Liu, Chaoqun. "Politics between public and private : land ownership transfer in socialist Beijing (1950s - 1970s)." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11206/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research concerns the relations and tensions among the state as an institutional public power, the people congregating as a collective, and private individuals. It intends to investigate these relations through two land politics cases in the Socialist Beijing, set against the historical background of the city and Chinese conceptual contexts. Suggesting certain similarities to public/private demarcation, the thesis starts with a genealogy of the Chinese gong-si division, arguing the moral superiority of the abstract ideas of gong over si; it argues that changing understandings of gong/public and the intricate connections between various gong and si embodiments (i.e. state, collective, family, individual) contribute – and in some ways constitutes -- politics. Based on data acquired by archival work, in-depth interviews and literature reviews, the thesis then grounds the issue into two empirical cases: the land ownership nationalisation in the expansion of Tiananmen Square, and the struggles over property in the Bell&Drum Towers area from the 1950s to 1970s. The thesis argues that the significant power of the state, particularly the compulsory power to expropriate land, depends on moral and political authority attained by its status as a gong embodiment, is dependent on: its constant practice of constructing other bodies such as family and individual as si embodiments; constructing private property and private economy as flawed si; and also on its suppression of other public/gong entities, especially the collective and the city. However, it also argues, challenges from the private/si category and from other potential public/gong bodies always exist too. This is reflected in private people’s strategic use of the normative gong in their daily practices related to property and in many collective practices. It is the divergence between gong and si and the simultaneous intimacy between them that generates politics.

Payling, Daisy Catherine Ellen. "'Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire' : activism in Sheffield in the 1970s and 1980s." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6587/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the tensions present in left-wing projects of renewal in the 1970s and 1980s by examining the activism of one city; Sheffield. It finds that behind the 'Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire' lay a more complex set of relationships between activists from different movements, strands of activism, and local government. It sets out Sheffield City Council's attempt at a new left-wing politics, its form of 'local socialism,' and explores how the city's wider activism of trade unionism, women's groups, peace, environmentalism, anti-apartheid, anti-racism, and lesbian and gay politics was embraced, supported, restricted or ignored by the local authority. Despite deindustrialisation and contemporary discussions of the decline of class politics, there was a persistence of class and a dominance of the labour movement in Sheffield. Unsurprisingly archival evidence, oral histories, and photographs point to tensions between class and identity politics. Yet, the focus of this thesis on how a number of new social movements and identity-based groups operated in one place, and its detailed analysis of the sites, methods, and relationships of activism has revealed the extent to which tensions existed, not only between class and identity, but between the different subjectivities represented in new social movements and identity politics. In this way, Sheffield's activism sheds light on the wider British left, showing the resilience of class-based politics and how popular notions of renewal were limited by conventions of solidarity.

Dzuverovic, Lina. "Pop art tendencies in self-managed socialism : pop reactions and counter-cultural pop in Yugoslavia in 1960s and 1970s." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2017. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2850/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores forms of Pop Art on the territory of the former Yugoslavia in the 1960s and 1970s, seeking to identify its local variants. Yugoslavia, a single party state, built on the legacy of the anti-fascist Partisan struggle, principles of solidarity, egalitarianism, self-management and a strong sense of internationalism due to its founding role in the Non-Aligned Movement, was, at the same time, a country immersed in what has been termed 'utopian consumerism'. The thesis examines how Yugoslav artists during this period dealt with the burgeoning consumer society and media boom, kitsch and the Westernization of Yugoslav culture, phenomena which were ideologically at odds with the country’s own socialist principles. Starting from an analysis of the role of the artist in post-war Yugoslav system of self-management, the thesis proposes that Pop in Yugoslavia can be read as a critical site of articulation and negotiation of that role. Yugoslavia’s founding principles, formed as a legacy of the People’s Liberation Struggle (1941 – 1945), were based upon self-management and the introduction of social property, with art being a democratizing force with a central emancipatory role in the building of the new socialist state. But socialist modernism gradually relegated culture to a more illustrative role, as a form of ‘soft power’ for the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The thesis proposes a reading of artists’ diverse engagements with popular culture and materials as varied expressions of resistance to the severing of links with Yugoslavia’s founding principles. My original contribution to knowledge lies in the identification of two strands of Pop in the country–‘Yugoslav Pop Reactions’ and ‘Yugoslav Countercultural Pop’ which each turned to popular culture and cheap everyday materials as an alternative channel through which to respond to socialist modernism. My claim is that the two positions represent two diametrically opposed responses to the disenchantment with socialist modernism and artists’ roles in society – both using the language of Pop Art but representing two different conceptual positions. The thesis is structured around three core questions. Firstly it asks whether it is possible to retrospectively apply the category of Pop Art to artworks which never originally claimed this term. Secondly it examines ways in which Pop tendencies altered the position of Yugoslav female artists, who, marginalised in a heavily male-dominated environment, looked to Pop as an enabling force, allowing new working methods and‘giving licence’ to new types of practices. The third question is concerned with the relationship between power, politics and Pop Art in Yugoslavia, asking to what extent Yugoslav Pop was a form ofpolitical practice, and to what extent is it was a local adaptation of international currents and themes. This thesis is associated with Tate’s multiannual research into ‘global pop’, which culminated in the exhibition ‘The World Goes Pop’ (September 2015 – January 2016, Tate Modern) through a Collaborative Doctoral Award (AHRC). This involved an advisory role in the exhibition research on the territory of the former Yugoslavia, identifying artists and artworks for potential inclusion in the exhibition. The methodology of the thesis was in part shaped by this context, beginning with close studies of artworks, their critical reception, and the study of their context–the sites of production and exhibition in the country at the time. Whilst both local and international literature on Yugoslav art history, global Pop Art as well as Yugoslav material culture and political context has been important, the core research involved oral histories, and visits to artists’ studios, museum collections, depots and archives in search of original artworks. The thesis draws on approximately twenty interviews with artists, curators, art historians and other art workers who were active in 1960s and 1970s, combined with the above-mentioned scholarship.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this mixed thesis is to describe the characteristics of oral language in 3-year-old children and its use during social interactions between peers in a public institution in Cercado de Lima. The study of this topic is essential because it is recognized that social interactions are a means to develop oral language in the first years of life. In this stage, a more intense socialization process takes place because children acquire skills to be able to cope in different situations, one of them is the development of oral language and socialization skills. The study is empirical in nature and is developed under the case study method, which allows me to describe in depth the characteristics of the language of the children who participate in this research. For this, instruments have been designed that allow us to collect the necessary information according to the objectives set. These instruments are; the checklist to collect the oral language characteristics of 3-year-old children applied throughout daily activities; the semi-structured observation guide and an additional checklist which was applied during the free play routine. These instruments were applied taking into account the ethical principles that safeguard the integrity of those involved. The results of this research show that it is important to reflect on the development of oral language and how it allows children to function effectively during their peer interactions. In this sense, teachers must play a fundamental role in the development of oral language, providing children with spaces for interaction that allow them to experience various situations spontaneously inside and outside the classroom.

Lecki, Dorjan. "Socialist urban development in the city of Rijeka, Yugoslavia, during the 1960s." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/61753.

Full text
Abstract:
The city of Rijeka is situated on the point where the Mediterranean Sea penetrates deeply into the European continent. Between 1945 and 1991 the city was governed by the Yugoslav socialist state. As an important industrial center with a wide array of manufacturing economic branches and the largest port in the entire Yugoslav federation, Rijeka witnessed a significant immigration from other parts of the country. During the 1960s and the 1970s the Yugoslav federal government enacted a series of laws that decentralized the state. One of the most notable ones was the Law on Workers’ Self-Management which established workers’ collectives in all major enterprises. The decision-making process was lowered to the local level, and this shift had a significant impact on the urban development process in Rijeka. The urban expansion was a joint effort of four parties – the workers’ collectives, the Council for Urban Planning, the Urbanist Institute, and the large construction companies. These four parties were responsible for Rijeka’s urban development and the creation of Rijeka as a functional Yugoslav socialist city. The interrelation between the major actors in Rijeka’s urban expansion was an important element in the narrative as it produced the urban fabric that is distinctly Yugoslav socialist. The historical heritage, challenging topography, massive immigration, and the multitude of parties involved in the urban development process were some of the notable factors in Rijeka’s urban expansion during the communist rule. However, topography and the official discourse were the most significant challenges to achieve optimal urban development. Therefore, I argue that the urban development process in Rijeka during the Yugoslav socialist period was a result of the interrelation between the Yugoslav communist ideology and the challenging terrain configuration.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of the western European socialist parties’ transnational cooperation in European integration in the 1970s. It argues that their cooperation across national borders significantly influenced politics and policy-making in what was then the European Communities (EC). The thesis focuses on the network-like informal structures that characterised transnational cooperation between those socialist (leading) party members/leaders of different national parties involved in European affairs. Methodologically, the study draws on concepts from political science, notably, the ‘policy network’ approach and the notion of ‘Europeanisation’ and utilises these concepts as analytical tools for historical source analysis. Empirically, the study is based on extensive archival research in 17 archives in nine countries, including newly accessible party sources and previously undisclosed private papers. While so far research concentrated on Christian democrats’ contribution to European integration, for the first time, the thesis documents that socialist transnational cooperation in and through transnational networks was an important factor of the emerging European governance system. In two case studies, the thesis addresses the role of the socialist transnational cooperation concerning two important policy areas, namely, EC development aid policy and EC southern enlargement policy. Both policy fields helped define the external dimension of European politics and policy-making in the 1970s with major challenges such as the fair distribution of resources between the rich North and the poor South and the transitions in southern Europe with tremendous consequences for the political order in Western Europe and the EC. The thesis demonstrates that the socialist parties strengthened their informal transnational network structures for the purposes of debating ideological and programmatic issues and finding policy solutions to common challenges in both policy fields. Moreover, it shows that the socialist transnational networks developed various functions to influence European governance. Against this background, the analysis in this thesis makes not only a significant contribution to the study of transnational networks of western European socialist parties and European integration in the 1970s; it also adds to our understanding of the role of transnational networks in European politics and policy-making.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Analysis of the social structure of the socialist party (s. F. I. O. ) (1920-1950) in the departement de la somme. In this area, the process of industrialization was carried out without excessive urban growth or rural exodus. State education and a particular brand of patriotism, born in response to foreign invasions, has affected the way in which proletarian internationalism was assimilated in this area. Three main chapters follow in chronological order: 1. Influence of the past, 2. The time of choices, 3. Republic and civic virtues. Party files dating from the years 1936, 37, 38, 45, 46, 47, provided data on the social origins of party members, their mentalities and the images they had of the party itself, the state and the republic. Testimonies from older militants, the party press, and the prefectoral archives reveal a world where republican values, and a strong spirit of independance outweigh considerations of party discipline

Abstract:
For historians of twentieth-century British affairs, the decade of the 1930s is very significant. It was marked not only by a devastating economic crisis at the outset, but also by the rise of fascism in Europe and the onset of the Second World War at its close. These issues were problematic in themselves, but Britain’s response to them was complicated still further by the deep divisions between the Left and the Right over socialism and over the Soviet Union. The presence of the USSR in the East and its influence in Britain loomed over the internal debates that took place, affecting British responses to difficult situations in drastic and far-reaching ways. People of both anti-Soviet and pro-Soviet persuasions were forced to account for events that did not tally with their most strongly held beliefs, hopes or fears. This dissertation explores the ways in which British people of a variety of political leanings publicly processed and coped with the role of the Soviet Union in these debates. Using a range of sources including contemporary newspapers, books and pamphlets, I will trace the evolution of attitudes to the Soviet Union from 1929, the first year of the economic crisis, up until 1943, the high point of the Anglo-Soviet wartime alliance. My analysis will show how people with fundamentally different belief systems mirrored each other in their responses to intellectual challenges, and how interactions between different groups sustained or exaggerated each group’s response to the Soviet Union. I will also critique the analyses of some historians who have limited the parameters of their studies to take in only single groups or single events, and in so doing have become unfairly critical of individuals who struggled to process a large number of difficult and confusing events.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with file sharing in the age of the Internet. We will analyze aspects of sociality in a file sharing community specialized in the art of cultivating, sowing, preserving of digital files (described as âdigital seedsâ). Digital seeds are basically any digitized computer file (for example, a movie, a song, a book, a software etc.) that needs to be virtually planted until it blooms and can be shared over the internet by P2P (peer-to-peer) networks. In this sense, this thesis is a narrative about a relational experience that we experienced (from 2008 to 2017) in a community of cyber seeders named Oasis (fictitious name). Oasis is a closed community that has about 60,000 registered members (until early 2017). Our methodological perspective led us to follow erratic digital paths that make up the unique dynamic that constitutes what we call "sharing economy". In this way, we try to elucidate the movement of digital seeds through the senses of morality credited by the "file sharers" who particularly attend that community. Indeed, in this thesis we report practices and experiences that make up what we identify as "ethics of sharing", a sort of "spirit of sharing" that acts (through a symbolic alchemy) in the transformation of digital files or goods into gifts and honors ready to be dispersed through cooperative and decentralized sharing networks. In other words, a digital seed can best be presented in the form of a "living thing"; that is, as a seed of life laden with riches, dignities and hopes, exactly for establishing the understanding that cultural productions are artifacts produced to be freely dispersed as a "common good." Finally, we highlight how this cyber ecology presents itself as a project that intends to ensure the implementation of a protection network of digital seeds threatened by forgetfulness and neglect.

Cochrane, Allan Douglas. "The limits of local politics : local socialism and the local economy in the 1980s : a case study of Sheffield's economic policies." Thesis, Open University, 1991. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57318/.

Full text
Abstract:
The analysis of local politics has too often been partial and one-sided. Dominant approaches to its study have tended to emphasise either the institutions of local government, or the logic of the local state, or (more recently) its relationship to localities. This thesis seeks to bring together a range of different approaches in ways which make it easier to explore the processes of local politics, acknowledging that no single approach is likely to provide all the answers. But it argues that those debates which build links between politics and geography, around the notion of locality , are particularly helpful, as long as they do not lose sight of politics within the state (as expressed, for example, in Rhodes' discussion of policy networks), and (following Duncan, Goodwin, Halford, and Savage) as long as localities are not understood as coherent expressions of underlying relations. Following a critical discussion of the locality debates (associated with the ESRC's Changing Urban and Regional System programme), it is suggested that notions of local growth coalition (as developed by Cox and Mair) and urban corporatism (as developed by Harvey) may be helpful in analysing change at local level. This suggestion is taken further through a case study of the development of 'local socialism' and of local economic policies in Sheffield in the 1980s. The concluding chapter seeks to set out the lessons which can be drawn from the Sheffield experience, relating back to the earlier arguments, as well as suggesting ways of integrating those conclusions with the analyses of the state developed by Jessop at a more abstract level.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to study international migration between Mexico and the United States, and particularly in the family remittances that Mexican migrants send from its neighbor from the north.
Regarding its structure, this thesis is composed in four parts. Part I try to explain migration and family remittances in Mexico through six chapters that goes from different definitions proposed by diverse authors or institutions: main interpretative approaches of preceding works, empirical and statistical analysis, migratory policy, migration evolution, migration geography and the amount of remittances and its regional distribution.
Part II is dedicated to the evolution of Mexican foreign sector; an analysis of Payment Balances in 1950-2004 that is based on the analysis of current and capital accounts. The objective proposed in this part is to determine the performance of these two accounts in the period previously specified, and how they affected Mexican economy. The knowledge of the current account evolution and the effects on the country economy allows relating foreign accounts with migration and family remittances.
Part III focuses on family remittances and its relative importance in function to other Balance of Payments variables. Practically all the analysis is developed from an empirical view, where family remittances evolution and its weight on unilateral transfers are directly studied; this permit a great knowledge over family remittances and other issues related to the Mexican remittances tendency.
The final part is based on the explanation of the empirical data. The proposed objective for this final part was to measure the relation between economic growth and family remittances recollection. In order to accomplish this objective it has been realized two econometrical regressions based on OLS. In the same way it was measured the family remittances capacity to finance the current account deficit. The obtained results in this part allow us to prove second and third hypothesis of this study. The analysis is closed with the debt problem and foreign debt by interest's payment and capital utilities.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that George MacLeod, Church of Scotland minister and popular radio preacher, developed a distinctive Christian social vision whilst working in Govan, in the 1930s. The vision, which called for renewal in corporate worship and a new ‘social gospel’, has been underestimated in its importance. For renewal, he promoted aspects of liturgical and sacramental traditions within Scoto and Anglo-Catholicism and reinterpreted doctrine and scripture in the light of modern scientific and biblical scholarship, encouraging more sophisticated expressions of faith for increasingly literate congratulations. His ‘social gospel’ and new theological profile, influenced by Anglican expressions of ‘Christian Socialism’, developed in response to endemic social injustices within mature capitalist economies, rising collective movements and communist and fascist ideologies, which threatened to remove injustices through violent means. MacLeod sympathised increasingly with political socialism, supporting gradual and peaceful reform. His eclectic vision grew out of experiences of war, the legacy of previous MacLeod Tory paternalists and radical clerics, by the theatre and symbolism of Eastern Orthodox traditions and popular themes within ‘Celtic Christianity’. These reinforced his emphasis on the incarnation, divine immanence, ecumenism and community; themes associated with ‘Christian Socialism’. MacLeod joined John White’s crusade, in the 1930s, to review national religion, the parish system and godly commonwealth ideal. However, admiring the ecumenical movement and figures like John Baillie and William Temple, he sought a united Christian witness across boundaries of nation, ethnicity, class and denomination. Iona, boasting its important pre-reformation Christian witness, seemed to symbolise an indigenous yet ecumenical expression of the faith, during Scotland’s interwar romantic cultural renaissance. This research contextualises his teachings, explains the development of his vision and uncovers the original purpose of the Iona Community he founded in 1938, more fully than any previous research.

Child, Danielle Leanne. "Socialised labour under change : collaboration, contracted labour and collective modes of production in art since the 1960s." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2420/.

Full text
Abstract:
Adopting an historical materialist methodology, this thesis examines how artistic labour is affected under specific phases of capitalism from monopoly through neoliberal capitalism. It is not the intention here to argue that artists directly adopt or accept capitalist tropes; rather, it is to argue that the recent socialised artistic practices have a dialectical relationship to the social turn that capitalism has recently taken. The first chapter considers the establishment of US art fabrication firms in relation to the renewal of the deskilling thesis in the late 1960s by Harry Braverman. I argue that the deskilling that occurred in art making in the late 1960s – often termed the ‘dematerialisation of art’ (Lippard and Chandler) - was a response to the ideological changes that originated from the implementation of Taylorist and Fordist production methods in the US. The second chapter addresses the establishment of the Mike Smith Studio in London – an artist facilitator – in terms of the ‘new spirit’ of capitalism (Boltanski and Chiapello). I argue that the Mike Smith Studio was able to emerge as a business model within the UK because of the changes implemented by the ‘new spirit’ ideology and its accompanying neoliberal tropes (such as flexibility, individuality, the network and an increase in contracted labour). My final chapter delineates two socialised artistic practices that exemplify opposing reactions to neoliberal ideologies: relational aesthetics and art-activism. I argue that relational aesthetics adapts to these ideologies whilst art-activism attempts to critique capitalism by stepping outside of the art institution and into ‘everyday life’. Art-activism does not, however, divorce itself entirely from neoliberalism by doing so. I conclude my thesis by considering these newer artistic practices in relation to the task of the historical avant-garde (that is, the return of art to life praxis) and propose that the art-activists are the art practitioners who have come closest to achieving this task.

The introduction focuses on Humphrey Jennings' (1907-1950) accomplishments, and what studies have been done on him, and how he is relatively unknown in France. The first part evokes Jennings' life, his literary and artistic engagements, including the crucial roles he played in the British surrealist movement, the founding of Mass Observation and his compilation on the Industrial Revolution, Pandaemonium. The second part is about Jennings the filmmaker. It begins with a short history of the British documentary film movement and Jennings' first films. With the outbreak of the Second World War, Jennings devoted himself to making propaganda films. Drawing from British tradition, these poetic documentaries had a profound effect on civilians and raised their moral. Today, they remain the most moving and true accounts of that time. Detailed analysis of these films follow. Jennings died accidentally in 1950. But his work is underrated. Some critics even believing his reputation to depend solely on the exceptional circumstances of the war. This thesis assumes the total of Jennings' work as poet, painter and filmmaker in order to establish his place as major artist of the twentieth century

Abstract:
Dominicana o Ecuador.
This dissertation analyzes the demographic component of Latin American international migration from a retrospective and prospective standpoint. Its main goal is to measure the impact of Latin American demographic growth on its potential for international migration. The results of the research are sorted out into two big parts. First part is the corresponds to the retrospective analysis of net migration between 1950 and 2010, and the second one focuses on the prospective study of extra-regional migration from a case study on Latin American emigration to Spain. Two key contributions stand out from the first part of this thesis: i) The creation of a typology of sex and age schedule of international migration, where each country and period are classified. This typology results from the analysis of specific rates of net migration, summarized by a Principal Component Analysis which allowed identifying at least three mobility profiles. From these profiles, countries were classified by using Cluster Analysis techniques. This classification allows accurately reconstructing the mobility trajectories of the countries in analysis between 1950 and 2010, not only focusing on the migration intensity but also analyzing the sex and age features in the same indicator. ii) Modeling of net migration evolution, through a Macro-Panel Model with Fixed Effects, allows measuring the effect of natural growth on international migration in the presence of processes such as urbanization and GDP’s growth, which inhibit the effect of natural growth on external migration. The findings point to the role of Demographic Transition as a relevant determinant of past migration. The second part of the dissertation approaches the evaluation of demographic potential for emigration in the light of the hypothesis that the aging process of the region, yet incipient, hinders a migratory boom similar to the one of the last decade. The contributions to this part of the research are at least these two: i) From the analysis of rates of emigration to Spain, the estimation of Gross Migra-production Rate and the study of the age-schedule of mobility for 19 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, the last forty years of migration are described from the perspective of the origin countries, and the main features of this kind of flow are identified. ii) Based on this description, a set of projection scenarios for emigration to Spain is defined, through a methodology that incorporates the specific characteristics of every origin and sex group, introducing some variants of projection that account for the age-schedule to migration and the processes of familiar regrouping among other processes affecting the age-schedule. The main result of this second part is the projection of the number of Latin American migrants to Spain by country of birth, nationality, sex and age, up to the year 2050. For all scenarios, both of decrease and recovery, a reduction in the Latin American emigration is appreciated, being verifiable as from 2045 and attributable to the ageing of the Latin American population. Also a change in the composition for flow origins is expected, which is explained by the increase in share of migrants coming from younger countries (Paraguay, Bolivia and Central America) and the expected decline in the flows of those origins which up to 2010 had important emigration intensity, such as Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay, Dominican Republic or Ecuador.

Abstract:
The following thesis studies the ways in which the Peruvian state of the fifties tried to mold the practices, habits and usages of the homeless movement during the beginnings of the Housing crisis in Lima city. In order to achieve this, the present investigation relies on the analysis of bureaucracy papers produced by many state institutions and the study of one particular case: The Ciudad de Dios Popular Project (1954-1958), whose historical reconstruction was made through a process of detailed examination of media news of those years, interviews and the review of neighborhood documentation. The thesis sustains that the state and the economic elites attempted to convert the land invaders and the slum duelers into an ideal type of neighbor owner. Therefore, the present investigation argues that the state institutions believed that the transformation of the settlers’ ways of life would be the solution of the housing problem in the city. Following this logic, a new way of analysis of the beginning of the housing problem is proposed. To illustrate, the recount of state projects and the major town planning milestones are taken in account but, above all, the thesis analyses the ways in which the modern capitalist state tries to control the behavior and the everydayness of certain human groups.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Detailed study of tuberculosis in Spain has been undertaken by many authors from differing perspectives, and the approaches to analysing this disease are varied. In the early days, studies centred on the major findings and biographies of doctors who played a major role in the fight against tuberculosis, although more recently the general tendency has been on emphasising the epidemiological and social aspects related to the disease. All the works published in Spain, however, whether they be based on the earlier approach to the problem, or stem from a more modern historiography, have had a common denominator: the scant attention paid to the impact of bovine tuberculosis as a source of infection to humans. This, in the majority of cases, has been an important omission.
This doctoral thesis, from a historical perspective, attempts to fill this void, giving the subject of zoonotic transmission of bovine tuberculosis all the attention it deserves, and underlines the importance of this animal disease on human health.

Paris 10, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005PA100138.

Full text
Abstract:
The medical investment in physical education between 1880 and 1950 was the result of particular social conjecture favourising the establishment of a collective position. This process of “medicalisation” was a force which invested physical education in multiple ways, in an irreversible, anonymous process, a regular and insiduous annexations. It was as if this process of medicalisation was taking place in a social vacuum. This explains the basic analytical approach adopted : to examine the evolution from an underlying “medico-pedagogical and sporting” interest (still linked to an emerging reforming system) to a specialised interest group. The analysis follows the progress of this developing interest as it forms and re-forms and traces the new lines of divison established between the various actors working in the domain of the manipulation of the human body
