Quiggle, Gregg William. "An analysis of Dwight Moody's urban social vision." Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54492/.

Full text
Abstract:
Dwight Moody was the dominant English-speaking evangelist of the late nineteenth century. Much of Moody's work focused on urban centers. This thesis is an analysis of the origins of Dwight Moody's urban social vision. Specifically it studies the role Moody's theology played in the formation of his approach to the various urban ills that emerged during the mid to late nineteenth century in the United States and the United Kingdom. The thesis seeks to show that theology drove Moody's approach to urban ills. Because of Moody's temperament and limited educational background, his personal experiences and personal relationships played an inordinately significant role in the formation of Moody's theology. The thesis explores these experiences and relationships demonstrating how they shaped Moody's theology. It concludes by outlining Moody's theological commitments that framed his social vision, and his resultant social activities. The thesis concludes Moody was an evangelical whose social vision was in significant ways contiguous with those of earlier revivalists like Finney. Specifically, Moody, like Finney, always made evangelism his first priority. Further, similar to Finney, Moody was active in the temperance movement and various educational endeavors. However, Moody's conception of human sinfulness and commitment to premillennialism created a different set of expectations. Moody was dubious about the future of human society. He believed sin was the cause of poverty and that conversion brought freedom from sin and a desire to love others, especially the poor. He also believed the Bible commanded charity to the poor. Consequently, while Moody never fully embraced the Calvinistic goal of a righteous republic, he was concerned about the moral state of the country and the lot of the poor. In fact, Moody was active in numerous charitable endeavors targeting the urban poor. However, Moody maintained the only way to improve public morality and the suffering of the poor was through personal conversion, because only conversion would solve the problem of sin and generate charity. Thus, from Moody's perspective political or structural reforms divorced from evangelism were ultimately doomed to fail.

Park, Hyun Soo. "Social Scene Understanding from Social Cameras." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2014. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/453.

Full text
Abstract:
In social scenes, humans interact with each other by sending visible social signals, such as facial expressions, body gestures, and gaze movements. Social cognition, the ability to perceive, model, and predict such social signals, enables people to understand social interactions and to plan their behavior in accordance with the understanding. Computational social cognition is a necessary function allowing artificial agents to enter the social spaces because it enables a socially acceptable behavior. However, two key challenges preclude developing computational social cognition: (1) the core attributes of social cognition such as attention, emotion, and intent are latent quantities that cannot be directly measured by existing sensors; (2) social behaviors are interdependent to each other, i.e., a unified representation is required to understand social behavior as wholes. In this thesis, we address these challenges by establishing a computational foundation towards social scene understanding from social cameras. A social camera is a camera held or worn by a member of a social group that inherits his/her gaze behavior. This social camera is an ideal sensor to capture social signals for three reasons: (1) social cameras naturally secure the best view because the wearers or holders intelligently localize the best view point to attend to what they find interesting; (2) social cameras produce more views of events of greater interest; (3) social cameras efficiently capture socially important events by following social behaviors when the scenes are dynamic. We leverage these advantages of social cameras to understand social scenes. We present a framework to develop social cognition by perceiving social signals, modeling the relationship between them, and predicting social behaviors. Social Signal Reconstruction: Reconstructing social signals in a unified 3D coordinate system provides a computational basis to analyze social scenes, e.g., to build a model, reason about relationships, and predict social behaviors. We leverage social cameras to reconstruct three types of social signals: gaze movement, body motion, and general scene motion. (1) Gaze is a strong indicator of attentive behaviors. We model the gaze using the primary gaze direction that is emitted from the center of the eyes and aligned with the head orientation. This gaze model is reconstructed in 3D by leveraging ego- and exo-motion of social cameras. (2) Human body motion such as gestures often conveys intent of social interactions. We model skeletal motion using a set of articulated joint trajectories where the distance between the trajectories of adjacent joints remains constant. This articulation constraint in conjunction with a temporal constraint is applied to reconstruct human body motion without an activity specific prior. (3)We further relax the articulation constraint to model general scene motion occurring in social interactions. We represent a 3D trajectory using a linear combination of predefined trajectory basis vectors. We solve for the parameters of each trajectory by formulating it as a linear least squares system that allows us to reconstruct topology-independent motion and handle missing data. Social Behavior Understanding: Social behaviors are interactive by definition and therefore, an individual behavioral analysis in isolation cannot fully account for the fundamental relationship between behaviors. For instance, a social signal transmitted by one person can trigger responses in other and the responses can, in turn, affect the behavior of the person. A relational analysis between the signals is needed to characterize the social interactions. We exploit the reconstructed social signals in a unified coordinate system to understand the relationship between them. In particular, our analysis focuses on joint attention, the primary social attribute that is strongly corv related with attentive behaviors. We present a method to reconstruct 3D joint attention modeled by social charges—latent quantities that form at locations where primary gaze directions of members in a social group intersect. Inspired by the study of electric fields, we model the relationship between gaze behaviors using a gradient field induced by the social charges. This gradient field allows us to predict gaze behaviors given social charges at any location in the scene. Our overarching goal is to develop computational social cognition that will enable artificial agents to accomplish their tasks in a socially acceptable way. This thesis takes a first step towards the goal by leveraging social cameras. We present a 3D representation of social signals and based on the reconstructed signals, we build a relational model of social behaviors, which allows us to predict the behaviors. We apply our frameworks in real-world social scenes including sporting events, meetings, and parties.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

In this thesis, I developed machine learning methods that would support tools for gaining health insights from social media images. On the one hand, I have helped create a dataset for food image segmentation and a segmentation network for this task, a task that is very relevant for understanding the nutritional content of food from images. I also explored the flip side of the issue, and helped design an interface that users can use to explore food recipes in machine learning-driven ways. On the other hand, I helped create a dataset and model for classifying types of disasters given images of natural or manmade disasters.

Abstract:
Previous studies have shown that practice can improve adults’ ability to discriminate between two similar high frequency spatial patterns. Adults trained on this task also demonstrated significant improvement on a standard acuity test which is dependent on high frequency information. The aim of this study was to extend the range of training patterns to low (1.7 c/deg) and middle (4.0 c/deg.) spatial frequencies, and to determine if practice in a similar spatial frequency discrimination task would transfer to other spatial tasks dependent on low frequency information. Fourteen subjects in three age groups (young, middle and old) were tested before and after training on four spatial tasks: grating discrimination, grating detection, bisection thresholds and Vernier acuity. Adults trained on 1.7 c/deg showed significant improvement on the discriminability task, while those trained on 4.0 c/deg did not. It was found that improvement on the low spatial frequency discrimination task did not transfer to any of the other tasks. However, it was shown that the degree of improvement was similar for all age groups. This suggests that plasticity in the human visual system remains relatively constant throughout adulthood.

Abstract:
Since the railway was constructed through Skövde in the 1850s, it has served as both barrier and catalyst for growth and overall development. Today, the sparse area surrounding the station faces large-scale develop- ment in terms of office buildings and parking garages, thus reinforcing the barrier through the city. With social sustainability and public life as starting point, the project suggests an alternative scenario by identify- ing and injecting the city’s inherent qualities into the area.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to explain how companies can think about creating, implementing and realizing business visions. I have conducted a literature study on the concept of vision showing that it is not clear what a vision means and how the process looks from idea to reality. By compiling previous research on the subject and investigate why companies succeed or fail with their visions I saw a connection and an approach on working with visions that I called the SIR process, which is based on three phases how visions can be created, implemented and realized in companies. To see how the process can help companies to work towards visions, I used the SIR-process on a qualitative case study conducted on employees at different levels within one and the same company. The interviews show that there is a lack of knowledge about what the concept of vision is and that all employees relate differently to the company's vision. The results show that there is a difference in how the company works with different visions within the same company. It also appears that working towards visions is a multi-phase process that can contribute to common goals and a direction to move against. One learning is that using the SIR-process, companies with or without an existing vision may get a guidance on how to create, implement and realize their business visions. Keywords: Vision, Create, Implement, Realize

Abstract:
In contemporary American political life, concepts such as duty to country and society often play a role in political discourse, but are often forgotten in the lives of average Americans. The life of the average citizen is focused on issues of economic survival, familial matters, and the diversions that occupy persons. Devotion to country is made an at best secondary concern for Americans. The purpose of this work is to examine the concepts of civic virtue that historically have dominated American political thought, using the writings of Thomas Jefferson and his influences as the primary source material for this effort, as well as the writings of modern western political theorists. Through this work, a conflict emerges between the values of western liberal thought and classic republicanism; to this end, a secondary purpose of this work is to reconcile those differences in an American context. Finally, a third purpose of this work is to offer a theoretical plan for re-connecting the average citizen with concepts of civic virtue through a proposal for public service.

Abstract:
Background: Social exclusion of people with vision impairments is an ongoing issue. Since social inclusion emphasizes social and emotional aspects as distinct from academic ones and the aspects concerning opportunities, the focus is turned on the domain of social interactions and friendships. Adolescence is the time point when youth feels mostly the need to ‘fit in’ in social circles and groups and the social life and friendships are important aspects of young people’s well-being and development. Aim: The aim of this study is to review the existing literature on the social interactions and friendships of adolescents with visual impairments from their own perspective and investigate the interventions designed to improve their social interactions and friendships. Method: A literature search on the databases of ERIC, CINAHL and PsycINFO and a hand search on the reference lists of the relevant articles was conducted. The search was limited to recent peer reviewed studies published in English, reporting perspectives of adolescents (13-18 years old) with visual impairments on their social interactions and friendships and intervention studies aimed to support them in the aforementioned domain. Results: In the 18 included studies, adolescents with vision impairments engaged more in passive activities that were not highly interactive. They reported being satisfied with their networks and friends, however contradictions existed in the perceived quality of friendships and the feeling of loneliness. The context of school was presented often as problematic compared to other contexts, and friendships in schools were rare. According to adolescents’ voices, friendships helped to cope with the impairment, friends had a meaningful role in their life and they made school life more enjoyable. In comparison to their sighted peers, adolescents with vision impairments had smaller networks and less friends with whom they had different type of relationships. Lastly even though several barriers and facilitators were identified, which belong to domains of Body functions and structures and Physical, Attitudinal and Social environment, there was a lack of interventions aiming to support the social interactions and friendships of adolescents with vision impairments. Conclusions: Considering the importance of social interactions and friendships in adolescents’ life for them to learn, develop and enjoy, more interventions with social focus need to be designed in respect to the challenges that exist. A plethora of barriers and facilitators impacting the social interactions and friendships of adolescents with vision impairments were identified that need to be taken into consideration for future research and interventions since the existing literature provided so far is limited. Adolescents need to be engaged in this process so that their interests, preferences and their views are prioritized.

This thesis is about the Swedish armed forces and the equality goals which have been established to give equal opportunities between the sexes and to encourage more women to join the armed forces. More specifically this study is about the women of the armed forces and whether they believe that these equality goals have been achieved or not. The thesis is based on interviews with three female officers employed by the Swedish armed forces. They answered questions regarding their experiences of the equality goals and about their day to day life regarding their job as well as questions about their social life. The conclusion of this thesis is that the armed forces in general seem to be good employer regarding equality, regardless of the women’s individual lifestyles, but that there is still work to do regarding the equality between the sexes.

Abstract:
Stereotypes and prejudices towards different ethnic groups held by people from an extremely impoverished area in Callao, Peru were studied. A mixed methodology was designed, comprised of a survey study (n = 115) and four focus groups (n = 30). Results show the existence of specific stereotypes to represent groups of high (Whites) and low status (Andeans, Amazonians and Afro-Peruvians). Every assessed group was described through ambivalent stereotyping contents. Results show that white people were perceived as instrumentalist, corrupts and non-patriotic while low status groups were seen as low in instrumentalism but warmth and sympathetic. Comparing these results with Espinosa, Calderon, Guimac and Burga (2007), it becomes evident that stereotyping representations held by people of poor strata are structurally similar to those held by people of middle-class groups. However, prejudice toward high status groups’ members is stronger among poor respondents when compared with middle class respondents, because impoverished people are likely to consider members of high status groups as individuals with discriminatory and excluding behaviors against people of low status groups.

Abstract:

Lancaster, Nicholas James. "The role of managerial vision : a cognitive and social perspective of ICI Paints." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23081.

Full text
Abstract:
A failure to properly perceive commercial conditions requiring innovation and a failure to understand the underlying nature of technological change are typically said to engender a reluctance to innovate. Explanations of why mature firms in particular, are slow to innovate, frequently draw upon technological, economic or strategic descriptions. However, human interaction and understanding are suggested as being 'at the heart' of the process. Consequently, this thesis considers the cognitive and social nature of managerial vision and its role in stimulating innovation within ICI Paints. Drawing upon a Situated Cognition perspective, a broad exploratory account of the role of the cognitive and social mechanisms of vision and the role of agency and structure by which technology is shaped and developed, suggests several conceptual areas where a cognitive approach may complement sociological approaches to technological change. The account suggests that the content of managerial vision is shaped through a personal discourse, shared practice and 'apprenticeship' learning and remains open to revision within the boundaries of 'ground rules and agreed prejudice'. Beliefs concerning future innovation opportunity are exchanged, modified and appropriated through a continuous social narrative, with an order of shared meaning provided by the cultural heritage of the firm, the specification of a particular technology and the 'legitimising' influence of 'communities of practice'. Consequently, the construction, development and transmission of 'vision' is situated within the meaning that existing practice and technology has for individuals.

Abstract:
Stockholm is a city that is constantly growing. In line with the population increase, there has been increased demand for housing and expanded community service, skills, capital and investments etc.The rapid increase in population brings challenges in terms of urban planning and growing social and economic differences between districts in Stockholm. Segregation and income distribution have increased, and residents in Stockholm also tend to live in socio-economically homogeneous areas. Inorder for all the city's actors to work towards the same goal, the City of Stockholm has developed avision that will be fulfilled by the year 2040. The goal is for Stockholm to become a big city that isversatile, sustainably growing and dynamic as well as smart and innovative. Hagastaden is considered to be an important part of the city's realization of the vision. The new city will be formed by connecting Solna and Stockholm. The goal is to develop the city into an inclusive neighborhood for people in different stages of life, with different conditions, needs and interests. A challenge with the project is mentioned to be the difficulty to include all socio-economic groups in the city, as newly-manufactured housing is relatively expensive. This may contribute to increased social gaps, unequal life chances, exclusion and reduced social cohesion in the society. This development is not good for neither individuals nor for society at large. The purpose of this bachelor's thesis has been to, through qualitative literature studies and interviews, examine whether Hagastaden contributes to further growing social and economic differences in Stockholm and whether the housing construction in the city contributes to a more socially inclusiveand sustainable city. We have based on the goals that have been set for Vision 2040 and compared to what the project contributes to society. The results showed that it has been difficult to include socio-economic groups when it comes to housing. On the other hand, they are included by making the district accessible to anyone and easy to navigate through. Hagastaden has succeeded in becoming an innovative, versatile and experience-rich city. There is a mix of housing supply, but since the city only consists of newly-manufactured housings, low-income earners cannot afford to move there. It is acknowledged to be a challenge to include the socio-economic group, but it is also pointed out that the current housing policy is the reason why the situation is as it is today.

To manage with this purpose we interviewed two case managers, two clients with mental disabilities and five family members. We have come to the conclusion that the case managers works more consist of advocacy than empowerment. Despite that we have found that the long term goal for the case mangers work is to give the clients tools for empowerment. Our results also show that the clients feel that they have gained and increased their ability to do things by themselves and to be a part of the community. The family members feel that they have been empowered because of that the case managers have given them advises of how they can support the clients in a better way, which have released them from family burdens.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Past research demonstrates that fearful faces lead to an increase in temporal and a decrease in spatial gap detection, an effect proposed to be caused by a flow of input to the magnocellular pathways from the amygdala to the visual system (Bocanegra & Zeelenberg, 2009). The amygdala is also active for positive and arousing stimuli, including happy faces. The current study extends past research by presenting happy facial cues just before a gap detection task. Facial stimuli (i.e., happy/neutral faces) were presented in the periphery of the receptive field and quickly followed by a Landolt circle. Half of the participants were asked to detect a temporal gap and half a spatial gap. Response accuracy of gap detection was measured using signal detection theory. Consistent with past research on fearful faces, positive expressions were expected to facilitate temporal gap detection but not spatial gap detection when happy faces were used as cues in gap detection tasks. The current study found no difference in spatial or temporal gap detection given the emotional cue that preceded gap detection on each trial. Positive emotion did not appear to have the same impact as fear on the amygdala and visual areas involving attention.

Abstract:

Leadership is a phenomenon studied in all cultures (Murdock, 1967), yet representation in the diversity of influential leaders is often limited (Moon, 1996). In order to understand the full breadth of leadership scholarship, it is essential that research focuses on how leadership is both enacted and communicated in underrepresented groups. A group that is currently facing marginalization from dominant culture is the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. With no national anti-discrimination law in place to protect the individuals belonging to this community (American Civil Liberties Union, 2016) it is vital to understand how leaders within this marginalized group are motivating others to fight to enact change. While influential organizations like The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) are fighting for social justice on a national level, it is important to understand how local organizations are engaging in communicative leadership to motivate others to enact change in their own community. This study seeks to understand how leadership is communicated within a local LGBT rights organization (given the pseudonym the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Campaign, or LGBTC) and to identify the ways LGBT leaders motivate others to enact social change. Using ethnographic methodology, the researcher observed four monthly board meetings held by this group (lasting approximately an hour and a half each) and conducted a focus-group interview where the participants confirmed observations and answered follow-up questions from the ethnographic observations. A qualitative thematic analysis revealed two common themes: the first theme, cohesive communication, was exemplified through organizational procedures that allowed for collective discussion and expression of individuality by emphasizing and depending on group members’ personal expertise. The second theme, proactive communication, emerged through group members’ communication to evoke tenacious defense strategies to counter the opposition and engage in outreach with external organizations. These leadership communication behaviors resulted in two critical implications on the theoretical and practical levels. In regards to the theoretical implications, LGBT leaders, who have been typically characterized as predominantly transformational, were found to enact leadership outside of that typology, actually engaging in relational styles through shared leadership, communicating in a way that relies on interaction and emotional expression. On a practical level, other marginalized groups could benefit from inclusivity, or the mode of collective leadership this particular LGBT Rights Group engaged in. By including multiple voices and having a variety of minority representation, the LGBTC was able to successfully motivate community change. Other marginalized groups experiencing social injustice may be able to motivate others to enact change by adopting this mode of collective communication through shared leadership.

Deike, Michael W. "Tundale’s Vision: Socialization in 12th Century Ireland." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2014. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/182.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to explore the historical image of Hell in Medieval Europe as an agent of socialization for illiterate Christian communities. The project focuses on a literary work, Tundale’s Vision, written in 1149 C.E in Cashel, Ireland. Tundale’s Vision came from a genre of vision literature derived from popular oracular folk tradition surrounding the image of Hell that served the purpose of socializing Christian communities to certain social norms and stigmas presented by the author. Vision literature would be used by preachers in vernacular sermons throughout the Medieval period in order to reinforce moral and social messages presented in to their congregations, and it drew much of its themes and imagery from folk traditions in order to be more relatable to local communities. This research provides a historical context from which this genre of literature emerged including a discourse on how it gained power as an agent of socialization in Medieval Europe. Time is devoted to the historical state of what are generally considered primary agents of socialization in human societies throughout Medieval Europe, and research reveals that much of these agents, aside from religion, were inaccessible to the majority of Medieval Europeans, especially those of the lower class. Additionally, this project provides information on the rise in popularity of the artistic image of Hell in the Medieval period. The analysis of Tundale’s Vision, a work that emerged from this environment saturated with artistic depictions of Hell, reconstructs potential social norms and stigmas of 12th century Ireland relating to a contemporary reform movement within the Irish Christian church. This analysis provides the historical origin of many images commonly associated with the popular Medieval conception of Hell as it appears in Tundale’s Vision, and it analyzes the use of the fear of a painful afterlife in order spread and reinforce ideals presented by the Christian Church. Much of this project draws from the scholarly works of Gwenfair Adams and John Seymour who produced research concerning Tundale’s Vision, other works of vision literature, and their impact on Medieval Christian communities. The power of religious artwork in the process of socialization in Medieval Ireland should become apparent throughout this work.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The strong emphasis on ecclesiology in the work of Stanley Hauerwas, John Milbank and others associated with ‘the new ecclesiology’1 brings theological challenges to the contemporary move to recast practical theology’s attention to church and society as ‘public theology’. A historical reading of three key examples of practice in the tradition of twentieth century Scottish reformed-ecumenical reflection on ‘church and society’ displays a rich seam of reflection on ecclesiology, with some significant affinities to ‘the new ecclesiology’. The work of Stanley Hauerwas is used to develop a critical reading of the practices of theology and the theologies of (church and world) practice embedded in each example. This leads to the claim that ‘the new ecclesiology’ offers practical theology a way of articulating the church-world relationship and expressing the social, political and cultural witness of Christianity within Scotland which is to be preferred to the rubric of ‘public theology’. Its appeal for practical theology in the face of church decline and the marginalisation of theological discourse within liberal culture lies not in a temptation towards the comforts of “sectarianism”, but in its confession of the “ironic” character of the politics of Jesus and the reign of God. Its promise for practical theology lies in its claim to offer a narrative display of how theology as “church pragmatics” can mediate a fruitful social, political and cultural imagining of the world Scotland is and the world it is called to be.

Wasswa, John Baptist. "The exploration of the impact of state ownership on Uganda's New Vision Newspaper's social role." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002948.

Abstract:
The global trends of democratisation and privatisation that swept much of the developing world in the 1980s and 1990s led to significant changes in the conceptualisation, organisation and performance of the media. In Africa democratisation attained a new meaning with associated processes of liberalisation of broadcasting to end the monopoly of broadcasting by the state. The private media of the liberalised market is increasingly putting the public media system, both broadcast and print, under serious competition, and forcing them to adjust to changing circumstances. The New Vision newspaper in Uganda is one such public service media organisations that are owned by the state and yet have to compete in the new more democratic and liberalised environment. This study set out to explore the extent to which state-ownership impacts on The New Vision’s social role. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods of date collection, I have established the that although The New Vision is a public service medium for which government remains the major source of news, it does not in most cases give the state more or preferentially prominent coverage at the expense of other interest groups in society. On contrary, basing of the amount of coverage of civil society I established that The New Vision enabled the various groups public sphere to interact. The newspaper to an extent also plays the democratic role of monitoring government although there was little evidence of monitoring of corporate abuse. The nature of The New Vision Statute, and the global trends that have changed the conduct of official and private business, have rendered the theories on the 1980s’ development media theories increasingly inapplicable, forcing The New Vision to develop its own version of development journalism that is socially relevant. The study recommends that whereas much of The New Vision Statute is progressive, sections of it should be removed to protect the newspaper from being manipulated by government functionaries, if the it is to continue enabling the public sphere. The newspaper should also increase its monitoring of corporate abuse, and make internal reforms to improve the coverage of development related issues.

Abstract:

Griggs, David. "Aging and Spatio-temporal Vision: Effects of Blur on Localization Task Performance." TopSCHOLAR®, 1987. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1997.

Abstract:
The aim of this project was to examine age-related declines in the processing of spatial frequency information. Some current theories of spatial vision state that humans process high spatial frequency information separately or differently from low spatial frequency information. There is also evidence that normal aging may affect the processing of some spatial frequencies more than others. Specifically, it has been proposed that older adults have deficits in their ability to process low spatial frequency information, and that older adults process visual information more slowly in general than young adults. Eight observers in each of three age groups were tested on a localization task. The spatial frequency content of distractors presented in the visual field was varied along with speed of presentation and clarity of the display. A progressive loss in the extent of the functional visual field was demonstrated. Results were consistent with the position that older adults experience declines in their ability to process temporal information, and that older adults do process visual information at a slower rate than young adults.

Platt, Daniel. ""A Strangely Organic Vision": Postmodernism, Environmental Justice, and the New Urbanist Novel." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18750.

Abstract:
My dissertation examines critical engagements with the "new urbanist" movement in late 20th and early 21st century U.S. novels, including Karen Tei Yamashita's Tropic of Orange, Helena María Viramontes's Their Dogs Came with Them, and Colson Whitehead's Zone One. I argue that these novels reflect new urbanism's valorization of neighborhoods that are walkable, green, and diverse, even as they critique the movement's inattention to environmental injustice and the long history of urban rights movements. Moreover, I argue that contemporary fiction's engagement with new urbanism has driven formal and stylistic innovation in the novel. The "new urbanist novel," I argue, blends elements of the postmodern literary mode, such as metafiction and narrative fragmentation, with elements that are arguably anti-postmodern, such as representations of stable collective identity and utopian visions of organic urban community.

Abstract:

Species-specific differences in visual acuity have been demonstrated across species of cichlids differing in social and habitat complexity. What is the role of plasticity? A visual acuity assay on two species of fish reared in different habitat and social complexity was used to study brain plasticity in Xenotilapia flavipinnis and Asprotilapia leptura juveniles. The X. flavipinnis lives in sandy habitats and schools as juveniles. These fry were raised in an impoverished social environment in one case and an enriched habitat environment in another. The A. leptura lives in rocky habitats naturally. These fry were raised in an impoverished habitat environment. All conditions were compared to control groups with natural social and habitat conditions. I found that a change in social complexity had a plastic effect on visual acuity but a change in habitat complexity in both cases did not

Abstract:
ABSTRACT   Title:                 The dialogue of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility  Subtitle:            Based on entrepreneur’s values-based vision   Keywords:        Corporate governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, Values-Based Service, Values, New Governance   Problem:          Scholars and the business world have often viewed CG and CSR as parallel. But because globalization and the existence of MNEs has weakened government control, NGOs and other stakeholders are pressuring MNEs for transparency, accountability and disclosure in their global activities which involve social, environmental and ethical dilemmas. Stakeholders are also pressuring companies for values resonance.        Purpose:           The purpose of this research is to assess the integration of corporate governance and CSR based on an entrepreneur’s values-based vision.   Methodology:  This exploratory research was conducted using a qualitative approach and the case study research method. Data collected included IKEA annual reports from 2003-2010 and external reports as well as information from relevant scientific articles and research books. A deductive approach was taken to analyze data through an interpretative procedure.    Conclusions:    The VBS of a company takes into consideration CSR and all resource integrators. However, CSR is not sufficient in itself to create a fully VBS company. There is need for CG principles to accomplish CSR strategies, goals and values that must be in resonance with other stakeholders’ values. Thus New Governance which is empowered by NGOs is a catalyst for the convergence and integration of CG and CSR in companies. We think that the business case of IKEA needs new governance to become a complete VBS.

Abstract:
The topic of Corporate Social Responsibility has been largely discussed. Thus, it is important to know how this issue is being discussed in undergraduate classes of Business Administration. The purpose of this study was to explore the student’s vision of CSR and their view about the teaching of CSR in undergraduate courses. Thirty Administration students of Rio de Janeiro were interviewed. The results showed that the respondents are concerned about this issue, since they consider that it is important for the practice of Administration. Some respondents said that the space given to CSR in the university is inadequate and, thus, it should be greater. They also said that the approach could be improved, since sometimes it is considered a superficial approach, although the content is correct. Many respondents learned more about it out of university, such as in magazines, newspapers, or at work. Many respondents had a more restricted view about the definition of CSR. The majority addressed only a few dimensions of it, showing little knowledge about it. Some respondents have doubts about CSR, especially basic questions, concerning the concept of the theme. Others have also showed doubts regarding the practice of CSR. Many respondents believe that the university where they study is not able to train socially responsible managers, since the theme is not much discussed. Moreover, it was observed that those who had experience in the area were more secure during the interviews; however, there were few respondents who had used CSR in practice.
