Abstract:
This paper reviews the prospect of a radical redefinition of the relationship between society, technology, and Nature as posited within Paolo Soleri’s Arcology theory, and anticipates a transformative social order and environmental setting in support of sustainability as demonstrated within the urban laboratory Arcosanti. It locates the roots of Soleri's ecological architecture within a rejection of urban sprawl emerging from his early apprenticship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West in Arizona, and argues that his own theoretical model, in presenting a fusion of architecture and ecology, prefigures a utopia of transcendence and offers a more rational planned response to the challenges of our age, while offering environmental movements a vision of what a sustainable urban future might look like. The paper argues that the positive utopian tendencies in Soleri’s work should be reaffirmed and, at the same time, it underlines an urgent need for multi-aspect and multi-disciplinary research, and postgraduate education, to be undertaken at Arcosanti, to test the parameters of micro- and macro-structures within alternative models of ecological design. In concluding the paper gives acknowledgement to the ongoing work of the Cosanti Foundation’s Board of Directors and its new Strategic Plan Steering Committee, and their commitment to attract renewed levels of financial and human resource in support of the urban laboratory’s unfinished business.

Abstract:
___Abstract: In the title of the article: “About the cities: the look of yesterday and today” is intended to describe its content and the plan of observation of different approaches about what has been understood and judged as a city since the second half of the eighteenth century until the present. As a starting point, an article by the Austrian historian Carl Schorske argues that, from the last decades of the seventeenth century to the first decades of the twentieth century, three ways of looking at cities are seen, either as spaces of virtue, vice or something “beyond good and evil”. The text states that these three ways of looking at and judging cities have lasted throughout the twentieth century and even at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The most significant approaches to urban phenomena, especially the concepts of “metropolis”, “megalopolis” and its sequel, “ecumenopolis”, which cities have been called, are considered because of their extension and complexity. The following section gives a quick reading of the Team X proposals in which there is criticism of the functional city and proposals directed more towards the experience of the city than to abstract schemes. Two “futuristic” proposals are described: “Spatial Urbanism”, by Yona Friedmann and “Arcología”, by Paolo Soleri. In a separate section, contemporary approaches to cities are studied as spaces of “complexity, multiculturality and information”. A brief section proposes questions about the look at the Latin American city, based on authors such as José Luís Romero and Jacques Aprile Gniset. In the bibliography, the texts consulted are reported. ___Keywords: Urban history, cities, metropolis, megalopolis, ecumenopolis. ___Recibido: 13 de julio 2016. Aceptado: 7 de septiembre de 2016.

Abstract:
In this paper a novel quaternary alloy is formed by adding a small amount of rare earth Er (RE) into Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy to improve its technological properties. The influences of Er on the resistivity and spreading properties of the novel solder alloy were systematically investigated. Studied results show that adding 0.25~0.75wt.% RE into Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy, the resistivity changes little, while the wettability demonstrated a significant improvement. The spreading area reaches 27.22mm2 and increases by 23% than the Bi5Sb8Sn matrix soler when the content of RE is 0.5wt.%.With increasing the content of Er ,the spreading area of solder alloy decreases, but it is still higher than that of the Bi5Sb8Sn solder alloy. It is mainly closely related to new phases with RE ,the form of compounds and thickness of interface intermetallic compounds in the Bi5Sb8SnRE solder alloy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to pending legislations and market pressure, lead-free solders will replace Sn–Pb solders in 2006. Among the lead-free solders being studied, eutectic Sn–Ag, Sn–Cu and Sn–Ag–Cu are promising candidates and Sn–3.8Ag–0.7Cu could be the most appropriate replacement due to its overall balance of properties. In order to garner more understanding of lead-free solders and their application in flip-chip scale packages, the properties of lead free solders, including the wettability, intermetallic compound (IMC) growth and distribution, mechanical properties, reliability and corrosion resistance, were studied and are presented in this thesis.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) based system-in-package (SiP) is an emerging multilayer module technology for wireless communication applications, mainly due to its excellent high-frequency material properties. LTCC-SiP modules are typically soldered onto an organic motherboard, but the lifetime of the 2nd-level solder joints is often poor due to the high stress level of the joints in test/field conditions. Moreover, using lead-free solders in the interconnections of LTCC modules raised new questions about the feasibility and reliability of the solder joints in LTCC applications. Therefore, the characteristic features of the 2nd-level solder joint configuration were determined in this thesis work. It was proved that collapsible Sn4Ag0.5Cu spheres are not a feasible option in LTCC/PWB assemblies with a large global thermal mismatch; a non-collapsible ball grid array (BGA) joint with a plastic core solder balls (PCSBs) was required to attain an adequate lifetime for such assemblies. To enhance the thermal fatigue endurance of the non-collapsible lead-free joints, a novel BGA joint consisting of Sn7In4.1Ag0.5Cu solder and PCSBs was developed. Moreover, this work proved that there is a relationship between the primary failure mechanisms of various Sn-based lead-free solders and thermomechanically induced stress level in the present non-collapsible BGA joint configuration. The effect of the plating material of the solder lands on the failure mechanism of the BGA joints in the LTCC/PWB assemblies was studied. The results showed that the adverse phenomena related to the sintered Ag-based metallization materials can be avoided using electroless nickel with immersion gold (ENIG) as a deposit material. On the other hand, this study also demonstrated that the inadequate adhesion strength of the commercial base metallization in the ENIG-plated modules resulted in the disadvantageous failure mechanism of the test assemblies. Therefore, the criteria for material selection and the design aspects of reliable 2nd-level interconnections are discussed thoroughly in this thesis.

Abstract:
AbstractSMT solvers are highly complex pieces of software with performance, robustness, and correctness as key requirements. Complementing traditional testing techniques for these solvers with randomized stress testing has been shown to be quite effective. Recent work has showcased the value of input fuzzing for finding issues, but this approach typically does not comprehensively test a solver’s API. Previous work on model-based API fuzzing was tailored to a single solver and a small subset of SMT-LIB. We present Murxla, a comprehensive, modular, and highly extensible model-based API fuzzer for SMT solvers. Murxla randomly generates valid sequences of solver API calls based on a customizable API model, with full support for the semantics and features of SMT-LIB. It is solver-agnostic but extensible to allow for solver-specific testing and supports option fuzzing, cross-checking with other solvers, translation to SMT-LIBv2, and SMT-LIBv2 input fuzzing. Our evaluation confirms its efficacy in finding issues in multiple state-of-the-art SMT solvers.

Abstract:
AbstractSatisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) is an enabling technology with many applications, especially in computer-aided verification. Due to advances in research and strong demand for solvers, there are many SMT solvers available. Since different implementations have different strengths, it is often desirable to be able to substitute one solver by another. Unfortunately, the solvers have vastly different APIs and it is not easy to switch to a different solver (lock-in effect). To tackle this problem, we developed JavaSMT, which is a solver-independent framework that unifies the API for using a set of SMT solvers. This paper describes version 3 of JavaSMT, which now supports eight SMT solvers and offers a simpler build and update process. Our feature comparisons and experiments show that different SMT solvers significantly differ in terms of feature support and performance characteristics. A unifying Java API for SMT solvers is important to make the SMT technology accessible for software developers. Similar APIs exist for other programming languages.

AbstractWhen augmented with a Pseudo-Boolean (PB) solver, a Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solver can apply apply powerful reasoning methods to determine when a set of parity or cardinality constraints, extracted from the clauses of the input formula, has no solution. By converting the intermediate constraints generated by the PB solver into ordered binary decision diagrams (BDDs), a proof-generating, BDD-based SAT solver can then produce a clausal proof that the input formula is unsatisfiable. Working together, the two solvers can generate proofs of unsatisfiability for problems that are intractable for other proof-generating SAT solvers. The PB solver can, at times, detect that the proof can exploit modular arithmetic to give smaller BDD representations and therefore shorter proofs.

Abstract:
AbstractThe propagation redundant (PR) proof system generalizes the resolution and resolution asymmetric tautology proof systems used by conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL) solvers. PR allows short proofs of unsatisfiability for some problems that are difficult for CDCL solvers. Previous attempts to automate PR clause learning used hand-crafted heuristics that work well on some highly-structured problems. For example, the solver SaDiCaL incorporates PR clause learning into the CDCL loop, but it cannot compete with modern CDCL solvers due to its fragile heuristics. We present PReLearn, a preprocessing technique that learns short PR clauses. Adding these clauses to a formula reduces the search space that the solver must explore. By performing PR clause learning as a preprocessing stage, PR clauses can be found efficiently without sacrificing the robustness of modern CDCL solvers. On a large portion of SAT competition benchmarks we found that preprocessing with PReLearn improves solver performance. In addition, there were several satisfiable and unsatisfiable formulas that could only be solved after preprocessing with PReLearn. PReLearn supports proof logging, giving a high level of confidence in the results.

Abstract:
Solders are used extensively as electrical interconnects in microelectronics packaging. Because of environmental concerns, lead-based solders are being replaced by Sn/Ag and Sn/Ag/Cu based solder materials. Since the thermomechanical reliability of modern electronic devices depends on, to a large extent, the fatigue and creep behavior of the solder joints, it is imperative to understand the deformation behavior of these new lead-free solders. This study conducted extensive thermomechanical testing on several commercial lead-free solder alloys. Anand viscoplastic model was used to describe the behavior of these materials with new curve fitting techniques. A modified Anand models was proposed that can yield a more accurate description of lead-free solders.

Abstract:
As environmental issues are raising more interest and are becoming crucial factors in all parts of the world, more and more environmental-friendly electronics products are emerging. Usually this means the introduction of products with lead-free solders. However, the reliability of lead-free solders is still a serious concern despite the vast research done in this field. This paper will describe the interconnect reliability of three kinds of solder joints respectively prepared with lead-free solder paste and lead-free PBGA components, lead-free solder paste and tin-lead-silver PBGA components, and tin-lead solder paste and tin-lead-silver PBGA components. Lead-free and tin-lead solders were composed of eutectic tin-silver-copper and tin-lead, respectively. In addition, the study also presents the effect of multiple reflow times. The study focuses on the microstructures of different assemblies. The particular interest is on the assemblies soldered with lead-free solder paste and tin-lead-silver PBGA components, since the SnPbAg solder on the bumps of the PBGA components were exposed to the reflow profile meant for the lead-free SnAgCu solder. Thus, these SnPbAg solder bumps were in the molten state almost twice as long as the rest of the solders. This had a notable effect on the reliability of these solder joints as we will be showing later in this paper. The test boards were temperature-cycled for 2500 cycles between −40 and +125°C (a 30-minute cycle). PBGA solder joint failures were monitored with a real time monitoring system. Optical and scanning electron microscopy was used to inspect the broken solder joints and their microstructure. The results of tests indicate that the number of reflow times can significantly affect the lifetime of PBGA solder joints. The most notable changes can be seen in the solder joints made with tin-lead-silver PBGA components and tin-silver-copper solder paste soldered with a lead-free reflow profile. The general trend was that the reliability of the solder joints increased in proportion to the number of reflow times. Mainly two factors are believed to have the major effect on the reliability of PBGA solder joints, voids, and microstructural changes in solder.

Abstract:
The mechanical shear fatigue test has been performed to look for the effect of silver content on the fatigue properties of Sn-xAg-0.5Cu (x = 1, 2, 3 and 4) flip chip interconnections. As the strength of the solder alloy increases with increasing silver content, the increase in silver content results in preventing a shear plastic deformation of solder bump. Therefore, the flip chip joints made using higher silver content solder such as 3 and 4Ag exhibit longer fatigue life, if the same levels of displacement is applied. The fatigue ductility of the solder decreases with increasing the silver content. Therefore, the fatigue endurance of the 1Ag solder itself is superior to other solders in high plastic strain regime, even though the strength of the solder is the lowest in the solders tested. Based on this study, the 3Ag solder might exhibit good fatigue performance for all condition, and the 1Ag solder is optimum for severe strain condition.

Abstract:
Large Neighbourhood Search (LNS) is an algorithmic framework for optimization problems that can yield good performance in many domains. In this paper, we present a method for applying LNS to improve anytime maximum satisfiability (MaxSAT) solving by introducing a neighbourhood selection policy that shows good empirical performance. We show that our LNS solver can often improve the suboptimal solutions produced by other anytime MaxSAT solvers. When starting with a suboptimal solution of reasonable quality, our approach often finds a better solution than the original anytime solver can achieve. We demonstrate that implementing our LNS solver on top of three different state-of-the-art anytime solvers improves the anytime performance of all three solvers within the standard time limit used in the incomplete tracks of the annual MaxSAT Evaluation.

Abstract:
Soldering is the default joining process in the electronic packaging industry. Solder joints are obtained by interaction of the substrate with the molten solder. Soldering reaction and the resulting dissolution of substrate material is a complicated process. Reliability and strength of solder joints during service have always been the critical issues in electronic packaging industry. Mechanical strength of solder joints can significantly be increased by employing composite solders. These composite solders are sometimes obtained by incorporation of micro- and nano-size metal particles in the solder paste before the soldering process. Better understanding of substrate-solder interaction is important for the proper selection of the reinforcing particle size and composition. In the present research the relative importance of interface reaction and diffusion has been studied. Dissolution kinetics of a planar substrate and spherical particles has been investigated. Our results show that the dissolution is governed both by interface kinetics and long-range diffusion. Non-equilibrium behavior has been observed in the early stage of the process. It has been observed that at the early stage the dissolution process is governed by interface kinetics, while diffusion became the rate controlling mechanism at the later phase. A mathematically rigorous model has been proposed for simulating the dissolution of the substrate in the liquid lead-free solders. The study is extended to investigate the dissolution of spherical particles in molten solders. The results show that the initial particle dimension plays a critical role in the end particle size after the reflow process.

Abstract:
A framework is developed to integrate MFiX (Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges) with advanced linear solvers in Trilinos. MFiX is a widely used open source general purpose multiphase solver developed by National Energy Technology Laboratories and written in Fortran. Trilinos is an objected-oriented open source software development platform from Sandia National Laboratories for solving large scale multiphysics problems. The framework handles the different data structures in Fortran and C++ and exchanges the information from MFiX to Trilinos and vice versa. The integrated solver, called MFiX-Trilinos hereafter, provides next-generation computational capabilities including scalable linear solvers for distributed memory massively parallel computers. In this paper, the solution from the standard linear solvers in MFiX-Trilinos is validated against the same from MFiX for 2D and 3D fluidized bed problems. The standard iterative solvers considered in this work are Bi-Conjugate Gradient Stabilized (BiCGStab) and Generalized minimal residual methods (GMRES) as the matrix is non-symmetric in nature. The stopping criterion set for the iterative solvers is same. It is observed that the solution from the integrated solver and MFiX is in good agreement.

Abstract:
The ever increasing miniaturization of electronic devices has pressed the need to find the alternate solders that can deliver the necessary strength and reliability of the solder joints. In this view the development of composite solders has become the focus for many researchers in recent years. This paper presents a mathematical model to simulate the dissolution behavior of metal particles in composite solders during reflow process. The mathematical model is based on basic mass diffusion process and involves the actual physical properties of various species (particle, IMC, solder etc) of the system. Thermal effects and related thermodynamic constraints together with the non-equilibrium interface kinetics of dissolving micro and nano-size particles are also considered. The growth of intermetallic compound (IMC) and terminal size of embedded particles for various reflow conditions are analyzed using the model. Dissolution behavior of micro-size Cu particles in lead-free, Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloy solder was studied. The end particle size and the thickness of the IMC layer around the particles are presented for various initial particle sizes and reflow conditions. Effects of initial copper content in Sn-Ag-Cu alloy solder and the interface reaction kinetics on the dissolution of copper particles and growth of intermetallic compound are also investigated. Results of the model show the interesting behavior of micron-size particle dissolution in liquid solders. The reaction kinetics at the IMC/solder interface was seen to play an important role in the dissolution of copper particles.

Abstract:
This paper reports on a new paradigm for highly flexible solder design, proffering high electrical and thermal conductivity, in conjunction with good mechanical compliance, via a novel Liquid Phase Sintering (LPS) approach. The new LPS solders comprise a high melting point phase HMP (e.g., Cu or Sn) with a small amount of a low melting-point phase LMP (e.g., In) at grain boundaries, such that different properties can be controlled by different constituents. In general, conductivity is dominated by the majority HMP constituent, while deformation is controlled by the minority, LMP grain boundary constituent. The LPS solders are suitable for both thermal interface material (TIM) and interconnect applications. As the application space for solders shifts in the future, and requirements for new property-sets emerge, the flexibility of the LPS solder approach will allow integration of different materials into new LPS solder-systems.

Abstract:
In this study, varying volume percentage of titanium diboride particulates were successfully incorporated into Sn-Ag-Cu solder, to synthesize lead-free composite solders. The composite solders were synthesized via the powder metallurgy route of: blending, compaction, sintering and extrusion. The extruded materials were then characterized for their microstructural development, thermal and mechanical properties. With increasing volume percentage of titanium diboride particulates, the composite solders experienced a corresponding decrease in density values but porosity levels were observed to increase. Microstructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy revealed uniform distribution of reinforcement particulates and a fairly good interfacial integrity between the particulates and the solder matrix. Thermomechanical analysis showed that presence of titanium diboride particulates as reinforcements, decreased the average coefficient of thermal expansion of the solder composites. A change in the mechanical properties was also observed with the presence of increasing particulates. An attempt is made, to correlate the increasing presence of titanium diboride particulates with the microstructural development, as well as the mechanical and thermal properties of solder matrix.

Abstract:
This study addresses the development of lead-free nanocomposite solders. Lead-free composite solders were successfully synthesized, with varying amount of nanosized Y2O3 particulates incorporated into 95.8 Sn - 3.5 Ag - 0.7 Cu solder. These composite materials were fabricated using the powder metallurgy technique involving blending, compaction, sintering and extrusion. The extruded materials were then characterized in terms of their physical properties, microstructural development, thermal and mechanical properties. Results revealed that with the incorporation of increasing amount of reinforcements, the density values of the composite solders decreased while their corresponding porosity levels increased. Thermomechanical analysis of the solder nanocomposites showed that the use of reinforcements lowered the average coefficient of thermal expansion of the solder materials. Moreover, the results of mechanical property characterizations revealed that the addition of reinforcements aids in improving the overall strength of the nanocomposite solder. Particular emphasis is placed in this study to correlate the effect of increasing presence of Y2O3 particulates with the properties of the resultant nanocomposite materials. These advanced interconnect materials will benefit industries like the microelectronics flip chip assembly and packaging, MEMS systems and NEMS systems.

Abstract:
The Smart Energy Design Assistance Center assessed the administrative, technical, and economic aspects of feasibility related to the procurement and installation of photovoltaic solar systems on IDOT-owned buildings and lands. To address administrative feasibility, we explored three main ways in which IDOT could procure solar projects: power purchase agreement (PPA), direct purchase, and land lease development. Of the three methods, PPA and direct purchase are most applicable for IDOT. While solar development is not free of obstacles for IDOT, it is administratively feasible, and regulatory hurdles can be adequately met given suitable planning and implementation. To evaluate IDOT assets for solar feasibility, more than 1,000 IDOT sites were screened and narrowed using spatial analytic tools. A stakeholder feedback process was used to select five case study sites that allowed for a range of solar development types, from large utility-scale projects to small rooftop systems. To evaluate financial feasibility, discussions with developers and datapoints from the literature were used to create financial models. A large solar project request by IDOT can be expected to generate considerable attention from developers and potentially attractive PPA pricing that would generate immediate cash flow savings for IDOT. Procurement partnerships with other state agencies will create opportunities for even larger projects with better pricing. However, in the near term, it may be difficult for IDOT to identify small rooftop or other small on-site solar projects that are financially feasible. This project identified two especially promising solar sites so that IDOT can evaluate other solar site development opportunities in the future. This project also developed a web-based decision-support tool so IDOT can identify potential sites and develop preliminary indications of feasibility. We recommend that IDOT begin the process of developing at least one of their large sites to support solar electric power generation.
