Abstract:
Environmental Context. Surveys to assess the body burden of mercury in fish to support research or contamination advisory programs typically involve capturing and killing fish and analyzing muscle tissue for mercury. Lethal sampling may not be feasible in protected waters or in studies involving threatened or endangered species. We analyzed tail fin samples of two fish species for total mercury and compared results with muscle-tissue mercury and concluded that fin-Hg can be used as a predictor of muscle-Hg. This approach enables catch and release studies for mercury in fish. Abstract. The caudal (tail) fins from 17 walleye (Sander vitreus) and 12 northern pike (Esox lucius) from three northern Arizona lakes (Long Lake, Soldier Lake, and Upper Lake Mary) were analyzed for total-Hg by combustion–atomic absorption spectrometry. Results indicate that the fin contains measurable Hg that correlates with muscle-Hg concentrations. As the body burden of Hg increased, the concentration in the fin increased relative to the muscle. Mercury concentrations also increased with fish length and weight, although the relationship was lake- and species-dependent. Fish from Soldier Lake had the most efficient uptake of Hg, likely due to the trophic structure of the lake or the condition of the fish, but possibly due to an acute source of Hg. Overall, this study demonstrates that caudal fin clippings can be used as a non-lethal predictor of muscle-Hg concentrations, which can reduce the number of fish killed in routine monitoring programs.

Abstract:
Award-winning author Tim O’Brien was sent to Vietnam as a foot soldier in 1969, when American combat troops were gradually withdrawn from the country. A closer look at his Vietnam war stories reveals that he indeed touched upon almost all issues or problems of American soldiers in this “bad” war; yet not many peer-reviewed authors or online literary analysis websites could identify and discuss them all. The purpose of this article is to address the war details in O’Brien’s In the Lake of the Woods and its historical perspective, so that middle and high school readers can understand the meaning behind Tim O'Brien's stories and know the entire big Vietnam War picture. Specifically, this article discusses the following issues that are raised by O’Brien in this novel: the Mỹ Lai Massacre and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam War veterans. In addition, the Mỹ Lai Massacre cover-up, forgotten heroes of Mỹ Lai, and soldiers’ moral courage are also presented.

Abstract:
The United States Army placed emphasis on decreasing the load an individual Soldier carries by reducing the weight of ammunition through the use of polymer-cased ammunition. This paradigm shift from brass to polymer raises concerns over the implementation aspect of this new procedure into the US Army’s current ammunition production process. Our client, Project Manager Maneuver Ammunition Systems (PM-MAS) sponsored our team to analyze various candidate solutions using a methodology grounded in value-focused thinking, and recommend an implementation method to produce 7.62 mm polymer-cased ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Lake City, Missouri. This paper outlines the application of systems thinking concepts, various problem definition techniques and value modeling in order to effectively compare three given scenarios using a total value score versus cost analysis for each candidate solution. Our final recommendation is to implement the Buy scenario because of its total score of 63.5 and estimated cost of $14.62 million.

AbstractShoksha quartzite is a heritage stone of international importance. This stone, a hematitic quartzite composed predominantly of quartz with subordinate amounts of chalcedony and sericite, is Jatulian (2.3–2.0 Ga) in age. The sarcophagus of Napoleon I, Emperor of France, inside the Dôme des Invalides in Paris was cut from Shoksha quartzite quarried by Lake Onega, Russia. The details of the sarcophagus were cut and polished in Paris using steam machinery, an early use of this method. A monument to Russian Emperor, Nicholas I, in St Petersburg is also made in part of this quartzite. This stone also has been utilized in the Grave of the Unknown Soldier and the monument to Heroic Cities near the Kremlin in Moscow, as well as for other uses.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the expanse of the salt lakes of the Lake Eyre basin lives a species of ant of the genus Melophorus (as yet unnamed), both on the edges of the salt-pan and on the salt-pan itself. Most of the foragers are small (~3.0–5.0 mm), but ~10% of the ants seen foraging are much larger (~7.0 mm) and may form a soldier caste. Foragers are thermophilic and show diurnal activity, displaying a single-peaked activity profile across the day, with activity time limited to 2–6 h at most each day (during the late-summer study period, 28 February to 28 March 2012). They forage largely for dead arthropods, but also occasionally bring home plant materials. Foraging success (not considering possible liquid food intake) is ~20%, resembling the success rate of their congener Melophorus bagoti, which inhabits cluttered environments. When displaced with food from a feeder, the ants head systematically and precisely in the feeder-to-nest direction, thus exhibiting path integration abilities involving celestial compass cues. The study of this species provides an interesting comparative perspective in contrasting desert ants of the same genus and thus genetic heritage inhabiting habitats differing in complexity of panoramic terrestrial cues as well as comparing ecologically similar species inhabiting the same type of habitat (in the present case, salt-pans) but differing in their phylogenetic relationships.

Abstract:
We compile, map, and discuss global elevational, latitudinal, thermal, and rainfall extremes of termite localities from literature sources and unpublished records. Rugitermes laticollis from Ecuador and Bolivia occurs at higher elevation (2700-3600 m) than any other termite species. Termites span the globe from 54.3°N (Zootermopsis angusticollis in British Columbia (B.C.), Canada) to 48.9°S (Porotermes quadricollis in Magdalena, Chile). The coldest locality supporting termites (Reticulitermes sp.) is at Churn Creek, B.C., where the mean annual temperature is 4°C. Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where Heterotermes aureus and Gnathamitermes perplexus occur, has the highest recorded temperature maximum (52°C) for a termite locality. Cryptotermes brevis and Neotermes chilensis are endemic to the Pacific Coast of Peru and Chile where rain is essentially absent. We further provide locality extremes for six termite families from six zoogeographical regions. In addition, the winged imago of Ru. laticollis is redescribed and the soldier is described for the first time.

Abstract:
The current environmental situation in areas located in the “Chernobyl footprint” in Russia is con-sidered in the paper. Radiation contamination in different parts of the “footprint” varies from the maximum level in the exclusion zones to the level close to the background in areas with low level of radioactive contamination. Environmental monitoring data and calculated density of soil con-tamination with radionuclides in the vicinities of residential areas in Bryansk, Kaluga, Tula, Orel and Novgorod regions were used as reference data for assessment of radiation dose rates and ecological risks for the reference biological species: the elk (Alces alces), red-backed mouse (Myodes glareolus), the Archangel fir (Pinus sylvestris), brandling (Lumbricus terrestris), the pike (Esox lucius), and the fresh-water soldier (Stratiotes aloides). The integrated contamination index, that is the sum of ratios of registered radionuclides contamination density to the reference levels, was used as the indicator of territory radioecological safety. The calculation was made in accord-ance with the Roshydromet Recommendations R-52.18.853-2016. The highest doses to the biota and ecological risks were registered in 1986. Radiation dose rates to some vertebrates in the most contaminated districts of the Bryansk region in May 1986 exceeded ecologically safe radiation level of 1 mGy/day. Doses to reference biological species inhabited outside exclusion zones within the period of May-December 1986 were lower than the radioecological safety level. After decay of 131I and other short-lived radionuclides 137Cs became the basic contributor to the biota dose. Radiation dose rate to the terrestrials and radio-ecological safety index gradually decreased due to radionuclides physical decay over the period of 1986-2020. Current radiation doses to the terrestrials inhabited the most contaminated districts were, on average, one order below the safe radiation dose to the vertebrates, two orders below the safety radiation level to the Archangel fir and three orders be-low the safety radiation dose to the soil invertebrates. Current radiation dose rates to inhabitants of the lake of Kozhanovskoe, one of the most contaminated areas due to the radioactive fallout, current radiation dose rates to the lake fish were two orders below the safe level, radiation dose rates to algae were three orders below the safety level, however, they still are above the back-ground level. Current indices of integrated contamination in areas of the Chernobyl radioactive “footprint” are inhomogeneous. Current indices of integrated contamination in the majority of contaminates areas are dozens times and the indices in low radiation contaminated areas are hundreds times lower than ecological safety level. The highest indices occur in a number of dis-tricts of Bryansk region but they are lower than ecological safety level, however in some sites in exclusion zones the indices exceed the ecological safety level. These sites are unique natural testing grounds for radio-ecological research and monitoring of the environment and radiation protection development. In this connection it is recommended to continue long term research and development of radiological protection of the environment.

Attridge, Steve. "The soldier in late Victorian society : images and ambiguities." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1993. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4165/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines effects of the Boer War (1899- 1902) on images of the soldier. The thesis argues that the trauma of the Boer War for British political culture be may explored in changes in representations of the soldier to be found in the production and reception of contemporary literary genres and popular forms. This change cannot be theorized adequately in terms of an intensification of patriotism, the development of nationalism or a crisis of imperialism. A pervasive approach, often drawing on the work of Edward Said, has as its central premise that imperial polity imposes a discourse of domination on its relacitrant Other. This approach will be found to lack the conceptual nuances needed to address the different forms of representation examined in the thesis. These different forms of representation articulate a range of responses to the repercussion of the war on the relation between the shifting external boundaries of Empire and the internal boundaries of civil society between state and civil society, civilian and military identities, class antagonisms and national projections. Changes in the image of the soldier bear the irresistable politicization as well as the contrary paradoxical burdens of the attempted pacification of those related external and internal boundaries. The thesis includes a study of a range of sources, including as yet undiscussed texts, which verify and explore further the argument that literary and popular forms and representations display the changing fault lines of political culture rather than simply present or act as vehicles for a truiumphalist and unequivocal discursive domination.

Rushworth, Alan. "Soldiers and tribesmen : the Roman army and tribal society in late imperial Africa." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1733.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with two groups which guarded North Africa's frontiers during the Later Roman Empire, firstly the regular army, and secondly, the gentiles, or tribesmen. The subject is introduced in Chapter I, and the academic debate on this subject summarised . In Chapter II, the continued existence of a garrison of regular soldiers, in the fourth century sector commands (limites), is demonstrated. The present consensus regarding the manning of the limites would assign a much larger role to some kind of tribal militia. The actual role of the Moorish and Libyan tribes in frontier defence is analysed in the next chapter. They are seen to be essentially an adjunct to the limitanei rather than a replacement for them. The long involvement of African tribesmen in the military service of Rome is traced in Chapter IV. The field army is examined in Chapter V. A pattern of steady growth is discerned, gradually supplanting the limitanei. In Chapters VI and VIr attention is focussed once more on the frontier troops. The location of the limites listed in the Notitia Dignitatum, and their internal organisation are analysed in Chapter VI. Chapter VIr studies the duties of the limitanei. The essentially policing nature of their work is stressed. Finally, two cases of extensive tribal integration are studied and some comments made on the relations between the imperial administration and the tribal aristocracy. In conclusion, it is noted that soldiers and tribesmen did not occupy two separate worlds, a Romanised Africa and an Afrique oubliee. On the contrary they were often one and the same, as soldiers were probably recruited from amongst tribesmen, and formed part of a single frontier society.

Gosling, Edward Peter Joshua. "Tommy Atkins, War Office reform and the social and cultural presence of the late-Victorian army in Britain, c.1868-1899." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/4359.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of the soldier in late-Victorian Britain in light of the movement to rehabilitate the public image of the ordinary ranks initiated by the Cardwell-Childers Reforms. Venerated in popular culture, Tommy Atkins became a symbol of British imperial strength and heroism. Socially, however, attitudes to the rank-and-file were defined by a pragmatic realism purged of such sentiments, the likes of which would characterise the British public’s relationship with their army for over thirty years. Scholars of both imperial culture and the Victorian military have identified this dual persona of Tommy Atkins, however, a dedicated study into the true nature of the soldier’s position has yet to be undertaken. The following research will seek to redress this omission. The soldier is approached through the perspective of three key influences which defined his development. The first influence, the politics of the War Office, exposes a progressive series of schemes which, cultivated for over a decade, sought to redefine the soldier through the popularisation of military service and the professionalisation of the military’s public relations strategy and apparatus. A forgotten component of the Cardwell-Childers Reforms, the schemes have not before been scrutinised. Despite the ingenuity of the schemes devised, the social rehabilitation of the soldier failed, primarily, it will be argued, because the government refused to improve his pay. The public’s response to the Cardwell-Childers Reforms and the British perception of the ordinary soldier in the decades following their introduction form the second perspective. Through surveys of the local and London press and mainstream literature, it is demonstrated the soldier, in part as a result of the reforms, underwent a social transition, precipitated by his entering the public consciousness and encouraged by a resulting fascination in the military life. The final perspective presented in this thesis is from within the rank-and-file itself. Through the examination of specialist newspaper, diary and memoir material the direct experiences of the soldiers themselves are explored. Amid the extensive public and political discussion of their nature and status, the soldier also engaged in the debate. The perspective of the rank-and-file provides direct context for the established perspectives of the British public and the War Office, but also highlights how the soldier both supported and opposed the reforms and was acutely aware of the social status he possessed. This thesis will examine the public and political treatment of the soldier in the late-nineteenth century and question how far the conflicting ideas of soldier-hero and soldier-beggar were reconciled.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consciously repressed by the current dominating culture, in Italy and Europe in the late mediaeval and early modern age death was addressed with greater confidence and awareness, and sometimes even with serenity. The modes of dying and of conceiving death – and the varied and rich religious and civil rituals that accompanied it – reflected the values and the choices of rich and poor, of kings and peasants, merchants and soldiers, nobles and churchmen, men and women. Several decades after the major studies that opened the road to these strands of research in Italy too (Ariès, Tenenti), this book offers a series of penetrating and suggestive explorations of a fascinating and complex theme which no reader can consider extraneous.

Abstract:
Turning fifty, Kelso planned to enlist “in the invincible little army of Liberalism” by lecturing across the country and publishing his books. A report he published from the road tried to explain desert mirages. In New York City, he met with other freethinkers and arranged to have some of his books printed. In Rochester, New York, he met with reformers and spiritualists. But his health would not permit him to be a public lecturer. For months, the disappointment nearly paralyzed him. On a train trip he saw another mirage and reflected that the weary desert traveler who leaves the true path to pursue a phantom lake was like people “who have left the paths of reason, science, and common-sense to follow the phantoms” of religion. Yet he himself soon converted to spiritualism, convinced that the spirits of his dead children hovered about to comfort him.

Abstract:
The chapter introduces the madzviti spirits of nineteenth-century Gaza Nguni warriors. Emphasizing the reality of semiotic objects, I explore the histories behind the madzviti’s emergence and the purposes for which the living awaken them. Rituals such as this rely on and reinforce habits that form the core conventions of spiritual and musical life. Their meaning depends on the histories, encounters, expectations, and desires that shape the spirits’ emergence and are shaped by their presence. Madzviti spirits lived as soldiers when the Gaza State ruled Ndau territories. This history is central to the transformation of the madzviti from soldier to spirit, from living to dead. Musicking facilitates the relationships between the living and the dead as well as the present with the past.

Abstract:
Letters 14 and 15 describe the two successive journeys that Brasseur undertook in the spring and summer of 1897. The first one – to the south-western corner of Lake Mweru and the Lubule River – was prompted by the mistaken assumption that a resupply caravan was due to transit through the area. The journey was cut short by the news of the Force Publique’s mutiny on the upper Ituri River in February. The second journey, to the capital of the Kazembe of the Lualaba, was intended to create more soldier outposts and to repress an anti-Yeke rising by the Bena Mitumba. From the upper Lualaba River, Brasseur and his party proceeded to the Luapula River, which they reached at the beginning of September, making their way back to Lofoi after visiting Mambilima Falls and some Yeke settlements in the western half of the lower Luapula valley.

Abstract:
This chapter shifts to the type character of the “lame” soldier, whose disabling foregrounds the conflict between martial labor and artisanal labor in the urban civic structure of early modern London. The chapter finds disability embedded within the early modern structure of citizenship, which makes the laboring bodies of artisans available for conscription to war and subjects them to uncompensated loss. The chapter also shows that the theater's staging of the lame soldier departs from early modern medical discourse. Surgical texts champion prosthetic devices, such as stilts or wooden legs, both to restore the limping body's movement and, just as significantly, to enable social recognition. The chapter contends the idea that lameness equates to unremarkable difference. It reveals that the lame soldier's quotidian deformity illuminates disability as a problem of social significance rather than function.

Abstract:
Abstract In the late nineteenth century, Americans celebrated white boy soldiers who had fought on both sides of the Civil War. Beginning in the 1880s, former underage soldiers began inserting themselves into the historical narrative. A large number wrote memoirs, and many more claimed the mantle of “youngest boy” to have served. Depictions of the Civil War as a “boys’ war” downplayed the conflict’s political importance, helping to promote a national memory of the Civil War based on white male heroism that could overcome lingering sectional tensions. Such narratives also aimed to teach boys the stalwart virtues, which seemed increasingly imperative in a new age of rising class conflict, overseas imperialism, Social Darwinism, and growing concerns over the socialization of male youth. Gone were the wartime images of fresh-faced, angelic soldier boys; instead, the Civil War’s boy soldiers were recast as adventuresome and fearless youths who exemplified American manhood.

Abstract:
Current trends in the automotive industry point to increasing role of electronics for vehicle control, safety, efficiency and entertainment. Examples include lane-departure warning systems, collision avoidance systems, vehicle stability systems, and drive assist systems. Many of the automotive electronics systems are located under the hood of the vehicle mounted directly on engine or on transmission with sustained exposure to temperatures greater than 150°C in conjunction with vibration. Solder joint fatigue is a dominant failure modes under high-temperature vibration. Industry migration to lead-free solders has resulted in a proliferation of a wide variety of solder alloy compositions many of which are based on formulation of Sn, Ag and Cu. While it is well known that solder interconnects, accrue damage much faster when vibrated at elevated temperatures, the models for assessment of life under simultaneous temperature and vibration are scarce. State-of-art reliability models for solder joints focus on single stresses of vibration or thermal cycling. There is need for models for evaluating the survivability of leadfree solder assemblies to ensure 10-years, 100,000 miles life in automotive environments. In this paper, a new model has been proposed for life prediction of electronics under simultaneous temperature-vibration.

Abstract:
Abstract Substrate modifications on the Integrated Circuit (IC) package provide opportunities for the Failure Analyst (FA) to troubleshoot a routing failure or allow a design engineer to create new routing possibilities for a prototype device. The results can mean the difference in finding the root cause of the problem and being early or late to market. This paper describes a variety of methods to open sections of the package circuit board to access and cut I/O traces interwoven throughout the package substrate. It also describes the use of conductive epoxies for connecting traces, vias and solders bumps. Restoring the solder mask with an ultraviolet (UV) light curing conformal coating is also discussed. This method was used to characterize ground sensitivities and simulate inductance effects on the package. The flexibility and fast turnaround time this method enables has already enhanced product performance.

Abstract:
Solder joint reliability under shock loading condition has been a concern over the years especially with constant reductions in the characteristic dimensions of the package and the solder joint. With the impeding transition to lead free solder, attention has moved from temperature cycle failure to mechanical shock failure. A method has been developed that employs a specially designed shock test board (STB) to characterize the solder joint performance as a function of board surface strain. This unique test board can be adapted to a wide range of test and boundary conditions. Using this board, a range of shock inputs is tested to establish correlation of the dynamic response and solder joint damage severity. The effects of package size, board thickness, and solder ball pitch are included in this paper to highlight the critical design factors for solder joint reliability in shock. This method can be used to characterize solder joint performance at the component level, early in development. One can also provide board strain based design limits guide system design and prevent late discovery of solder joint issues. Modal analysis based finite element models have been used to supplement understanding of the board response. The model demonstrates good correlation of the strain on the board and the stresses developed in the solder joint. The modeling data also suggested that the maximum principal stress at the solder joint face is a good failure criterion as it maps well with the actual failure locus found.
