Abstract:
This article offers a history of the wave metaphor in social theory, examining how waves became rhetorical forms through which to think about the shape of social change. The wave analytic—“waves of democratization,” “waves of immigration,” “waves of resistance”—wavers between high theory and popular model, between objectivist sociological explanation and hand-waving sociobabble, between vanguardist predictions of social revolution and conservative prognoses of political inevitability, between accountings of formal change and claims about material transubstantiation. The article examines usages in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, arguing that techniques of inscription—graphical, numerical, diagrammatic—have produced formal claims about rising and falling tendencies in the social body. It argues, too, that in such deployments, waves are either (1) overpowering forces of social structuration or (2) signs of the animating effects of world-transforming collective social agencies. The “wave” thus generates questions—and uncertainties—about the relation of structure to agency.

Abstract:
Abstract This article argues that the theory of social representations can give valuable contributions to media research. It offers a new theory-based approach for studying how the media and citizens socially represent societal and political issues colouring our age, or some specific time period. Two fundamental communicative mechanisms – anchoring and objectification – are posited by the theory. These mechanisms, with a set of subcategories, are presented and it is shown how they can be used as conceptual analytical tools in empirical analysis. Concrete examples are given from a study on climate change and the media.

Abstract:
IntroductionContemporary social theory is conventionally addresed from withinthe dominant tradition of inquiry. Rarely is it subject to a criticalreflection from beyond its own ken. This is a pity, for the subject matterand scope of social theory go beyond the confines of any exclusivetradition, while its reach and influence in the global context of our timesmerely reinforce its extended compass. Given the fact that the ambitiousclaims made by social theorists about the univetsality of their project arehardly borne out by the reality, any pretensions at exclusivism orhegemony would be as anachronistic as they are morally reprehensible. The gap between the legitimate ambitions for a universally relevant socialtheory and the mdity of a field grounded in its historical coflstral.l lt sandcultural prejudices can be filled only by a critical and constructiveinitiative taken from within the profession to constitute a candid, open, and reflexive self-encounter. The opportuneness for such an initiative isenhanced by its urgency: the discrepancies that follow on the ineptitudeof our social knowledge can only raise doubts about the relevance of ourscience to our social condition. In deploring the tesulting ineptitude and irrelevance, it is possible todo so in the voice of a genemlized subject, the universal "I," for surelythis is one of the ateas of convergence where scholats from different traditionscould agree. The measure of this agreement can only be gaugedby remembering that "a science for the study of society" originally wentbeyond its grounding in scientific reason to its justification in a moralreasoning. And here, regardless of the grounding of that morality, we findanother significant area of convergence for scholars working in different ...

Abstract:
This paper presents a review of social theories of aging including early theories based on role, disengagement, activity, and continuity, and more recent theories based on modernization, feminism, gerotranscendence, and interactionism. The elements, assumptions and possible biases, and strengths and weaknesses of each major theory are discussed. Since gerontology is multidisciplinary, the variety of theoretical perspectives can be viewed as a strength of this particular field. Similarly, the theories have foci representing micro and macro approaches, functional and conflict approaches, social structural and social psychological approaches, and historical and economic approaches. The possibility of Euro-centric and male-centric biases of theory should not be ignored. Cross-cultural research can further contribute to refining and strengthening the social gerontology knowledge base and its value informing a wider diversity of areas, including public health and medicine.
