Jezierski, Rachael A. "The Glasgow Emancipation Society and the American Anti-Slavery Movement." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2641/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study reinterprets the history of the Glasgow Emancipation Society and its relationship to the American anti-slavery movement in the nineteenth century. It examines the role of economics, religion and reform, from Colonial times up to the US Civil War, in order to determine its influence on abolition locally and nationally. This thesis emphasizes the reformist tendencies of the Glasgow abolitionists and how this dynamic significantly influenced their adherence to the original American Anti-Slavery Society and William Lloyd Garrison. It questions the infallibility of the evangelical response to anti-slavery in Scotland, demonstrating how Scottish-American ecclesiastical ties, and the preservation of Protestant unity, often conflicted with abolitionist efforts in Glasgow. It also focuses on the true leaders of GES, persons often ignored in historical accounts concerning Scottish anti-slavery, which explains the motivation and rational behind the society’s zealous attitude and proactive policies. It argues that similar social, political and religious imperatives that affected the American movement likewise mirrored events in Scotland influencing Glaswegian anti-slavery. Lastly, it resurrects the legacy of the Glasgow Emancipation Society from its provincial role, showing it was, in fact, a leader in the British campaign against American slavery.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the ownership of the enslaved in the West Indies and Caribbean by British absentees on the eve of Emancipation, and explores the often contradictory representations of these metropolitan slave-owners in a society increasingly hostile to slavery, with particular focus on the compensation paid to slave-owners under the 1833 Abolition Act. It traces the debates about compensation in the context of both the conflict over slavery and the wider discussions of what constituted 'property'. Drawing on the records of the Slave Compensation Commission, and examining the largest 5000 awards claim-by-Claim, it seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of who in Britain owned slaves and who, in addition to the owners themselves, benefited from the £20 million compensation paid by the state, By analysing claims across Britain's West Indian and Caribbean colonies, the thesis highlights the role of modem capitalist investors, in addition to the traditional merchantconsignees for Jamaica who dominate much of the historiography. While confirming the important role of metropolitan merchants, it also identifies a distinctive rentier group of gentry slave-owners in Britain, who managed and transmitted 'slave-property' across genders and generations through the mechanisms traditionally utilised in the management of British landed property. These mercantile and rentier groups of large-scale slave-owners were disproportionately represented at both local and national level in political and social institutions, including Parliament where, the thesis argues, previous work has underestimated the number ofMPs linked to the slave economy, Finally, the thesis identifies numerous smaller-scale slave-owners in Britain (many of them women) and examines the language deployed and identities constructed by this group in pursuing their claims for slavecompensation, It concludes that slave-ownership was increasingly widespread but also increasingly 'thin' in Britain by the 1830s, and that many firms and families who received slave-compensation can still be found in Britain today.

Burroughs, Benjamin Edward. "Streaming media: audience and industry shifts in a networked society." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1833.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines streaming media both as a technological innovation and cultural practice that co-configures audience and industry. Strategies and tactics provide a theoretical framework for understanding streaming media. Streaming is theorized as a tactic; wherein audiences momentarily buck against the strategic logic of media conglomerates and copyright regimes. However, streaming, concomitantly, is an audience tactic and a strategic logic of an emergent streaming industry. This results in the blurring between first and third party and sanctioned and unsanctioned streaming. In this dissertation, I parse out what are the nascent streaming logics within this burgeoning industry and how they constitutively shape and re-shape audiences and traditional broadcasting logics. Five typologies of streaming serve as conceptual tools for deepening our understanding of streaming media and technology. The first is streaming as a recent technological advancement, divided into software and hardware categories. The second conceptual framework is a typology of streaming that divides streaming into first and third party sanctioned and unsanctioned streaming. The third is streaming as an emergent industry. The fourth is streaming as a discourse, and the final typology divides streaming based on geography as transnational streaming, national streaming, and diasporic streaming. All of these classifications lay the groundwork for the further conceptualization of this important and emergent socio-technical practice.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to propose and analyse the translation from English into Italian of the introduction and the first two chapters of A Society of Young Women. Opportunities of Place, Power and Reform in Saudi Arabia, an essay by the French sociologist and anthropologist Amélie Le Renard. This book was born after a ten - month fieldwork in Riad and concentrates on the emancipation of women in Saudi Arabia and their access to public spaces in a strictly segregated country. Le Renard’s aim is to demonstrate that Saudi women do not need to be saved from their possessive husbands and fathers since they are acquiring more and more authonomy and rights. The dissertation is composed of four chapters. The first chapter presents an overview of the translation theory, of the translation of essays and of the essay-specific translation strategies, it also analyses the characteristics of the ethonographic essay and of the ethnographic method. The second chapter analyses the main themes of A Society of Young Women, its stylistic and lexical characteristics and presents an overview of Islam. The second part of this chapter describes Manal al-Sharif’s point of view on the condition of Saudi girls and offers the history of female emancipation in Saudi Arabia from the era of the oil boom. The third chapter contains the translation of the book. The fourth chapter presents a systematic comment to the translation with practical examples on culture-specific items, lexicon and syntax with reference to theoretical studies. In the appendix readers will find the three selected chapters of the source text

Abstract: This thesis is about the artistic, social-educational processes created and developed by Augusto Boal and their extensions to the ?Teatro do Oprimido?. At first, it is presented Boal's life trajectory in order to contextualize his production. Next, it is discussed not only the characteristics and properties of the construction of the Brazilian theater representation that happened with Boal in the ?Teatro de Arena?, but also the social educational artistic action resulting, characterized as a new political culture. There were bibliographic, biographic and documental searches; furthermore, narrative interviews for composing the life story of four Jokers - artist: practitioner, learner and researcher of the Method; specialist of the learning process - and a case studied at ?Ponto Educandário de Cultura?, located at the West side of São Paulo, Capital city. The methodological option showed the structures of the feeling that materialized the several productions observed and analyzed. Field research reveals the existence of artistic social educational processes with non-formal learning and knowledge for autonomy, against oppression and to form the subjects who have appropriated the tools of the cultural production in the theater. Amid the main conclusions stand out: among practitioners of Boal's theater ideas, acting as inserts in the political culture of a certain territory and knowing the existing social movements, there are intentional processes of non-formal education for citizenship and for freedom. That means, the possibility of those practitioners to overcome from the condition of oppressed to producers of subjectivity and new identities, being able to appropriate themselves the cultural production for benefit of their own emancipation. The perspective was that the ones formed on such processes could be the subjects of important and significant changes, understood and accepted the condition that it is not education that changes the world: education changes the persons who change the world if there is intention and objective conditions.

Authentic approaches to design education are typically defined as experiences centered on industry involvement. This industry connection is commonly either in the form of projects provided by industry partners or practicing engineers that serve as mentors to students. After exploring the goals and current practices of design education, this dissertation proposes an expanded definition of authentic design education: any design project with impact beyond the classroom environment that encourages the development of a student's self-identity as an engineer. To investigate the potential benefits afforded by an expanded definition of authentic design, a new design class was developed, taught, and evaluated across four years. The class, entitled Design for the Wilderness, was developed with a focus on projects that have impact beyond the classroom environment. Students were required to design and build products that they relied on while traveling in remote wilderness environments.
These impactful projects required students to experience the results of their design decisions. Building on our experiences implementing Design for the Wilderness, a curricular approach of Design for Use is introduced that requires students to use products developed by their peers. Design for Use helps increase students' understanding of human-centered design principles by encouraging students to confront the interplay between their intentions when designing a product and their experiences when failing to understand the intentions behind products designed by their peers. This dissertation also considers a mechanical engineering capstone design class (MIT's 2.009). An interesting outcome of this class is that some teams continue to work on commercializing their products after the semester ends. Team characteristics most strongly correlated with persisting on product development beyond the end of the class are related to healthy team dynamics and a positive social environment.
Teams that persisted spent more of their time working together, had fewer teammates that worked significantly more or less than the team average, and spent more of their time simply "hanging out" in lab. Drawing on our findings from investigating multiple approaches to authentic design education, recommendations are made for the future development of effective engineering design classes.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D. in History and Social Study of Science and Technology (HASTS))--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Science, Technology and Society, 2005.

This dissertation focuses on the pursuits of a particular subset of automobile users: hot rodders, those who modify their standard production automobiles for improved performance. More specifically, this project examines the history of the speed equipment industry - the aftermarket subsector which manufactures high-performance products for hot rodders - from its infancy in the 1910s through the mid 1980s. The thesis begins by examining the role of technological enthusiasm in the early growth of hot rodding, focusing in particular on the ways in which this enthusiasm led a handful of individuals to begin to manufacture high-performance parts in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. After tracing the wartime experiences of these industry pioneers, the project then explores the ways in which, in the midst of America's postwar affluence, the spectacular growth both of the high-performance industry and of hot rodding itself helped spawn the youth-oriented musclecar movement upon which the Big Three would later feed. In its examination of the 1940s and 1950s, the dissertation closely examines the evolution of this industry's production methods in an attempt to understand the manufacturing dynamics of a market-sensitive, flexibly-oriented, late-twentieth-century industrial sector.
(cont.) The thesis then explores the ways in which this industry dealt with automotive safety and environmental legislation in the 1960s and 1970s. It concludes with a discussion of the fragmentation of the hot rod market during the 1970s and 1980s, analyzing the manufacturing and marketing challenges this change has wrought. This project sheds new light on the history of the automobile in America in four main ways. It highlights the survival of a flexibly-oriented, consumer-driven automotive industry in the shadow of the Big Three. It emphasizes the lingering importance of technological enthusiasm in the evolution of automobility. It uses the experience of the speed equipment industry to reexamine and revise our understanding of the relationship between the Big Three and governmental regulators. And, finally, it challenges the longstanding notion that the automobile had become a 'black box' by the 1920s, documenting the extent to which the social constructivists' 'end-user interpretive flexibility' has instead remained quite strong throughout the history of the automobile.

This work aims to provide a widely applicable modeling framework that can be used to credibly investigate materials scarcity risks for various types of commodities. Different from existing literature, this work contributes to a better understanding of commodity scarcity risk, specifically copper future consumption on several fronts. Firstly, it introduces an elaborate price mechanism absent in comparable materials flow assessment. It teases out short term and long term substitution, allowing consumers to switch from one type of commodity to another based on price signals and their respective price elasticities of demand. Secondly, the model allows for individual deposit tracking, which allows the modeler to extract ore grade information as a function of consumption and reserve size. Thirdly, it models the supply side on an agent-based basis, allowing for aggregation of granular information, capturing potential emergent phenomena. We believe these three aspects, which are least addressed (none of existing work has addressed the first aspect, and few have addressed the second or the third), are important in assessing scarcity risks. Without them, scarcity assessment is likely to be biased. We hope our work may serve as some sort of foundation upon which more reliable future work on mineral scarcity evaluation can be carried out.

This thesis is about the emancipation and development of pedagogical vision Domingos Sarmiento. Therefore, I tried to understand the Sarmiento’s vision about education, through the works of him, as well as the relationship of this with the economic development of Argentina. This study is relevant because recently it was celebrated the bicentennial of Latin American independence. In this way, it is important to understand the process by which the young Nations have passed and the solutions sought for the social and economic problems. The methodology of this study was documentary research about Sarmiento’s studies. Because of this, I could understand the concepts of emancipation and barbarism within the author's ideas. For Sarmiento, the education had a central role in the development of a prosperous society. Moreover, the understanding of the development process, which relates to education, also has relation with other important factors such as the folwark, women and the native. Through research, I checked how this relationship perpetuates and reflections which features in the construction of a new model of society, different in some aspects of that society thought by Sarmiento and at the same time similar in other aspects.

This paper intend to explicit, among main works of Gianni Vattimo, the possibilities, in the Post-Modernity, of thinking a emancipation; maybe not that emancipation of Modernity, whose basis was progress, reason, science. Maybe in Post-Modernity we have an emancipatory project that conceives only a âtaking the wordâ of cultures and subcultures renegade by traditional historical process, that was centered in only one ideal: European modern human. Thus, we can talk about how History, while current unitary, came to an end. The reflections from the end of this unity of history are visible in various forms in the present culture; however, the overall process of aestheticization of life certainly means, more evident, the value pluralist today. The general aestheticization of life is not so much âsuper-aestheticsâ, a unique aesthetics that encompasses all the meaning and values, but a multiplicity of aesthetics values, the most varied, that travel the world through sounds and images as objects of information. Hence some relevance characteristic of mass media: apart from a totalitarian cultural component type-approval, the media represent â despite still abide to certain interests of market â a form of mediation between the different cultural âdialecticsâ, providing a true âadventure of differenceâ.

Abstract:
This study aims at identifying to what extent state schools, within the context of the contemporary crisis, may be regarded as a space of social emancipation. To such an effect, we sought potential emancipative manifestations in the school curriculum of three state schools located in the peripheral areas in three different regions in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. At first, we attempted to locate the work around characteristics and developments of the relationship between society, education and curriculum by emphasising the Brazilian context and underlining the importance of school. The articulation between education and emancipation is based on the preliminary idea of "being a subject", which will be qualified in the course of this dissertation. The data were collect by means of documents portraying school life (political-pedagogical projects, meeting minutes, regulations, statutes), observations, and interviews. There were 53 interviews, as well as informal dialogues attempting to note how players such as teachers, students and parents perceive school and education. In parallel, we looked for information with city governments so as to be able to access the legal and formal instruments guiding municipal education. In the analysis made about the schools, we highlighted how each pedagogical proposal is conceived and experienced; what characterises the management and role of school as well as the conception and materialisation of the school curriculum; the conceptions and proceedings related to evaluation; social relationships in school; and the relationship of each one with the funding institution. On the other hand, we have found a singular space to consider the obstacles and potentialities of teaching. Based on these categories, we identified how the tensions experienced and equated within the teaching process reinforce the reproduction of systemic social relationships or constitute real and potential signals of an emancipative curriculum. On the other hand, we highlighted that this tension results from lack of school success based on other value criteria beyond the hegemony of cognitive criteria. That is, we maintained that an emancipative curriculum results from building a balance between cognitive, political and aesthetical branches so as for students in school not to be seen only by what they know, but also by whether they know who they are and what they need to improve their objective and subjective standards of living. In this view, emancipation should be thought not only as a way to resist adverse social realities, but above all as protection and socialisation contexts from which alternative social relationships and practices may emerge in comparison to the current societal dynamics. In this auditorium, state schools may have their importance reinforced, or at least reinvigorated.

Due to industrial development and technological innovation, many problems arise from the increasing number of electronics devices that need to be managed at end of life. The two main market failures related to waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are economic loss and environmental externalities. Incomplete recovery of materials in waste mobile phones results in a great amount of economic loss. Many studies aim to improve the situation by characterizing metals within printed circuit boards (PCBs). My work focuses on the evolving composition and the flow of materials located outside of PCBs. I have discovered significant economic potential of non-PCB metals, and provide suggestions for optimization of different preprocessing steps. I recommend that preprocessors pay special attention to precious metals in fine shredding. And I have also provided strategies for plastics recycling by forecasting the demand and supply of it in Portugal. Besides opportunities for addressing environmental impact in the end-of-life stage of electronics products, there are also opportunities in other life cycle stages such as GHG savings by the enablement of semiconductors in the use stage. I identify six areas of GHG savings and provide insights for more informed policy to better evaluate the influence of technologies in the electronics industry.

The cost of waste for products such as soft drinks, shelf stable dry food, and dairy in the consumer packaged goods industry is massive, about $15 billion annually in the U.S.A. This thesis focuses on waste associated with product expiration since this type of waste involves both manufacturers and retailers as well as different functional areas such as production, warehousing, sales, procurement, and store operations. As a result, the industry has not made much progress in reducing this type of waste. We study three problems related to product expiration. Chapter 2 presents a descriptive study examining the root causes of product expiration and their impact on expiration. Using econometrics and our collaborator's data, we find that the amount of expiration can be reduced considerably via a case size reduction. We identify the next important opportunities in the areas of inventory aging in the manufacturer's supply chain and sales incentives, and thus the remainder of this thesis focuses on these two areas. Chapter 3 examines the manufacturer's sell-or-dispose decision for aged inventory. We develop an optimization model to find the minimum remaining shelf life below which the manufacturer does not sell the product since the cost of expiration is more than the sunk cost of production. We use machine learning to approximate optimum values which can be used as a low cost alternative method. If supply chain managers are held accountable for the cost of disposed items, they will have an incentive to better manage inventory. As a result, expiration will be reduced. Chapter 4 analyses sales-force compensation schemes from the perspective of product expiration caused by overselling. We develop a game theoretic model of the decision process of the manufacturer and the sales representative. We find a compensation scheme that aligns the interests of the manufacturer and the sales representative preventing overselling while achieving full profit potential for the manufacturer.

The migration of news to the web has given advertisers new opportunities to target readers with ever more personal and engaging ads. This sponsored content, known as native advertising, is placed in news publications often camouflaged as legitimate news. Though native ads bring revenue to the struggling U.S. news industry, their ability to draw loyal readers off-site could hurt publishers in the long run. Herein, I measure the quality and the impact of the ads from Content Recommendation Networks (CRN) on the U.S. news industry, between March 2016 and February 2019. A CRN controls both the third-party ads and the house ads -- recommendations for news articles from the host publisher -- on a news publisher's website. During the 2016 presidential election, I found that 17% of ad headlines were political, and 67% of the stories were clickbait. Over the 2018 midterm elections, 15% of the ads were political, and 73% were clickbait. While third-party ads are more clickbait than house ads, the increase in clickbait between 2016 and 2018 is larger for the house ads. Further, I investigate the effect that a one-time exposure to these ads have on the perceived credibility on news articles. Four publishers were under study: CNN, Fox News, The Atlantic and Sacramento Bee. A one-time exposure to CRN ads was found to have no signicant eect on the credibility of traditional publishers. Yet, the CRN ads impacted the credibility of less well-known publishers: ads increased the credibility of the news on Sacramento Bee, and decreased it on The Atlantic.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a reinterpretation of the activities of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, an economic society founded in London in 1754. Previous histories of the Society have attempted to accommodate it within normative accounts of industrial development; or have celebrated its philanthropic intentions; or have focused on one aspect of its multifarious activities. I argue that the Society should be interpreted as a place where a wide-ranging public ethos and the promotion of public knowledge were meant to coexist. This meant a collision between an ethos of gentlemanly many-mindedness and the particular interests of individual trades, fraught negotiations about the question of the public, and involvement in practices of natural knowledge which were intended to render tacit knowledge explicit. How far any of this activity actually encouraged manufactures or commerce is debatable: nevertheless, the Society offers a vantage point from which we can see the difficulty of coordinating and aggregating local exemplary achievements and inventions. Individual chapters consider the Society's efforts in the fields of mechanics, import substitution, agriculture, and tree planting.

The International Energy Agency estimates $331 billion dollars will be invested over the next 12 years to provide energy access to the 1.1 billion people who currently lack access to reliable electricity service. Of the $331 billion, the IEA estimates that 34% of this capital will be directed towards minigrid systems. In line with these capital estimates, governments in many countries with low levels of electricity service are undertaking significant capital expenditures in order to expand the existing electricity infrastructure. However, this capital is limited and will not be sufficient to provide universal access. One proposed solution to overcome limited government budgets and capacity is to allow off-grid and minigrid services in areas which will not be reached by government-led programs. This thesis utilizes a computer-based simulation model to explore how minigrid developers respond to commercial, industrial, and residential customers and the type of service these minigrid developers may choose to provide to these customers. The effect of government policies and subsidies is incorporated into the developed simulation model to judge the effect of these policies on firm behavior. The simulation results find that if governments are to prioritize universal access to rural households, specific policy measures must be put in place to encourage minigrid developers to provide service to low-income consumers.

Abstract:
This research aims to think about the youths in the contemporary society. From questions such as "who are the youths?" and "what brings them to theatre, as actors or spectators?", the present dissertation makes the effort and tries to uncover and comprehend the relations between the youths (actors, students or spectators) and theatre. Therefore I employed the most diverse theoretical references (specially: PAIS and BOAL) supported by a methodology and analysis based in authors proceeded from the Frankfurt School (ADORNO and HORKHEIMER). They, in turn, allowed a critical viewpoint about the cultural industry and the possibility indicated by the constitution of emancipation and autonomy. In such case, observations and interviews have been done with the youths who are inserted in the theatrical surroundings. The analysis have been done, thus, based in the registered empirical material through the theoretical roll earlier described. More than answers, this work angles to evoke questions from the significant discourse of the youths concerning theatre, considering the society in which we are inserted.

Abstract:
The institutions on which this project focuses are state institutions, namely, the organisation of power of the state and the governing regime and social institutions, namely the shared social meanings and perceptions. The main research question is how such state-society relations impact on the development trajectory of the IT industry of a place. It introduces a combined use of the historical and sociological institutional approaches to analyse the findings from two empirical case studies, namely, the development of the IT industry of Hong Kong and Singapore. These two city-states are chosen owing to their similarities in cultural and colonial backgrounds and their stark differences in political and social institutions.106 in-depth interviews with IT policy makers, firm owners, practitioners and other important IT players have been conducted in Hong Kong and Singapore in order to gauge the interaction between institutions and actors in the state and society. My case studies illustrate how social and state actors respond to the state and social institutions; and illuminates how such responses can affect their attitudes at work. The findings of these case studies suggest these actors’ attitudes can directly impact on the making of IT policy and influence the development path of the IT industry. This dissertation proposes the following argument. State institutions can directly determine the state autonomy and capacity to reallocate financial and human resources in industrial development and the effectiveness of the IT industrial policy. These state institutions also engender certain kinds of social institutional environments and shape the nature of the state-society relations. Such state-society relations influence actors’ innovative behaviour at work which ultimately conditions the development trajectory of the IT industry of a place.

Abstract:
Sustainability is one of the mega trends that is emerging nowadays. It is built on protecting our planet and its resources. Agenda 2030 is a universal call to action, which demonstrates the significance of moving towards sustainability in three different areas of environmental, social, and economic at the international level. One of the focal points of environmental sustainability deals with climate change due to using fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Sweden aims to be one of the world’s first fossil-free nations, and its initiative Fossil Free Sweden offers roadmaps in different sectors to accomplish this goal. Growing the service business through using digital technologies is a strategy many companies tend to in the fast-changing world. Although it potentially leads to competitive advantage and enhancing revenues, it is a challenging situation, particularly for industrial firms. This study seeks to consider a more holistic view regarding the transition that companies need to take by 2030 in pursuing digital servitization and at the same time becoming fossil fuel free. Surviving the transition can not happen without revising business models and exploring new business opportunities. To address this issue, an explorative case study is performed in a manufacturing company in the construction equipment industry to collect, analyze and frame the existing knowledge in digital servitization and business model, moreover, to identify the factors that industrial firms should consider in improving their service business in the transition towards fossil-free society. To do so, 1) a set of coproduction sessions are held in the case company with advanced engineering and researchers, 2) as well an online survey is distributed inside the case company, to collect valuable knowledge and practical insight. The outcome of the research is a framework that can be used as a practical guide to support firms in the transition towards digital servitization and help them to figure out their current position in case of offerings and business models and plan for the next steps and new opportunities. In addition, six important factors with their sub-factors are offered accompanied by six general guidelines that firms should consider in their journey towards the transition.

Murray, Nicole Anne. "Who gets their hands 'dirty' in the knowledge society? Training for the skilled trades in New Zealand." Lincoln University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1714.

Full text
Abstract:
The vision of New Zealand as a 'knowledge society' is a mantra that has opened the twenty-first century. Underpinning any 'knowledge society', however; are people who turn resources into concrete products and who build, maintain and service the technological and social infrastructure essential to society. This thesis examines the skilled trades and, in particular, how people are trained for those trades. Industry training is a crucial component of the wealth-generating capabilities of New Zealand. It is also an essential part of the way that many young people make the transition from school to work and from adolescence to adulthood. The means of training tradespeople has moved over the years from the rigid and prescriptive apprenticeship system, to the more voluntaristic, industry-led 'industry training' strategy, introduced following the Industry Training Act 1992. Regardless of the system used to organise training, however, there have been long-standing problems in New Zealand with achieving the optimum number of skilled workers, possessing the correct 'mix' of skills required. In this research, based upon semi-structured interviews with industry training stakeholders four industry case studies, policy content analysis and an in-depth examination of the Modem Apprenticeships scheme, I ask three key questions. First, what are the things that, as a country, we could or should reasonably expect a 'good' industry training system to contribute to? These may be things like: an adequate supply of appropriately skilled workers, the ability to upskill or reskill these workers as needed, clear transition routes for young people, lifelong learning opportunities, equity goals and foundation skills. Second, I ask how the current system performs against these criteria. The short answer is that the performance is 'patchy'. There are dire skill shortages in many areas. While opportunities for workplace upskilling, reskilling or 'lifelong learning' are available, I argue that they are not yet cemented into a 'training culture'. Workplace-based learning is an important transition route for a small percentage of our young people but the favoured route is some form of tertiary education, which may be an expensive and not necessarily relevant option. Third, I ask why the performance of New Zealand's industry training system is often less than desirable. My argument is that the problems and solutions thereof, of skill formation in New Zealand have been understood largely in terms of the supply-side. That is, we have either critiqued, or looked to reform, whatever system has been in place to train skilled workers. The inadequacy of this approach is evident from weaknesses in the ability of either the prescriptive apprenticeship system or the voluntaristic industry training strategy to deliver an appropriately skilled workforce. Thus, I also examine the demand side of skill formation: the wider influences that impact on employers' training decisions. Training decisions made by individual employers, the aggregation of which represent the level and quality of training for New Zealand as a whole, are influenced by a plethora of factors. At the micro level of the employer or firm, I explore barriers to training and some of the constraints to the demand for skills. I then examine broader influences, such as the changing shape of the workforce, labour market regulation and wider economic factors, all of which impact on training levels.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the process of development of Swansea from Norman planted town, with a market and a harbour, to an industrial centre and port of international significance. It will consider the impact of industrial and commercial growth on the infra structure of the medieval settlement, and the pressures and stresses on life in the town arising out of the influx of a largely Welsh-speaking body of immigrants in search of work. It is argued that Swansea was special in the Welsh urban context, because of the strategies it was forced to develop at the end of the eighteenth century to cope with enforced change, and also because of its multifunctional nature. Additionally, the town is of considerable interest because of the presence of two apparently conflicting functions - industry and resort - the interaction between which may illuminate the relative importance of each. These issues are approached in this thesis as follows. First, an attempt is made at estimating the rate of growth of the population of Swansea from about 1700 (the consequence of economic and industrial development) and the proportion and provenance of immigrants. Secondly, the motivation of those leaving the land and the difficulties awaiting them in a Swansea ill-equipped to receive them are examined, as are the strategies adopted by the town to assimilate them. Next, the incidence of disease and causes of death in conditions of urban overcrowding, or food shortage, are investigated. Lastly, a modest evaluation of the appearance and economy of the town, and its marketing strategy, is attempted through an examination of contemporary plans, pictures, topographies and trade directories and these sources are considered in the wider context of an emerging consciousness during the eighteenth century of the culture, language and history of Wales.

Abstract:
When developing this thesis the main goal was to see how corporations impact society through new legislations giving them the right to act as individuals or humans. Gradually examining the impact on humans through CSR with analysis on how the implementation of CSR affects the performance of the business. A more theoretical approach is taken since Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Personhood are hard to classify since interpretation is dependent on individuals and cultures implemented within. The approach taken was to examine two cases including Enron and British Petroleum and see how their social practices affected society and the environment in general. Also the examination of research done from others was analyzed in order to find whether there was a correlation between CSR and the performance of the firm. The results concluded that there is a positive correlation between corporations implementing CSR initiatives and the overall performance of the business. It is also seen that businesses implement CSR to offset negative impacts. This supports the outcome of Enron and British Petroleum that if CSR would have been implemented correctly there is a great chance of success for the future. In overview it shows that for a corporation to improve it is success and become more competitive within the industry it is best to implement CSR tools in the correct way to create a competitive advantage. Reinforcing that being transparent and true will help the business succeed.

This thesis looks at how copyright laws are used in the home console Gaming industry and, in particular, how these laws are used to capture the returns from Investment .Which can indirectly provide a stimulus to innovation. The relationship is evaluated in two selected markets: the United States (USA), the European Union. This thesis assesses this relationship through a unique approach, adopting both a legal approach and economic analysis. The thesis begins with a detailed analysis of the market for this industry to identify the key factors affecting the ability of individual businesses to return on investment.Next come Section II which continues to examine the effects of copyright on these factors in the developed markets of the United States and Europe. It's the view of this thesis that copyright laws can theoretically be used to maximize the performance of a business investment without distorting competition; therefore, the thesis suggests that IPRs indirectly, it can create incentives to innovate.

Abstract:
Background: Several crises have passed and today, the world is witnessing the pandemic Covid-19. As a consequence, society is affected at large where new insights and attitudes are born. Existing literature suggests that a crisis may be a crucial determinant in shaping one’s attitudes and actions, and therefore marketing needs to adapt to these new attitudes and expectations. Involving consumers' perception of this issue, together with companies’ views within the industry, lies the foundation for this research to investigate any changing consumer attitudes towards the airline industry during Covid-19. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how consumer attitudes have changed within the airline industry in Sweden due to the Covid-19 pandemic, applying both consumers’ and companies’ perspectives to provide managerial implications for marketers. Method: With an interpretive nature, the study is qualitative added by quantitative measures, hence stated as multi-method. Primary data is collected through an analytical survey and four semi-structured interviews.  Findings: Investigating attitudes from economic, social and environmental perspectives, the study concludes that consumer attitudes have changed in several perspectives while some attitudes stay consistent with pre-crisis attitudes, hence not directly affected by the crisis. The empirical findings are coherent with the conceptual framework, explaining the complexity of the tourism airline industry and how new attitudes that arise from the Covid-19 pandemic is a predictor of future behavior during the crisis, which may be useful for future crises to come.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the case of Barrow-in-Furness through the period of the First World War. As a town dominated by one of the UK’s most important armaments firms, Vickers, Barrow experienced the full force of industrial mobilisation and government intervention. In analysing the responses to these events, the thesis provides insights into their impact on a town and population dependent on industries stimulated by war. Barrow had special problems arising from its geographical isolation and large munitions population. Vickers, the work force and the town at large were used to negotiating their own difficulties, but these were severely tested by the impact of war. Industrial relations in a heavily unionised but strategically important town were complicated by the different positions of Vickers, unions, shop stewards, rival government agencies, and the role of women, yet ultimately all parties found ways of working together. The knock-on effects of the war on industry were extensive and far reaching. The life of the town was intimately bound up with the war industry and the changes in war requirements ultimately affected its population through housing, health and welfare and the need for utilities and transport. Addressing these difficulties posed some of the greatest problems. Political implications of wartime in a working-class town led to a split in the Labour Party and ultimately the return of a Tory in 1919. While historians have considered how the nation met the demands of the war, a focus on the regionality of the home front highlights more precisely the impact on specific places and how the war effort was sustained in practice. The experience of the town of Barrow throughout the period of the First World War is therefore invaluable for demonstrating the complexity and inter-relatedness of how the war affected people, industry and infrastructure on the home front.

Abstract:
The thought philosophic and politic of Marx can be appropriate qualified as defensor of effective human-social emancipation and of democracy. Specially in the period of 1843-48, Marx formulates a set of ideas, arguments, thesis, propositions, with the aim refuting concepts and practices that puts against to human emancipation. For Marx, the theories should be elaborated with base in a critical analyse of material reality in that the man lives. Adopting this criterion, he denounces the creed in the State as sphere that realises the common interest of the being, that the State is the partial power of the bourgeois class, therefore essential antidemocratic, it is inapt to offer conditions for the effect of liberty and equality, what he comprehends as theoretic and pratical principles that the denominates âuniversal human emancipationâ and ârealâ and âtrue democracyâ. Second Marx, when it is not enought, the State is allied of bourgeois private property, that in conformity to his valuation is the main material objetion to the human emancipation and democracy, that he advocates. According to Marx, the private property manages to the man does not recognise the work as activity that engenders the social life. The work while activity strange, that is, work under the private property rules, impedes the person to work freeand conscious, so to recognise as social being. Against to this situation, Marx proporse a radical (social) revolution, with the purpose to liberate the man. Such revolution, initial, consist in a human conscientiouness or explanation, so a kind of theoretical emancipation, that impels to act, in an revolutionary way to abolis hall barriers to the concretion of human autonomy. In conformity to Marx, the final objective of the revolution is to establish the necessary conditions to the advent of communist society as place of effective human emancipation and radical democracy, direct.

Abstract:

I investigate the relationship between local government-industry linkages and pollution outcomes in Chinese cities over the period 2003 to 2010. For identification, I rely on the administrative rotation of city mayors, which is determined by political career considerations and retirement age cut-offs but unrelated to their environmental records. These transitions act as plausibly exogenous shocks that disrupt the relationship between the local government and enterprises at the city level. I employ several statistical models to investigate the leadership's impacts on environmental outcomes. First, a simple t-test is used to evaluate the change in the pollution index when mayors with particular characteristics enter or leave office. In addition, empirical models are utilized to explore the correlation between mayoral characteristics and changes in city-level pollution. I find correlations between mayoral characteristics and city-level environmental outcomes, focusing specifically on SO₂ emissions, SO₂ emission intensities, and end-of-pipe SO₂ removal ratios. Finally, firm-level data allow me to identify the relationship between mayoral characteristics and pollution by enterprises of specific ownership types. Mayors with different characteristics show distinct impacts on city-level pollution. I hypothesize that city leaders who have previous experience in industry pay more attention to local economic growth rather than environmental improvements, resulting in increased SO₂ emissions. Consistent with this hypothesis, I find that mayors with industry work background correspond to an increase (decrease) in city-level SO₂ emissions when they enter (leave) office after controlling for city and year fixed effects. Apart from this, I expect that leaders closer to retirement are under less pressure for promotion as they are going to retire soon and due to age cut-offs may not be eligible for higher positions; instead, they may feel less pressure to promote local businesses and pay more attention to environmental management. Evidence shows consistently that tenures of mayors on the verge of retirement are associated with reductions in city-level SO₂ emissions and increases in city-level end-of-pipe SO₂ removal rates. Further investigation shows that mayors realize their environmental goals via enterprises of specific ownership types. I predict that mayors rotated from the central government are not under pressure of promotion and they are adherent to the central policy in reducing SO₂ emission intensities. I further predict that mayors from the local administration are expected to enforce the usage of SO₂ removal facilities, particularly among enterprises of low level authorities. Consistent with these hypotheses, results show that mayors with work background in central and local governments are associated with improved environmental outcomes, but through different channels. A central government work background results in intensity reduction, but not necessarily SO₂ emissions; however, local government work background is associated with short-term reductions in SO₂ intensities, possibly due to increases in SO₂ removal ratios, particularly among city SOEs. In addition to the analysis of mayoral characteristics, my research reveals several additional interesting findings. I find that enterprises of lower rank more readily build linkages with local officials not only for economic development but also for environmental management as high-ranking enterprises may face a more stringent monitoring system and are more politically powerful. Implications for environmental policy design in China can be drawn from the results. First, industries are encouraged to behave independently from the government in economic activities as well as policy implementation. Second, environmental performance should be effectively and explicitly included in the evaluation program of officials. Third, government-industry linkages, to the extent that they undermine the economic and policy system, should be minimized as much as possible.

Abstract:
There is a growing body of research demonstrating the effects of age-related changes on product usability and the value derived from consumption experiences. In particular, difficulties with packaging have been identified as a source of dissatisfaction and a key barrier to older people maintaining their independence. Despite this, marketing literature into older consumers’ packaging experiences is limited. Likewise, packaging development has been afforded scant attention in the new product development literature. Whilst there is extensive design literature exploring packaging openability among older consumers, these studies focus largely on biological ageing, thus overlooking aspects of psychological and social ageing. As such, these studies only capture a small part of the various consumer-packaging interactions. Based on these limitations, the purpose of this study is twofold: to explore how ageing affects packaging needs; and to examine how the management of packaging development affects firms’ abilities to deliver value to older consumers. The findings highlight the importance of packaging development in contributing to older people’s abilities to access, open and consume fast-moving consumer goods products independently. Maintaining this independence is found to positively contribute to quality of life. However, a variety of organisational factors and development team characteristics are found to inhibit firms from targeting older consumers and identifying and exploiting a variety of new packaging opportunities. This study contributes to the literature by providing new insights into the packaging needs of older consumers. The conceptual framework presented contributes to new product development literature by providing a new perspective with which to view fast-moving consumer goods product development; one where packaging development is used to offer value to older consumers.

Abstract:
Background Understanding the benefits from the environment of municipally-owned energy firms in Sweden, through the perspective of the network theory, the triple helix model and knowledge transfer. Aim To construct a model describing the resources flowing within the network of relationships within the specific context of operations. Methodology The study is centred on a case company where two specific departments are put in focus: the energy recovery department and the business development. The case study aims to be descriptive, according to the data collected from interviews of relevant respondents. Findings - The benefits derived from a collaboration with a knowledge centre is the legitimate creation of exploitable innovation for the firm, as well as the creation/improvement of hybrid platforms where mobility of personnel is seen as a central communication factor. - When it comes to the income generating activities the main benefits that arose within the collaboration was the creation of opportunities for growth and business networks as such.- Power on influencing the context generates policies and favourable network oriented circumstances.

Abstract:
During the nineteenth century, the Gulf of Mexico fostered the movement of people, ideas, and news throughout the surrounding regions. Although each colony and state surrounding the basin had distinct cultures and traditions, they shared the legacy of slavery and emancipation. This study examines the transformation of labor that occurred for sugar planters in British Guiana and southern Louisiana during the age of emancipation. In this comparative project, I argue that in the 1830s planters from the British West Indies set the trajectory for solutions to the labor problem by curtailing the freedom of former slaves with Asian contract labor. Those in the sugar parishes of southern Louisiana followed this same framework in the 1860s yet it led to different outcomes. The nature of the circum-Caribbean provided opportunities for planters throughout the Gulf to observe the Asian indentured system and use a form of it in their distinct societies.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The achievement of sustainable development requires the balanced interaction between three components: the economy, environment, and society. Finding this balance in practice requires a critical examination of the beliefs, systems, and institutions that govern decisionmaking. Achieving sustainable development in reality thus involves understanding the existing forms of power in a particular time and place – what they are, how they operate, and how they influence decisions for development. This study is an analysis of power in a specific case study: the Hout Bay harbour in Cape Town, South Africa. Economic activities were driven by the fishing industry, in particular Oceana, who operated and maintained a fishmeal factory in the harbour since 1958. While the factory provided employment for the local coloured residents of Hangberg, it also produced noxious odours and air pollution, leading to significant discontent from other sectors of Hout Bay. A local and largely white activist group, Fresh Air for Hout Bay (FAHB), challenged these operations on the basis of sustainability and this became a highly contested issue. After years of debate and tension, the factory would eventually close in 2019, marking the end of an era for the fishing industry in Hout Bay. The purpose of this study is to analyse the power dynamics in Hout Bay and determine how these influenced the decisions around the factory. To do this, a qualitative autoethnographic study was conducted using semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentary review. The power analysis found that those in power, particularly the City of Cape Town and
