour of wet granular matter in detail. This applies as well to other, similar systems of relevance, such as ice and snow avalanches, which can be modelled as wet granular systems as well.

This chapter describes the challenges that are unique to the assessment of the young child. A preschool child may not respond to standardized testing in a predictable way. A solid understanding of the developmental patterns of young children is necessary to accurately interpret evaluation results. The difficulties inherent in this process are described, as well as the benefits. The domains of the assessment process are outlined, including cognitive and learning ability, preacademic skill development, motor skills, and speech and language development. Issues related to behavior and attention are also addressed. Various approaches to preschool assessment are presented, including observational approaches in the natural setting as well as standardized testing, outlining benefits and cautions when working with this population.

Formally, the title of this chapter is a statement of the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. A large number of stellar objects exist in the balance between gravity and pressure, with the large ‘zoo’ of observed types being due to the various physical phenomena providing the latter. This chapter is devoted to various applications of that equilibrium. Some cases can be solved exactly, such as spheres of solid rock or ice; some cases can only be solved in detail numerically, notably degenerate white dwarfs up to the Chandrasekhar mass limit. For other cases, analytical approximations such as a version of the virial theorem are helpful in understanding underlying structure and behaviour.

‘Probing the Earth with isotopes’ shows how, using isotopes, we have come to understand the structure and behaviour of the Earth. The outer few tens of kilometres are divided into continental and oceanic crust. Below the crust, the sub-surface is divided into the mantle and the core. From the base of the crust to about 2,800 km depth, the Earth is rocky and composed of minerals like olivine and pyroxene that are rich in magnesium, iron, and calcium. From about 2,800 km to about 5,100 km depth the outer core is liquid. The remaining 1,200 km or so to the centre of the Earth is solid metal.

‘Ancient reefs and islands’ illustrates that the present day ecology and organization of species on a reef and their behaviour—basically how a reef works—is the result of a very long heritage. Limestone-deposited structures of the Pre-Cambrian, Cambrian, Ordovician, Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous periods, the organisms that created them (including ancestors of today’s sponges and corals), and key extinctions are described along with the three different kinds of coral islands seen around the tropical world: coral cays, islands with a solid limestone core, and volcanic or basaltic islands fringed with coral reef. The future of current reef systems, the effects of ocean changes, and the resulting impact on humanity are considered.

Thermal physics deals with collections of large numbers of particles—typically 1023 or so. Examples include the air in a balloon, the water in a lake, the electrons in a chunk of metal, and the photons given off by the sun. We can't possibly follow every detail of the motions of so many particles. So in thermal physics we assume that these motions are random, and we use the laws of probability to predict how the material as a whole ought to behave. Alternatively, we can measure the bulk properties of a material, and from these infer something about the particles it is made of. This book will give you a working understanding of thermal physics, assuming that you have already studied introductory physics and calculus. You will learn to apply the general laws of energy and entropy to engines, refrigerators, chemical reactions, phase transformations, and mixtures. You will also learn to use basic quantum physics and powerful statistical methods to predict in detail how temperature affects molecular speeds, vibrations of solids, electrical and magnetic behaviors, emission of light, and exotic low-temperature phenomena. The problems and worked examples explore applications not just within physics but also to engineering, chemistry, biology, geology, atmospheric science, astrophysics, cosmology, and everyday life.
