Brar, Jaspreet S. Epidemiology of Schizophrenia. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199331505.003.0003.

Abstract:
Epidemiology can help us understand who is at risk for developing a disorder, what may happen to them, and perhaps even why people get the disorder to begin with. In this chapter, we will review the incidence and prevalence of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, as well as factors affecting such rates. Risk factors for psychosis include socio-demographics (e.g., gender, age, migrant status, class), predisposing factors (e.g., season of birth, perinatal trauma), and precipitating factors (e.g., substance use, psychosocial stress). We will highlight controversial issues such as traumatic life events, prenatal infection, and cannabis use, considering how epidemiological factors can shed light on the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and related illnesses.

Abstract:
Depression and disease-related psychological problems in type 2 diabetes (T2DM), termed diabetes distress (DD), is a global problem and negatively impacts quality of life, self-management, and cardiovascular mortality. However, risk factors for and consequences of emotional distress vary and have different cultural meaning. In the East and low- to middle-income countries (LMIC), contextual factors, socio-demographics, low socio-economic status, and sub-optimal health/medical services predispose DD more than in the West and high-income countries (HIC). People from non-Western and LMIC may hold a more stigmatizing view of depression leading to mislabelling depression due to somatization, underdiagnosis, and a lack of clinical care. The prevalence of depression and DD is generally double in LMIC compared with HIC. There is a lack of direct and good-quality evidence of depression and DD’s effects on clinical outcomes, therefore improving access to effective treatment for depression and DD remains a global challenge.

Abstract:
The publication provides a compact, up-to-date and easily understandable insight into Austria's religious diversity. In the introduction, the concept of religion is described, an outline of developments in the history of religions and legal history in dealing with religions is given, and developments in the demographics of religion in Austria are outlined. Then, the entire religious landscape of Austria is examined from the perspective of socio-cultural studies of religions. This includes small groups, agnostic and atheistic traditions. The focus is on internal diversity and the present. Finally, the relation of Austria's religions with different areas of society (education, art, media, politics, economy, law) is portrayed by scholars of the respective disciplines. Abstract:
Despite a roughly equal number of men and women in the general population, women consistently have lower rates of incarceration than their male peers. The difference is not trivial; there are 10 men incarcerated for each woman in the United States. The correctional system was confronted with issues specific to female inmates in part as a product of the War on Drugs from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. During this period, the number of women incarcerated rose 888%. The bulk of this rise was attributable to arrests for non-violent drug related charges. As the correctional system began to experience an influx of women, it became clear that they were different from their male peers. The differences included epidemiology of psychiatric disorders, intensity of health service utilization, social stressors, and patterns of offending. The logical question arose as to whether women needed a different treatment approach in the correctional system than men. The term ‘gender responsive programming’ emerged and represented the idea that women have specific needs distinct from male peers that could best be met with treatment designed for women. The purpose of this chapter is to describe, given the current knowledge base: the patterns of offending and arrests for women versus men; the socio-demographics of incarcerated women; the psychopathology exhibited by incarcerated women; and finally, how best to treat incarcerated women and implement this treatment within jails and prisons.
