Abstract:

This review essay looks at the plurality of research conducted today in the sociology of financial markets by examining a pioneering and little-known study – the PhD thesis of Ira Oscar Glick. It is indeed possible to find in this 1957 thesis some insights that are later solidified by several contemporary lines of research in the sociology of financial markets (new economic sociology, science and technology studies, gender studies, Bourdieusian sociology, ethnomethodology, the economics of conventions). This rediscovery of a key author in the history of the field may lead us to reconsider his legacy and delve into a landmark work that potentially still harbors unexplored insights capable of opening up new avenues for research.

Abstract:

We live in an era of pervasive connectivity. At an astonishing pace, much of the world’s population is joining a common network. The proliferation of communications and information technology creates very significant changes for statecraft. But we have to keep in mind that the Internet is not a magic potion for political and social progress. Technology by itself is agnostic. It simply amplifies the existing sociologies on the ground, for good or ill. And it is much better at organizing protest movements than organizing institutions to support new governments in place of those that have been toppled. Diplomacy in the twenty-first century must grapple with both the potential and the limits of technology in foreign policy, and respond to the disruptions that it causes in international relations.

Abstract:

This article examines the emergence of a medical condition increasingly cited as a cause of death in fatality inquiries in Canada: Excited Delirium. Beyond the association between excited delirium and police use of electrical weapons known as Tasers, one common concern about the medical condition is whether or not it is “real.” Bypassing strictly realist or purely constructivist accounts, this article uses the conceptual language of historical ontology and science and technology studies to investigate how excited delirium is enacted within and between disparate medico-legal sites. Contributing to sociologies of death and dying and category formation, it attends to the textually-mediated practices of legal and medical experts in the United States and Canada that labour to produce excited delirium as a coherent medical condition rather than a “diagnosis of exclusion” reached upon autopsy.

Abstract:

The aim of the article is to demonstrate the relevance of the usage of sociological knowledge for the development of aviation safety culture through the safety and security, Sociology of Safety and Sociology of Transport as an integral part of applying a systematic approach for strengthening the aviation safety. In the situation of globalization of the world, the structure of sociological knowledge in the XXI century is very branched. However, Ukraine has its own popular list of special and branch sociologies, which meets the specific challenges of the time of modernization of Ukrainian society. The goals of the industrial stage of its development stimulated the formation of Sociology of Labor, changing the focus of the goals of the economy from the basics of planning to market. That gave a powerful impact on the formation of Sociology of the Economics, the market, the individual, and so on. There were not identified the conditions, circumstances that should determine the application of the potential of sociology to comprehend any direction of human activity. Sociologists strive not to lose the integrity of reflection, as social science always gains more power, accumulating both empirical material and theoretical generalizations on significantly different aspects of social life, which can be taken into account in the development of each sociological industry. Therefore, security contains resistance to the Sociology of Safety, Sociology of Technology, Sociology of Transport, etc. Accumulation of such knowledge with necessity leads to synergistic effect and the growth of a culture of safety in aviation.

Back in 1879 two Romanian Academy’s prizes were established for science and literature: „Gheorghe Lazăr” and „Ion Heliade Rădulescu” (www.acad.ro). Abstract:

An unrestricted social world and the problem(s) of sociology Sociology has been characterized as an embattled science all through its century-long history. Now, by the turn of the mil¬lennium it is still considered a controver¬sial science: contemporary discussions in the USA have made it clear that so¬ciology risks implosion from the inside either because it is evolving into a science of cultural differences mirroring the ma¬ny forms of contemporary moral redresses or else as an esoteric symbol system out of touch with social reality. The article starts out with surveying some such con¬temporary arguments, raised by socio¬logists and directed against the sociolo¬gical discipline in the 90´s. Seen from within the system of the modern sciences, sociology is typically what has been called an “unrestricted” science. It harbours a wide variety of theo¬retical and methodological approaches without any real centre. Profound que¬stions have recently been raised if socio¬logy as a discipline is falling apart in various specialties with regard to sub¬stances, theories, and methods. Network arrangements among cognitive special¬ties threaten the classic disciplinary mo¬del of science today in general, and so¬ciology is especially threatened by such de-centring tendencies. But the thrust of the argument in this article is to view the alleged dissolution of sociology in light of the wider theme of an eventual dissolution of the notion of the “social”. Could it be, by the end of the 20´s century, that our social world assumes different characteristics than those contained in the old framework of the nation-state. Many different notions of the term social are then listed aiming at the question if the term social itself is but a late historic construction, pertai¬ning in particular to the glue that was to hold the territorial state together. As a “resource” the social world is a precondi¬tion of human life, but as a “topic of dis¬course”, and a theme of sociology, em¬ployments of the term social need consi¬dering a future social world without de¬finite borders. Due to the expansion not the least of mass technology, the social world has been transformed immensely. The expan¬sion process can be captured as a three¬fold process: individualization, contrac¬tualization, and mediatization. Whereas the old container theory stipulated a more or less unified model of the social, a new vision of the social requires us to accom¬modate to this overriding and threefold expansion process. However, these diffe¬rent processes may pull in different cog¬nitive directions - and the question will be raised in the end if the future of socio¬logy can find a “reflective equilibrium” and maintain its disciplinary bounda¬ries or if the discipline will dissolve as a consequence of the dissolution of its own subject-matter?

Cet article a pour objectif de faire réfléchir sur la place de la science dans la gestion des eaux souterraines du Système Aquifère Guarani – aquifère transfrontalier qui traverse quatre pays différents, à savoir : le Brésil, l'Argentine, le Paraguay et l'Uruguay. Cette réflexion sera élaborée dans les niveaux global et local fondés en deux moments historiques différents, où les actions du premier niveau portent sur la dimension locale du dernier. En niveau global, nous soulignons la construction du Projet Protection Environnemental et Management Durable Intégré du Système Aquifère Guarani, connu comme Projet Aquifère Guarani (PSAG), entre les années de 2003 à 2009. En niveau local, nous observons la mobilisation (et non mobilisation) du discours scientifique pour la gestion des eaux souterraines dans la région de Ribeirão Preto, une ville située dans l'État de São Paulo au Brésil, qui a une relation complexe avec les ressources souterraines possédant sur son territoire une zone d'affleurement de cette nappe phréatique. La science, donc, doit être comprise comme un discours récursif, soit pour les scientifiques, soit pour les autres agents en différents moments, afin de légitimer un positionnement particulaire. Du point de vue théorique, ce travail mobilise les concepts de la sociologie de Pierre Bourdieu pour étudier la construction des discours dans ces deux échelles et pour apprendre la prise de position des agents en ce qui concerne les sujets abordés.

Cette introduction au numéro « IA et médecine » propose une mise en perspective, du point de vue des sciences sociales, du croisement et de la rencontre de ces deux domaines. En s’appuyant sur la présentation et la discussion des six articles qui composent ce numéro, ainsi que sur d’autres travaux relevant principalement de la sociologie et des Science and Technology Studies (STS) , plusieurs enjeux et questions sont mis en exergue : le caractère inachevé, imparfait, voire contre-productif, dans les situations de travail, de l’automatisation engendrée par des dispositifs d’IA ; l’acuité d’un décryptage à nouveaux frais de la notion d’« explicabilité » en rapport avec des processus de conception et des usages concrets, qui peuvent être en déphasage avec le droit en vigueur ; enfin, la relative absence des patients dans les pratiques émergentes étudiées, qui s’explique notamment par le fait que l’IA est mobilisée bien au-delà du cadre de la relation clinique afin d’équiper différentes catégories de professionnels qui n’interviennent pas directement dans la prise en charge des patients et dans les soins.

En réponse aux controverses et politiques publiques visant à réguler les pollutions environnementales provoquées par les pratiques agricoles de fertilisation sur les milieux aquatiques, différentes voies d’accompagnement à l’écologisation sont proposées par les scientifiques et les organismes de conseil aux agriculteurs et agricultrices. L’une d’entre elles est numérique : des logiciels de gestion et des outils d’aide à la décision (des services de conseil numériques) sont promus comme des intermédiaires sociotechniques de la mise en œuvre de la directive européenne sur les nitrates au niveau des exploitations. Par une enquête qualitative parmi les scientifiques, les entreprises concevant les outils et des agriculteurs céréaliers utilisant ces technologies, cet article revient sur la trajectoire technique et politique par laquelle ces outils deviennent des « objets-intermédiaires » de l’écologisation et les effets de ces technologies sur la mise en place effective de la réglementation environnementale au niveau des fermes. Au prisme de la sociologie des mondes agricoles, de la sociologie des politiques publiques environnementales et des Science and Technology Studies (STS), l’article montre que ces outils participent de processus d’inertie écologique (au niveau de leur conception technique, leurs usages et leurs futurs) et ouvrent des « passe-droits » numériques dans la réglementation environnementale, inégalement appropriés au sein des mondes agricoles.

Abstract:

The sociology of Islam arguably emerged in the fourteenth century with the work of Ibn Khaldun, but the term itself appeared first in 1931. In recent years, the field has expanded to encompass the study of all aspects of the social lives of the world's Muslims, who constitute one-fifth of the global population—hence the plural label, sociologies of Islam. This article reviews four central debates in the field: approaches to Muslim modernities, challenging Orientalist images of Islam as enduringly premodern; tensions between national and global Islamic identities and institutions; activism around Muslim women's rights, both by women and by state-building men; and proliferating challenges to Muslim authorities. As the field confronts political pressures and barriers to scholarly travel, the way forward may involve collaborations that extend training opportunities and comparative research across national and regional borders.

Les conséquences du changement climatique menacent la vie sur Terre. Elles accentueront différents risques pour les sociétés humaines, dont celui d'inondation qui sera particulièrement amplifié au sein des territoires de côtes basses. Il est fondamental de penser les stratégies d'adaptation de ces territoires dans le but de réduire la vulnérabilité des populations à ce risque. Les études de perception du risque d'inondation fournissent un apport précieux pour bâtir des politiques de gestion en phase avec ces enjeux. Cet article porte sur une étude de ce type au sein de la communauté urbaine de Dunkerque. Dans le cadre d'une thèse, une large enquête de perception du risque a été menée au cours de l'année 2016 au sein de ce territoire de côtes basses densément peuplé historiquement concerné par l'inondation. L'enquête a été menée selon une méthodologie se situant à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines : géographie, sociologie, psychosociologie, économie et aménagement. Les résultats mettent en évidence, dans la population : (1) une perception dissonante du risque d'inondation et une faible préoccupation à son sujet ; (2) des représentations spatiales du risque très différentes des représentations officielles ; (3) l'influence de la perception du risque sur le consentement à payer pour s'en prémunir. Au-delà de fournir apport théorique et opérationnel pour les sciences cindyniques, l'analyse effectuée permet de proposer quatre leviers d'adaptation pour diminuer la vulnérabilité des habitants face à l'inondation. Ces leviers concernent la sensibilisation des habitants, les modes de communication, la participation des individus et le développement des liens de confiance avec les pouvoirs publics.

La prévision météorologique a longtemps été fille de l'astrologie et n'a été considérée comme faisant partie de la science moderne que bien plus tard. Depuis un siècle environ, une révolution a mené aux prévisions actuelles dont la précision était encore inimaginable il y a un demi-siècle. L'avènement des satellites et des supercalculateurs a été d'une importance capitale, mais cette révolution n'aurait pas eu lieu sans des avancées majeures de la recherche pure et appliquée dans plusieurs domaines : dynamique et physique des fluides, analyse numérique, sociologie, systèmes dynamiques, contrôle optimal et depuis peu intelligence artificielle. Ces avancées ont permis aux scientifiques et aux développeurs de mettre au point des prévisions météorologiques opérationnelles. Le rêve immémorial de prévoir l'évolution du temps dans les heures, jours ou saisons à venir est presque devenu réalité. Ces prévisions permettent de prendre des décisions parfois lourdes de conséquences en matière de sécurité ou d'impact socio-économique. Cette épopée est exemplaire des bénéfices apportés à tous par les progrès des sciences et des technologies, elle mérite d'être racontée aujourd'hui, en particulier aux jeunes. Weather forecasting has long been related to astrology and was not considered part of modern science until much later. Over the past century or so, this situation has been overturned: weather forecasts have now reached an accuracy that could not be dreamed of even half a century ago. The advent of satellites and supercomputers was of paramount importance, but this would not have taken place without major advances in pure and applied research in a large series of fields: fluid dynamics and physics, numerical analysis, sociology, dynamic systems, optimal control and recently artificial intelligence. These advances were used by scientists and developers for operational weather forecasts. The long-lived dream of predicting how the weather will change in the coming hours, days or seasons has almost become reality. This in turn provides strong guidance for making decisions in a wide range of weather dependent activities. This epic is an example of the benefits brought to all by progress in science and technology, it deserves to be told today, particularly to young people.

AbstractSurveying three generations of comparative sociologists, separated by abrupt discontinuities, the study reaches the conclusion that the original promise of comparative sociology set in motion a century ago remains largely unfulfilled. It will then be argued that the work of the third generation of comparative sociologists on civilizational analysis and multiple modernities can redeem the promise of comparative sociology by rectifying the neglect of developmental patterns in other civilizations and recovering the fundamental relevance of the periphery. The third generation is thus seeking to undo the erasure of the historical experience of a very sizeable portion of humankind from the foundation of social theory. This argument is illustrated by selective reference to the concept of the nation-state, and comparisons of civilizational processes and developmental patterns that stem from different religions and traditions and generate varieties of nationalism, alternative modernities and patterns of secularization.

RésuméL’objectif principal de ce travail est de mettre au jour la structuration et le fonctionnement particuliers de la sociologie du sport et de ses acteurs en France. Nous montrons que le champ de la sociologie du sport représente un univers discursif diversifié et pluriel d’une part, tensionnel d’autre part. Plus précisément, nous nous proposons d’identifier la « communauté » des sociologues du sport en France : sa structuration institutionnelle, les trajectoires de ses acteurs, en même temps que les grands clivages cognitifs qui la marquent, instaurant des positions hiérarchiques caractéristiques d’un champ. L’espace de la sociologie du sport en France ne donne pas l’image d’une communauté scientifique unifiée. Clivé institutionnellement en deux groupes distincts du point de vue des structures de travail comme de celles de la formation, il l’est aussi si l’on considère les thèmes d’étude privilégiés et les théories. Son institutionnalisation bipartite rend cette spécialité singulière en la faisant osciller entre le monde des sciences sociales et celui du sport.

Sommaire L'histoire de la dernière encyclique, MATER ET MAGISTRA, illustre d'une façon dramatique, dans notre société contemporaine, la division du travail entre les relations publiques et le domaine académique. Dans le monde anglo-saxon au moins cette encyclique est celle qui a connu la plus large diffusion et qui a été la mieux reçue de toutes les encycliques sociales. Par ailleurs, il semble évident que moins qu'à toutes les autres on a apporté un intérêt soutenu. On a pas à chercher bien loin pour trouver la raison de cette indifférence générale. MATER ET MAGISTRA n'est pas seulement un document à l'occasion d'une crise ou, d'un problème. Elle est l'aboutissement de tout un siècle de développements académiques. D'une part, la doctrine sociale est seulement un segment d'une demi-douzaine de champs théologiques revitalisés. D'autre part, le fossé entre les sciences sociales et les champs de pensée plus traditionnels s'est graduellement rétréci. RERUM NOVARUM (1891) a ouvert la théologie à la science politique, QUADRAGESIMO ANNO (1931) a évidemment utilisé les principes économiques modernes et maintenant MATER ET MAGISTRA (1961) utilise la sociologie. Les experts en sciences sociales sont bien conscients de l'intérêt croissant chez leurs collègues depuis plusieurs générations au sujet du bien-être, des valeurs, des lois naturelles, des insuffisances du pragmatisme. Lorsque les dimensions proprement académiques de cette encyclique sont reconnues, il s'en suit immédiatement que cette doctrine nécessite pour son exposition un statut académique approprié. En premier lieu, il ressort de la structure de MATER ET MAGISTRA que l'étudiant de la théologie sociale doit nécessairement s'appuyer sur le spécialiste en sciences sociales. En second lieu, l'étudiant de la théologie sociale doit reconnaître que l'homme moderne désire une philosophie sociale adéquate. C'est une exigence beaucoup plus englobante que celle des encycliques précédentes. Il ne suffit plus maintenant de condamner l'individualisme et le scientisme du XIXe siècle, ou d'encourager davantage l'association — une union par-ici, une coopérative par là. Comme le préconise avec insistence le Pape Jean, une option morale positive de l'organisation ou de la socialisation est nécessaire à tout homme dans la société moderne. Alors qu'il est évident pour celui qui analyse ces questions que tout le pouvoir moral de la religion sera nécessaire afin de dissiper l'ensemble des accréditations religieuses et de la loi naturelle acceptées par l'individualisme de notre société industrielle ou le socialisme des autres traditions, la question présente de nouveaux aspects. Il y a déjà une évidence abondante que les professeurs des matières philosophiques et théologiques traditionnelles ne réaliseront pas la nécessité actuelle d'une philosophie sociale articulée s'ils n'empruntent pas aux spécialistes des sciences sociales la signification et l'importance de la socialisation aujourd'hui. De plus, c'est seulement de l'esprit en sciences sociales que le philosophe social apprendra l'apport réaliste de la remarque du Pape Jean à l'effet que dans le milieu social moderne un certain déterminisme ne cause pas de préjudice à la liberté. La récente étude de Robert A. Brady sur la place des standards dans la civilisation en est un excellent exemple (Organization, Automation, and Society, ch. IV). L'importance croissante de l'étudiant des sciences sociales est aussi un autre indice du rôle croissant de l'apostolat laïc pour l'avenir de la doctrine sociale.

The street has long been a key laboratory for studies of social life, from the roots of urban sociology in the ethnographies of the Chicago School to the diverse range of contemporary studies which consider the performative, affective and non-representational nature of street etiquette and encounter. For all this, the street remains only loosely defined in many studies, and sometimes disappears from view entirely, with social action often privileged over material and environmental context. This Special Issue is intended as a spur to take the street more seriously in contemporary sociology, and explores the importance of the street as a site, scale and field for sociological research. Recognising that the street is both contradictory and complex, the Introduction to this Issue draws out emerging themes in the shifting sociologies of the street by highlighting the specific contribution interdisciplinary work can make to our understanding of streets as distinctive but contested social spaces.
