Abstract:
The Persian Presence in Victorian Poetry surveys the variety of ways in which Persia, and the multitude of ideological, historical, cultural and political notions that it embodied, were received, circulated, and appropriated. The word ‘Persia’ to the Victorian was not just the name of a territorial entity but a matrix of different notions, created and crafted by a range of oral and written stories, themes and tropes. ‘Persia’ was a product of a mental vision with a long historical heritage, formed by a variety of sources, and circulating in different media. The Victorians responded to this heritage from different perspectives, marked by every shade of social class, religious affiliation, or political allegiance. This book charts this diversity of perceptions, exploring the ways in which ‘Persia’ figures in Victorian poetry across a broad range of works incorporating literary, historical, and cultural material.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 is concerned with interdisciplinary debates across contemporary youth justice, life course criminology, and socio-economic history. It deals with the challenge of bringing historical insight to bear within contemporary criminal justice thinking. The ‘impacts’ of the system at the personal level, from the perspective of some of those who experienced child removal at first hand, are discussed. The chapter considers how those responsible for the day-to-day governance of the early youth justice system judged its successes and failures. It then discusses life chances and life courses, and the effects that child removal and long institutional sentences could have on these, and the way in which the youth labour market in Victorian and Edwardian times also affected opportunity and potential social advancement. Finally, some of the ills of institutional life, and also the potentially beneficial relationships formed both in institutions, and after leaving them, are considered.

Abstract:
Abstract Modernity and the Victorians traces the impact of social-scientific theory on the historiography of Victorian Britain, before proposing an alternative conception of the political and social dynamics of the period. It begins with a sketch of the rise of social science as a method of understanding the world between the Enlightenment and the early decades of the twentieth century, covering both British and European developments, and giving particular attention to the theories of Émile Durkheim and Max Weber. It then considers the forms of ‘modernization’ theory, and conceptions of the condition of ‘modernity’, which emerged in twentieth-century social scientific analysis, and traces how these came to be applied in historical scholarship on nineteenth-century Britain. The second half of the book makes the case that ‘modernization theory’ cannot be made to fit the facts of Victorian history. It argues instead that historians need to pay much closer attention to notions of the past, morality, and community if they want to understand how nineteenth-century Britain worked. The book is at once a piece of twentieth-century intellectual history, a contribution to the history of scholarship, a commentary on more recent historiography, and an attempt to intervene in current debates about the practice and future of political history.

Abstract:
How did Britain transform itself from a nation of workhouses to one that became a model for the modern welfare state? This book investigates the evolution of living standards and welfare policies in Britain from the 1830s to 1950 and provides insights into how British working-class households coped with economic insecurity. The book examines the retrenchment in Victorian poor relief, the Liberal Welfare Reforms, and the beginnings of the postwar welfare state, and it describes how workers altered spending and saving methods based on changing government policies. From the cutting back of the Poor Law after 1834 to Parliament's abrupt about-face in 1906 with the adoption of the Liberal Welfare Reforms, the book offers new explanations for oscillations in Britain's social policies and how these shaped worker well-being. The Poor Law's increasing stinginess led skilled manual workers to adopt self-help strategies, but this was not a feasible option for low-skilled workers, many of whom continued to rely on the Poor Law into old age. In contrast, the Liberal Welfare Reforms were a major watershed, marking the end of seven decades of declining support for the needy. Concluding with the Beveridge Report and Labour's social policies in the late 1940s, the book shows how the Liberal Welfare Reforms laid the foundations for a national social safety net. A sweeping look at economic pressures after the Industrial Revolution, this book illustrates how British welfare policy waxed and waned over the course of a century.
