Abstract:
PowerPC and high-performance computers (HPC) are important resources for computing in the ATLAS experiment. The future LHC data processing will require more resources than Grid computing, currently using approximately 100,000 cores at well over 100 sites, can provide. Supercomputers are extremely powerful as they utilize hundreds of thousands of CPUs joined together. However, their architectures have different instruction sets. ATLAS binary software distributions for x86 chipsets do not fit these architectures, as emulation of these chipsets results in huge performance loss. This paper describes the methodology of ATLAS software installation from source code on supercomputers. The installation procedure includes downloading the ATLAS simulation release code with 0.7 million C++ and Python lines as well as the source code of more than 50 external packages, such as ROOT and Geant4, followed by compilation, and rigorous unit and integration testing. The presentation reports the application of this procedure at Titan HPC and Summit PowerPC at Oak Ridge Computing Facility (OLCF).

Abstract:
In the installation process of large-scale external cladding, the labor intensity is high, and it is dangerous and hard to guarantee good construction quality. In view of these issues, this study designs a construction robot for external cladding installation, as a better solution. First, the advantages and disadvantages of the current building external cladding hanging process are discussed. The components, suitable for automatic installation, are selected to develop an automatic installation process for the building external cladding. According to the process steps and installation action flow, the installation robot is first adjusted. After the design of a step-by-step workflow of positioning and installation, a robot with a six-degree-of-freedom string-mixing mechanism is designed. Finally, a prototype of the proposed external cladding installation robot is developed, and the system is experimentally verified under simulation conditions and real operation. The test results show that the external cladding installation robot system has a strong theoretical basis. The series-parallel hybrid six-degree-of-freedom structure is reasonable, design wise. It helps to complete the automatic installation of the building external cladding and improve the automation level of large-scale plate installations.

Abstract:
Most of the issues regarding power supply occurs due to transmission of power through long distances over diverse and unsuitable landscapes. A solar power plant, if installed within the vicinity of the diverse recipient areas, cuts short the transmission related problems by great numbers and acts like an absolute boon to hilly terrains like Sikkim. The study presented here investigates the land suitability for medium-scale solar power installations in Sikkim by using open source software - Quantum-Geographic Information System (Q-GIS) combined with Multi-criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques. Six exclusion criteria are identified to avoid unsuitable areas for plant installation. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to rank the available areas according to their suitability, which have been further presented in a technology-aided suitability map. Such a study greatly reduces the feasibility related issues for investors in such projects to visit every site available for construction of the plant, saving time and money.

Abstract:
This master thesis analyses and investigates how to speed up the deployment of a suite of services to a Platform as a Service. The project use IBM’s Cloud Pak for Applications together with Red Hats OpenShift to provide insights on important factors that influences the deployment process. In this thesis, a modification was done on the installer such that the deployment instructions were sent in parallel instead of sequentially. Except for the parallel suggestion, this thesis also investigates different options on how constraints could be applied to the CPU and what the consequences are. At the end of this report, the reader will also see how the deployment times are affected by cluster scaling. An implementation of the parallel deployment showed that the installation time of Cloud Pak for Applications could be decreased. It was also shown that the CPU was not utilized fully and that there exists significant CPU saturation during the deployment. The evaluation of the scaling analysis showed that, in regards of this thesis, it is more beneficial both timewise and cost-wise to scale horizontally rather than vertically.

Abstract:
As cyber attacks are an ever-increasing threat to many organizations, the need for controlled environments where cyber security defenses can be tested against real-world attacks is increasing. These environments, called cyber ranges, exist across the world for both military and academic purposes of various scales. As the function of a cyber range involves having a set of computers, virtual or physical, that can be configured to replicate a corporate network or an industrial control system, having an automated method of configuring these can streamline the process of performing different exercises. This thesis aims to provide a proof of concept of how the installation of software with known vulnerabilities can be performed and examines if the software is vulnerable directly after installation. The Cyber Range And Training Environment (CRATE) developed by the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) is used as a testbed for the installations and FOI-provided tools are used for launching automated attacks against the installed software. The results show that installations can be performed without Internet access and with minimal network traffic being generated and that our solution can rewrite existing software packages from the package manager Chocolatey to work with an on-premises repository with an 85% success rate. It is also shown that very few publicly available exploits succeed without any manual configuration of either the exploit or the targeted software. Our work contributes to making it easier to set up environments where cyber security research and training can be conducted by simplifying the process of installing vulnerable applications.

Newcomb, Christopher. "Lessons Learned from an afloat installation of an ashore command and control system." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/2117.

Full text
Abstract:
The installation process for afloat systems is very stringent. This rigor is necessary to ensure the Warfighters can fully utilize the functionality provided by information technology (IT) aboard a ship, especially when underway -- removed from most technical support and assistance. However, this rigor also increases the difficulty of executing an afloat installation. The purpose of this thesis is to document the lessons learned from the installation of the Ocean Surveillance Information System (OSIS) Evolutionary Development (OED) on board the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19). OED is an ashore multi-level secure (MLS) command and control and intelligence (C2I) computer system that is fielded at the Joint Intelligence Centers and Joint Analysis Centers. The MLS aspect of OED allows the operator to view and add value to data from multiple security domains on one workstation. In the space, weight, and power (SWAP) constrained environment of a ship, this technology is very advantageous. Since OED is an ashore system, this afloat installation presented a number of challenges and a unique perspective into the installation process. This thesis documents these challenges, how they were overcome and provides future installers recommendations to improve the planning of future afloat installations.

Isaia, Philippos. "Improving the performance of software-defined networks using dynamic flow installation and management techniques." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2018. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/33329.

Abstract:
As computer networks evolve, they become more complex, introducing several challenges in the areas of performance and management. Such problems can lead to stagnation in network innovation. Software Defined Networks (SDN) framework could be one of the best candidates for improving and revolutionising networking by giving the full control to the network administrators to implement new management and performance optimisation techniques. This thesis examines performance issues faced in SDN due to the introduction of the SDN Controller. These issues include the extra delay due to the round-trip time between the switch and the controller as well as the fact that some packets arrive at the destination out-of-order. We propose a novel dynamic flow installation and management algorithm (OFPE) using the SDN protocol OpenFlow, which preserves the controller to a non-overloaded CPU state and allow it to dynamically add and adjust flow table rules to reduce packet delay and out-of-order packets. In addition, we propose OFPEX, an extension to OFPE algorithm that includes techniques for managing multi-switch environments as well as methods that make use of the packets interarrival time in categorising and serving packet flows. Such techniques allow topology awareness, helping the controller to install flow table rules in such a way to form optimal routes for high priority flows thus increasing network performance. For the performance evaluation of the proposed algorithms, both hardware testbed as well as emulation experiments have been conducted. The performance results indicate that OFPE algorithm achieves a significant enhancement in performance in the form of reduced delay by up to 92.56% (depending on the scenario), reduced packet loss by up to 55.32% and reduced out-of-order packets by up to 69.44%. Furthermore, we propose a novel placement algorithm for distributed Mininet implementations which uses weights in order to distribute the experiment components to the appropriately distributed machines. The proposed algorithm uses static code analysis in order to examine the experimental code as well as it measures the capabilities of physical components in order to create a weights table which is then used to distribute the experiment components properly. The performance results of the proposed algorithm evaluation indicated reductions in delay and packet loss of up to 65.51% and 86.35% respectively, as well as a decrease in the standard deviation of CPU usage by up to 88.63%. These results indicate that the proposed algorithm distributes the experiment components evenly across the available resources. Finally, we propose a series of Benchmarking tests that can be used to rate all the available SDN experimental platforms. These tests allow the selection of the appropriate experimental platform according to the scenario needs as well as they indicate the resources needed by each platform.

Abstract:

Nocera, Tomas. "Assessing the Long-term Impacts of White-nose Syndrome on Bat Communities Using Acoustic Surveys at Fort Drum Military Installation." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/95937.

Full text
Abstract:
With declines in abundance and changing distribution of White-nose Syndrome (WNS)-affected bat species, increased reliance on acoustic monitoring is now the new "normal". As such, the ability to accurately identify individual bat species with acoustic identification programs has become increasingly important. Additionally, how bat distribution and habitat associations have changed at the local to sub-landscape scale in the post WNS environment is important to understand. The significance of these changes, relative to bat activity, may be based on the species-specific susceptibility to WNS. We used data collected from Fort Drum Military Installation, New York from the summers of 2003-2017 to analyze the accuracy of acoustic software programs, and assess the changes in relative bat activity, occupancy, and distribution induced by WNS. Our results indicate that continued acoustic monitoring of bat species, such as the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) in the Northeast, to assess ongoing temporal and spatial changes, habitat associations, and as a guide to direct future mist-netting should rely more on relative activity as the metric of choice. Furthermore, the continuous spread of WNS across North America will have strong negative effects on bat populations and communities, this study points to how individual species (both impacted and non-impacted) will respond to WNS. We believe that our results can help users choose automated software and MLE thresholds more appropriate for their needs to accurately address potential changes in communities of bat species due to impacts of WNS or other factors.

Abstract:
Many different message-oriented middlewares (MOM) exist today on the market. With different underlying designs, purposes and features, it is not easy to make the right choice of MOM for your system. The IT company Nordicstation is in such a situation where they need to make a choice of MOM. They currently own a system called Sharelock which generates reports about violations of financial assets trad- ing. They wish to make the process of generating a report more asynchronous by using a MOM and they have a couple of requirements. This thesis was carried out with the purpose of finding the most suitable products for the system in mind, compare their features, performance, licenses and ease-of- use. This was accomplished by analysing their installation process, monitoring in- terfaces, documentation on their websites and performance in a simple throughput test. The results showed that RabbitMQ was the strongest candidate. It had good per- formance, an attractive web interface for monitoring, an easy installation and it also offered commercial support. Apache Artemis was also found to be an attractive choice but it did not have a web interface which made it hard to manage the system.

Abstract:
Today many companies aims to have their systems automated. Tieto works in a delivery system that is not fully automated, and they wish for it to be improved. They wish to improve this delivery system, as it’s not automated. This work aims to analyze the delivery system to find possi- ble solutions. The delivery system is being used to deliver services to Telia and developed modules are installed for system tests, acceptance tests and in production. The analysis is done by observing and interviewing users on Tieto. If a solution can be found the solutions will be found mainly within automation, but also in level of risk and usability. A solu- tion will be implemented and aiming for practical results that can be used in the delivery system. The analysis has resulted in prioritizing automa- tion of installations descriptions for modules, in the form of installation reports. After the automation of the installation reports, a prototype was implemented for automation of the installation guide. It is being used for getting an overview of everything that will be installed in production. A generation of installation reports has resulted in an automated solution that has been deployed in the delivery system. The deployment has shown a great time gain, a lower level of risk and an increased usability. The automation of the installation guide has resulted in a prototype that generates a big part of the content automatically. An analysis of the de- livery system shows that it contains both advantages and disadvantages in the system/process. It also contains a few missing parts. Many sugges- tions has been reported to improve the delivery system.
