Roldan, Dario J. "Housing for Medically Vulnerable Homeless Adults| A Medical Respite Program." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10262368.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of the project was to fund a medical respite program for homeless adults discharged from hospitals; too stabilized to remain in a hospital, and with recuperative needs too severe to remain on streets, or in a traditional shelter. This program will collaborate with other programs at the Weingart Center Association and local service providers to support homeless individuals. The Weingart Center Association, the hosting agency of this project, is located in Los Angeles County, California.

After conducting a review of the literature, the grant writer designed a medical respite program providing 24 hour shelter; access to care management; case management; access to medical professionals; nutrition needs; and psychosocial supports. After researching funding sources, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation was determined to the most applicable match for funding of the project.

Actual submission and funding of the grant were not required for the successful completion of this project.

Lynch, Sienna. "AN EXPLORATION OF SOCIAL WORKER RISK IN THE FIELD WHEN WORKING WITH VULNERABLE ADULTS AND THEIR DESIRE FOR SAFETY TRAINING." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/482.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the risk that social workers face in the field while serving vulnerable adults to determine if there is need to implement mandated safety training based on social worker experiences and their desire for initial safety training. There needs to be a clear understanding of risks faced by social workers and their desire for safety training to implement safety standards and training for social workers across the board in social service agencies and academic institutions. There is minimal research currently on this topic and thus this study is paving the way for future research, as well as providing insight to risks faced by social workers who conduct field visits. This quantitative study presents different field situations that have put the social worker’s personal safety at risk and desire for safety training based on their personal experience. The results show a desire and need for mandatory safety training prior to entering the field. The results show a positive correlation between years in the field and risks faced in the field. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between age and desire for field safety training. There were differences found in risks experienced and desire for safety training by gender, education and ethnicity. This study is the start to understanding safety risks faced by social workers in the field and suggests developing safety training policy to ensure social worker safety in the field in both social service agencies and academic institutions.

Sherwood-Johnson, Fiona. "Exploring the meaning of protection from abuse : problem construction in Scottish adult support and protection practice and policy." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/17004.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD project by publication begins to explore how Scottish adult support and protection (ASP) policy and practice carves out its role and remit. It examines the ways that concepts like “abuse”, “vulnerability” and “protection” have been constructed, both by individual practitioners and at a policy level. The submission comprises five papers published in peer-reviewed journals and this contextualising document, which knits together the work and draws out overall conclusions and implications. The papers themselves report on a literature review, a further analysis of case study research into ASP practice and a critical policy comparison. The case study research was conducted immediately prior to legislative changes in Scotland with respect to ASP, and the policy comparison was conducted subsequently to these changes. Overall, the findings highlight the ways that a social constructionist approach can usefully deepen our understandings of ASP. That is, they show how understanding concepts like “protection”, “vulnerability” and “abuse” to be actively constructed in unique and complex contexts can promote criticality in policy-making, practice and research.

Wanègue, Mickaël. "Du risque au péril, dialectiques de la protection du vulnérable : la pratique du mandat judiciaire en direction des majeurs protégés." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AIXM3009.

Full text
Abstract:
Subsequent to court decision, authorized representatives (MJPMs) intervene in the lives of vulnerable adults ostensibly to ensure their protection. When contemplating statutory legislation and one-to-one interaction with vulnerable person/s, the central question is: How do MJPMs enact their perceived protection missions? Questions surround both debate and the choices proposed, and the strategies employed by authorized representatives when implementing the requisite protection policies. Professional practice investigates the notion of activity via a combination of ergology and language interaction. Interviews with MJPMs and their managers, and field observation of the interaction between MJPMs and protected adults elucidated the reality of the mission of protection. Priority is given to the human relationship institutionalized through a legal framework and confrontation with vulnerability. MJPM practices are crossed by three axes that have been identified and which intersect each other, i.e., the authority of the judiciary, vulnerability, and the self-autonomy of the protected person according to the legal reform of 5 March 2007. For the MJPM, debate surrounding the perceived norms, together with some main values, starts from this nodal point. The purpose of this study is not only to explicate and emphasize these values, but to underscore their value as training needs for the better fulfillment of the MJPMs’ mission

Vailu'u, Carley Yvonne. "Social Work Practice with Older Adults." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5669.

Full text
Abstract:
Social workers working for adult protective services (APS) face many clinical challenges to ensure the safety and well-being of older adult clients. APS social workers often interact with older adults who engage in self-neglecting behaviors that compromise their ability to function in a healthy and independent manner. The purpose of this research study was to explore challenges in direct social work practice to identify how APS services can be improved when working with the older adult population, particularly individuals who engage in hoarding behaviors. Using action research methodology, 2 focus groups were conducted to explore the experiences and knowledge of social workers who are trained in APS and in-home supportive services programs and work directly with the older adult hoarding population when investigating cases of self-neglect. The theoretical framework of cognitive behavioral theory guided the analysis of focus group data to provide insights into understanding the core manifestations of hoarding and how social workers working with this population can provide appropriate services. The overall findings of the study resulted in identifying improvements to APS service interventions. Study findings inform recommendations that allow APS social workers to effectively work with older adults who exhibit hoarding behaviors, while also advancing professional development in the field of social work. Understanding practice challenges to appropriately serve older adults that exhibit hoarding behaviors is essential in effecting positive social change in the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged older adults, APS agencies, and communities.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to get a deeper understanding, from a Swedish context, of how you can do social work with vulnerable and orphaned children in a developing country such as Uganda. We have investigated this through the example WEBALE, an NGO working in a context where among other things HIV/AIDS, poverty and a defective social safety net have led to social problems affecting children. Further, we have also aimed at acquiring a deeper understanding of what it is that motivates the volunteers and the director to work with vulnerable children at WEBALE. In order to fulfil this aim, the research has the following two key questions: What is the motivation for the teacher volunteers and the manager to work with vulnerable children at WEBALE? How do the teacher volunteers perceive the social work with the children in everyday life at WEBALE and what experiences do they have from this? The study is a field study with a phenomenological and ethnological approach. We were present at and took part in the everyday life of the informants at the school and orphanage in Uganda for eight weeks. The investigation uses a qualitative method where four interviews and participant observations were carried out. The results are analyzed in connection with theories on social work defining preventions and interventions, where theories on risk- and protection factors and the salutogenetic theory on SOC have been used. The analysis is also connected to theories on social work with children from a developmental-ecological and attachment-theoretical perspective. The results show what it is that motivates the volunteers and manager to work as volunteers in this specific contest through personal accounts of their background. Our observation is that the motivation of the volunteers and the manager to work with orphaned and vulnerable children is closely connected to their own background and childhood. The biggest reason for this kind of a life choice seems to be a sense of coherence and the largest motivating factor is that the work they do feels meaningful. The results further highlight the social work that is carried out and how the volunteers perceive their work at WEBALE. The study shows that the volunteers (who mainly consist of teachers) carry out what can be called social work, according to the definitions of interventions and preventions within various fields, such as health, education, emotional and behavioural development, ability to take care of oneself, social behaviour, family and social relations, and identity.

Abstract:
Community-based programmes are a popular approach to providing care and support to AIDS orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) as they are able to operate on a large scale and are informed by locally-appropriate responses. Using strength based and anti-oppressive theories of social work practice, this study aims to review community-based programmes for OVC in sub-Saharan Africa and explore the experiences of the targeted children and the communities in which they reside. A systematic review of literature was completed to ascertain 39 evaluations representing 29 different externally funded community-based programmes. The findings and analysis consider the strengths and limitations of local approaches, participation of local community members and the relationship between the North and South in regards to collaborative partnerships through the concepts of capacity building, ownership and power. Implications for policy, practice and theory, as well as limitations and opportunities for future research, are outlined.
Abstract:

The baby boom generation is the fastest growing demographic. With their aging comes an increase in the loss of loved ones. Essential to the mental well-being of this population who are at risk for depression and mortality is bereavement support with the overall goal of reducing bereavement-related depression and grief. Geriatric bereavement related-depression is often overlooked by health care professionals or if it is recognized prescribed medication has been a preferred remedy instead of other options such as group therapy. The proposed Archstone Foundation grant will support an English and Spanish speaking bereavement support group for adults age 65 and over at Barbara J. Riley Senior Community Center, Downey, California. A 6-week psycho-educational course will provide attendees with depression and grief reduction techniques utilizing Reminiscence, Cognitive Behavioral and Cognitive Grief Therapy. Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study considers the notion of evidence-based practice (EBP) and specifically what can be learnt from practice wisdom (PW). It is centres on a third sector organisation working with vulnerable young people. The study uses methods of observation, semi-structured interviews and focus groups, to establish the core components of effective practice. Findings reveal the need to adapt programmes to make them culturally relevant and that four specific approaches are needed for positive outcomes regardless of context. These are building effective working alliances; establishing clear and consistent boundaries with structure and discipline; motivating clients who are not always ready for change; and building hope and aspiration in young people that shows them how their futures might be different. Consideration is given to the ethical imperative to do no harm and findings are presented as to why this might happen based on practice experience. Theoretical fidelity is discussed and findings are critiqued in order to establish why these practice components work, how to avoid causing harm and how such practice may be improved further. It is concluded that although EBP cannot be achieved by an organisation alone due to wider client factors and policy maker decisions, there are core components identifiable through PW that encourage effective practice with vulnerable people.

Cook, Samantha R. "Social work students' attitudes toward adults with serious mental illness." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1523178.

Full text
Abstract:

Stigma toward adults with serious mental illness involves labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss and discrimination. Stigma has been linked to lowered self-esteem, social isolation and withdrawal, and lowered quality of life. As providers of treatment and services, it is fundamental that social work professionals have knowledge regarding serious mental illness and stigma. This quantitative study evaluated the attitudes of 87 Master of Social Work students attending California State University, Long Beach. Respondents completed the Attribution Questionnaire (AQ-27) which evaluated attitudes toward a schizophrenic man presented in a case vignette. Measurements of the nine subscales measuring stigma had a total possible range of 3-27. Results showed correlation between age and pity, differences between ethnicity and stigma subscales, and between stigma subscales and gender. This study contributes to the understanding of stigma toward adults with serious mental illness and shows the need for curriculum that addresses mental health, cultural diversity, and stigma.

Full text
Abstract:

This study examined the effectiveness of specific practice approaches and interventions utilized within New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) outpatient treatment programs. The dependent variables were social goal achievement and overall goal achievement. The independent variables examined included health related services, same-age group services, combinations of services, community linkages, and harm reduction.

The principal aim of this study was to identify effective substance abuse treatment services for older adults through a secondary analysis of an existing data set with a purposive, non-probability sample. The sample consisted of 1,456 adults ages 50 and over in 22 (OASAS) outpatient addiction treatment programs throughout the state. After matching program survey data and client level data, binary logistic regression analyses addressed the pertinent control and interaction variables. The main finding was that programs that provided age-tailored services for older addicted adults had better odds of overall goal achievement by a factor of 2.25 (p<.01), and for each increase in the number of age-tailored services provided, programs improved their odds of overall goal attainment by 21.6 percent (p<.001). Strong age-tailored services were associated with 2.3 times greater odds (p<.01) of social goal achievement, and each increase in the number of age-tailored services led to 16.7 percent improved odds (p<.001) of social goal achievement. In addition, the conditions of having employment and older age were variables linked to better odds of overall goal achievement, while the conditions of having parents who were themselves substance addicted and having co-occurring mental illness were variables linked to overall poorer odds for these outcomes. This study verified existing assertions and extended our understanding of effective approaches for the addicted senior population.

Abstract:
In order to create more efficient, useful alcohol treatment and intervention methods tailored specifically for the older population, it is important to understand the reasons that older adults perceive that they consume alcohol. For this reason, this study explored older adults’ perceptions regarding why they use alcohol. Older adults, age 60 and older, were surveyed through questionnaires completed at senior community centers within San Bernardino County. This was a mixed method design that used qualitative and quantitative analysis for the purpose of exploring the most frequently reported reasons for why older adults use alcohol. The main finding of the study is that older adults in the sample most frequently reported using alcohol for “having fun and celebration” and for “social reasons.” However, it is important to note that older adults reported a variety of motivations for using alcohol. Further research is suggested to determine correlations between demographics, alcohol use patterns, and older adults’ perceptions of why they use alcohol.

This curriculum was designed for older adults and their caregivers. The curriculum begins with an overview of the issue and addresses aging issues through six 3-hour sessions. The design was deliberate in nature to bring to light the importance of a social worker. It focuses on competence to work with families who seek caregiver model options, realities, and expectations of both the older adult and the caregiver, and what to look for in assisted living or aging in place. The importance of understanding cultural and spiritual aspects and their meanings in the caregiving process is emphasized. An extensive literature review identified various stressors among older adults and their caregivers and identified effective interventions to address their psychosocial needs based on evidence-based and empirically based research studies. This curriculum was designed to provide information and to bring awareness of the importance of empowerment of older adults and their caregivers.

Abstract:

The ownership of companion pets has increased steadily among the older adult population. This qualitative study examined the impact of companion pets on the well-being of older adults. The researcher developed the interview guide used in this study. Twelve older adults were interviewed.

Companion pets encouraged pet owners, who had at least one dog, to walk more. Companionship and a decrease in loneliness were two of the common themes in regards to the positive impact of pets on psychological well-being. More than half reported that their companion pets improved their social well-being by increasing their opportunities to meet new people. Almost half of the respondents reported that a decline in their own health was the main challenge they faced in taking care of their companion pets in older adulthood.

More research is needed on the impact of companion pets on the well-being of older adults.

Abstract:

The aging process comes with many challenges, including declining physical health, increased isolation and feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety, and development of dementia. Older adults who own pets often experience many benefits including increased levels of exercise and social engagement with their peers, decreased feelings of loneliness, and a stronger sense of purpose due to being responsible for caring for an animal. Research has shown that pet therapy can also be beneficial for older adults. The purpose of the project was to develop a pet therapy program for older adults, identify potential funding sources, and write a grant to fund the program at Jewish Family and Children's Services of Long Beach and West Orange County. The proposed program is a pet therapy program incorporating animal-assisted interventions into both group and individual therapy for older adults experiencing depression, anxiety, and isolation. Implications for social work practice are discussed. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not required for the successful completion of this project.

Abstract:
There is a lack of knowledge about how to provide services for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) among healthcare professionals, particularly for adults with precomorbid ADHD. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to explore the knowledge deficits of social workers and case managers regarding adults with precomorbid ADHD and their perception of obstacles in providing medication and counseling referrals. Participants' perceptions of obstacles was assessed through the framework of social problem-€solving theory. The sample included 10 participants: 6 case managers and 4 social workers. There were three codes that represented participants' perceptions of knowledge deficits regarding adults with precomorbid ADHD, training, precomorbidity, and comorbidity. The theme knowledge deficits emerged from participants' responses of needing more training about adults with precomorbid ADHD. There were also three codes that represented participants' perceptions of obstacles providing referrals which included medication and counseling, referrals, and challenges. The theme perceptions of obstacles emerged from participant responses regarding clients' resistance to services as a significant challenge. According to study results, knowledge deficits in participants were less likely to be detected when participants were asked questions about adults with ADHD and comorbidity. Participants found it easier to identify and provide referrals for adults with ADHD with cooccurring (comorbid) disorders. Social workers and case managers can use the results of this study to increase their knowledge about how to provide referrals for adults with ADHD as the only disorder.

Abstract:

The purpose of this grant proposal was to obtain funding to provide support groups for caregivers of older adults who have been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) in the Los Angeles area. The purpose of the support groups was to increase caregivers' level of emotional well-being as they would have a social support system in place. The caregivers would also receive psychoeducational services relating to ESRD to better understand how they could care for their loved ones.

An extensive literature review was conducted to identify effective interventions for the target population and to locate potential funders. The support groups were designed to enhance the quality of life for both caregivers and/ or their care recipients as they learn coping strategies. The actual submission of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to create a curriculum for adults over age 50 who are searching for employment. Older adults are more likely to be unemployed longer after a job loss, need to return to work after retirement, need health insurance or need to supplement their retirement income. They may desire social interaction, and/or need a sense of meaning in their lives that being employed can provide. Older adults are more likely to experience lower self-esteem and isolation than younger adults. This curriculum includes a focus on identifying and strengthening internal and external strategies and support systems for adults over 50 who are looking for employment.

This curriculum incorporates modules on the job search process, coping with stress, identifying transferable skills, resume creation, building computer skills including online professional networks, interviewing, and networking. It is hoped this curriculum will provide older adults with the skills and strategies to build greater confidence and secure employment that meets their unique needs to enhance their quality of life.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the daily press, morning and evening papers respectively, describe homeless people and their situation from a number of chosen articles. Was there a possibility to make clear if the public opinion of homelessness has changed from a media perspective during the last five years? In order to meet the purpose of the study, the authors have used discourse analysis of the chosen articles as well as the theory of social constructions and the theory of stigmatizing. The articles have been chosen from the two largest daily morning papers and the two largest evening papers. From each article many rich and close quotations are used, which subsequently have been analysed and interpreted. The quotations used are those considered best illustrating the questions to the articles. The result of the study showed certain differences between the morning and evening papers and how they describe the homeless and their problems. Differences were also noticed among the people interviewed in the various articles. Also the choice of words used by both the journalists and the interviewed will affect how the text in an article will be perceived by the reader.

Thornton, Kristina Marie. "SOCIAL WORKERS’ KNOWLEDGE ON AGING, AND ATTITUDES TOWARD OLDER ADULTS." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/628.

Abstract:
As the baby boomer generation continues growing older, the geriatric community, and their needs grow larger. Many of those needs will necessitate the assistance of social workers’ knowledgeable of geriatrics. Research suggests that many social workers have negative attitudes toward older adults and show little interest in working with the population. The research question of this study was, does social workers’ personal, educational, and professional experience in geriatrics influence their knowledge on aging, and attitudes toward older adults? The researcher hypothesized that social workers with more experience have more knowledge on aging and view older adults more positively. Quantitative and Qualitative data was collected through the administration of a survey created through the online platform Qualtrics. Study participants consisted of 33 social workers located in the state of California. The data was analyzed using univariate and bivariate tests such as frequency, percentage, Pearson r correlation coefficient, and One-Way ANOVA, through the JMP data analysis software program. Additionally, the researcher read over study participants written responses in order to identify themes that emerged. Significant findings were found that supported the hypothesis. A significant relationship was found between social workers’ professional experience (number of years of job experience caring for an older adult), and their knowledge on aging (Facts on Aging II score). Also, the effect of study participants reported education level on their attitudes toward older adults, and knowledge on aging were also significant. Finally, nearly half of study participants reported some degree of interest in working with older adults, while the other half were either impartial or uninterested. The themes identified by the researcher, identified in participants written explanation of their level of interest in working with older adults, suggests that social workers’ interest in working with older adults is influenced by the degree to which they perceive the work as important, enjoyable, and fulfilling their professional goals. The results and findings of this study could contribute to the body of research focused on identifying what influences social workers’ interest for working in geriatrics.

Abstract:
This study examines the HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of medical social workers that provide services to older adult populations and the effects that may impact service delivery. It was hypothesized that medical social workers believe that they lack sufficient knowledge to provide social work services to older adults with HIV/ AIDS. The study sample consists of medical social workers who work with older adult patients and residents at a southeast Atlanta hospital and nursing home. The study reported the findings of a 23-item questionnaire that measured knowledge of HIV/AIDS older adult related issues, professional preparation and attitudes regarding sexuality and older adults. A descriptive approach was used to analyze the data and report significant findings. Findings showed that social workers were knowledgeable, yet lacked knowledge in critical areas. Overall social workers believed that they were not prepared to provide effective service delivery. This research is of importance because in order to enhance the quality of life for at risk older adults, social workers need to evaluate their level of knowledge, their attitudes and become aware of any gaps in knowledge or biases that may impede effective service delivery.

Abstract:

A Secondary Analysis was conducting with data from the SAMSHA's 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The model of behavioral health for vulnerable populations was utilized to select key variables in order to examine the alcohol use, health, mental health and alcohol use treatment of older adult Latinos. Data from 395 Latinos over the age of 50 who reported drinking alcohol in their lifetime were used. The results showed that Latino men over the ages of 50 tend to use alcohol above the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) low risk guidelines. Additionally, older adults who were in poverty, reported depression and anxiety over the past year, and reported alcohol dependence were more likely to seek mental health treatment instead of specialty alcohol treatment. The findings underscore the importance of social workers in mental health settings to not only assess older adults for depression and anxiety but also for alcohol use disorders.

Abstract:
There has been a dramatic increase in opioid-related overdoses and deaths that have had extensive health impacts in Delaware County, New York. Social workers play a crucial role in working with individuals who have substance use and co-occurring disorders. The study was guided by ecological systems theory and the generalist intervention model focused on the engagement process between social workers and local young people. The current action research study explored the social work practice problem of challenges encountered by clinical social workers who engage in services with young adults ages 18-25 who have or are at risk for substance use disorders in Delaware County. It is essential to identify these challenges to help improve social work services that may potentially reduce substance use rates. The practice focused research question asked the participants their perception of the challenges in providing substance use services for young adult's ages 18-25 who reside in Delaware County. A focus group took place with 4 local private practice, licensed clinical social workers and 1 agency-based, licensed master-level social worker who all have experience working with Delaware County residents. Content analysis was used to explore and organize the data. The study revealed 7 themes that included client resistance, cultural issues, economic factors, professional competence, practitioner limitations, resource gaps, and client engagement. According to the participants, greater advocacy efforts are needed for clinical social work services because of the focus on both the environmental and emotional aspects of service provision. Possible implications for social change will be reduced service gaps that will result in more support options for those struggling with substance use.

Abstract:

Given the prevalence of homeless adults who experience a variety of co-occurring mental and substance use disorders, the purpose of this project was to identify a funding source and write a grant proposal to design and implement an integrated program that will address the needs of homeless adults with co-occurring disorders. The target area is Los Angeles County, more specifically, San Pedro, California. There are many risks associated with adults who experience co-occurring disorders, including chronically homelessness, poor health, high suicide rates, HIV I AIDS, and frequent interactions with the criminal justice system. The overarching goal of this proposed program is to decrease the prevalence of co-occurring disorders by offering effective treatment. The potential funding source for this project is the McMillen Family Foundation because the criteria of the grant guidelines were consistent with the nature of this program and identified population. The actual grant submission and/or funding of the grant was not a requirement for successful completion of this project.

Abstract:
This study examined the attitudes toward divorce of Black graduate students from intact and nonintact families of origin. The study hypotheses predicted that Black adults from nonintact families of origin would hold more positive attitudes toward divorce than Black adults from intact families of origin and that gender would significantly mediate the relationship between attitude toward divorce and family of origin type. A nonprobability convenience sampling procedure was used and questionnaires were administered to 50 Black graduate students to assess attitude toward divorce, family of origin type and other descriptive information. The researcher found that Black adults from nonintact households did not hold significantly more positive attitudes toward divorce than Black adults from intact families of origin, but gender did significantly mediate the relationship between family of origin type and attitude toward divorce. The conclusions drawn from this study suggest that investigations using independent variables other than family of origin type and those that investigate the relationship between attitude toward divorce and family of origin type, solely for Black men would be the most helpful in providing new information to help explain the prevalence of divorce in the African American community.

Abstract:
Policies and programs aimed at combating social isolation for community residing older adults are commonplace. Strikingly, these policies and programs are based on a body of literature that largely excludes the voices of older adults. Understanding how older adults perceive, experience and respond to social isolation is important if current policies and programs aim to better meet their needs. This qualitative phenomenological study sought to fill this gap in the literature by exploring how six older adults perceived and managed their social isolation. All participants resided in a rent-geared-to income complex in Montreal and all were identified as socially isolated by their service providers. The study revealed that older adults actively protect themselves from social isolation by engaging in purposeful activities within their homes and housing communities, and by engaging in low-risk social interactions. Policy and practice implications emerging from these findings include the significance of critically examining notions of aging well and the potential importance of fostering safe common spaces within housing facilities.
