Abstract:
Responding to the growing gap between the sociological ethos and the world we study, the challenge of public sociology is to engage multiple publics in multiple ways. These public sociologies should not be left out in the cold, but brought into the framework of our discipline. In this way we make public sociology a visible and legitimate enterprise, and, thereby, invigorate the discipline as a whole. Accordingly, if we map out the division of sociological labor, we discover antagonistic interdependence among four types of knowledge: professional, critical, policy, and public. In the best of all worlds the flourishing of each type of sociology is a condition for the flourishing of all, but they can just as easily assume pathological forms or become victims of exclusion and subordination. This field of power beckons us to explore the relations among the four types of sociology as they vary historically and nationally, and as they provide the template for divergent individual careers. Finally, comparing disciplines points to the umbilical chord that connects sociology to the world of publics, underlining sociology's particular investment in the defense of civil society, itself beleaguered by the encroachment of markets and states.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The French sociological tradition has long regarded the ‘individual’ as a reality situated outside its area of intellection and investigation. According to Durkheim, the individual is a psychological object par excellence. Sociology has thus long favored the study of collectives (groups, classes, categories, institutions, microcosms), suggesting that the individual was a reality which, in itself, fell short of the social. The article discusses a method from the mid-1990s of researching sociology at an individual scale. This approach is essentially embedded in the French sociological tradition, from Durkheim to Bourdieu via Halbwachs, despite the inflections and criticisms it might have of this tradition, while also drawing on the main theoretical knowledge of Norbert Elias’ relational and process-focused sociology. From empirical realization in methodological and theoretical reflexivity, this research program has progressed in dialog with various types of scientific knowledge more classically oriented toward the individual and their mental realities, such as cultural psychology, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology or the neurosciences.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Essay 15hp. Spring 2008

Title: Who is resbonsible? A soceityscientific discussion about burnout.

Author: Emilie Fuchs

Abstract

The purpose with this essay is to do a critical comparation between two different perspectives, burnout as an individual problem and burnout as a social problem. The first perspective states that the individual itself is responsible for her sickness while the second perspective states that the society and foremost the labour market should work in order to prevent people from beeing burned out. With that purpose in mind I want to enlighten and hopefully bring up the topic for discussion.

The essay is based upon the following questions:

• How can you sociologically understand the labour market of today?

• How can you understand burnout in an individual context?

• How can you understand burnout in a social context?

By studying and reading four books, I have presented the two different perspectives of burnout. Two books represents burnout out of a social perspective whereas the individual perspective is advocated in the other two books.

The results founded shows that the individual perspective means that the individual has to resolve his own problems even though the labour market is the main cause to why people becomes burned out. The social perspective, on the other hand, basically want the labour market to take responsibility and prevent burnouts.

Through the results, my conclusion is that the individual perspective represents the individualised world we live in. The social perspective of burnout shows the importance of a good solidarity, mainly at work. This point of view could probably lead to a growing safety on the labour market, which presumably results in less burned out people.

There are, after reading this essay, a few questions the reader may ask herself: Should not the society take responsibility and help those who are burned out? Does the structure of society contribute to the fact that people becomes burned out?

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of the current analysis is to look at both individual and contextual predictors of perceived risk of victimization. Specifically, the present work builds directly on the contributions of Rountree and Land (1996) and goes beyond their work in several ways. The current work includes additional census tract measures and redefines a key concept index. Drawing upon routine activity theory, social disorganization theory, and social disorder theory, the current analysis includes individual, neighborhood, and census tract level predictors of perceived risk. Data collected on neighborhood characteristics and crime rates in Seattle, Washington in 1990 are used. Using a multi-stage sampling design, 5,302 individuals were surveyed. Multinomial logistic regression is used in this analysis. General support is found for routine activity theory, social disorganization theory, and social disorder theory. Most notable, however, support is found for including census tract level measures. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:

In both academic and management literature it has been often stated that 70% of change efforts are not successful (Kotter, 1995; Smith, 2002). And while this failure rate may not be empirically tested, it points to a reality that most change efforts are not only difficult, but they are often unsuccessful (Hughes, 2011). When an organization undergoes a major organizational change process, the expected impacts include increased employee stress and overall productivity dips in the midst of the change (Dahl, 2011; Elrod II & Tippett, 2002). Measuring the impacts of change on employees and on organizational effectiveness during the change can add value and help increase the chances for change initiative success by allowing necessary adjustments and identifying and leveraging additional business improvement predictors along the way.

In this dissertation, I answer the question “What is the impact of going through a major organizational change on business outcomes and employee and organizational health?” My results suggest that an organization can transform the expected negative effects of a major change effort to positive effects by focusing on three things: 1) Improving employee mental health; 2) Increasing positive practices, including leadership’s impact on the organization; and 3) Improving employee involvement, communication, and teamwork. Finally, the results also show that improved employee mental health and improved positive practices are significantly related to improved business outcomes. Organizational change outcomes can be successfully informed by linking business outcomes with change impact measures.

Abstract:

This study examined the relationships between affective commitment to change (desire), normative commitment to change (obligation), and continuance commitment to change (cost), as predictors of behavioral support for change. Affective commitment to change and normative commitment to change both demonstrated curvilinear relationships with behavioral support. Continuance commitment to change did not. This study also used residualized relative importance analyses, techniques for a full decomposition of the variance in nonlinear regression models. The nonlinear models accounted for more of a change in variance than did the linear regression models. The discussion section includes a scatterplot diagram intended to bridge the gap between scholars and practitioners in that the figure illustrates a range of resistant to commitment behaviors that cause organizational change initiatives to fail. The conclusion provides recommendations for researchers regarding the inclusion of a nonlinear frame when designing organizational change studies, and recommendations for practitioners regarding the damage that compliance is responsible for in organizational change initiatives.

Abstract:
The monograph develops the theoretical and methodological foundations of the sociology of well-being as an independent branch of sociology designed to investigate how people define and experience well-being. The corresponding terminological apparatus characterizing this direction and applied tools for assessing and measuring the well-being of the Russian population have been developed. Determinants of well-being, factors of well-being, dominants of well-being, domains of well-being are identified as attributes of well-being of individual social groups of Russian society. A typology of strategic approaches to improving the well-being of the population in Russian regions is presented. A model of the strategic architecture of socially oriented well-being of the population of the region as a special type of well-being, implying the focus of society on future development, has been developed. The practical value of the research results is associated with the possibility of their use in strategic planning and management of social policy by public authorities at various levels. For students, postgraduates and teachers of sociological universities and faculties, as well as a wide range of readers interested in welfare issues.

Abstract:
AbstractMilitary sociology, or more precisely, the sociology of military organizations, studies social facts about military institutions, their functional and structural components, and their relations with the societies that constitute their environments. Three periods can be roughly distinguished in the historical development of military sociology: the origins of the discipline, the Cold War period, and the current one. Like other subfields of sociology, the themes discussed in military sociology reflect the evolution of society at large. This particular branch of sociology bridges individual behaviors with broader social structures, in this case, military organizations.

Abstract:
AbstractThis introduction chapter provides context and background to the concept of trace in social sciences, also presenting an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this volume. Information that was not meant to be informative and evidence that did not expect to possess evidential character, traces are construed as evidence only from the vantage point of the observer, inadvertently left behind by those who produced the trace in the first place (indeed, awareness might change footprints and make them fade out). Conceived as clues rather than statements, traces prove to be useful for studying current social facts and individuals who have not yet vanished. This holds to be true especially in our contemporary platform society, due to its datafication processes and the ensuing quantification of features never quantified before; digital footprints determine the selection of the most relevant content or services to offer, creating accordingly personalized feedback. Thus, individual and collective online behavior leading to traces production is shaped by digital environments’ affordances and constraints; at the same time, such socio-technically situated traces retroact over digital systems (by fueling algorithms and predictive models), thus reinforcing, or questioning, the power relations at stake. Conclusively, a brief remark is made on future research possibilities associated with the sociology of traces.

Abstract:
AbstractIn building upon the cases presented in Chaps. 10.1007/978-3-030-88455-0_2, 10.1007/978-3-030-88455-0_3, and 10.1007/978-3-030-88455-0_4, we develop a Sociology of Interdisciplinarity that draws our empirical insights together with resources from Science and Technology Studies (STS), in addition to Sociology of Scientific Knowledge, Research Policy, Infrastructure Studies, Anthropology, and Philosophy of Science. The key novelty of this framework is using STS insights to unpick the dynamics and consequences of interdisciplinary science, which distinguishes us from decades of earlier interdisciplinarity studies and gaps in understanding. Moreover, we not only focus on individual scholars and their experiences but pay careful attention to the wider contexts of interdisciplinary research, such as the impacts of funding structures, different access to resources, and power relations. We are careful in our approach so that our units of analyses—which vary from research groups and projects to whole epistemic communities and research policies—are most appropriate for the problem definitions that we put forward. The framework rests on a set of six dimensions, which we discuss in relation to current debates in the literature and our empirical analyses.

Abstract:
" When studying the social issues associated with the relations of mutual recognition between oneself and the other, in which our disregard for any position or perception of the nature of this relationship leads to the denial of its existence in social life, the human self is not complete without the other as a complementary partner of its existence and its continuation in a social medium chosen by man as an object that can not live isolated alone from the children of his race, nor was he able to establish a positive lasting relationship with his other partner but subjected the human being to his brother man, and the result of this relationship The negativity of images of violence, conflict, domination and domination, which made the search for the sources behind the lack of self-recognition of the other individual or group, especially in societies of pluralism and cultural diversity as a feature that can be considered universal, to form the focus of theories and studies carried out by philosophers, sociologists, economists and psychologists through which they identified the main sources leading to denial or non-recognition of the other. Abstract:
The state is a social community that represents a multitude of individuals and the interactions between them. From this, we conclude that the state is a legal and a social being. Max Weber claimed that the assignment of sociology is “to understand social behavior through interpretation.” Both then and today, the subject of the sociology of law is social behavior. The legal order encompasses, analyzes, and acts on the actions performed by persons as citizens or bodies of the state who interpret their behavior. The state is a social reality within the legal order because all individuals belonging to the same state constitute a unity, i.e., one state’s population. The population is one of the three basic elements of the state. According to these same constituents, the sociology that studies the state is interested in analyzing that behavior. This paper will specifically analyze human behavior oriented towards the legal order, the normative character of the state, the problem of society in a globalized world, and the impact of globalization on the legal system through the movement of individuals in legal systems and societies.

Abstract:
Background: Ukraine took a major step towards promoting inclusive education by adopting a new law on education in 2017. This law guarantees the right to education for all individuals, regardless of their disabilities, and aims to enhance their socialization and educational opportunities. However, most higher education institutions require adaptation to the individual needs of individuals with special educational needs. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore the conceptual foundations and identify practical problems in implementing the strategy for creating an inclusive educational environment in higher education institutions in Ukraine. Methods: We used document analysis as a method to identify the problems in the way of implementing the strategy for creating an inclusive educational environment in higher education institutions in Ukraine and ways to address them. Results: The results of the study of the conceptual foundations and implementation problems of inclusive education principles in higher education institutions in Ukraine showed an increasing number of individuals who require the creation of an inclusive educational environment, as well as practical problems with implementing these principles, including unprepared facilities, insufficient qualification of teaching staff, and a lack of adapted educational materials. Conclusion: The aim of inclusive education for individuals with special educational needs is to ensure full and equal access to education and to develop their potential, enabling them to function successfully in society. Inclusive education prevents the exclusion of such individuals from the educational process and creates an environment where everyone can freely express their ideas and needs, develop their potential, and receive support from teachers and other students. Abstract:
The structure of the contemporary city has its origin in the modern city, which emerged after the industrial revolution, as a result of the new relations of production. The changes, in the transition from modernity to post-modernity, are not restricted to the territory, and reflect on the individual, and the cosmopolitan personality loses its reason to exist. It is proposed to analyze how the discipline of urban sociology understands the changes that occur in society and in the individual in the midst of these processes. It also seeks to understand, in particular, the process of urban dispersion and the formation of the anti-urban individual, as well as the relationship between ideology and the conformation of the territory. In order to do so, a literature review was used regarding the ideas of the modern city, its transformations and dispersion in the territory throughout the 20th century and the role of the individual in this territory in transformation. The research demonstrates the complexity of understanding contemporary urban space, demonstrating it as a result of the reciprocal relationship between the individual and the space produced and how this fact has aggravated socio-spatial segregation, as well as the tendency of individualization of relationships and anti-urban feeling in contemporary society. Abstract:
Changes in the value systems of contemporary societies resulted in new interpretations and the redefinition of the values, norms, and traditions. These changes made various impacts on personal meaningfulness and people became more vulnerable to death after attributions of the meanings to death, as many other things, had been removed from the social domain to the individual domain. In the context of this study, a new term called dark cinematography has been coined. This study aims to understand the motives behind the consumption of the dark products of cinema industry and seeks the postmodern extensions of the sociology of death in the cinema industry. Dark cinematography is defined as the supply and consumption of the movies in the cinema industry in which elements related to real or commodified death, suffering, and macabre events are made visible from an artistic perspective based on a plot and presented for the interests of the (dark) audience. Dark cinematography is a postmodern tool to cope with death and provides individuals a unique chance for the reconceptualization, neutralization, and control of it.

Abstract:
Background: Trauma as a fact of collective perception plays an important role in the formation of collective identities in modern Western societies. A sociological analysis of Alexander's cultural trauma aims to explain the symbolic mechanisms behind the construction of trauma. Its explanatory power is illustrated by the example of events in pre-war Ukraine. Purpose: Analyze events in Ukraine using the concept of cultural trauma. Methods: To achieve the goal, the method of analysis of events and facts was used, as well as theoretical analysis of sources related to the concept of cultural trauma. Results: Analysis of events in Ukraine through the concept of cultural trauma by J. Alexander revealed a direct link between trauma and mediatization of traumatic objects. Conclusion: Thus, we analyzed the socio-cultural context of events in Ukraine based on the concept of "cultural trauma". The signs and areas that were affected by it are highlighted. The characteristics of cultural trauma are named and examples of events and practices, both individual and collective, are given, which contributed to the creation of historical and cultural memory. Keywords: cultural trauma, social construct, events, J. Alexander, sociocultural context.

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of using cloud technologies in the training of sociology students in Ukraine. The popularity of Twitter in Ukraine is analyzed. The possibilities of using Twitter as a learning tool in classroom are discussed. List of recommended tweeters, including Ukrainian resources as well as resources related to population censuses is proposed. The article offers examples of student activities for Social Statistics and Demographics courses. The article demonstrates that new forms of student’s activity related to data analysis introduced by academics and practitioners (building art objects and storytelling based on data; shared data collection by citizens through mobile devices, “play with data” modern data visualization services) can be realized with Twitter resources and can help overcome the barriers that arise while studying quantitative methods.
