Abstract:
Of all the figures in the struggle over turn-of-the-century vice reform, Anthony Comstock is perhaps the last one might expect to encounter immortalized in the nude. He acquired his fame as a censor of nudity, among other offenses: from 1873 to his death in 1915, Assistant United States Postmaster Comstock lent his name and his enthusiasm for law enforcement to the prosecution of the “Comstock Laws,” the eponymous statutes which restricted the dissemination of vicious images and information through the United States mail. In his government post and as the head of New York City's private Society for the Suppression of Vice, Comstock prosecuted quack physicians, abortionists, lottery runners, purveyors of lewd literature and art, free love advocates and physical culture devotees. By the end of his career, he had arrested more than 3,700 people and burned over fifty tons of obscene books, 3,984,063 obscene pictures, and 16,900 photographic plates.

Abstract:
Since Reconstruction there has always been an antipornography movement in the United States. From the heyday of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice in the 1880s, to the debates over the Hays code in Hollywood in the 1930s, to the founding of Women Against Pornography in 1979, our society has consistently struggled to resolve two crucial and interrelated questions: First, does pornography incite people to behave in “antisocial” ways or to commit crimes against individuals and society? Second, should the state regulate or censor materials it regards as obscene or pornographic? These debates have always been compelling, drawing authorities from just about everywhere in our culture. Many participants in this running controversy have devoted their lives to its resolution. None has come even remotely close to settling the matter. Today the courts and legislatures continue to argue the pornography question much as they did in the 1860s, when jurists first established that the test of obscenity lay in whether a book has depraved and corrupted the minds of the vulnerable.

Abstract:
Although rural leisure in the half-century before the First World War is an under-researched subject, its most striking features seem to have been (at least according to the existing historiography) that it was dominated by the gentry and clergy, and restricted both in scope and quantity. The robust rural popular culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries had come under increasing pressure from gentry and clerical attempts to reform and sanitise it, initially through evangelical organisations such as the Society for the Suppression of Vice in the 1790s, but by the 1840s on a broad front due to the middle-class vogue for promoting ‘rational recreation’. Partly as a result of this, many popular pastimes either fell into disuse or became emptied of much of their former spontaneity in the second half of the century, a commonly cited example of the former being cock-fighting and of the latter maypole-dancing. In their place came carefully marshalled dinners and prize-givings sponsored by the gentry and clergy. On these occasions the labourers (and sometimes their families too) were sat down at trestle tables in some appropriate venue, often the squire's park, and edifying speeches were made by representatives of local landed society. The role of the rural workforce in all this was entirely passive, except for one or two labourers who might be singled out to give a speech of gratitude to the presiding landowner for his beneficence, and the ritual ‘loyal toasts’.

Abstract:
For most historians, William Wilberforce is not immediately associated with the history of capital punishment, at least not beyond his occasional efforts to solicit mercy for individuals sentenced to death, and his distinctly subaltern role in the decisive early nineteenth century parliamentary debates over the abolition of the death penalty in England. Most scholars concern themselves with the first of the two “great objects” of which, in a diary entry for October 28, 1787, Wilberforce declared that “God Almighty has set before me … the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of manners.” That concern is easily justified: the abolition of the slave trade quickly became the central preoccupation of Wilberforce's public life, and its implications were of global significance. His second professed mission of 1787 onwards—to help launch and sustain the Society for Giving Effect to His Majesty's Proclamation against Vice and Immorality—has inspired a smaller, although no less rich, body of scholarship. Our broad perspective on Wilberforce's public life remains that which was first laid down half a century ago, and which has subsequently been reinforced by historians of gender such as Leonore Davidoff and Catherine Hall. Wilberforce and his associates are principally seen as the progenitors of nineteenth century moral earnestness and spiritual idealism, as well as the feminine ideal of “the Angel in the House.” They were, as Ford K. Brown suggested in 1961, the “Fathers of the Victorians.”

Abstract:
Islamic Sufism is considered a scientific and practical education of souls, a cure for diseases of the heart, a plantation of virtues, a rebellion of vices and a suppression of desires and a training in patience, contentment and obedience. In addition, it has had a great impact on strengthening spiritual ties between all cultural, social and tribal components. Sufism is also considered one of the most important characteristics in the religious field. This is due to the accumulation of educational assets in this field that have contributed very effectively to the formation of religious conscience and national social behavior, which cannot be erased or changed. Sunni Islamic Sufism is a practical, not theoretical, and therefore realistic, and this realism means taking into account the reality of the universe in terms of its reality. The Sufi’s observance of this realism makes him fully connected with the society in which he lives. On the other hand, the constant of Sunni Sufism works to consolidate the values of peace and social cohesion. Furthermore, the general experiences show us that men of Sufism who involve themselves in peace can more than others contribute to spreading and strengthening peace in their surroundings, just as Sufis believe in the reality of intellectual difference whether between persons or between nations and they deal in cooperation and acquaintance. This article aims to define the role of Sunni Sufism in establishing of the principle of social cohesion. It also shows the reality of Sunni Sufism, its interest in social justice and its focus on the principle of tolerance and the right to difference.

Abstract:
The 2020 election was a referendum on many pressing issues of the time. COVID-19, climate change, and civil unrest propelled Americans to the voting booth in unprecedented numbers, shattering previous turnout records for both previous Vice President Joe Biden and the incumbent Donald Trump. Biden and the Democratic Party field won, but narrowly. With the Democratic Party ostensibly holding only a slim majority in the House and the Vice Presidency as a tiebreaker in a dead-locked Senate, there have been large cries of a “stolen election” and “rampant voter fraud.” This has prompted several states, usually with Republican majorities, to pass sweeping restrictions on voting. Using both historical and contemporary lenses, this paper investigates the causes, effects, and motivations to curb voting accessibility and redistricting with an emphasis on red and swing states in the aftermath of the 2020 election, as well as potential solutions to combat the push to further restrict voting rights.

Abstract:
Nematic elastic bodies can develop a gradient of response to heat, light and other stimuli. They then bend and develop curvature in a complex manner. Using the results for a general weak response derived in the preceding paper, we solve for strong spontaneous distortion where bend in one direction causes stretch in another direction if that too is bending, and vice versa. Since stretch is elastically expensive, it can cause suppression of one of the bends (we determine which), thus eliminating Gaussian curvature. This is the spontaneous distortion equivalent of the classical Lamb calculation of the anti-clastic suppression when large distortions are imposed in classical elastica. In practice, spontaneously deforming nematic solids, e.g. in actuation, are in this strong bend limit.

Abstract:
The admissions cheating scandal illustrated how colleges and universities in the US depend upon and reinforce socio-economic privilege. The first part of this paper uses a Reformed Christian approach to moral virtue to analyze privilege in higher education as an ethical problem. Understanding privilege as moral vice clarifies the relationships between practices, attitudes, and intentions we associate with privilege. The second part of this paper contrasts ethical frameworks prominent in the discourse on higher education with a commitment to the common good. Within an ethics of the common good, privilege’s function as vice becomes clear, as does its deleterious effect on US higher education’s “original intent.” Ultimately, cultivation of a “character of inclusion” is the necessary antidote to the vice of privilege, to realign higher education with its historic responsibility to the common good of a just society.

Abstract:
Several studies have shown that blind humans can gather spatial information through echolocation. However, when localizing sound sources, the precedence effect suppresses spatial information of echoes, and thereby conflicts with effective echolocation. This study investigates the interaction of echolocation and echo suppression in terms of discrimination suppression in virtual acoustic space. In the ‘Listening’ experiment, sighted subjects discriminated between positions of a single sound source, the leading or the lagging of two sources, respectively. In the ‘Echolocation’ experiment, the sources were replaced by reflectors. Here, the same subjects evaluated echoes generated in real time from self-produced vocalizations and thereby discriminated between positions of a single reflector, the leading or the lagging of two reflectors, respectively. Two key results were observed. First, sighted subjects can learn to discriminate positions of reflective surfaces echo-acoustically with accuracy comparable to sound source discrimination. Second, in the Listening experiment, the presence of the leading source affected discrimination of lagging sources much more than vice versa. In the Echolocation experiment, however, the presence of both the lead and the lag strongly affected discrimination. These data show that the classically described asymmetry in the perception of leading and lagging sounds is strongly diminished in an echolocation task. Additional control experiments showed that the effect is owing to both the direct sound of the vocalization that precedes the echoes and owing to the fact that the subjects actively vocalize in the echolocation task.

Abstract:
1. Responses of 89 single olfactory bulb neurons from 43 channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, to amino acid odorants were recorded in vivo simultaneously with the electro-olfactogram (EOG). Recording time for individual neurons ranged from 16 to 344 min. The averaged spontaneous frequency ranged from x003C; 1 to 16 action potentials/s with a mean frequency of 5.2 +/- 3.6 (SD) action potentials/s. 2. Histological examinations of carbocyanine dye 1,1'diocadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI)-labeled olfactory bulbs and electrical stimulation of the olfactory tracts in a subset of experiments suggested that the majority of the recorded olfactory bulb neurons in this study were mitral cells. 3. Olfactory bulb neurons responded to amino acids with either an excitation or suppression of the background neural activity. Of the 337 stimulus applications, 28% of the responses were excitatory, and 33% were suppressive. The approximately 1:1 ratio of excitatory to suppressive responses for all stimulus applications suggests that suppressive responses also play important roles in the coding of odorant information in the channel catfish. 4. Responses of single olfactory bulb neurons were highly reproducible over time (up to 5 h). Responses to any amino acid never changed from excitation to suppression, or vice versa over time. 5. Single olfactory bulb neurons responded with excitation or suppression to more than one amino acid previously indicated to bind to independent receptors. 6. Estimated threshold concentrations for activation of an olfactory bulb neuron ranged from 10(-7) to 10(-3) M and were different from neuron to neuron for a particular stimulus and from stimulus to stimulus for a particular neuron. Responses of single olfactory bulb neurons to a given amino acid did not change from excitation to suppression, or vice versa, across different suprathreshold concentrations.

Abstract:
We consider the difficult problem of identification of independent causes from a mixture of them when these causes interfere with one another in a particular manner: those considered are visual inputs to a neural network system which are created by independent underlying causes which may occlude each other. The prototypical problem in this area is a mixture of horizontal and vertical bars in which each horizontal bar interferes with the representation of each vertical bar and vice versa. Previous researchers have developed artificial neural networks which can identify the individual causes; we seek to go further in that we create artificial neural networks which identify all the horizontal bars from only such a mixture. This task is a necessary precursor to the development of the concept of "horizontal" or "vertical".

Abstract:
Cyclist Lance Armstrong cheated his way to seven Tour de France ‘victories’. Such cheating is wrong because it harms society. To explain how that harm affects all of us, I use Aristotle's ideas of virtue ethics to argue that Armstrong, despite his charitable work, is not a virtuous person. Virtue is to some extent determined by society, so we need to be clear that Armstrong is not a person to emulate. A society which does not clearly disapprove of vice is less than it might otherwise be because a good society is one that encourages virtue in its citizens.

Abstract:
1. Temporary suppression of glycolysis by 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG)-long enough to abolish CA1 population spikes (PSs) and reduce field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) by two-thirds-is followed by a sustained rebound of EPSPs and PSs (both up by 70-150%). 2. Post 2-DG long-term potentiation (2-DG-LTP) is prevented by block of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors (NMDARs). Though 2-DG-LTP is normally expressed by other receptors, in presence of picrotoxin 2-DG causes similar LTP of NMDAR-mediated EPSPs. 3. Stimulation at 1 s-1 fully depotentiates 2-DG-LTP. 4. Unlike tetanic LTP, 2-DG-LTP is not pathway-specific, is not occluded by a preceding tetanic LTP (or vice versa) and is insensitive to block of NO synthesis. 5. Hypoglycemic states may have long-lasting after-effects on cerebral synaptic function.

Abstract:
London in the first half of the 19th century was a centre of scientific and medical interest. For example, the Royal Society, the Linnean Society, the Geological Society, the Chemical Society and the Royal Astronomical Society were all centred on Burlington House and, not far away, in Berner's Street was the Medical and Chirurgical Society, which in 1834 became the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society and later the Royal Society of Medicine. It was also in this period that Edward Meryon became a member of the latter society and subsequently a Council Member, Librarian and Vice-President. His research led to the clear identification for the first time of the disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy and he published his results in the Transactions of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society in 1852.

Abstract:
SummaryEvolutionary pressures exerted by parasites on the immune system, and vice versa, are surveyed from a speculative viewpoint. New information is presented about the possible channelling of suppression by MHC Class II genes in the mouse, where a novel pattern of dominant unresponsiveness mediated by H-2Abis described. In addition, the hypothesis is advanced that phosphatidyl–inositol anchorage on the surface of parasites may represent a novel evasion mechanism, in which the spread of the immune response by epitope linkage is inhibited by host phospholipase.

Abstract:
Abstract From the late sixteenth century until their expulsion in 1767, members of the Society of Jesus played an important role in the urban life of Spanish America and as administrators of frontier missions. This study examines the organization of the Society of Jesus in Spanish America in large provinces, as well as the different urban institutions such as colegios and frontier missions. It outlines the spiritual and educational activities in cities. The Jesuits supported the royal initiative to evangelize indigenous populations on the frontiers, and particularly the outcomes that did not always conform to expectations. One reason for this was the effects of diseases such as smallpox on the indigenous populations. Finally, it examines the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories. Some died before leaving the Americas or at sea. The majority reached Spain and were later shipped to exile in the Papal States.

Abstract:
Mr. Joe Biden quoting a saying from Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.), vows to lift the Muslim ban from day one in the Oval office. This study shows how the U.S. mainstream liberal and the conservative printed press gave Pakistan and Pakistani society coverage in the first year of Biden's Vice Presidency under President Obama when the U.S. military interests were high in the South Asian region. Employing thematic analysis with indexing theory, the study analyzes three leading U.S. dailies from January 2009 to January 2010. The study finds media frames, issues, and sources that confirm the practical implementation of indexing theory in American news reporting on crucial foreign policy issues. About Pakistan Muslim society, the U.S. media conclude that terrorism is in the “DNA” of Pakistani people, and militants will take over Pakistan and its nuclear bomb. This study adds to the indexing theory, propaganda, political, international, and strategic communication literature. Key Words: Islamic extremism, Sharia law, Pakistani nuclear bomb, al Qaeda, Vice President Joe Biden, American print media, War on Terror, Indexing, Liberal, Conservative.

Abstract:
Abstract The year of 2020 has been overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical workers throughout China have played critical roles in battling severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and saving lives. The whole of society has now fully realized the significance of medical workers and many began to think about medical education in China: How can we further improve medical education for the next generation of clinicians, medical scientists, nurses, public-health workers and administrators related to medical care, so that they are well prepared to meet societal needs for medical care in the ever-changing world? In this panel discussion, medical-education experts from several prominent medical schools in China gathered to discuss the reform and future development of China's medical education. Full text
Abstract:
The paper explores the extent to which Heads of Department and Pro-Vice Chancellors, or manager-academics, in UK universities are aware of and prepared for the so-called ‘risk society’. It draws on a research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council concerned with the management of UK universities and the extent of permeation within universities of recent ideologies about new practices for managing public services. Recent debates in social theory about the concept of a risk society and risk cultures, and how these might be applied to higher education, are considered. Key features of a rapidly changing environment for the conduct and management of academic work are also outlined. The focus and methodology of the ESRC research project are explained. Interview data from Head of Department and Pro-Vice Chancellors are then used to illustrate a range of responses to notions of risk made by manager-academics. Finally, the paper examines how the learning of manager-academics could be better supported, in order that post-holders can acquire the flexibility and reflexivity which living in a risk society and culture seems to demand.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines Bolivian vice president Álvaro García Linera’s use of concepts originating in the work of Antonio Gramsci and Bolivian sociologist René Zavaleta Mercado. Zavaleta’s concept of sociedad abigarrada (usually translated as ‘motley society’) has a history of misappropriation in which García Linera participates by articulating it with the related concept of the estado aparente to claim that the merely ‘apparent’ state which does not effectively represent the heterogeneous social reality of a country like Bolivia is abolished with the official establishment of the Plurinational State in 2009. This ideologeme of the Plurinational State as one that faithfully represents Bolivia’s abigarramiento is equated with the Gramscian stato integrale, which in Gramsci refers to the state proper plus civil society where these are thoroughly integrated to function as an organic whole (the modern capitalist nation-state). Beyond merely misusing the borrowed terms of this discursive operation, García Linera gives a prescriptive value to concepts developed for an analytical purpose to validate the existing regime.
