Abstract:

Brazilian telenovelas have always been very popular in Portugal but in the last years this popularity is decreasing. It seems Portuguese audiences prefer Portuguese telenovelas instead. Why is this so? Within the context of the relationship between Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese identity and theories of cultural exchange and cultural appropriation, this essay, through interviews to ten different subjects, tries to analyse why this is happening.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper explores the psychological concept of identity and how popular culture may be used as a theme in art therapy for exploring and repairing life story. The literature review defines identity from varying perspectives with emphasis on awareness of parallels between popular culture and the client’s personal story. These parallels may offer art therapists a framework of images and memories useful specifically to exploring identity development with clients. The case study places client’s identity into the context of popular culture unique to the experiences of the client at varying life stages.

Abstract:
This research synthesis investigates the effects that popular culture and new forms of mediation have had on the teaching and learning of English. Further, it examines some key aspects worth consideration when applying these types of texts in an educational context. The English syllabus for upper secondary school advises teachers to make use of the outside world for resources, and teach the students how to access, gather, analyze and use information found in different types of texts. After initial struggles, due to teachers’ reluctance, popular culture and modern media has found its way in to most classrooms and studies have shown different effects that the introduction of these texts have had on teaching and learning of English. Firstly, there has been a shift in how many teachers approach texts by letting students take more responsibility by participating in the selection process of different texts. Moreover, some studies have shown the effects popular culture and digital media have had on the acquisition of literacy skills. Study results suggest that primarily, students critical skills have developed, and that “out of school literacies” have helped students develop more traditional literacy skills such as reading and writing. However, this research synthesis concludes by saying that more research measuring the acquisition of traditional English using popular culture and digital media skills over longer periods of time involving more students would allow one to answer more accurately what effects they have had.

Abstract:
During the past few decades, anthropologists have become increasingly interested in how different cultural frameworks come together. One opportunity to view such interactions is presented by travel seminars based on a transformative education model, which aim to educate middle-class people about conditions in economically depressed areas through travel. The task of this thesis is to examine the experiences of U.S. participant groups in one transformative education program, paying particular attention to interpersonal contact, both within groups and between them and local people, and to how participants experience the location of poverty. I argue that multiple factors play a role in terms of whether, how, and why trip participants appear to form new meanings based on their experiences. These factors include the individual's ability to empathize with the 'Other' (i.e. local people) met on the trip and previous experience in and knowledge of economically depressed areas, especially the Third World.

Marchis, Mouren Laure. Thesis, Avignon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017AVIG1180/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Can a two-century old local tradition survive the globalization of leisure and recreation? When it comes to bull racing, studying the audience/spectators is important. Extensive bull-breeding, which is one of the main industries in Camargue, is not really profitable and cannot survive by breeding bulls for racing alone. The common assumption is that the spectators of Camargue bull races tend to be rather old rural folks. If this is really the case, the future of bull racing and the ecological balance of the territory depend on audience renewal of taurine culture. Little known outside Provence and Languedoc, taurine events remain quite popular in Camargue and surrounding areas. Why is the interest of locals for these so-called “traditions” so keen? As we started interviewing aficionados for this research we were able to outline a social field (Bourdieu, 1992) for Camargue bull racing. This thesis, pertaining to Information and Communication sciences, focuses on the field of Camargue bull racing. This field is fairly autonomous, yet relies on the social, economic and political context. It belongs to a universe of conflicting interests and power struggles between social actors. A quantitative survey compiled from 626 questionnaires provides a first outline of the audiences of Camargue bull racing. Several transmission mechanisms have been identified. Intergenerational transmission is complemented by an integration mechanism that transcends the field’s borders. Aficionados act as mediators for first-time spectators and the feeling of belonging to the “bouvine” community strengthens the field

Abstract:

Abstract:
The use of social media has experienced an extraordinary growth in Morocco, along with the introduction of Internet at the end of the 20th century. The booming of Internet users with the quick spreading of both devices and connectivity has created a new area of expression far different than the official discourse the Moroccan public was used to. The take-over of the online space in Morocco has shown new types of communication and protest that are completely in opposition with the official media discourse. Among the various social media tools that are used in Morocco today, YouTube is a one of the most popular, for both producing and watching content. This thesis investigates the use of YouTube in Morocco, both in an official way and as a counter-power tool, mainly highlighting the emerging of oppositional popular cultural discourse and its diverse aspects.

Abstract:
xi, 249 p. : ill. (some col.)
Globalization has inaugurated many rapid changes in local communities throughout the world. The globalization of media, both electronic and print, has introduced new pressures for local communities to confront while also opening up new imaginative possibilities. As many observers have noted, transnational media transform local public cultures, or shared imaginative spaces, but never in predictable, totally hegemonic ways. This dissertation focuses on the efforts of a small Hindu community called the Hindu Prachar Kendra located in Trinidad, West Indies, as they develop critical strategies that help their children read, negotiate, and in some cases contribute to local and global public cultures. I argue that though many Hindu parents and teachers of the Kendra share anxieties about the effects of local and global popular cultures on their children, they also use many features, ideas, and texts emerging from imaginative media in creative ways. Furthermore, their concerns about media shape their interpretation and instruction of Hindu practice.

Abstract:
Though brands are created and maintained using many different management strategies, market and academic research has offered evidence that brands presenting the strongest personalities are more likely to perform better and resonate longer with consumers. This paper examines the components of brand personality using connections between contemporary branding and 13 classic archetypes. The study also discusses the life cycle of the brand, including development of brand personality and achievement of iconic status in conjunction with archetypal marketing. The research of Faber and Mayer (2009) is the basis for an analysis measuring participant attitudes toward popular brands by matching them with archetypal descriptions and explores possible correlation between product category and archetype. Results show evidence for high levels of participant agreement when categorizing archetypal representations of popular brands as well as consistency across product category. Results are also indicative of a relationship between gender and archetype selection.

Abstract:
Within the last three decades, contemporary North America came to reinvent a socially focused genre of literary personal narratives. These new editorial and writing projects, published in the form of collections of personal narratives, emerged as a tool for the socially voiceless to secure some measure of agency in their contemporary social and cultural situation. Projects such as the Freedom Writers’ Diary or volumes of the Voice of Witness book series fit in the process that is currently labeled social empowerment. Witnesses express a deep urge to share their story in the hope to denounce their experience of an enduring social injustice. The written word, primary a means for self-disclosure, serves to exorcise the suffering associated to this specific predicament. The narrators engage in a powerful self-investigative gesture oriented towards resilience and renewed enfranchisement in regaining control over their life and environment. At the moment of publication, however, these testimonies come to be validated as authentic examples of the injustices they disclose. These examples serve an educational purpose: raising the audience’s awareness and opening deliberative fora for these issues to be discussed and for solutions to be hammered out and eventually implemented.

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a theoretical model for the subgenre of testimonials of social empowerment. With the concept of empowerment as groundwork, the model develops a textual approach framed in a psychosocial structure. I argue that testimonials may be described as examples of Jürgen Habermas’s communicative action. As speech acts aimed at reaching understanding, testimonials capitalize both on the binding and bonding aspects of illocutionary force in the hope to secure with their audience an ongoing dialogue over issues of social justice. The volumes, as unofficial public spheres, mobilize the normative and practical dynamics at work in social movements. These dynamics express as two narrative guiding threads: an aesthetic based on impact, and an ethics based on responsibility. The texts’ aesthetic develops a form of perlocutionary realism instantiating a sense of authenticity and sincerity embodied in the narrators’ voices. The resulting impact is coupled to moral concerns based on a polysemic understanding of social responsibility, on which narrators seek to build their narratives’ ethical potential. A series of case studies allowed to demonstrate that both narrative threads are realized as an appropriation of four paradigmatic forms of rhetorical ethos, each based on a specific realm of the social world: intimacy, justice, spirituality and activism.

Jenkins, Gregory Kendall. "The Altered Mobile Home: A Stationary Image of Work and Value." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1712.

Full text
Abstract:
As the medium cost of conventional housing rises, many people unable to incur such an expense look for alternative forms of adequate housing. In rural areas surrounding Bowling Green, Kentucky, several families have utilized the mobile home as a base to expand, embellish, and personalize, creating a larger more conventional-looking home. Many of these altered homes possess gabled roofs, rock exterior walls, and expansive interior space. Of primary concern is: why have these families undertaken a project of this nature? As material culture scholars and folklorists examine our built environment, they find relationship between construction and the builders. What can the altered mobile home tell us about these individual builders? A contextual analysis examining the surrounding landscape, economic dilemmas, and personal aesthetics and values help elucidate each altered mobile home. Also, by examining the individual builder’s work technique, materials, and values associated with housing, one can understand how each mobile home is a direct reflection of its owner. Since the mobile home’s creation, the public’s conception of the form has led to claims that it is not a housing form, but rather an accessory for the automobile. Steadfast values associated with housing have not adhered to the image of the mobile home. Because of this ambiguity, the mobile home is an ideal form for individuals to mold and alter, thereby creating a form imbued with personal aesthetics and personal values concerning housing. These ideas are examined through analysis of four families.

Johansson, Åsa. "Natureculture Origined : An intersectional feminist study of notions of the natural, the healthy and the Palaeolithic past in the popular science imaginary of biomechanics." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Tema Genus, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-121249.

Full text
Abstract:
Situated in a time of advanced technoscience and new materialist feminist humanities/social sciences, this thesis explores how popular science renditions of biomechanics contribute to transforming imaginaries about “the natural” and “healthy”. It does so by zooming in on biomechanical scientist Katy Bowman’s pervasive and life-style commitment-requiring teaching. Her books and online material conceptualise and connect a bodily dependency on adequate physical load environments to an imagined natural health of our Palaeolithic ancestors. Drawing on several postconventional fields gathered under the banner of feminist posthumanisms and posthumanities (Braidotti 2013; Åsberg 2014), this thesis demonstrates how gendered and otherwise intersectionally interpreted fantasies intra-act with Bowman’s specific bodily practices, constructing a natural with both limiting and liberating consequences. Notions of the natural in popularised biomechanics are here explored foremost with a focus on the formative categories of gender and class. More explicitly, the thesis shows how Bowman’s teaching, on the one hand, links well with theorisings of corporeal, environmental and material feminist scholars, such as Elizabeth Grosz’s (1994) and Stacy Alaimo’s (2010) notions of environed corporeality and trans-corporeality. On the other hand, though, Bowman’s popularised biomechanics simultaneously reinforces a troublesome nature-culture divide and neo-liberal discourses on health as choice. However, while downplaying sociocultural and economical factors, and underpinning essentialist notions of motherhood, Bowman’s popular science also destabilises masculine understandings of the natural as tough; acknowledges material, individual and collective agency; and, offers effective techniques for managing various health conditions – all in ways that may well be interpreted and practiced within feminist registers. Based on this example from Bowman’s popular science, the author argues that contemporary Western understandings of the natural are influenced by a longing for self-commitment, control and connectedness.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent years, old-hand development scholars, in the category of Dan Brockington, have expressed their concern over academia’s neglect of the significance of celebrities in the field. As has been the case of an outturn hereof, namely beauty pageants. In the last six decades, Venezuela has positioned itself not only as one of the world's largest exporters of oil but also as one of the leading engenderers of titleholders in international pageantry. The latter, which has resulted in Venezuelans regarding the pageant as a fundamental cultural undercurrent in their collective identity, seems to be a ceaseless manifestation in spite of the country’s worrisome current socio-economic status. Rather than adopting a condescending paradigm towards the Miss Venezuela pageant, it is precisely this vertex of ambiguity that opens the avenue for an interesting development question. After all, if celebrity beauty queens from Venezuela are deemed as part of the nation’s identity, could the pageant, in the same breath, be deemed as a contributor to communication for development? While espousing historical context as an analysing method and in pursuit of David Hulme’s Celebrity-Development nexus and Elizabeth McCall’s four strands of communication for development, this paper presents a qualitative study in which hands-on experts are given a platform. The findings show the evolution of a beauty pageant from a, nearly, nationalist device into a system that is grounded in the Millennium Development Goals and that aims to forge socially responsible beauty representatives that are competent enough to herald purposeful messages.

Abstract:
The wave of gurus in America brought with them cultural transformations particularly in how they interpret Hinduism, how their teachings have adapted in engaging a Western audience, and the sustainability of their religious communities, thus changing the landscape of contemporary Hindu spirituality. The traditional model of the guru and disciple relationship according to Yoga and Vedanta is undergoing a transformation allowing for greater autonomy of the disciple to make decisions in how they appropriate the authority of the guru. This thesis examines the guru and disciple relationship within the institutional organization of the Yoga Research Foundation, founded by the contemporary guru, Swami Jyotirmayananda. Research of Jyotirmayananda’s unique following of Western disciples illuminates the nature of his authority through the establishment of his order and methods by which disciples navigate identity formation and experience religious transmission.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
There is a lot of questions about the construction of elites, in particular about the challenges of cultural and educational democratization. An elite emerging from people can appear only when the society is opened enough, so that the human beings are not dependent from their social conditions of origin. According to the popular education movements such as People and Culture, the creation of an elite is the consequence of an active educational method based on a pooling of culture and the use of free time. This creation is necessary to avoid alienation and masses manipulation. At the end of the eighties, the model regarding the construction of a popular elite changed. Giving a social ascension to the popular layers has become a political need and a social demand. The thematic of equal opportunities is privileged. Positive discrimination programs are established. Supporting the young people coming from sensitive areas through academic success is a priority for the social promotion of human beings. We can ask ourselves about the composition of these elites, which appeared in the process of social transformation and on what they represent. Can we define popular education and equal opportunities as theoretical models for the inscription in the representations and social body of elites coming from all the social layers?

Abstract:
Over the past decades, the population in Canada has become increasingly culturally diverse. Therefore, helping professionals are required to provide services that are culturally appropriate and effective. The main purpose of this research project was to understand the experiences and perceptions of practitioners in the field of social work intervening with clients from different cultural backgrounds, the challenges, barriers and facilitators they encounter, as well as their views on how services can be improved. A qualitative approach was used, where in-depth, semi-structure interviews were conducted with nine front-line psychosocial workers from a local government agency in Montreal. Findings demonstrated how cultural and ethnic differences shape the psychosocial intervention process, as well as how participants defined cultural competence. Findings are discussed in reference to existing academic research on culturally competent practice. Participants' conceptualization of cultural competence paralleled some of the most common definitions in the literature, where awareness of one's own values and biases, as well as knowledge about the different cultures was essential. Moreover, the results showed a significant need for support and training for workers when intervening with culturally diverse clients. Implications for practice, policy and future research are presented.

Abstract:
With this study, the writers look to analyze the citizen participation process during the Project Culture Casbah in Rosengård, a part of Malmö city. The study develops around the theory of Arnsteins ladder of citizen participation which is used to define what is considered to be a genuine attempt at performing citizen participation within projects of different sorts. The writers look to categorize the process of citizen participation and find a reasonable step on Arnsteins ladder of citizen participation to put said project in. A document and literature analysis was conducted to help the writers come to a conclusion in terms of analyzing the project Culture Casbah. Interviews were conducted to inform ourselves about what the citizens consider would be the correct approach when planning in Rosengård, and more specifically when planning project Culture Casbah. Interviews were conducted in focus groups where age was a the main factor of grouping the people together. After those interviews where finished, an interview was conducted with a anonymous project group member that worked with the citizen participation process within the project Culture Casbah in mid 2014. Segregation and integration were used as themes to complement the difficulties in implementing genuine citizen participation in the project Culture Casbah. Mainly the works of authors Stiegendal and Grander were used when discussing segregation and integration. To put forward the importance of dialogue between citizens and authorities the reasonings of Healey were used, mainly from her book ‘’Urban complexity and spatial strategies’’ from 2007. The reasonings of Flyvbjerg were also relevant in this study because he brought forward points about rationalization and power, and how those affect citizens in lower social positions. The study emphasizes the process of genuine citizen participation by involving many different factors into the equation.

Senger, Saesha. "Gender, Politics, Market Segmentation, and Taste: Adult Contemporary Radio at the End of the Twentieth Century." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/music_etds/150.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores issues of gender politics, market segmentation, and taste through an examination of the contributions of several artists who have achieved Adult Contemporary (AC) chart success. The scope of the project is limited to a period when many artists who figured prominently in both the broader mainstream of American popular music and the more specific Adult Contemporary category were most commercially viable: from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. My contention is that, as gender politics and gendered social norms continued to change in the United States at this time, Adult Contemporary – the chart, the format, and the associated music – was an important, if overlooked or even trivialized, arena in which these shifting gender dynamics played out. This dissertation explores the significance of the Adult Contemporary format at the end of the twentieth century through analysis of chart performance, artist image, musical works, marketing, and contextual factors. By documenting these relevant social, political, economic, and musical factors, the notable role of a format and of artists neglected by scholars becomes clear. I explore these issues in the form of lengthy case studies. Examinations of how Adult Contemporary artists such as Michael Bolton, Wilson Phillips, Matchbox Twenty, David Gray, and Mariah Carey were produced and marketed, and how their music was disseminated, illustrate record and radio industry strategies for negotiating the musical, political, and social climate of this period. Significantly, musical and lyrical analyses of songs successful on AC stations, and many of their accompanying promotional videos highlight messages about musical genre, gender, race, and age. This dissertation ultimately demonstrates that Adult Contemporary-oriented music figured significantly in the culture wars, second and third wave feminism, expressions of masculinity, Generation-X struggles, postmodern identity, and market segmentation. This study also illustrates how the record and radio industries have managed audience composition and behavior to effectively and more predictably produce and market music in the United States. This dissertation argues that, amid broader social determinations for taste, the record industry, radio programmers, and Billboard chart compilers and writers have helped to make and reinforce certain assumptions about who listens to which music and why they do so. In addition, critics have weighed in on what different musical genres and artists have offered and for whom, often assigning higher value to music associated with certain genres, socio-political associations, and listeners while claiming over-commercialization, irrelevance, aesthetic insignificance, and bad taste for much other music.

Abstract:

The article mobilises the concept of strategic culture in order to identify the impact of history upon contemporary security policy. The article will first look at the "wholesale construction" of a strategic culture after the Second World War in West Germany before exploring its impact upon security policy since the end of the Cold War in two areas: the Bundeswehr's out-of-area role and conscription. The central argument presented here is that the strategic culture of the former Federal Republic now writ large on to the new united Germany sets the context within which security policies are designed. This strategic culture, as will be argued, acts as both a facilitating and a restraining variable on behaviour, making certain policy options possible and others impossible.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at initiating dialogue between Canadian and Indian constitutional cultures. Canadian constitutional law is arguably characterized by ideologies of liberalism and legal positivism. Because human rights norms are expected to incorporate a vision of social justice into the law, ideologies and legal philosophies are crucial to assess the potential and the limitations of human rights protections. The legal cultures in Canada and India have similar roots, and yet the systems have evolved differently. Among other factors, judicial activism and the quest for social justice of judges at the Supreme Court of India were significant in the evolution of Indian constitutional culture. From a Canadian perspective, it is interesting to study this culture as it offers new avenues in the human rights field and therefore challenges the universal value of human rights norms as interpreted and applied in Canada. This thesis argues that, on the intersection of human rights and social issues like poverty and social classes, important lessons can be drawn from the way the Supreme Court of India has based its human rights interpretation on contextual analyses of Indian social reality. The judges engaged in judicial activism sought to move beyond the traditional ideologies found in the common law, and their jurisprudence is helpful in grasping the limitations these ideologies can put on human rights interpretation.

Paddock, Jessica. "Class, food, culture : exploring 'alternative' food consumption." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/27436/.

Full text
Abstract:
Contributing empirically, methodologically and conceptually to the body of work that remains unconvinced of the ‘death of class’ (Pahl 1989), this thesis explores the resonance of class culture in contemporary ‘alternative’ food practice. Indeed, arising from disenchantment with conventional industrial food production and supply chains, ‘alternative’ food networks aim to provide a means to reconnect consumers, producers and food (Kneafsey et al. 2008). By taking seriously the act of shopping for food as culturally meaningful and not merely a practice of routinely provisioning the home (Lunt and Livingstone 1992) this thesis then argues that ‘alternative’ food practice provides a platform for the performance of class identities. That is, both structurally and culturally, class is thought to matter to people (Sayer 2011), and is elucidated and reproduced through food practice. By means of mixed methods data collection; participant observation, survey, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis, this study provides support for a Bourdieusian approach to class analysis. In particular, the thesis makes use of Bourdieu’s toolkit of concepts by conceiving of class as a relative ‘position’. This is understood to be achieved via the moral derision of the ‘other’, where participants draw moral boundaries between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods and the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ who partake in its consumption. In this way, the field of ‘alternative’ food practice seems not only ground from which to observe class. Rather, ‘alternative’ food is understood to be appropriated as a resource of ‘distinction’ (Bourdieu 1984) that is then figured in the very maintenance and reproduction of class culture. This interface between class, food and culture may prove consequential for those seeking substantive alternatives to conventional foodways. Crucially, it is argued that by imagining less socially and culturally uniform strategies to promote ‘alternative’ food practice, we may unlock their potential to provide an equitable and sustainable food future. To this end, by elucidating the moral significance of class in the field of ‘alternative’ food practice, this thesis has wider implications in carving a role for sociological enquiry in the emerging field of ‘sustainability science’ (Marsden 2011).

Abstract:
Whether or not there is greater normative tolerance for physical discipline within certain ethno-cultural groups has been hotly debated both within social research and discourse. This descriptive quantitative study examined the characteristics of 72 substantiated physical abuse cases reported to Montreal’s English youth protection over a 2-year period. The findings revealed that 49% of the cases involved visible minority youth. Cross tabulations of 68 variables were compared between two groups: visible minority and Caucasian youth. Factors such as immigration and acculturation stressors and a parent having been subject to physical punishment as a child were more prominent in cases involving visible minority youth while parental mental health problems occurred more frequently in cases involving Caucasian youth. Practice implications regarding the potential benefits of using a varied response model, with an emphasis on culturally competent services, to address the problem of intra-familial violence is also discussed.

Abstract:

The cocoa produced in Fiji is exported to industrialized countries for processing of the raw material. The Swedish organization Cocoa Bello is involved in a project to provide the Fijian cocoa farmers with knowledge as well as resources to enable local processing and to attain added value of the cocoa crop. The purpose of this study is to discover a field of application for the Fijian cocoa among the rural population, using an ethnographic design. We spent one week in Namau Settlement, Fiji, where we applied in-depth interviews and participant obser-vations in six families. We found a number of aspects affecting food choices, such as social, economical and cultural beliefs. The participants were to a great extent self-sufficient in food and because of the farm work they valued food rich in energy, especially the starchy plants grown on the farm. The crops grown on the farm are considered to be the real food. Hence it is important that the Fijian chocolate get the identity of the farm. The cocoa is among other things likely to be used in a beverage. Since the technology is limited, the Fijian cocoa should be underlined as being different from the commercial varieties of cocoa and chocolate, bring-ing out the properties unique to the local chocolate, such as the high content of nutrients and energy.

Ellis, David. "Culture, economy and the normalization of debt." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2014221/.

Full text
Abstract:
The growth of personal indebtedness in the UK has become of increasing significance in the years following the 2007/8 global financial crises as both a public issue and within the personal troubles of individuals. What distinguishes contemporary personal debt is its relationship to the political and economic transformations of the last 30 years, characterised as the process of neoliberalization. This process is allied with a particularly virulent form of global financial capitalism that has increasingly come to dominate all aspects of society, from the institutional structures of civil society to the minutiae of everyday life. In order to draw out the main features of this process and its role in the normalization of debt, this thesis addresses two distinct, but interrelated questions: first, how has personal debt been framed through the promotion and dissemination of particular policy and public discourses?; and second, how have attitudes and behaviours towards personal debt been transformed as everyday cultural practices and understandings? First, the research is guided by the post-disciplinary approach of ‘cultural political economy’, using the concept of the ‘economic imaginary’ to identify the evolving material-discursive production of meaning in government policy-making that has framed personal debt. Second, the research examines how intersubjective meanings of personal debt have become resonant within everyday practices of credit and debt through a series of biographical narrative participant interviews. The two strands of research are brought together within a cultural political economy framework. This thesis demonstrates how established neoliberal embedding at policy-level has unswervingly framed a conception of ‘consumer freedom’ that involves increasing access to credit markets, but emergent extra-discursive situations have always constrained such framings. At the same time, increased access to credit has meant a greater acceptance of debt by people who negotiate these transformations by developing modes of calculation that reduce the moral complications of debt accumulation. However, it also involves being vulnerable to greater risks, as they are exposed to the same extra-discursive constraints.

Zwolinski, Mary. "Displays of Culture: Personal Museums in Wisconsin." TopSCHOLAR®, 1988. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2958.

Full text
Abstract:
Fieldwork was undertaken in the state of Wisconsin to document and interpret privately owned and displayed collections. Collections were comprised of various types of objects, most commonly artworks created and/or collected by the collection owners. These collections often take on an environmental scope, occupying private spheres such as collection owners' homes or outbuildings. An examination of environmental type collections that are housed in bars was also undertaken. Collections of this specific type are culturally and locally significant. The objects in the collections and the collection owners address and provide important information on such local or regional subjects as history, local storytelling practices, and local aesthetics. These collections also serve as natural repositories for the objects of various folkgroups relevant to the region. In this thesis that region is defined as the state of Wisconsin, and those folkgroups examined include occupational, recreational, and ethnic communities. Personal museums are one way that members of these communities preserve, display, interpret, and reaffirm their personal involvements in those groups. Collectors preserve and display tangible evidence of the significance of these communities and their affiliations with those groups. In this thesis I advocate a closer examination of personal museums by teachers, anthropologists, folklorists, and others interested in artifacts of culture.

Garner, Maria. "Conflicts, contradictions and commitments : men speak about sexualisation of culture." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2016. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/1105/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past two decades sexualisation has ascended as a focus for academic, social policy and public debate: central to these debates is concern for children and young people and the significance of sexualised cultural landscapes to feminist politics and women’s social positions. A striking feature of these discussions however, is a lack of empirical, as well as theoretical, considerations of men and masculinities. Men’s accounts, perspectives and experiences of sexualisation have largely been omitted or obscured from contemporary discussions. This thesis widens the parameters of debate to include and to position men as critical agents and stakeholders in the issue. The thesis presents analysis of 154 men’s experiences of, and perspectives on sexualisation, yielded from an online survey and in depth interview process. Of these 154 men, three took part in interviews, eight in both the survey and interviews and 143 the online survey only. The study was guided by two interconnected aims: to explore how men make sense of, and experience sexualisation; and how sexualisation may intersect with ways of being a man. These aims presented two central challenges - researching men, and masculinities and researching sexualisation - both are theoretically, conceptually and practically opaque subjects of study. A woman researching men also presented interesting tangles for research design, specifically for feminist methodologies. As the study advanced the gendered dynamics of the research context emerged as a salient site for exploring forms and flows of (some) men’s oppressive practices, and how men articulate privilege and sustain relations of inequality.

Gaio, A. "Policy formation in the European Community : the case of culture." Thesis, City University London, 2015. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/13689/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the origin and development of EC cultural policy through four case studies of policy formation. The four cases selected occurred in the pre-Maastricht period, 1955-1988. The first two policy experiences correspond to a pre-history of the EC´s cultural policy, the latter two resulted in authoritative policy decisions by EC institutions. The research objectives include historical understanding of this policy experience and an examination of the process of European policy formation. It draws upon archive material from the Historical Archives of the European Union. This material is organised and analytically narrated around the events that make up each episode. The approach is theoretically oriented case research – each experience studied corresponds to a policy episode. These policy episodes are analysed through a combined theoretical framework based on Kingdon´s multiple streams model (1995), which explains the pre-decisional and decision-making stages of the policy-making process, and on institutional processualism which seeks to attain a causal understanding of these processes that is sensitive to institutional context. This thesis represents one of the first applications of this model in the field of cultural policy. The comparative approach deployed identifies similarities and differences among the four episodes studied and compares the dynamics of the policy process between them with a view to generating theoretical generalisations about the formation of cultural policy in the EC in the period of interest. The application of Kingdon’s model to European public-policy to an extent tested the model, though ultimately it demonstrates its flexibility and relevance to a variety of agenda situations and analysis. The model was less successful in explaining policy formulation, in this instance, which is explained by the pervading institutional reach of the EC Treaties. A specific interest of Kingdon´s is policy entrepreneurship and how it affects the policy process and this is also a main interest of this research. The model worked well here but proved limited in that it generated only a partial explanation for the agency of cultural policy entrepreneurs whose motivations, we found, are intrinsic and specific to cultural policy.

Bennett, Paul Anthony. "Identity performance and gendered culture : becoming and being a Neighbourhood Officer." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/26175/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years the police service has undergone a number of changes with the introduction of neighbourhood policing (NP) being one of the most significant. NP represents the latest in a long line of government endorsed attempts to introduce a more community orientated and customer focussed approach to policing. NP encourages police constables (PCs) and, the recently introduced, police community support officers (PCSOs) to spend more time engaging with the public, supporting vulnerable members of community and working in partnership with other agencies. This style of policing represents a significant departure from established understandings of policing which have become synonymous with ‗response policing‘ with its focus on maintaining public order and arresting criminals. A great deal of research over the last 30 years has referred to the highly gendered culture of policing which has also been the subject of a great deal of criticism. This research focuses on the identity performances of NP officers and the different ways that NP is enacted within different contexts and situated interactions. My conceptual framework draws on both ethnomethodological and poststructural approaches in understanding how officers in different contexts constructed, reconstructed and resisted discourses in the performances of particular identities. This framework is therefore sensitive to how power and resistance works through discursive constructions within particular contexts. To further improve our appreciation of context, emphasis is given to the importance of cultural meanings as an important source of discursive constraint. However, the research clearly shows that while some discourses may be dominant in influencing identity performances, these are always contested and it is though the clash of competing discourses that the agency of NP officers is revealed (Holmer-Nadesan 1996). The study adopts an ethnographic methodology, using participant observation and semi-structured interviews to examine four broad NP contexts. These are the PCSO training course and the three neighbourhood teams, all of which are located in a different policing environment. Drawing on ethnomethodology, my approach focused on the front and back stage contexts of neighbourhood policing, examining the relationships between discourses and performances within these contexts. The findings reveal the strength of dominant policing discourses linked to gender, police professionalism, ‗real‘ policing and community and also shows the ways that these discourses are also infused and subverted by different sets of meanings and ways of being. The PCs and PCSOs involved in the study were seen to manoeuvre and navigate these contested discourses in the ways they enacted NP in different contexts. The research also reveals the contested and fragmented nature of policing cultures and how these cultures may be best understood as a coexistence of multiple constructions of discourse (Mumby, 2011). The concluding discussion of the thesis presents a number of contributions in relation to the discursive construction of identities, the influence of gendered cultures as well as the challenge of introducing NP into British policing.

Issa, Hesham K. "New insights into Bedouin culture : a study of three Bedouin descent groups in Northeast Egypt." Thesis, University of Hull, 2005. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5618.

Full text
Abstract:
The ethnographic study on which this thesis is based was carried on from September 2002 through August 2003 among three Bedouin descent groups in northeast Egypt and Sinai. Through a cognitive anthropological approach, reflexivity and hermeneutics, and the adoption of participant observation techniques, this thesis is a study of the culture of the Egyptian Bedouin. It aims at providing a better understanding and appreciation of the Bedouin and their culture. It confronts many negative stereotypes and misrepresentations about Bedouin culture and lifestyle. Also concerned with a critical epistemology, this thesis could be considered a statement advocating the cultural rights of the Bedouin. In general, this thesis celebrates the Bedouin organisation and utilisation of their distinctive culture. In the process of the study, various Bedouin cultural models and schemas are examined and analysed. Examples and comparisons with other cultures are provided wherever possible. The Bedouin construct their own cultural models as a means of negotiating their natural and socio-political environments. They make continuous adjustments in response to the demands of the surrounding natural environment and the socio-political conditions. The Bedouin show a remarkable ability to change and adapt. They can invoke multiple identities and change their model of behaviour according to various contexts. Adaptability becomes very important in the economic sphere. Despite many similarities between different Bedouin groups, each Bedouin group has its own 'local' or 'specific' cultural models, which make Bedouin culture highly diversified. The study reveals that the stereotypical images of Bedouin as drug smugglers and being 'ignorant' about matters of religion are erroneous. The Aiaida Sufi Bedouin, in particular, demonstrate moral values and Islamic beliefs based on piety and love. Their teachings and wisdom propagate understanding, respect and tolerance of 'others'; such values are highly required for bringing different cultures together. The findings of this study are related to many issues currently discussed worldwide such as modernity and change, Islam and the West, human rights and gender relations. They aim at enriching the ongoing debates on these issues by presenting them from a Bedouin perspective.

Pagano, Jennifer Hoolhorst. "The evolution of Sunset Magazine's cooking department: The accommodation of men's and women's cooking in the 1930s." Scholarly Commons, 2019. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/3575.

Full text
Abstract:
The Western regional magazine Sunset has been published under a series of owners and publishers since 1898. In 1928, Sunset was purchased by Lawrence Lane, a Midwestern magazine executive who transformed it from a failing turn-of-the-century, general interest publication about the West, into a successful magazine about living in the West for the Western middle-class. Sunset had always been a magazine for men and women, and one that appealed to both male and female intellectuals at the time Lane purchased it. Lane and his editors attempted to interject more rigid middle-class ideals into a magazine that had espoused ideas that were progressive and less structured. Lane's new strategy to compartmentalize Sunset's content into its four categories—gardening, the home, cooking, and travel—resulted in a magazine that was conventionally gendered. Tension due to this shift played out in the publication's new cooking department. This thesis traces the development of Sunset's cooking department between 1928 and 1938 under the direction of its creator and founding editor Genevieve Callahan through the examination and analysis of Sunset cooking features and oral histories. The original department, structured to model a middle-class domestic ideology, did not accommodate all of Sunset's readers. The Western intellectualism of pre-Lane readers and their tendency to be less bound by conventional gender roles in the kitchen carried over into Sunset's cooking department via reader recipe contributions. These Western cooks included men and women whose foodways deviated from that of the typical middle-class housewife. Callahan experimented throughout the cooking department's first decade by shifting its editorial framework and softening her home economics rigidity to create a department that was inclusive of women and men who cooked both inside and outside the kitchen. The changes made to the department over that decade illustrate how editorial experimentation reconciled a new middle-class-oriented cooking department to accommodate Western cooks less apt to model traditional gender roles.

Henley, Jacob M. "Risk Culture as a Method of Risk Mitigation for the Whitewater Industry." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/47.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is a literature review and case study exploration of risk management at the organizational level in the outdoor whitewater recreation industry. The goal of the study is to identify any weaknesses or vulnerabilities in the culture of contemporary risk management, and to make recommendations to address these weaknesses. The case involves a situation in which I was personally involved, with an outcome that was tragic. In the light of what I have learned from this project I believe that a stronger risk culture would have resulted in a very different outcome. The distinction between risk culture and safety protocols will be addressed extensively in a discussion of risk clockspeed. One conclusion of this study is that effective risk management depends upon creating a risk culture that relies upon situation analysis in addition to developing stringent sets of safety protocols. The situation described in this paper involves a scenario where neither a risk culture nor adequate safety protocols existed, even though resources to solve problems were readily available. The case involves two operations of the same company, a whitewater operation and a zipline operation. The literature provides conceptual tools and a larger context. I provide relevant information based on my direct involvement in the situation. The analysis and discussion focuses on an accident involving the shared resources of both operations. I will conclude by addressing how creating a risk culture and safety protocols can lead to a greater awareness that will help to prevent similar situations, and avoid similar outcomes, in the future.
