Abstract:
We present metacodes, a new concept to guide grounded theory (GT) research in software engineering. Metacodes are high level codes that can help software engineering researchers guide the data coding process. Metacodes are constructed in the course of analyzing software engineering papers that use grounded theory as a research methodology. We performed a high level analysis to discover common themes in such papers and discovered that GT had been applied primarily in three software engineering disciplines: agile development processes, geographically distributed software development, and requirements engineering. For each category, we collected and analyzed all grounded theory codes and created, following a GT analysis process, what we call metacodes that can be used to drive further theory building. This paper surveys the use of grounded theory in software engineering and presents an overview of successes and challenges of applying this research methodology.

This paper demonstrates the potential usefulness of the NVivo7 software for developing grounded theory through semantic analysis and for making grounded theory more accessible to students and researchers. Use of qualitative data analysis software early in the research process can impact research design, including the creation of interview protocols and survey instruments. It can also be useful later in the process for content and discourse analyses. NVivo is a software program designed to facilitate coding and analysis of qualitative data; it includes "query" functions, which are specific searches that the software can perform on data.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Self-assignment, a self-directed method of task allocation in which teams and individuals assign and choose work for themselves, is considered one of the hallmark practices of empowered, self-organizing agile teams. Despite all the benefits it promises, agile software teams do not practice it as regularly as other agile practices such as iteration planning and daily stand-ups, indicating that it is likely not an easy and straighforward practice. There has been very little empirical research on self-assignment. This Grounded Theory study explores how self-assignment works in agile projects. We collected data through interviews with 42 participants representing 28 agile teams from 23 software companies and supplemented these interviews with observations. Based on rigorous application of Grounded Theory analysis procedures such as open, axial, and selective coding, we present a comprehensive grounded theory of making self-assignment work that explains the (a) context and (b) causal conditions that give rise to the need for self-assignment, (c) a set of facilitating conditions that mediate how self-assignment may be enabled, (d) a set of constraining conditions that mediate how self-assignment may be constrained and which are overcome by a set of (e) strategies applied by agile teams, which in turn result in (f) a set of consequences, all in an attempt to make the central phenomenon, self-assignment, work. The findings of this study will help agile practitioners and companies understand different aspects of self-assignment and practice it with confidence regularly as a valuable practice. Additionally, it will help teams already practicing self-assignment to apply strategies to overcome the challenges they face on an everyday basis.

Abstract:
Requirement change management (RCM) is a critical activity during software development because poor RCM results in occurrence of defects, thereby resulting in software failure. To achieve RCM, efficient impact analysis is mandatory. A common repository is a good approach to maintain changed requirements, reusing and reducing effort. Thus, a better approach is needed to tailor knowledge for better change management of requirements and architecture during global software development (GSD).The objective of this research is to introduce an innovative approach for handling requirements and architecture changes simultaneously during global software development. The approach makes use of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and agile practices. Agile practices make our approach iterative, whereas CBR stores requirements and makes them reusable. Twin Peaks is our base model, meaning that requirements and architecture are handled simultaneously. For this research, grounded theory has been applied; similarly, interviews from domain experts were conducted. Interview and literature transcripts formed the basis of data collection in grounded theory. Physical saturation of theory has been achieved through a published case study and developed tool. Expert reviews and statistical analysis have been used for evaluation. The proposed approach resulted in effective change management of requirements and architecture simultaneously during global software development.

Abstract:
Qualitative Data Analysis Software is not extensively used in Brazil; also, misconceptions about qualitative research are still common. This study presents the main functions of Qualitative Data Analysis Software or, more properly, CAQDAS - Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software, as it is well known in the academic world. The relationship of CAQDAS with grounded theory is stressed, and so is text coding, as the central operational issue in grounded theory. Vantages and advantages of using software packages are analyzed. However their huge potential for facilitating data storage, manipulation and retrieval, their use is not always necessary or even recommended. As the packages are not neutral concerning theory, the analyst has to decide if and when to use a computer program and, if the package is in order, which one to use. Key words: Data analysis. Computer software. Qualitative research.

Grounded theory is a qualitative research method widely used in social sciences. Using content analysis and CiteSpace visualization software and taking journal articles of China National Knowledge Infrastructure database from 2004 to 2017 as the analysis objects, this paper comprehensively explores the studies using grounded theory in the field of journalism and communication in the Chinese mainland. It shows that the application of grounded theory in the field of journalism and communication had a relatively late start in the Chinese mainland. However, interdisciplinary research obviously prevailed. Researches using grounded theory are not widespread, while the theory has not been fully localized. Financial support from the government has been a great help to researchers, but the researchers outside the academic circles hardly get involved in academic activities.

Abstract:
Grounded theory (GT) is a general research method that provides the efficient generation of theory from data, which are collected by a strong, sound, and fair research method. It is an inductive methodology that systematically collects and analyzes data for developing theory on human behavior in social welfare perspectives. It is considered as one of the most popular qualitative research methodologies in the world. It is originally developed by two American sociologists Barney Galland Glaser and Anselm Leonard Strauss in 1967 through the publication of their revolutionary book The Discovery of Grounded Theory. It emphasizes the importance of developing an understanding of human behavior through a process of discovery. Grounded theory has originated in sociology, and at present it has become a key methodological setting in a wide range of other disciplines, such as in nursing, physiotherapy, healthcare, education, anthropology, psychology, management, information systems, software engineering, etc. It is useful both for expert and novice researchers to generate new explanatory theories. This article tries to discuss grounded theory methodology through the discussion of its origin and development, basic principles, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and its usefulness in social science researches for qualitative analysis.

Abstract:
For successful project outcomes to organizations and clients alike, project managers (PMs) need to make ethical decisions and yet balance the interests of all stakeholders involved. Hence, honest communication among project stakeholders is essential as a countermeasure to this paradox. Honesty is one of the core ethical values propagated by the Project Management Institute (PMI), USA. Our study aimed to gain an endogenous perspective on honesty vis-à-vis its reification by PMI in its effect on software project performance. Empirical data were collected through in-depth interviews from 83 Indian PMs in one of the prominent Indian software consulting organizations. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data obtained. Our results validate the importance of honesty on software project performance, the need for trust among stakeholders in maintaining honesty, importance of Indian culture in understanding honesty and ensuing ethical challenges faced by PMs. Our results bear implications to extant research on honesty in projects with specific reference to the Indian software context. They are important for PMI professionals as they provide a culture-specific perspective to honesty and the scope for ideation on how to inculcate and sustain honesty in project management in India.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate systematic application of grounded theory to understand antecedents, moderators and consequences of family-to-work enrichment in India. The paper throws light on the key tenets of grounded theory research and explains its use as a rigorous method for management research. Design/methodology/approach – “Paradigm model” of grounded theory was used for data analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews of 24, middle managers in India. Interviewees were from various industries like IT, software, insurance, banking, telecom, media, consulting and fast moving consumer goods. Findings – This study identifies family resources as an antecedent of family-to-work enrichment. Community resources and work-role salience facilitate positive relation between family resources and family-to-work enrichment. Further, psychological capital has been identified as a consequence. Strategies adopted by the professionals to enhance their family-to-work enrichment have also been explored. Research limitations/implications – This study provides a holistic understanding of family-to-work enrichment, an under researched phenomenon by exploring relation between work, family and community resources. Practical implications – The integration of three domains, i.e. work, family and community provide insights to managers and policy makers about the importance of family and community in the organizations. Originality/value – This study fulfills the need to explore positive side of work-family interface especially, in emerging economies like India. Moreover, it is the first attempt to study the work-family-community interface from a grounded theory approach in the Indian context and probably one of the first few in the literature.

Abstract:
The successful implementation of Software Process Improvement (SPI) depends not only on the abilities of practitioners to identify processes modifications that may help to increase organizations capabilities to develop software, but also abilities to overcome barriers that can jeopardize the organizational change process provoked by SPI initiatives. The literature reports show that SPI practitioners must have experienced skills to overcome common social-cultural factors that pose as critical barriers for successfully implementing SPI. Nevertheless, there is no consensus in the area about what the critical success factors are for conducting SPI implementation initiatives. This work presents a study based on Grounded Theory methodology to acquire knowledge about SPI critical success factors. The main product of this study is a theoretical knowledge framework consisting of a set of inter-related categories grounded on a set of propositions that explains the phenomenon associated to the success of SPI implementation initiatives.

Abstract:
Purpose In this paper, the authors consider how qualitative research techniques that are used in applied psychology to understand a person’s feelings and needs provides a means to elicit their security needs. Design/methodology/approach Recognizing that the codes uncovered during a grounded theory analysis of semi-structured interview data can be interpreted as policy attributes, the paper develops a grounded theory-based methodology that can be extended to elicit attribute-based access control style policies. In this methodology, user-participants are interviewed and machine learning is used to build a Bayesian network-based policy from the subsequent (grounded theory) analysis of the interview data. Findings Using a running example – based on a social psychology research study centered around photograph sharing – the paper demonstrates that in principle, qualitative research techniques can be used in a systematic manner to elicit security policy requirements. Originality/value While in principle qualitative research techniques can be used to elicit user requirements, the originality of this paper is a systematic methodology and its mapping into what is actionable, that is, providing a means to generate a machine-interpretable security policy at the end of the elicitation process.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify and explain the role of individuals’ awareness and motivation in facilitating knowledge sharing (KS) in the real world of practice, as well as to establish areas of convergence between theory and practice that can be of use to both academics and practitioners involved in knowledge intensive organisations. Design/methodology/approach This study used Grounded Theory (GT) as an inductive methodology to collect, analyse and interpret data from multiple case-studies. 44 participants from Chinese software organisations were selected on the basis of their role in SW design and development and were interviewed using a semi-structured interview script. The data analysis followed a Straussian approach to coding, which consists of open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The analysis focused on the impact of individuals’ awareness and motivation to share knowledge. Findings The findings of this research show that the motivation for KS – a time consuming and demanding activity – is indeed related to awareness by managers and developers of the benefits of KS in their professional practice. Practitioners shared their experiences and tacit knowledge with others, partly because it was required by their companies, but also because they have a sound awareness of the need to share knowledge both inside and outside their organisations. Research limitations/implications As a typical social science inductive study, this research is bounded by the context in which the theory proposed emerged from. Further research should be conducted into a richer variety of organisational and national contexts, as suggested by good theoretical sampling practice, which could provide further insights or contrasts. Originality/value Despite a number of theoretical propositions found in the literature, there is a clear lack of implementation strategies and models that explain the role of awareness and motivation in facilitating KS in the world of practice. This issue of applicability of theoretical propositions is now recognised as one of the fundamental key issues in KS. This study provides new and practice grounded insights in this area and is of interest to both practitioners and theoreticians as it explains and bridges the individuals’ awareness and motivation for tacit KS.

Abstract:
Deep and insightful interactions with the data are a prerequisite for qualitative data interpretation, in particular, in the generation of grounded theory. The researcher must also employ imaginative insight as they attempt to make sense of the data and generate understanding and theory. Design research is also dependent upon the researchers’ creative interpretation of the data. To support the research process, designers surround themselves with data, both as a source of empirical information and inspiration to trigger imaginative insights. Constant interaction with the data is integral to design research methodology. This article explores a design researchers approach to qualitative data analysis, in particular, the use of traditional tools such as colored pens, paper, and sticky notes with the CAQDAS software, NVivo for analysis, and the associated implications for rigor. A design researchers’ approach which is grounded in a practice which maximizes researcher data interaction in a variety of learning modalities ensures the analysis process is rigorous and productive. Reflection on the authors’ research analysis process, combined with consultation with the literature, would suggest digital analysis software packages such as NVivo do not fully scaffold the analysis process. They do, however, provide excellent data management and retrieval facilities that support analysis and write-up. This research finds that coding using traditional tools such as colored pens, paper, and sticky notes supporting data analysis combined with digital software packages such as NVivo supporting data management offer a valid and tested analysis method for grounded theory generation. Insights developed from exploring a design researchers approach may benefit researchers from other disciplines engaged in qualitative analysis.

Abstract:
With the embedding of internet technology, the entrepreneurial model has been gradually developing from traditional single linear channel into network platform with symbiotic multi-platform. Platform leadership is the most important part of the new one and has been caught greatest attention. This paper put forward a new conception of network entrepreneurial platform leadership innovatively. By the integrated use of the Classical Grounded theory, the Procedure Grounded Theory and the Construction Grounded Theory, it adopted the normative research process of open coding, axial coding and selective coding to refine 34 concept—multi-node interactive, cross-level coupling relationship, etc, and formed 11 fundamental categories which include platform leadership power, network organization entrepreneurial mode, etc. Then, we analyzed the interactions between categories, based on which, a double-level and three-type-characteristics model were ultimately built. The study was finished by both two methods of statistical software and manual operation. In order to improve the reliability and validity of the study, it invited another coder to test the category subordination collaboratively, and used matched group to test the theoretical saturation.

Abstract:
This paper outlines a triangulation approach to constructing theory that was employed in a case study research project. Analysis of evidence is one of the least developed and most difficult aspects of conducting case studies. This tends to be seen as a drawback by critics of the case study method. To overcome this obstacle, we bring in methods such as data saturation and analysis triangulation to strengthen our ability to interpret the findings. Meanwhile, the structure is systematically and logically presented with the assistance of analysis software.

Abstract:
The global open source movement has provided software users with more choices, lower software acquisition cost, more flexible software customization, and possibly higher quality software product. Although the development of open source software is dynamic and it encourages innovations, the process can be chaotic and involve members around the globe. An Open Source Software Development (OSSD) process model to enhance the survivability of OSSD projects is needed. This research uses the grounded theory approach to derive a Phase-Role-Skill-Responsibility (PRSR) OSSD process model. The three OSSD process phases -- Launch Stage, Before the First Release, and Between Releases -- address the characteristics of the OSSD process as well as factors that influence the OSSD process. In the PRSR model, different roles/actors are required to have different skills and responsibilities corresponding to each of the three OSSD process phases. This qualitative research contributes to the software development literature as well as open source practice.

Abstract:
The current construction industry, which has a high accident rate and declining labor productivity, urgently requires efficient and practical management policies. Research has shown that social norms within informal groups have considerable influence on construction workers, while studies on informal groups of construction workers (IGCWs) have been scarce. Current theories of informal groups have not been analyzed in combination with construction industry characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework of IGCWs, including definitions, types, characteristics, causes, and functions. First, on the basis of existing theoretical research of informal groups, two semistructured interviews were designed to collect data from managers and workers. Then, a qualitative approach using grounded theory with NVivo software was employed to code the interview information, and 25 subcategories were obtained: 5 types, 10 characteristics, 4 causes, and 6 functions of IGCWs. Eventually, a conceptual model was established to explain the definition of IGCWs according to the interview data and subcategories identified. This study not only contributes to improving behavioral science theory, especially group behavior theory and human relations theory, but also contributes to constructing an informal group theory of the construction industry. In practical terms, the targeted identification of IGCWs is useful for managers in taking measures to more effectively manage construction workers.

Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the emergence of new gig working routes in the legal industry. Drawing on the nascent concept of ‘career crafting’, I crafted a constructivist grounded theory of ‘Craft My Own Way’ from the experiences of 15 lawyers. Participants’ experiences reflect agentic and emergent perspectives as part of inter-connected transition processes. A main finding of this study is that, whilst seeking change, participants experienced a paradoxically conflicting and synergistic relationship with their pasts. The findings offer a discussion framework for career professionals to help clients reconcile tensions by considering ‘craft’ as a theoretical lens to frame career transitions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the appraisal process of capital investment decisions. The study adopted the grounded theory approach for the exploration of the objective. In the first stage, 48 in-depth interviews were conducted from finance executives of PSX listed companies. After transcription of all of the interviews, NVIVO software was used for analysis. Theoretical sampling was used in this study. Initially, 35 concepts and 19 categories were obtained from the initial coding of 48 cases. In the next stage, using focused coding, 19 initial categories into 09 categories were classified. These 09 categories represent each stage of the appraisal process of capital investment. These stages are Idea generation, Strategic planning, Analysis, Risk Evaluation, Selection, Mode of finance, Implementation, Monitoring and control, and Post-audit. The development of appraisal process stages is the novelty of this study and key theoretical contribution. Findings provide an in-depth understanding of the systematic way that industry appraises capital investments. This study opens grounds for new knowledge for academia, adds to relevant literature and reduces the gap between the corporate world and academia.

Abstract:
Agile software development generally refers to popular practices that are supposed to adhere to the Agile Manifesto with its values and principles. Empirical studies on agile software development have mainly focused on organizational adoption and impacts of agile practices. Furthermore, the literature on agile software development has mostly centered on small, co-located projects. However, agility is needed for software development projects of varied sizes in different organizations across industries. The general nature of agile values and principles and the procedure-driven nature of specific agile methods make it difficult for organizations to determine what they can do to effectively facilitate agility in their software development process. To bridge that literature gap and based on an evolved grounded-theory approach, this study identifies nine agility facilitators and their corresponding dimensions that extend beyond small, co-located projects to software projects of any size and distribution. These agility facilitators are further grouped into two categories: organizational foundation and project processes. In addition, the authors identify four dimensions of agility. The authors propose a framework that describes the organizational mechanisms through which the nine categories of facilitators lead to software development agility.
