Abstract:
Context. Global Software Development (GSD) or Global Software Engineering (GSE) is defined as the plan of action in which the software development is performed under various boundaries, such as temporal, political, organizational and cultural [1,2] . The projects developed in globally distributed environment are containing more risks than projects developed in collocated environment because of different challenges such as temporal, geographical and socio-cultural distances [67]. In this thesis communication risks have been discussed along with their causes and effects that hinder the effectiveness of GSD projects. Moreover mitigation practices to resolve communication risks and their negative impacts are also discussed. Objectives. The study describes the identification of communication risks, their causes, effects and the practices to mitigate the risks from both literature and industrial perspectives. Some recommendations has also been discussed on the basis of these resulted communication risks and their mitigation practices. Methods. Detailed systematic literature review in order to collect the data from relevant empirical studies with respect to our scope has been conducted in the first phase. Studies were selected from various Electronic Data Sources (EDS) such as IEEE Xplore (IEEE), ACM Digital Library (ACM), Inspec (IS), Compendex (CD), ISI Web of Science (WoS), Cite Seer (CS), Google Scholar (GS), Science Direct (SD), Springer Link (SL), Wiley Inter Science (WIS), and Business Source Premier (BSP). In second phase 22 industrial interviews were conducted from 13 different multinational organizations. In third phase data analysis has been made based on the analysis of ground theory. On the basis of the codes of grounded theory, comparative analysis has been performed between literature and industrial settings. At the end of the thesis some recommendations has been provided in order to resolve communication risks in GSD. Results. As a result of systematic literature review 44 risks, 44 causes, 38 effects and 63 practices have been identified in GSD with respect to communication. 27 risks, 22 causes, 19 effects and 39 mitigation practices were identified from the industrial interviews. These risks, causes, effects and practices are not only described in this thesis but also mapped in relation to each other. At the end in comparative analysis the combined risks, causes, effects and practices were identified in tabular form. In total 47 risks, 45 causes, 39 effects and 65 mitigation practices were identified through this work. Conclusions. Communication plays a fundamental role in achieving the best practices in Global Software Engineering. This study points out the salient risks and limitations that hamper the process of smooth communication in geographically dispersed teams. The causes and effects of the mentioned risks are discussed in detail and a set of recommendations is provided to cope with those risks and to minimize their effect. The resultant set of recommendations is based on the best suitable practices which shall be followed by globally distributed organizations to achieve a fully communicated environment just like an in-house development setting.

Many startup organizations face a dilemma as they scale up and their systems grow more complex. This dilemma is between the speed of releases i.e. agility and the scalability of their systems, reflected in the performance, stability and maintainability of their systems as they become larger. A startup is typically very nimble and releases new features and updates to its product very quickly. However, as a startup grows bigger the frequency of releases typically tends to go down. A similar phenomenon is observed in case of incumbent organizations, those that are old, large and complex, and that already have systems at scale; they have systems that perform at scale, and are stable and maintainable, but the pace of development is slow, and it find it hard to speed up their release cycles. Through the study of organizations that have successfully reconciled the required and coveted scalability along with speed as these organizations moved from being small startups to become larger, this study demonstrates that speed vs scale is a dilemma for startups that can be reconciled as they scale up, because there are a set of practices such as modular architecture choices, minimizing work in progress by adopting frequent deployments, automation in testing and utilizing innovative management techniques, which can enable startup organizations to scale up their system and maintain high speed. Although the study of incumbents as they try to speed up while maintaining their scalability is outside the scope of this work, this study also presents a hypothesis for further investigation that it may also be possible for incumbent organizations to speed up at large scale, by embracing these practices.

Agile methodologies have become the standard approach to software development. The most popular and used one is Scrum. Scrum is a very simple and flexible framework that respond to unpredictability in a really effective way. However, his implementation must be correct, and since Scrum tells you what to do but not how to do it, this is not trivial. In this thesis I will describe the Scrum Framework, how to implement it and a tool that can help to do this. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is called Scrum. Here I will introduce the framework itself, its key concepts and its components. In Scrum there are three components: roles, meetings and artifacts. Each of these is meant to accomplish a series of specific tasks. After describing the “what to do”, in the second part, Best Practices, I will focus on the “how to do it”. For example, how to decide which items should be included in the next sprint, how to estimate tasks, and how should the team workspace be. Finally, in the third part called Tools, I will introduce Visual Studio Online, a cloud service from Microsoft that offers Git and TFVC repositories and the opportunity to manage projects with Scrum. == Versione italiana: I metodi Agile sono diventati l’approccio standard per lo sviluppo di software. Il più famoso ed utilizzato è Scrum. Scrum è un framework molto semplice e flessibile che risponde ai cambiamenti in una maniera molto efficace. La sua implementazione deve però essere corretta, e visto che Scrum ci dice cosa fare ma non come farlo, questo non risulta essere immediato. In questa tesi descriverò Scrum, come implementarlo ed uno strumento che ci può aiutare a farlo. La tesi è divisa in tre parti. La prima parte è chiamata Scrum. Qui introdurrò il framework, i suoi concetti base e le sue componenti. In Scrum ci sono tre componenti: i ruoli, i meeting e gli artifact. Ognuno di questi è studiato per svolgere una serie di compiti specifici. Dopo aver descritto il “cosa fare”, nella seconda parte, Best Practices, mi concentrerò sul “come farlo”. Abstract:
Requirements Engineering has two main directions, Bespoke (product developed for one customer) and Market-Driven (several potential customers for the same product). These two are in some ways very much alike but in some aspects very different. Over the last couple of years the software development industry has tended to shift more and more to Market-Driven Requirements Engineering. This has brought attention to the challenges facing a Market-Driven development organization, without focusing on the actual shift from Bespoke development. Based on the differences and similarities between Bespoke and Market-Driven Requirements Engineering, this thesis presents a framework for shifting from the former to the latter. The framework (BESMART) involves three steps. Firstly, the organization assesses their potential to become more Market-Driven. Secondly they assess their current way of working to identify which areas that may need to be improved. Finally, BESMART provides multiple suggestions that address the identified improvement areas. The organization is then able to choose the one that best suits their needs. This also lets the organization choose a solution that they find feasible. The framework was used at a case organization during its development. This way it was ensured that the theoretical framework could actually be used in a real world setting. The practical use of BESMART resulted in some refinements aimed at making it more applicable in industry. Once the framework had been applied, it was evaluated by representatives from the case organization. The industry evaluation resulted in some improvement suggestions but showed that the framework was both useful and usable and provided an improvement plan that seemed promising enough to pilot in the organization.

In a world where technology is advancing at a very rapid pace, global competition has significantly increased, and this is putting pressure on software companies to produce quality software. It has therefore become critically important to manage well the implementation of software engineering projects by employing effective methods that ensure the best product is produced. The most popular software project implementation methodologies are the Traditional methods and Agile methods. This research explored these two methodologies by comparing the strength and weakness of both approaches. The research was conducted using a constructionist epistemology with a critical inquiry using the grounded theory methodology, applying both quantitative and qualitative methods to the case studies. Findings were collected through participant observation using a designed questionnaire targeting a selected sample of the study population. This sample of the population consisted of Ecommerce organizations in the Western Cape province of South Africa to establish which of the Traditional or Agile methods would best lead to the successful implementation of Ecommerce software engineering projects. The research results showed that the Agile methodology was the preferred and recommended approach. Very few participants of the research supported the Traditional approach to still be considered and used for projects with well-known end goals. An Ecommerce website prototype for a local Cape Town business was constructed as following the Agile approach to measure and validate the findings of the research. The prototype was built successfully from conception to the final delivery product and on time confirming the Agile approach as best for Ecommerce software development. In conclusion, the Agile methodology is the choice approach based on reviewed literature, the research results, and the prototype construction. These results will help in critical decision making regarding an appropriate development methodology to follow for the Ecommerce industry in the Western Cape.

A indústria de jogos eletrônicos está entrando em uma nova era, na qual a tecnologia e a criatividade fundem-se, produzindo alguns dos mais estonteantes entretenimentos do Séc. XXI. Essa indústria, que já em 2003 ultrapassou o faturamento do cinema, tendo um rendimento anual de bilhões de dólares, emerge como uma das mais poderosas, excitantes e influentes no mundo das artes. Mesmo com toda essa pujança e rentabilidade, muitos dos relatos sobre projetos de jogos (doravante denominados postmortems) mostram que a produção desses softwares não é uma tarefa simples, estando ainda distante de um processo de trabalho saudável e sinergético. Entretanto, ao analisarmos mais atentamente os postmortems disponíveis nos sites especializados em jogos eletrônicos, pode-se constatar a adoção de várias práticas de engenharia de software, em especial, práticas ágeis de desenvolvimento. Assim, é possível melhorar o processo de desenvolvimento de jogos eletrônicos através da aplicação dessas práticas? Que práticas são mais adequadas para este domínio? Que impacto sua adoção tem sobre propriedades subjetivas como a criatividade e a diversão? O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o impacto da aplicação de práticas ágeis no processo de desenvolvimento de jogos eletrônicos, analisando os principais problemas da indústria de jogos, levantando as boas práticas já adotadas e propondo um conjunto de práticas ágeis que contemplem as características do processo de desenvolvimento de jogos. Finalmente, com o intuito de obter resultados experimentais da aplicação dessas práticas, será realizado um estudo de caso, possibilitando avaliar seus efeitos sobre o processo de trabalho.
The industry of electronic games is entering a new age, in which technology and creativity are fused, producing some of the most stunning entertainment of the 21st Century. This industry, which already in 2003 exceeded the cinema invoice, having an annual yield of billions of dollars, emerges nowadays as one of the most powerful, exciting and influential in the world of arts. Despite of all this exuberance and profitability, many reports about games projects show that the production of these softwares is not a simple task, surrounded by common problems and being still distant of having a healthy and synergetic work process. However, despite of problems found, game postmortems claims to use software engineering best practices in the game development process, specially, agile practices. Thus, is possible to improve the electronic game development process using agile practices? What practices are most appropriate for game development? What is the impact of such practices on subjective properties as creativity and fun? The aim of this work is to study the effects of agile practices on electronic game development process, analysing the most important problems in the game industry, surveying best practices and proposing a set of agile practices focused on the game development issues. Finally, a case study will be presented.

Abstract:
Low health literacy is a problem the U.S. faces and, like health care itself, is a complex issue stemming from patient demographics and the healthcare providers being very diverse. Tools have been developed to mitigate the risks of low health literacy, however, without formal policy. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore and compare commonalities in health literacy best practices of organizations that are recognized as leaders in health literacy and are addressing low health literacy in their communities. By comparing the organizations' abilities to implement standards of plain language and health literacy tools/guidelines, best practice and policy recommendations could be made to various organizations regardless of level (local, state, federal, or nonprofit). The theoretical framework was based on the Evans and Stoddart framework of determinants of health and the health behavioral theories. The conceptual framework was based on health literacy best practices and policy. The research questions focused on how organizations implement health literacy tools/guidelines, the impact of health literacy best practices on policy development and addressing health literacy through formal policy. The qualitative multiple case study used open-ended interview questions via telephone conferencing, with 13 participants from health literacy organizations. The analysis was done by coding and bracketing the responses manually and with NVivo software. Results indicate that health literacy policy development and involvement exists but it is not derived from the health literacy best practices. The implications for positive social change for this study impacts the patient (individual), community, organization, and society through best practices and recommendations for policy development.

Economic and market forces as well as technological progress emerging throughout the last decade signifies the Geographically Distributed Development (GDD) or Global Software Development (GSD) as a software industry norm or necessity that is receiving considerable interest from companies all over the world. This thesis clarifies the terms used in distributed development practice, studies the status, key business drivers and major challenges of GDD or GSD, and then proposes a revised six-force framework to leverage the capabilities of geographically distributed development model. The proposed framework covers both the strategic and tactic aspects of investing and managing a global project team, including Strategic Vision and Management Skills, Organizational Structure and Team Building, Collaborative Technologies, Development Methodology and Software Life-Cycle Management in planning and managing distributed project and leveraging global teams. This thesis uses a case study to validate the challenges and concerns identified and to conclude that many problems in geographically distributed development can be overcome to enable companies to systematically harness the potential of this development model.

Innovation is extremely important for companies to gain and sustain competitive advantage in the modern business environment. Nowadays ability to adapt and evolve is crucial for any company willing to survive. The key to effective adaption and evolvement is innovation. New products are commonly seen as an output of innovation whereas new product development process is considered to be a sub-process of innovation.  The thesis focuses on development of a new product in the company the author has been working for. It aims at assessing the methods that the company is employing to develop new products. The goal is to determine the flaws in the new product development process of the company and the negative effects on performance and output the flaws have.  The thesis describes the generic new product development process, a certain form of which is used by majority of the companies involved in new product development. It contains a narrative literature review of articles documenting research in the field of best practices of new product development. It also reviews studies of critical factors of new product success, which separate the best performing companies from the others.  The thesis uses the best practice research and success factors studies as a reference point to assess the methods and evaluate the process that the company used to develop the product the thesis is focused on. The thesis also describes the market and the competition that the company is facing. In the end it gives a number of recommendations. The company can use the results as guidelines for improvement.

Abstract:

Nurses assume preceptor responsibilities in addition to usual nursing duties and most have minimal pedagogical preparation for the role. However, preceptors influence the competence of new staff through their instruction. The development of self-efficacy is vital to patient outcomes and safety. Using Bandura's (1997) framework of self-efficacy, ten proficient preceptors participated in an action research study that included individual interviews and focus groups related to the research question: What do proficient nurse preceptors report about the development of their preceptor self-efficacy for the purpose of recommending ongoing professional development and best practices within a hospital setting?

Preceptors identified thirteen best practices for ongoing professional development within their hospital. These practices include areas of Instruction, Preceptor Support and Professionalism. The largest number of findings were within Instruction. Preceptors are the first teachers of new hires within hospitals. Effective instruction was predicated upon the existence of role support and inculcation of professionalism within the preceptor culture.

Recommendations for practice include adoption of these best practices into ongoing professional development curricula. A monthly preceptor forum, to facilitate preceptor networking and sharing, is recommended. Future research might examine teaching strategies utilized by preceptors and the timing of these strategies when engaged in precepting. A comparative study using a self-efficacy tool for assessment could be conducted to ascertain whether the preceptor forum was building self-efficacy among the preceptors in comparison to another non-participating group of preceptors.

The integration between the computing world and the physical world in a single system is called Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). CPS systems aim to improve understanding and influence in physical phenomena and environmental behaviors by computing means. The interaction of the computing world with the physical world, through the use of sensors, actuators and network communication often leads to the accomplishment of highly complex and multidisciplinary projects. Project management is a practice that enhances the success probability of a project, monitoring and controlling relevant aspects to the project execution. Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a set of best practices regarding project management which addresses ten knowledge areas aiming to support project managers from any application domain. Although PMBOK proposes a generic approach, some specialized practices for a particular application domain may benefit highly challenging projects. In this context, this research work aims to propose a set of best practices specific for CPS systems development projects. The proposed approach is called CPS-PMBOK (junction of terms cyber-physical systems and project management body of knowledge) and is based on PMBOK\'s three knowledge areas: scope, human resource and stakeholder. CPS-PMBOK includes: \\textit a CPS characterization model which supports the understanding of the system to be developed; and \\textit specializations of these three PMBOK\'s knowledge areas, which provide a whole new process for the project scope management as well as specific improvements of well-known techniques for both the human resource management and the stakeholders management. The goal of CPS-PMBOK is to enhance project effectiveness and CPS quality, embracing both project manager and developers. To evaluate CPS-PMBOK effectiveness and adherence, the practices were presented for project managers and developers in a R\\&D company. The practices: pre-elaborated list of requirements, specialized team division and technical trust showed as more relevant for each respective knowledge area, according to managers. For developers, the review requirements process, cross training and technical trust seems to contribute more for its respective knowledge areas
A integração entre o mundo computacional e o mundo físico em um único sistema é chamada de Sistemas Ciberfísicos (CPS - do inglês \"Cyber-Physical Systems\'\'). Sistemas CPS visam melhorar o entendimento e a influência nos fenômenos físicos por meios computacionais. A interação do mundo computacional com o mundo físico, por meio de sensores, atuadores e redes de comunicação, frequentemente leva à realização de projetos de alta complexidade e multidisciplinares. Gestão de projetos é uma prática que aumenta as chances de sucesso de um projeto, monitorando e controlando aspectos relevantes da realização do projeto. PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) é uma combinação de boas práticas relacionadas à gestão de projetos que trata dez áreas de conhecimento visando auxiliar gerentes de projeto de qualquer área de aplicação. Embora PMBOK proponha uma abordagem genérica, algumas práticas especializadas para determinadas áreas de aplicação particulares podem beneficiar projetos altamente desafiadores. Neste contexto, este projeto de pesquisa visa propor um conjunto de boas práticas para projetos de desenvolvimento de sistemas CPS. Essa abordagem é chamada de CPS-PMBOK (junção dos termos em inglês: cyber-physical systems e project management body of knowledge) e é baseada em três áreas de conhecimento do PMBOK: escopo, recursos humanos e partes interessadas. CPS-PMBOK inclui: (i) um modelo de caracterização de sistemas CPS que auxilia o entendimento do sistema a ser desenvolvido e (ii) especializações dessas três áreas de conhecimento do PMBOK, que fornecem um inteiramente novo processo para a gestão de escopo do projeto assim como melhorias específicas de técnicas conhecidas do PMBOK para os processos de gestão de recursos humanos e de gestão de partes interessadas. O objetivo da CPS-PMBOK é melhorar a eficácia do projeto e a qualidade do sistema CPS desenvolvido, abrangendo tanto o gerente de projeto quanto os desenvolvedores. Para avaliar a efetividade e aderência da CPS-PMBOK, as práticas foram apresentadas para gerentes de projeto e desenvolvedores em uma empresa de P&D. As práticas: listas pré-elaboradas de requisitos, divisão de equipes especializadas e confiança técnica mostraram-se mais relevantes para cada respectiva área do conhecimento, segundo os gerentes. “When in Rome do as the Romans do” – this hundreds years old proverb is still very actual today. Even more, nowadays you don’t even have to go to Rome to feel cultural differences. The communication technology have changed the world economy, thousands of people work now for multinational companies, interacting daily not just with a culture, but possibly with as much as 5 or 6 different ones. Some teams even work in different geographical locations communicating exclusively by electronic means. Today’s managers just have to deal with culture whether they like it or not, but the whole employee-manager relationship may be turned upside down on another side of the globe. So what should we do and what do we do about it? Ho do we manage effectively? These are the questions that this study aims to answer at. The main research objects of this study are rather small software engineering teams and companies that are working in cross-cultural environment, but do have little or no special company policies and other formal ways to manage cultural differences. Yet we found out that managers develop there own understanding of cultural issues and are practicing different methods to deal with them.

The goals with continuous delivery are to reduce the risk, cost, and time of releasing software to the stakeholders and the users. It is a process which can result in reliable releases and reducing errors in the software. Furthermore, there are some best practices to follow when conducting the continuous delivery process, involving version control, and build tools. There are however some obstacles and challenges for organizations when moving to continuous delivery. For example, complex environments, organizational problems, and lack of automated test cases. This master thesis investigates continuous delivery through a literature review, a multiple-case study, and fieldwork. The result can either be used by software engineers and organizations who are new to the continuous delivery concept. Or the result can be used by more experienced software engineers to gain more knowledge about existing obstacles and for further research.

Métodos Ágeis são estratégias recentes na Engenharia de Software (começaram a se popularizar em 2001), que surgiram com a promessa de serem flexíveis e adaptáveis - características muito importantes para lidar com constantes mudanças de requisitos em projetos. O Scrum, método ágil estudado neste trabalho, necessita de uma infraestrutura adequada para gerar benefícios ao time que o utiliza. Neste estudo, implementou-se o Scrum, com o auxílio de uma infraestrutura adequada de ferramentas e processos, em uma organização que não utilizava qualquer tipo de gerenciamento de projetos. A partir do estabelecimento de algumas metas com o apoio do modelo GQM, buscou-se a melhoria nas métricas relacionadas e os resultados estão detalhados neste presente trabalho.
Agile methodology is a recent Software Engineering strategy (it became popular in 2001) that was created to be flexible and adaptable enough - characteristic very import to deal with constant requirements changes during a project lifecycle. Scrum, the agile methodology used during this study, requires an adequate infrastructure in order to offer its benefits. This study implemented Scrum and an adequate infrastructure of processes and tools to support it, inside a organization that didn’t use any kind of project management before. With the establishment of some goals using the GQM model, some improvements were expected and the results are detailed in this study.

Microsprinkler irrigation offers excellent flexibility for site-specific management of water and nitrogen inputs for citrus orchards in the southwestern United States. Escalating water costs, declining water availability, and increasing regulation of nitrogen (N) fertilizer use are causing growers to adopt practices to improve water and N use efficiency. 'Newhall' navels on 'Carrizo' rootstock were planted in Jan. 1997 and an experiment was initiated. This experiment was continued during 1999. The objective of the experiment was to develop appropriate management guidelines for N fertigation of 3-4 year old microsprinkler-irrigated navel orange trees. Treatments were factorial combinations of three N rates (0.15, 0.30, 0.45 lb N tree⁻¹ yr⁻¹) and three fertigation frequencies (3x/year, monthly, weekly). An untreated control was included. Trunk diameter was not responsive to N rate or fertigation frequency. Leaf N in all treatments, even controls, remained above the critical level (2.5%). However, at each N rate leaf N was highest with the weekly fertigation frequency. Nitrate analyses of soil samples indicate that nitrate leaching was highest with the highest N rate and 3x/year fertigation. Frequent fertigation is recommended because it results in higher leaf N and less nitrate leaching.

'Newhall' navel oranges on 'Carrizo' rootstock were planted in Mar. 1997 at the Citrus Agricultural Center. The objectives of this experiment were: i) to determine the effects of N rate and fertigation frequency for microsprinkler-irrigated navel oranges on tree N status, and crop yield and quality; and ii) to develop Best Management Practices which promote optimum tree growth and production while minimizing nitrate leaching. The trees are equipped with a microsprinkler irrigation system. The experiment is a randomized complete block factorial with N rates of 0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 lb N/tree/year, and fertigation frequencies of weekly, monthly, and three times per year. Unfertilized control trees are also included in the experimental design. Each of the ten treatments is replicated five times. The trees were harvested for the first time in Feb. 2001. Fruit were processed through an automatic fruit sizer, and fruit from each plot were further evaluated for fruit quality. Although unfertilized control trees had lower leaf N content than fertilized trees, fruit yield and quality of controls was no lower than fertilized trees. Similarly, there were few statistically significant differences in fruit yield and quality between trees receiving different N rates and fertigation frequencies.

Academic coaching has demonstrated positive relationships with college students' academic engagement and performance. A university campus in Puerto Rico implemented academic coaching for at-risk students, but the program has not been studied for its impact on student engagement. Guided by self-regulation theory and constructivism, this quasi-experimental study examined differences in engagement and identification of best teaching behaviors between students who experienced academic coaching (n = 115) and those who did not (n = 55). Students completed the Classroom Survey of Student Engagement (CLASSE) before and after the 4-week instructional unit and the Instructor Behavior Checklist (IBC) after the instructional unit. The data from the CLASSE and IBC were analyzed using mixed analysis of variance for engagement activities and student identification of effective teaching practices. There were no significant findings relating academic coaching to engagement; however, the experimental group identified significantly more best teaching practices used by their instructor. A Pearson correlation also yielded a significant positive relationship between students' engagement and the identification of instructor best practices. Based on these findings, a professional development program was created for instructors, which fosters student engagement and learning by encouraging instructor best practices through a classroom coaching model. The findings from this study may promote positive social change by helping to prepare faculty to integrate academic coaching and best teaching practices related to student engagement.

Context. System Development Methodologies (SDM’s) have been an area of intensive research in the field of software engineering. Different software organisations adopt different development methodologies and use different development practices. The frequency of usage of development practices and acceptance factors for adoption of development methodology are crucial for software organisations. The factors of acceptance and development practices differ across geographical locations. Many challenges have been presented in the literature with respect to the mismatch of the development practices across organisations while collaborating across organisations in distributed development. There is no considerable amount of research done in context of differences across development practices and acceptance factors for adoption of a particular development methodology. Objectives. The primary objectives of the research are to find out a) differences in (i) practice usage (ii) acceptance factors such as organisational, social and cultural b) explore the reasons for the differences and also investigate consequences of such differences while collaborating, across organisations located in India and Sweden. Methods. A literature review was conducted by searching in scientific databases for identifying common agile and plan-driven development practices and acceptance theories for development methodologies. Survey was conducted across organisations located in India and Sweden to find out the usage frequency of development practices and acceptance factors. Ten interviews were conducted to investigate, reasons for differences and consequences of differences from the software practitioners from organisations located in India and Sweden. Literature evidences were used to support the results collected from interviews. Results. From the survey, organisations in India have adopted a higher frequency of plan driven practices when compared to Sweden and agile practices were adopted at higher frequency in Sweden when compared to India. The number of organisations adopting "pure agile" methodologies have been significantly higher in Sweden. There was significant differences were found across the acceptance factors such as cultural, organisational, image and career factors between India and Sweden. The factors such as cultural, social, human, business and organisational factors are responsible for such differences across development practices and acceptance factors. Challenges related to communication, coordination and control were found due to the differences, while collaborating between Indian and Sweden sites. Conclusions. The study signifies the importance of identifying the frequency of development practices and also the acceptance factors responsible for adoption of development methodologies in the software organisations. The mismatch between these practices will led to various challenges. The study draws insights into various non-technical factors such as cultural, human, organisational, business and social while collaborating between organisations. Variations across these factors will lead to many coordination, communication and control issues. The U.S. Department of Education has mandated that each U.S. state develop successful initiatives to help students navigate their educational experience. Yet in Alabama students neither advance academically nor in improved life skills development. It is unclear if school administrators in Alabama Schools have contextual best practices for strategic planning and implementation to support and improve the experiences of vulnerable K-12 students. The purpose of this descriptive case study was to explore how administrators of Alabama schools develop contextual best practices for strategic planning and implementation to support students. The conceptual framework was designed using collaboration theory, organizational learning theory, and appreciative inquiry. The overarching question addressed developing an understanding about how Alabama school administrators develop contextual best practices for strategic planning and implementation. Appreciative inquiry was used to facilitate a focus group and individual interviews with 15 participants. Data were analyzed using inductive analysis and bracketing. Thus, 4 themes were identified from the interviews and focus group. Most significant results were the identification of having a positive, engaging mobile environment and improving full community participation in the collaborative process. Contributions to positive social change may be experienced by developing community-based collaboration where all contribute to, and benefit from, co-create, collaborate, and structure a more balanced and feasible approach to successful implementation of strategic plans in an environment of financial constraints.

Abstract:
This study was undertaken to examine the influence that a set of Professional Development (PD) initiatives had on faculty use of Moodle, a well known Course Management System. The context of the study was a private language university just outside Tokyo, Japan. Specifically, it aimed to identify the way in which the PD initiatives adhered to professional development best practice criteria; how faculty members perceived the PD initiatives; what impact the PD initiatives had on faculty use of Moodle; and other variables that may have influenced faculty in their use of Moodle. The study utilised a mixed methods approach. Participants in the study were 42 teachers who worked at the university in the academic year 2008/9. The online survey consisted of 115 items, factored into 10 constructs. Data was collected through an online survey, semi-structured face-to-face interviews, post-workshop surveys, and a collection of textual artefacts. The quantitative data were analysed in SPSS, using descriptive statistics, Spearman's Rank Order correlation tests and a Kruskal-Wallis means test. The qualitative data was used to develop and expand findings and ideas. The results indicated that the PD initiatives adhered closely to criteria posited in technology-related professional development best practice criteria. Further, results from the online survey, post workshop surveys, and follow up face-to-face interviews indicated that while the PD initiatives that were implemented were positively perceived by faculty, they did not have the anticipated impact on Moodle use among faculty. Further results indicated that other variables, such as perceptions of Moodle, and institutional issues, had a considerable influence on Moodle use. The findings of the study further strengthened the idea that the five variables Everett Rogers lists in his Diffusion of Innovations model, including perceived attributes of an innovation; type of innovation decision; communication channels; nature of the social system; extent of change agents' promotion efforts, most influence the adoption of an innovation. However, the results also indicated that some of the variables in Rogers' DOI seem to have more of an influence than others, particularly the perceived attributes of an innovation variable. In addition, the findings of the study could serve to inform universities that have Course Management Systems (CMS), such as Moodle, about how to utilise them most efficiently and effectively. The findings could also help to inform universities about how to help faculty members acquire the skills necessary to incorporate CMSs into curricula and teaching practice. A limitation of this study was the use of a non-randomised sample, which could appear to have limited the generalisations of the findings to this particular Japanese context.

Government initiatives for strengthening the safety of the United States led to increased requirements for military linguists' knowledge of foreign languages. This study explored the development of professional training for instructors at a military language school to address the gap in teaching services. The purpose of this single case study was to explore best teaching practices for engaging adult students' foreign language learning following andragogical principles. Knowles's theory of andragogy provided the conceptual framework. Data were collected using anonymous responses to an online survey from 26 instructors who answered 3 open-ended questions. Data were analyzed by coding answers to the research question and indicated that approximately one third of participants preferred language-centered practices for engaging their students' foreign language learning. Another third of the respondents noted learner-centered approaches, and the remainder listed both language- and learner-centered approaches among best teaching practices. The proposed curriculum might facilitate discussion about the benefits of each approach to promote teaching and learning at the site. Participating in suggested training that is grounded in the theory of andragogy and local data may bring about positive change by advancing instructors' expertise, improving educational services, and resulting in increased students' proficiency.

During Tucson rainstorms, many roads and neighborhoods experience high levels of flooding on the city’s street networks. This phenomenon creates unsafe road conditions, damage to the road infrastructure, and excessive urban stormwater runoff that is potentially polluted. The vast quantities of impervious surfaces in the urban landscape impede the rainwater’s ability to infiltrate the ground, thus resulting in increased volumes of runoff during a rainstorm. Stormwater management is used by municipalities and communities to address the previously mentioned adverse impacts of stormwater runoff. Various techniques and strategies used in stormwater management include, low impact development (LID), green infrastructure, and better site design (BSD) strategies implemented during design stages to reduce stormwater runoff levels. In addition, local governments can establish stormwater utilities and policies in order to help address and better manage the issue of stormwater runoff within urban areas. The primary research questions of this study will include: What are the most effective best management practices and techniques to address urban runoff? What combination of best management practices and government policies will be the more effective in addressing Tucson’s urban runoff problem? Accordingly, this study will examine a variety of policies and techniques to address stormwater runoff, and then, based on this information, provide a suggestion of the best practices and techniques that may be feasible for implementation in Tucson.

Startups are newly created companies with little or no operating history and with limited resources and markets. Software startup are aiming to develop cutting edge software products under highly uncertain conditions, overcoming fast-growing markets under multiple influences. The significance of startups for economic development is growing in software business due to their ability to quickly create innovative technologies and their potential to scale to a wide market. The objective of this thesis is to identify and analyze existing scientific literature regarding software development methodologies and practices used in startup companies published between Jan 2006 and Dec 2016. A systematic literature review was conducted to explore the previous research on software development methods and practices in startups. A review protocol was developed and used as a procedure to conduct the review. The data was collected from three databases i.e. IEEE Xplore, Scopus, ISI Web of Science. This research identified 30 relevant primary studies out of a total 1249 papers to answer defined research questions. The result show that agile and Lean Startup methodologies are the most used methodologies across startup companies. Due to the flexible nature of startups, tailoring specific methodology is a common practice among startup companies. Additionally, a total of 95 software development work practices are extracted from primary studies. This thesis concludes that software development methodologies in startups are informal, customized, and highly dependent on the experience of project managers. It is also noted that principles related to these development methodologies are not strictly followed due to limited resources and uncertainty in the market. Furthermore, the results shows that software startups choose development methodologies and practices which are flexible, light-weight and allow rapid changes.

Porous concrete pavements have been used in the eastern United States to effectively manage storm water when used as an alternative to impervious surfaces. This paper reviewed a wide body of available literature and research to examine their potential to reduce runoff at the University of Arizona. This study found that their unique structural properties enable them to infiltrate and detain large volumes of water in a stone sub-base below the slab, filtering out many street related contaminants without the need to install additional infrastructure. Porous concrete surfaces may support green development in the southwest where water is both a sensitive and valuable resource. However, long-term structural durability, clogging potential due to dust, and maintenance requirements have yet to be fully understood in this region. Abstract:
To help local, rural planners make decisions on which Best Management Practices (BMPs) are most appropriate for the control of Non-Point Sources of Pollution (NPSP) within their jurisdiction, a method is developed for unbiased site-specific evaluation of BMPs appropriateness. An appropriate BMP is functional, practical and cost effective. The method developed is a rational method suitable for the general evaluation of agricultural BMPs to control NPSP in rural watersheds. The method is functional, practical, and cost effective because it uses existing data and personnel wherever and whenever possible. Unlike other NPSP modeling methods, this method lends itself to the selective application of BMPs throughout the watershed based on its actual land use and physical composition. This means, BMP's can be applied to the entire watershed uniformly or applied to a subset of the watershed based on selection criteria such as field slope, soil type, or existing cover crop. In addition, a combination of selection criteria can be used, and a combination of BMPs. This flexibility in selecting various BMPs and BMP combinations, allows planners to pose many different schemes for controlling NPSP within the watershed. The results of the schemes can be compared to determine which scheme is the most appropriate for use within the specific watershed. The method developed relies heavily on the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service's (SCS) Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and uses data already being collected by the SCS and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). The method does require the creation of Hydrologic Response Units (HRUs) comprised of unique combinations or soil type and land use areas. To demonstrate the method's ability to select an effective BMPs for a watershed, a series of BMP scenarios were evaluated. The BMP scenarios were divided into three categories: a uniform application of a BMP throughout the watershed; a selective application of a BMP throughout the watershed and; the selective application of a set of BMP's throughout the watershed. Using a series of trial runs, the benefits of using the method were demonstrated. For example, similar results were obtained using a cropping BMP of "Corn, grain, soybean and cover" throughout the sample, and a ''no-till" BMP on 3 percent of the sample. This type of information was used by economic modelers to help target precious BMP implementation dollars. As an indirect result of the method's HRU development, it was possible to test the independence of each of the USLE factors within the Nansemond/Chuckatuck watershed. The results of the Duncan's Multiple Range Test shows an interdependence between the "soil type and the cover", "overland flow versus cover", and "overland flow versus soil type".

‘Newhall’ navel oranges on ‘Carrizo’ rootstock were planted in Mar. 1997 at the Citrus Agricultural Center. The objectives of this experiment, conducted during 2000 - 2003, were to i) determine the effects of N rate and fertigation frequency for microsprinkler-irrigated navel oranges on tree N status, and crop yield and quality; and ii) develop Best Management Practices which promote optimum tree growth and production while minimizing nitrate leaching. The trees were equipped with a microsprinkler irrigation system. The experiment was a randomized complete block factorial with N rates of 0, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45 lb N/tree/year, and fertigation frequencies of weekly, monthly, and three times per year. Each of the ten treatments was replicated five times. The trees were harvested in December or January of each growing season. Fruit were processed through an automatic fruit sizer, and fruit from each plot were further evaluated for fruit quality. Leaf N concentration and fruit yield of 4-6 year old trees were responsive to N rate, but not to fertigation frequency. Fruit quality and packout were not significantly affected by either N rate or fertigation frequency. Fruit yield was optimized at annual N rates of 0.25 lb/tree (four-year-old trees) to 0.35 lb/tree (six-year-old trees) during this experiment. We propose new tissue guidelines for guiding N fertilization of young microsprinkler-irrigated navel oranges.

Abstract:
The issue of limited part-time teacher professional development and its effect on adult learners' success at an adult education center in the northeast United States was addressed in this study. At the research site, almost 50% of the teaching staff are adjuncts. Professional development opportunities have been limited, with only 1 opportunity recorded during the 2014-2015 school year. When teachers are provided appropriate and relevant support for the curriculum and student needs, they realize their own craft growth, with measureable student achievement as a result. Knowles's adult learning theory served as the conceptual framework and provided structure for exploring and understanding nontraditional students. Using a qualitative exploratory case study design, the research questions focused on part-time teachers' perception of professional development on their teaching and instructional practice. Purposeful sampling was used to select 8 adjuncts to participate in semistructured interviews. Data analysis involved an inductive study of coded data retrieved and explored 5 themes: barriers to delivering an excellent teaching plan, teacher knowledge of student needs, administrative concerns, sense of community, and professional development needs. Themes were examined to develop a 3-day adult education training program. Implications for positive social change at the local level include information for educational administrators to design and promote appropriate and relevant professional development opportunities for adjuncts. This advancement of ongoing professional development could improve teaching and learning for adjuncts that may result in their craft improvement, positively impacting their nontraditional students.

Abstract Culturally Relevant Instruction integrated with Responsiveness to Intervention is considered a framework for creating equitable learning environments that engage and educate all students within the classroom. Creating equitable learning environments has been a problem for American educators for over forty years. Historically, the curriculum and instruction methods employed in most American classrooms centered in cultural paradigms that appealed to European American students and ignored the cultural significance of African Americans and other culturally diverse student populations. As a result, most African American students experience academic challenges in the classroom.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) revealed that since the 1970’s, the academic achievement gap between African American and European American students’ averages between 20 to 30 points on standardized Math and Reading examinations. With such a significant gap in academic performance, professional development teacher training and schools of education programs have attempted dramatic changes in their approaches to curriculum and instruction. The purpose of this basic qualitative research study is to explore what twelve teacher participants consider the best practices for creating equitable learning environments in their classrooms. Data collection included interviews with teachers about what strategies are most effective for integrating Responsiveness to Intervention with Culturally Responsive Instruction and how to identify and implement evidence-based instruction that enhances learning. Future studies should focus on the impact of Re-normed tests on student performance and full implementation of all components of CRI.

Abstract:
Recent legislative actions requiring schools in the local school system to increase the percentage of students served in the inclusion classroom has led to teachers having difficulty in implementing inclusion best practices. Using Vygotsky's social theory, the purpose of this case study was to examine teachers' understanding, knowledge, and perceptions of inclusive teaching strategies. The research questions were used to explore the teachers' understanding of inclusion, perceived effectiveness of strategies, and the resources that teachers feel are necessary to implement inclusion strategies. A purposeful sample of 10 teachers currently teaching in an inclusion setting were interviewed face-to-face using semistructured questions. The interview transcripts were coded for common themes. Some of the themes included a lack of training and a need for a better understanding of coteaching roles. Findings indicate that the teachers believe inclusion to be worthwhile, but challenging. The findings also indicate a need for more professional development and training on inclusion strategies. Using the findings, a 3-day professional course was designed to address the teachers' needs. This study will provide administrators with a greater understanding of the professional learning needs of the teachers. It has the potential to bring about positive social change in many ways, including better-prepared teachers, leading to more effective teaching practices and greater self-efficacy. Also, this project has the potential to reap many benefits for the county's students with disabilities population, by providing them with more suitable educational opportunities.

Using this approach, agiledevelopment thus aims at addressing mentioned issues of speed and uncertainty whiledeveloping only what customer needs from the beginning of the project. On the other hand,distributed software development is used in many organizations to reach global talent andglobal market. The problems associated with distributed software development such as lack ofenough communication and team coherency, have forced project managers to combine it withagile to mitigate these social problems. This study focuses on distributed agile development,its suitability for a typical project and its challenges and deficiencies. Text analysis andinterviews using qualitative methods are used in this scientific research work. From thetheoretical view point, different text covering agile methodology, distributed development andcombination of them were considered. This study covered two parts: first, an evaluation ofagile and distributed development opportunities and problems to help determine whether ornot distributed development is suitable for a project and second, considering the challengesonce starting to use this method and practices required to regard them. For the empirical part,the focus was put on Volvo IT employees by having seven interviews with members who arecurrently active in distributed agile development. These interviews were used to compare andverify the finding of the theoretical part. The results of the study were categorized into twosections. In the first part, important elements required to verify the suitability of using thismethod are provided. The recommended factors for this evaluation are cost, productivity,customer, team structure, etc. In the second part, the challenges of using distributed agiledevelopment were categorized into four parts: (a) challenges of selected agile method, whichthe focus in this study is Scrum, (b) challenges with time-zone differences, (c) communicationchallenges and (d) finally team building challenges. The required practices to address thesechallenges were also provided.
